- Are skinsuits making a comeback in downhill mountain biking?
Skinsuits were all the rage back in the early days of downhill racing, before falling out of favour, with only fleeting appearances in the mid-2000s before they were banned.
They were back on everyone’s radar at last weekend’s opening round of the 2024 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William, Scotland.
Is Fox’s new Speedsuit RS, a clever, body-hugging two-piece outfit designed specifically for downhill racing by circumventing the current rules, a step too far?
We also caught some of the latest tech in the pits and got the lowdown on bikes from Atherton Racing, Intense, Mondraker and the all-new YT Tues piloted by Oisin O'Callaghan.
What do you think of the new Fox Speedsuit? Let us know in the comments!

Is the Speed Suit 👍 or 👎 🤔
I'm all for it. European Cup DH/XCC/XCO is the pinnacle of the sport and is where everything needs to be pushed just like in F1.
(please excuse the stupid question from a roadie) I thought there was some sort of rule in DH that stopped people wearing skin suits? I thought the clothing had to be "baggy" to maintain the "look of the sport". Obviously making the clothing as tight fitting as possible is an easy win for speed. But then there's loads of low hanging aero gains in DH
There is not much difference between Oisin and Laurie's outfits. They all seem to be getting as tight as possible now. Just a different design. There used to be a rule against lycra, but I think the only difference now is it can't be a onepiece. Regardless the average rider doesn't want or need to be clad in lycra.
@@TheGinger1 Great question and something we covered in our article on bikeradar.com - www.bikeradar.com/features/opinion/fox-speedsuit-aero-era
Thanks for watching!
I think a suit looks good if you have a body like Lori for us regulars it might look bulky
Well covered by Nigel Thornberry. I reckon the Orbea is a gearbox bike and the derailleur is just a dummy setup.
Thanks for commenting! Eliza is well and Donnie is up to his usual tricks. I love the idea that Orbea has turned the Wild into a gearbox bike. Hopefully we find out one day!

Bernard Kerr called it when he saw Christian Craig wear a similar one in supercross earlier this year. #BernardKerr
Ahem.... are we not going to point at all the electronic suspension systems on the podiums at Ft Bill? ;) Very dominate in XCO last season, and then 4/5 on the mens elite at the first DH? Gonna be interesting to see how many wins are taken on the one setting suspension bits.
There was so much to cover and we would love to see more of the electronic suspension systems on the DH bikes in future! Thanks for commenting!

8:39 you just see him thinking ‘kids these days’.. Thank god for 1x drivetrains though.
Oisin: stunning bike!!
Thanks for commenting, it really is a looker!

Horrible skin suits, this is not road racing, give us more technical trails that are slower and require better speed transmision. We already have less then a second between riders and skin suits are not the way🤮 Love the ochain and would recommend it to anyone that rides technical stuff.
if everyone is wearing one then its an even playing field. what next, should we ban riders for tucking in their shirts because it makes them faster?
@@dyslexiusmaximus Also I think beyond the aero side of it, they do feel better/nicer to ride in especially with the body armour being integrated alongside. But yeah, from a spectator point of view, it is hard to tell them apart from what a lot were doing anyway, like you say, tight pants and tucking jersey in.
@@teamdoa yeah. maybe I'm out of touch but i feel like people are over reacting.
