      The problem with that is that is if it's only a 10% reduction in price it's still a $35K car. Getting a US sourced battery alone will make it close to a $30K car.
      Logically implementing cheeper components/modules (motor, suspension, control modules) from the upcoming un-boxed platform and combining it with US sourced batteries into the existing model 3/Y platform, should be able to get below $30K. Adding a new smaller model will not reduce the price, until they move to the un-boxed platform.

    Thank you Herbert, Brian, great discussion. Is a reasonably accurate summary of your discussion: (from Lars) learnings & improvements to be added to all existing models across the range + any new models; which means not building un-boxed model 2 yet, but will build a model 2.5 now using body-in-white approach (on same lines) ? I'd buy a small model 2 with steer-by-wire + structural battery pack + cybertruck no rare earth induction motor as soon as it is offered ... Not waiting patiently Tesla ... :)

    Tesla needs a compact car especially for EU/Asia market, M3/MY are considered huge for these markets. Also a compact car with FSD would be an incredible product. Compact car also needs steer by wire, 48v and 800v architecture to reduce costs and weight. Also a VAN is a must ! Why they did not release it yet?!

  • @konradallan

    A crossover would make a lot of sense, small SUVs sell like crazy these days. Something in the segment of the Rivian R2/R3, In other words a smaller Model Y. Additionally, a smaller Model 3 maybe the size of the Honda City (or a hatchback).

    Sandy Munro has said that the stainless steel would cost too much and that there are other materials that could do the job that are cheaper and just as strong. I just watched a guy who was making formed foam cabinets for his van. He had said that it was durable but weigh next to nothing. Maybe they could use that for the inside. And Tesla needs to make the floor of the model 2 to be like a truck floor where you can hose it down. I have always hated the carpet thing where it gets all stained.

    1) model Y refresh must be done ( refresh of int & ext, 48v, steer by wire), Elon mentioned pull-in of car into 1H25, this will be Model 2 ( smaller,lower cost than M3,MY, probably with hatchback. This car will ease transition to unboxed factory in Mexico since it will be an existing production vehicle when it gets built on new process

    Current Tesla models are all based on the sedans and SUVs that are popular in the US. Hover, hatchbacks are the most popular form in Europe, and other forms are more popular in Asia. I believe the "new models" referred to in the quarterly report refer to hatchback and other versions of Model 3 and Y that are tailored to regional style preferences.

    I don't think just repacking the Model Y or Model 3 will suffice. Small car buyers expect something new and fresh from Tesla, not diluted versions of existing vehicles designs that are years old. Yes, I believe they should target the hatchback and small sedan category which are in the largest base for affordability. The new vehicles can't appear "cheap", look how Chinese manufacturers are offering feature rich low-cost cars now. ICE cars in these segments will also be our competition, and many of these vehicles are well appointed too. Yes, as an EV the Model 2, 2.5, etc.., will have obvious advantages, as a Tesla even more so, but It's paramount they appeal to a wide base of customers, therefore, I would not use the Cybertruck design language; it's too polarizing. Not saying they should play it safe either, but perhaps something not so "balls to the walls". 🙂

    I need to be able get furniture and kitchen utility white goods in my car occasionally. The Model 3 is useless in this regard. Further, like the Model Y, it is vastly bigger than I need or want for day to day city driving and parking.
    I need a eurobox type car. 4 comfortable seats, 5 at a push. A decent daily luggage storage but a wide open cavern with the seats down, once or twice a month.
    220+ miles range with 100kWh charge speed easily beats my families bladders.
    A low insurance group would be excellent too.

    What are the new models? We. don't. know. But we WILL know. Eventually, there will be photos of these vehicles during testing. Could it be a simple 2dr version of either 3 or Y? Possibly, but 2 doors are not big sellers. I suspect they'll be a different shell (body).... and who knows what other aspects that could save a lot of cost. Patience. We'll see. We'll be excited. lol

    Geez I’ve been posting a few times take the model 3 put 50kw battery, single motor, cloth seats, no rear screen, steel wheels and what ever else they can throw at it they can get under $30k add $7500 IRA and we are under $25k

  • @lou7139
    @lou7139 17 дней назад

    I think Tesla will make economical model 3 and model Y versions that will have: Cloth seats, steel wheels with aero hubcaps, single motor, 200-250 mile range battery, and other smaller cost-saving feature omissions to bring it to around $20k-$25k (before tax credits). They will still be very performant and nice looking cars. They will all have FSD capability, of course, so people will probably buy them with use as robotaxis. I think Tesla will simply not be able to make enough of them to satisfy demand for a long time.

    So Model 2 will be published in the end of this year and sold in H1 2025, when one core part of it (HW version 5) only now "design ready" (according to Musk)? And what some sort of HW3..HW5 frankenplatform (also according to Musk) will make for the profitability of the whole project?

  • @wr2382
    @wr2382 18 дней назад

    They are unlikely to produce a new version of the Model 3 as it almost certainly has a higher production cost and, therefore, lower margin than the Model Y. We know this is true for the US because Tesla is putting their US-made Panasonic batteries in the Model Y variants and Model 3 Performance so that hose variants receive the tax rebate. The reason why Tesla wants those variants to receive the tax rebate is because they want to maximise sales of the cars that have the highest margins. That means the Model Y variants have higher margins than the Model 3 variants, and that the Performance Model 3 has a higher margin than the LR and RWD model 3 variants.
    Also, I would be surprised if the new car is not smaller than the current models. Batteries still make up a large percentage of an EV's manufacturing cost, so it is going to be very difficult to make a low-price EV with a battery capacity of more than 50 kWh. Add that to what Musk said a few years ago about a car needing at least 250-miles of range and I think Tesla will be aiming to produce a car that can achieve an EPA range of 250-miles with a 50-kWh (or smaller) battery. That means that the car will need to be both aerodynamic and light. That implies that the new car will be significantly smaller than the Model Y.
    So, I think we will see a smaller car than the existing models, but one that is built on the original Austin Model Y template - front and rear castings, structural battery pack with attached seats and that forms the floor of the car, conventional frame and painted panels - but with the new motors, a 48-volt architecture, and other next gen features, and a simpler interior and sound system. This car could be built using the existing Model Y line production line equipment at Austin but with some small adjustments made to the distance between robots, etc. to adjust to the vehicle's smaller dimensions. A similar line could undoubtedly be installed at Giga Berlin and, maybe, at Giga Shanghai if Model Y production at Model Y falls to a level where an existing line becomes available.
    Wrt Model Y production at Giga Shanghai, there was a report in mid-March stating that manufacturing at Shanghai had been reduced from 6.5 to 5 days a week. I have read that there are 4 Model Y lines at Shanghai. If that is true, 5-days times 4-lines gives 20 line-days of current Model Y production. If one of those 4 lines was switched over to producing the new vehicle, the remaining 3 lines could go back to 6.5 days of production and still produce 3-lines times 6.5-days = 19.5 line-days of production, which is very close to the current 20 line-days of Model Y production.

    Here's a sales incentive that may be more or less a fancy dream.
    Ok bare with me here,
    Free Tesla FSD vehicles. Not really free but since these will be FSD have owners receiving the "Free FSD Tesla" sign a use contract where as the vehicle is 100% Free after 2 to 4 years of contracted cybercab use. So when the owner isn't using the vehicle it will automatically switch to cab mode until called. Cybercab earns the value of the car back from having the private owner cars, and reduces fleet depreciation.
    Not only would this sell vehicles it'll boost the economy, help low income earned receive a better income, but also promote the Tesla services and brand....
    "Hey Elon if you like the idea sign me up first one" beggars can't be choosers but the cyber truck is sweet!
