  • If you follow downhill racing, you already know Neko Mulally has been building and racing his own bike frames under the banner of "Frameworks", but for most of us, this would be unthinkable. For a downhill racer at Neko's level, a bike sponsor is a huge part of your income, your entry fees, and a whole lot more. By giving that up to build his own Frames, all of that is on Neko's plate. Today we're going to find out what would possess this man to do that.

    The amount Neko has learned developing these frames is unreal. A fascinating glimpse into what drives a world cup DH racer from a product perspective

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 9 месяцев назад +5

      Yup, like learning it's better to have carbon for weight savings so he's starting with the rear triangle. But he knows carbon is better for the rest of the bike too. The money just isn't there for a mold yet. Funny thing is that he says he put his favorite things into this bike which is how a lot of downhill bikes are built. They're simply built to the favorite characteristics of a brand's top downhill racers

    • @joebruggman
      @joebruggman 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@veganpotterthevegan main reasoning is because you want as little unsprung weight as possible for optimal ride characteristics

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 9 месяцев назад +3

      @joebruggman great reason for a full carbon bike. This is a fun project that's obviously an investment into creating a real bike company. Understable that carbon isn't the first material he's using

    • @joebruggman
      @joebruggman 9 месяцев назад +4

      @@veganpotterthevegan yes but the frame is sprung weight so it’s material is not going to affect the ride quality of the bike as much as making the rear triangle carbon, but yes carbon would be the “best”.

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 9 месяцев назад +3

      @joebruggman there is a lot more weight savings to be had in the frame than the rear triangle and much of it is higher up which definitely matters.

      Definitely necessary when nobody knew what worked. This bike really doesn't have anything vastly different than other bikes on the market beyond it being made for one person. This reminds me of the early days of Transition Bikes. I bought the Bottlerocket largely because of the geometry. But it was also built of straight tubing. Nothing was hydroformed or shaped just for the sake of looking a certain way. It was built to function. And it came in raw aluminum with ZERO badges or stickers. I put the included transition logo on the bottom of the down tube because I thought it looked good down there. Consequently, most folks didn't ever see it. It looked completely home built and almost everyone that looked at the bike asked who made it. Loved that bike, primarily because of how it rode. But it was also a lot of fun talking to riders at the mountain about it. Good times!

    That would seem bizarre, unless you've ever been in the race car world. Road course, drag racing, hill climb, a lot of those cars are hand built one off vehicles built by the people who race them in a garage in nowhere special-ville. That's the spirit, and he has it!

    WOW - much respect to this man, giving it up to do his own design. And who better to design & build them than a pro racer like himself?! This man will go very far in his ventures...

    Rode the Azonic Recoil for years. Not sure if it was any good but I sure liked it. Seemed forgiving when I made mistakes. It was also cool that usually it was the only one on the mtn that day. It was always cool to spot the obscure frames anywhere I rode.

    Love this type of content Seth! Another bike brand you could do would be TRINITY MTB in Australia!

    Those bikes look great. Neko certainly looks like he knows his stuff. It's great seeing the development of his frames and how he improves their designs.
    Big costs for him though, I hope he has a bright future ahead, he certainly seems to be on the right track.

    Seeing Seth stand next to Neko's bike is like watching a child get ready to learn to ride his dad's bike 🤣

    I've been following Neko for years since he's somewhat local to me. While he lives in NC now, he's from eastern PA and raced at all of the venues I raced at ages ago. I don't really need a DH bike, but if/when the FW DH frame starts production, I plan on getting one.

    Ah yes, the aluminum framed bikes. The most common type of material used in creating a simple yet agile bike. I love it. And neko's bikes are built different, LITERALY, making it "Different, But Kinda the Same" I suggest a carbon-steel combination of the bike as it could be a bit lighter as the rear triangle is carbon and the front triangle is steel. Huge support to frame works and more power to you, seth.

    My son and I have met Neko a couple of times. Amazingly down to earth guy that loves to talk about mountain bikes. If I have the money when he offers his bikes for sale, I'll buy one.

    Neko is one of the coolest guys I have ever met. I need to be on the lookout for when the limited run of frames for the trail bike become available.

    Neko is a wnc legend. When I was new to biking in high school I saw him out on the trail once and I’ve never been more excited
