  • One person has died, with several injured, after severe turbulence on a London to Singapore flight.
Authorities at Bangkok airport said the victim was a 73-year-old British man who "likely" died from a heart attack.
Seven people are seriously injured - the wife of the British man who died has gone to hospital.
Anyone not wearing a seat belt was “launched into the ceiling”, one passenger said.
Singapore Airlines said the flight experienced "sudden extreme turbulence" over Myanmar.

As someone who often flies to Singapore from London via sg airlines, turbulence is something I encounter every single time. It's terrifying to hear this news of someone dying, but it's a relief that at the very least the plane did not crash and landed safely.

    • @mikeday2848

Absolutely ! I endorse your comment about turbulence : I commuted between N.Africa, (Tunis ,Tripoli ) to S'pore & Bangkok via Frankfurt for 32 years : I racked up well over a million air miles with LH & SIA and cannot recall a flight that was totally turbulence free : My worst experience was when audaciously trigger-happy belligerent American fighter planes flew so close as to trigger the collision mechanisms on the night that the USA invaded Afghanistan, causing our LH 747 400 to go into a vertical dive , not once but twice ...and not a word from the cockpit until we landed in Frankfurt: I think the pilots must have almost had heart failure too ...they had not been forewarned that hostilities had been launched .

The most dangerous thing about turbulence is not that that the plane crashes. It's the injuries due to hitting the wall with your head or receiving a sharp object right in your face. Turbulence by itself does not make planes crash.

I’d say, don’t blame the passengers for following the airline’s instructions. Aren’t we meant to accept that they had zero warning? That the passengers had not been told to buckle up at all? Something is wrong with this whole story.
Pilots usually know when turbulence is coming and warn the passengers in advance. I’ve experienced that myself. So, what happened to the warning systems? Or did the pilot fail to notice, or react properly to alarms? This, “could,” have been a freak weather event. But it seems vanishingly unlikely that it could not have been foreseen, given its sheer scale.

I don't understand the people who get up and go and stand next to friends/family and chat for minutes and minutes out of their seat. If there is a sudden and unexpected drop in altitude as a result of turbulence, they will get thrown up, bounce off the ceiling of the plane and land down hitting their head or body with full force on the armrest or back of some seats or even the passengers in those seats. It's not like a fun rollercoaster ride, it's like a traffic accident. My condolences to the family of the man who died in this case.

The 6,000ft drop was actually a controlled descent (to safer atmospheric conditions, I understand) and not what caused the injuries.
The damaging 'instantaneous' turbulence was, according to official data reported elsewhere, a rapid 'altitude deviation' of -100ft then +300ft. In other words, an instantaneous 100ft drop, causing the impacts against the ceiling, followed instantly by a sudden rise of 300ft.
Huge forces when taking into account it was a 777.

It never ceases to amaze me how people stroll about the cabin yacking with others as if they were in a bar BUT they are not. They are 35,000 feet up in the air where anything can happen but usually doesn't thank god. I have even seen passengers get up after a turbulence warning from the captain and be told to sit back down an put their seat belts on by the flight attendants. On my last flight flight attendants had to tell one man repeatedly to sit down and belt up while another woman was told twice to put her laptop away while landing. There are always idiots a foot but it makes it hard to ignore them when they are in the same winged tube you are.

I flew years ago with Etihad airlines, this was a bigger plane than the Singapore airlines, we had a really bad turbulence experience that time. Probably almost an hour, the plane was shaking really bad, they were serving the meal that time, they have to stopped it.I kept on praying that time because it was really bad. Every one was in silence, nobody was moving. It was so terrifying.

A real problem for the airlines and air travel is there is nothing to be done about this. It's not like all the issues Boeing has had where they can (hopefully) correct the problems. This is the way it is up there at 35,000 ft. Clear air turbulence is invisible to the pilots or their instruments.

ALWAYS KEEP BELT FASTENED, unless walking to toilet. Like the crew always say on all the many overseas flights I have flown in many years. Most people take no notice but I ALWAYS fasten mine . Trouble is, in sudden turbulence all the people who ignore that crew instruction, all those other people who go flying through the cabin are going to land on other people!!! And injure us too! They put everyone else at risk!

I'm optimistic they'll improve on detection in the future as this will only be an increasing phenomenon. Clear air turbulence has been getting stronger and more frequent and has been linked to climate change.
I hope that we find appropriate solutions for this.
Also, maybe we can just be more aware of the regions where they are very common. Thailand is quite intense to fly over on a good day.

Unfortunately, most turbulence cannot be "seen". There are indicators that my assist in predicting it but the best defence is for all passengers to use their seatbelts when seated during a flight. That does not prevent unrestrained items from "banging" around in the cabin, but it does lessen possible injuries to seated passengers. Grüße aus Australien.
