"west elm caleb" proves tik tok users are actually insane
Hey guys!! welcome back to my second channel :)) today i thought we could talk about a situation that happened a few weeks ago on tik tok concerning a guy dubbed "west elm caleb." If you've been on the internet in the past month you've probably seen at least one person referring to the situation but if you don't know the whole story, it all started when a few girls living in new york happened to post tik toks about their experience with a guy they had all met on Hinge named Caleb who worked at West Elm. People started connecting the similarities in their stories and once the girls realized they were all talking about the same guy the flood gates opened and tons of people came forward with their own stories of West Elm Caleb and how they had been ghosted by him too. The hashtag #westelmcaleb started trending on the app and the flood gates opened content wise with tons of people joining in on memes about the situation as well, as of right now the hashtag has over 60 million views.
Since this is tik tok though of course some people took it too far and started doxing Caleb by posting his full dating profile, full name, Linkedin profile and even started contacting West Elm to get him fired from his job over the situation... just basically trying to ruin this guys life. It got so bad that some of the original girls that had viral videos on Caleb and their experience with him had to come out and tell people to calm down because it had reached such an insane point. I thought it'd be an interesting topic for a stream because while West Elm Caleb might be one of the more severe examples of this kind of reaction to drama concerning regular people on tik tok (sort of like the couch guy tik tok situation), I don't think it'll be the last and who knows how much more out of hand it could get in the future. Sooo we'll be looking through the whole situation in today's video and talking about the implications of it all, I'd love to hear what you guys think about it in the comments below if you wanna share but otherwise I hope you enjoy the video!! :)

I DETEST the way that terms like "lovebombing" and "gaslighting" get thrown around on the Internet--especially Twitter and TikTok. It trivializes actual instances of these things, and then turns actions that aren't a huge deal (such as the actions of West Elm Caleb) into examples of "abusive behaviour".
And THEN, because of the target's "abusive behaviour", everyone essentially gets a free pass to engage in actually toxic behaviour, like doxxing, sending threats, etc. There are plenty of awful people online, but sometimes the truly heinous ones hide behind an aesthetic of righteousness while attacking others.

No. I ran away from home after my ribs got broken in back in 2017, my dad was then diagnosed professionally, the whole deal, I don’t use the vocabulary facetiously. I get that stuff has become twisted because of misinformation, but yes real victims are being believed less and less & we were already suffering pre tiktok in that sense. Very tiring stuff indeed

That's textbook narcissistic behavior- love bomb until you get emotionally hooked and invested, then devalue to lower self-esteem, and eventually discard, or if you discard them before they're able to, then they set up a smear campaign to damage your reputation, then in some cases, there's hoovering to keep you stuck as their source of supply. Best way to handle it is to go no contact. I hope you got out of that situation, relationships like that can be tough to leave. Narcissism is a spectrum and all people have some narcissistic tendencies, especially if they have issues with self esteem and self love. However, the behaviors I described in my comment are *strongly* correlated with NPD, specifically people that are *deep* narcissists, as Robert Greene describes in his book Laws of Human Nature. I say all this from personal experience, having family members who had/have strong narcissistic tendencies and 5+ years of research and a senior thesis on human behavior, identity and empathy.

First of all, I'm sick of ghosting being treated with such fervor. Like it should only be considered "ghosting" if you have been on multiple dates. Not replying to you on a dating app or not seeing you again after the first date is not ghosting. We're practically strangers at that point. I don't tell the lady I had a nice conversation with in the checkout line that I'm not interested in pursuing the relationship further.
Secondly, this is not love-bombing. You had a nice conversation and a got a cool playlist out of it and that was the end of it. You weren't manipulated into an abusive situation because this man didn't text you back.

    • @friday13thirteen
      @friday13thirteen 2 года назад +145

yeah i feel like ghosting was originally coined to refer to "my boyfriend of 2 years cut off all contact with me and i had to call his parents to make sure he wasn't dead" type scenarios, and now it's been so diluted that people use it for every instance where they don't get a text back. it's not ghosting if a guy you haven't even met yet sends you a playlist and then decides he's not feeling it anymore.

The thing that irks me the most about this Caleb situation is that the women calling him out are completely ignorant of their own hypocrisy. I can guarantee they're all also speaking to multiple men at the same time. They've probably all ghosted a guy for someone else hotter or more interesting. One of the girls explicitly says she was going to add Caleb to her "roster" of men then proceeds to rant about Caleb...having a roster, that she was part of. Honestly, this is just exemplary of a certain breed of toxic feminism that seems rampant on social media now, one that propogates this idea that women are simultaneously strong, independent queens who dont need no man, whilst also perfect princesses who can do no wrong and who need to be protected from the evils of fuckboys like Caleb. It's moral pandering and perpetual adolescence. Have some emotional maturity, people!

My understanding of lovebombing is that it exists within the cycle of abuse. Excessive praise, gifts, etc are used by an abuser either before or as a way to make up for abusive behavior in order to get the abused person to trust them, stay with them, etc. It is the honeymoon phase of the cycle of abuse that makes the person being abused think that their abuser isn’t that bad and entices them to stay. after this and “couch guy” situation, i will just assume that any person who goes into so much detail about a dating scenario on tiktok is just inviting their audience to ruin the other person’s life. this is what tiktok is now, and i’ll give these girls the benefit of the doubt but i feel like at least one of them knew what they were inciting by publicly discussing and dramatizing this situation. not to mention the “sleuths” who are even more at fault because of what they did to “expose” this dude. literally NO one gained anything from this ordeal. tiktok now is just a collection of scenarios you’d see in a cyberbullying PSA

I also think “canceling” someone over something like this sends mixed messages about what is considered reprehensible behavior. For example, people that are known SAers are still famous on the internet, yet this man dating in a normal way gets him a relentless hate mob. I think people enjoy jumping on the novel situations, but to try to go and defend their hate as justifiable just blurs the lines of right and wrong in the eyes of the Internet

The one situation i can think of that is an actual "love bombing" is Shannon aka creepshowart here on RUclips bc she would send compliments etc to other creators but was also using them. If each person represents a drop in the bucket when it comes to the dog piling, then giant companies plastering this guys name over billboards and commenting on tiktoks in regards to this situation is a firehose.

This reminds me of the Ghosted TV show Drew Gooden talked about, which was already an incredibly uncomfortable show, but it's like tiktok took the show and brought it up to 100. (And also made somehow more unsafe.) In the show, the person who got ghosted hunted down the person who ghosted them. And the person who got ghosted asked the person who ghosted them a bunch of questions about why they got dumped. (It's an incredibly uncomfortable watch.)
Yes, being ghosted sucks. Even if what you think the dude did was wrong, that still doesn't warrant DOXXING him! (Which is a crime.)
I don't go on dating apps. But the people ik say that dating apps are like that. You won't click with everyone. I don't know enough about the dating scene, but idk if any of the girls said they were dating the dude.

How do these ppl not realise that their behaviour is levels worse than anything he has done??
edit: just got to the part of the unsolicited pics and that is more than kinda shitty I don't want ppl to think I'm downplaying that. as casey pointed out though this hate mob doesn't really care about the details they just see it as a tiktok trend to hop on for a week then forget about. This whole situation could have been a conversation around this type of shitty behaviour that's a result of dating apps and how men think it's okay to send women pictures like that. i agree with casey in that i thought this was fairly standard dating app behaviour. i thought it was generally understood that most people talk to a large amount of people at once to try and find someone right for them, and that ghosting was kind of a necessary evil. many if not most people of all genders struggle with trying to tell someone you're not interested anymore and it sucks but it doesn't make them abusive
