Larry Goldberg is absolutely right once again! Tesla will need many of what I call “Robotaxi Supercharging Hubs”. These will be dozens of large charging, cleaning, parking hubs strategically located throughout each metropolitan area and most likely run by the rental car companies who will serve as Tesla’s Robotaxi Fleet Operators. A metropolitan area such as San Francisco with a population of 4 million people may eventually need from 500k to 750k or more Robotaxis. Most of these vehicles will need to be charged, cleaned and parked overnight relatively close to the highest demand areas throughout the metropolitan area.

I'm not convinced that Tesla will be prepared to pay for operations in parking lots in the city centre. It's all about the economics of that Vs the Robotaxi driving a little further out of town where land is cheaper. I think AI will decide when and where to charge e.g. charge is getting low then get that Robotaxi to take a fare out towards the service centre.

@@darylfoster7944 Roger re the overnight empty concrete jungles…..but I have a different view on the future of driving especially here in the UK as we have a huge population well into retirement, pensioners are not looking to do nought to sixty in one second we just want to get from A to B without being wiped out on the road.
If a cheap alternative arrives on the scene it will be the tipping point for lots of folk
On retirement we owned three cars, we now have one, if we could call up a non-driver car 24/7 then we would consider selling our Model YLR within the next five or so years.
If we are thinking along these lines then so are thousands of other 60+ drivers, cost of owning a car, cost or insurance for older drivers (apparently we have money) cost of fuel, cleaning it, the list of savings is endless.
If we won the Lotto we would have a chauffeur so this automated service is going to offer the same advantages but without the investment!.
I feel the car owning population would probably drop to a quarter of its current level naturally over time, no need to take a driving test, car drops Mum Dad to their works offices , kids to school whilst another one picks up Grandma to do the shopping.
At night call up a cab to go our for a meal / pub cinema, dropped off and picked up as a door to door service, no parking, no fuel, no coming back to find your car is missing a door mirror !

What do you think of the idea that Tesla will create a new and different supercharging network that is only applicable to "Robotaxi Chargers"? This may create more of a moat than just utilizing existing supercharger network.. Yes this may be a duplication of services and on the surface looks as if it is adding complexity but may also make this less easily duplicated by upstarts piggybacking teslas infrastructure. One angle could be that it will be with the type of charging that does not require a person to plug in. Instead it will employ the slightly less efficient "mats" that are done via wifi or some other non physical charging approach.. Please comment Larry and Herbert.

Traditional ride sharing including taxi’s are cooked. And eventually FSD will extend to air taxis, shipping and logistics.
Uber, Lyft, Hertz, etc. will partner and their value add will quickly be eased. They will be essentially franchise operators. Tesla won’t make the same mistake that they made with their charging network as they will extract an appropriate value for all of their work.

In my opinion, the only way it is going to work is to lease out geographic area to businessmen with a minimum requirements of general performance. Tesla I don't think should be embroiled in details, let other capable people do the whole, Tesla should only create a blue print and then lease out the hardware and software required. Naturally the business prospects would need and independent financial source that would give tesla the monetary guarantees needed to initiate operations.

Ultimately Tesla Robotaxis will be charged wirelessly and be cleaned and maintained by Optimus robots (Optimi?). For Optimi to be used internally in late 2024 and for sale in 2025, the south extension of the main factory, Boring Company tunnel, and new building to be constructed over the west end of the tunnel are for Optimus production, inventory, and shipping. We will know for sure if the tunnel comes up inside the south extension and a building's foundation starts being constructed over the west end right after (or while) the Prufrock 3 operation support infrastructure is removed.

Larry's arguments for Tesla to make use of Uber's existing market could have equally been applied to Tesla in its early years teaming up with a market leader with an already established market like GM or Ford. Wouldn't have worked. Mercedes and Toyota both established a relationship with Tesla in the early days. The hurdle for Tesla to enter the ride hailing market is many time lower than competing with the
"big" boys in the automobile industry or NASA and Russia in the Space industry !!!!!! Uber needs Tesla, Tesla does not need Uber.

There are around 80 million new cars sold each year, Elon has stated that he aims for Tesla to sell 20 million vehicles in 2030.
Tesla will unveil the dedicated autonomous electric Robo taxi on the 8th of August this year.
He would not be unveiling it unless he was certain that the Tesla engineers will solve automonomy ( full self driving ) soon, because without automonomy there is no autonomous Robo taxis.
Autonomous Robo taxis do not need a driver and therefore have a utilisation rate at least 5 times higher than a privately owned human driven vehicle.
That basically means that for every 1 robo taxis Tesla deploys on the road there will be 5 less privately owned human driven vehicles sold.
If Tesla produce 20 million vehicles in 2030, I believe the vast majority will be dedicated autonomous electric robo taxis.
Let's assume that if Tesla meet their goal and sell 20 million vehicles in 2030,I believe that 16 million will be robo taxis and the remaining 4 million will be a mixture of Cybertrucks, Model 3s and Ys, a van and the Tesla Semi and perhaps the Next Gen Roadstar.
Remember that I said that for every Robotaxi sold takes 5 privately owned human driven vehicles of the road.
16 million robo taxis X 5 equals 80 million vehicles not sold plus the 4 million other Tesla vehicles.
That's the equivalent of Tesla displacing 84 million vehicles in 1 year, remembering that there are only 80 million new vehicles sold each year.
So theoretically speaking Tesla could by 2030 capture all new vehicles sales if they reach there aim of 20 million vehicles if 16 million are Robotaxi and the other 4 million are Tesla's.
Not to mention all the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers such as Nio, Xpeng, Xaioma, Zeekr, Lu, Avitr that are manufactoring millions of superior quality electric vehicles now and will be selling them worldwide.
The internal combustion engine vehicle manufacturers are all going bankrupt, that old, prehistoric, ancient, polluting fuel burning, inefficient technology that can not be improved on.
A major collapse of internal combustion engine vehicle sales is imminent, it has happened in Norway already and is happening in China and Sweden right now,it will happen in Australia and many European and Asia countries next year and will only accelerate over the next few years.

What Uber has to offer is not a moat that Tesla can't easily duplicate. Tesla robotaxi's really need fleet services, repairs, parking, cleaning, and maintenance. The rental car companies are already staffed, and set up to do this. A rental car company buyout or partnership makes more sense than Uber.

I disagree with Larry. If Tesla launches Robotaxi in China, if anything, it shows yet again that China cant develop any new tech on their own and they need Tesla or foreign companies to do it for them. We already know that China and similar markets are much faster to remove regulations but that is the easy part and there are both pros and cons of that. Everyone knows Tesla is a US tech company so the fact that they roll out their Robo Taxi in China will only show the world that US is the leader once again, albeit slow in adjusting their regulatory landscape. FYI: I am not an American so I am not here to bash China. I am simply stating unbiased facts.
