Netflix's Hype House Reality Show is an Absolute Disaster
Hey everyone welcome back to my channel and to the first video of 2022!!! So crazy!!!! For this weeks video I thought there was no better way to start off the year than to check out Netflix's new reality show about the Hype House! The show's been in production for what seems like ages considering they initially announced it quite a while ago but after a long wait it was finally released last Friday and I watched the whole thing so you don't have to or if you did watch it we can discuss :)
If you haven't heard of it yet Netflix decided to green light the series "Hype House" for a season (so far) that would go behind the scenes of the biggest (and at this point i think the last standing) tik tok content house full of big-time influencers trying to make it in Los Angeles. Obviously a few years ago when all these content houses started popping up there was a media frenzy over them but considering it's been so long since then I was pretty surprised that Netflix decided to do a series on them, and it turns out I wasn't the only one. From what it looks like online the reception to the series both before its release and after has been pretty unanimous confusion and/or criticism. But despite all that the shows here and it follows the lives of current members like Lil Huddy, Thomas Petrou, Alex Warren, Nikita Dragun, Larray, Kouvr, Vinnie Hacker and also looks back on previous members like Charli D'amelio, Dixie D'amelio and Addison Rae who have since moved on from the group.

@@wheelshoe i actually think because of how big social media is, and it probably wont die out, they’ll just have to figure out what “normal jobs” they can do within the entertainment/media industry. there’s probably a lot of things that they’ll be able to do because of their experience and following. will it be difficult? yeah but i bet all of them will naturally progress into a job that is still similar. they could probably even work for tiktok if they wanted to. or like the ones that are on twitch or wanna peruse music
I think the harder problem is that they probably see themselves as stars or their own bosses. I don't think with that mind set they can do "normal" job.

“Overall this show really wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t cringe it was just sad” I could not have said it better. I think the show was actually well edited and the drama was amusing. I was very much surprised.
Wish you acknowledged the editing out of sienna Mae tho because it’s insane how they cut her out so well you can’t even tell she was there.

If there's one good thing I can imagine will come out of this show's existence, it's that it might just help some kids who are idolizing/aspiring to the content house creator/tiktoker/influencer to see that it really, really ain't all that.
They are really messing I get like clothes or gadgets but literally food, that's insane

Most people dream of having that. the. Again she’s a year younger than me and last year and year before that my mental health was down in the dumbs and I’m just a random gay teen like I can’t imagine the stress and pressure she had to deal with

I think Netflix just kinda has a 3 season rule. But yeah they're really pretty random about it.

One thing that stuck out to me and my roommates during our hate watch was the way Alex and kouvrs relationship was just.. not healthy. While arguing is normal in a relationship, while Alex broke his foot kouvre dropped everything and lost money due to missed opportunities to help him and all he did was complain about not filming and making content. He dismissed all of her feelings the whole time and she basically acted as his mother for most of the show. Almost all of her stress could be attributed to Alex.
yeahhh when he talked about how she moved out to be with him and he was like “yep we’re uh, actually gonna live in a car”….they clearly are just together at this point more bc of what theyve been through together than the actual relationship bringing them joy. they remind me of catelyn and tyler from teen mom, but less serious. arrested development and that sort of thing

@@priyashab2214 that is so extra. Thomas is 22, Nikita is only three years older than him. The only gross part about her hanging out around them is her behaviour with Vinny especially since he’s not even 20 yet 🤢 but ya you must be super young to think it’s weird to be in your mid twenties hanging out with people in their early twenties. It’s just called having boundaries.

You do realize that production companies for netflix are different right? Its not like a "we have to cancel this 1 series to produce another" its a "this series didnt get that many people watching it/new subs for us, its not getting anothet season"

I don’t know if you’ve ever read Barret Swanson’s “The Anxiety of Influencers” but he stayed with this content house and gave a really in depth view into their life’s and worries with the instability of TikTok. I wish Netflix would have taken more of this approach with the series rather than the nothingness they gave lol

I feel like a huge reason why they fell off was bc of their attitude during the pandemic. All of them continuing to party and go to restaurants and then complaining about “not being able to make content” in their house of like 20 ppl. Like nobody feels bad for them lol
The part where they claim that the hype house is the one to blame for the female tik tokers fame, when they themselves were pretty popular before the hype house, has some misogynistic undertones.

I mean for me it just felt like everybody needs therapy. Like Thomas and Alex were straight up traumatized from their childhoods and tried to cover that up with hustle? I was sitting there watching and couldn't believe that nobody brought it up. Not even their girlfriends. Stop. Get some help.
i was shocked by how casually they talked about their trauma and brushed it off but their girlfriends did bring it up and tried to get them to take a break(thomas’s gf has major trauma she needs to deal with too ). i honestly blame the other hype house members because they were not doing their jobs and causing unnecessary stress.

@@katkay9923 alex had an abusive, alcoholic mom and his dad passed away when he was young, he was kicked out by his mom and was homeless for a while, he also takes care of his older brother (can’t find a job) and pays for his sister’s tuition i think. thomas had an abusive childhood (i think his mom’s boyfriend or something) and his parents were divorced when he was young. Mia(?) says she got a restraining order against her dad cuz he was stalking her.
@@lunamoon6390 Yeah that's true, but I also think that other hype house members working as they should would not resolve how wrong they take care of their trauma and issues. Yes, it would definitely help to not cause them unnecessary stress but these guys are deeply emotionaly hurt and anyone else but them won't change that.
i haven't seen the series and know none of these people, but just as a different point of view, the partners could have tried to have the more serious discussions privately (and that's honestly how it should be done). they deserve actual professional help though and could afford it, so hopefully they'll also pursue it some day.

I watched the show and the only thing that made me really upset with seeing how Thomas would defend the other members of the House for not doing the work he was clearly stressed out about. He would constantly say that he was running a business but the people in the house were his family so it was hard for him to put down his foot. Like the whole time I watching I was waiting for Thomas to stand up to them and say if you’re not gonna put in work there are hundreds of straight white boys that can replace you in an instant. There were a lot of annoying things in the show but I think that was the biggest one for me
The biggest annoyance for me was Nikita Dragun herself, but yeah that too
i think one of the bigger and more interesting moments in the show is when vinnie kisses a girl and his alleged 'fans' start attacking her for it. just goes to show how idol-obsessed people, younger ones especially can get and how they think they get to have and express their opinion on things. also, just because you follow someone on tiktok or instagram, it doesnt mean you know them, you are not privileged to anything that person says or does, especially not who they're romantically involved with.

I could literally care less about the D’Amelio sisters but I must say...it’s so stupid how Thomas thinks the Hype House made them famous. Charli would be successful with or without him. If anything SHE made HIM famous. Literally nobody knew who he was until she and Dixie associated with him. He’s honestly so cocky and arrogant and it pisses me off.
I mean being in the Hype Hoyse did grow their following alot. Also Charli and Addison really blew up when they started stealing content from black creators
Very refreshing and nuanced video considering the subject matter! It’s very easy to make a video just pointing out how cringe everything is (and to be fair, I do love a healthy handful of pointing-out-cringe content) but it’s nice to hear creators take burnout and work conditions seriously, even when talking abt ppl you don’t necessarily like
The biggest outcome for me was, that I saw a ton of traumatized kids living in a mansion for basically free. I felt sorry for Thomas the entire time, imagine bringing people under a roof together to work and no one decides to work, I would riot.
as someone who is immunocompromised/extremely high risk for complications (i’m currently on 3 different high dose immunosuppressant medications) it never ceases to baffle me how little perspective these people have.watching them try to frame themselves as these beacons of positivity just feels so patronizing, especially as someone who’s life is in direct risk by the type of actions they have taken
i’m also immunocompromised, completely agree. it’s crazy to see how apathetic and unaware people are. nikita has hosted a bunch of (absolutely no social distancing) lockdown parties that could have been superspreader events, and then fact that larry KNEW he was positive but didn’t care and chose to party and risk infecting others is just sickening to me. and then they have the audacity to complain about a weeks quarantine in their million dollar mansion whilst all of their work and income streams are online anyway.

my 57 year old mother has been watching this and when i went into the living room i was judging everybody on this show and she got SO OFFENDED. she was like THESE KIDS ARE WORKING SO HARD. i died a little inside
we as a society do not talk about creator fatigue and how the internet affects mental health enough. the pandemic alone probably did us all some brain damage
my absolute favorite part of watching your videos is that every single time you post is like: “here is a video about something slightly traumatizing you’ve never hear about before” also love the bedroom plants

Damn, I just watched this two days ago. My friend and I were just thoroughly baffled by how toxic the whole environment was. Like, these guys need therapy and financial advisors. There was nooo work/life-balance, a whole lot of gaslighting and really weird intimate moments shared on camera. It didn't feel organic, it felt like Thomas was behind the camera with a gun pressuring them to MAKE CONTENT.
I had so much second hand embarassment watching miss Nikita Dragun inserting herself into the dramas of literal teenagers

Proud of you. I started watching it out of sheer curiosity/a craving for cringe but I only made it 5 min in. I too thought, why are they releasing this now as opposed to like 2 years ago when The Hype House actually had…hype? I only recognize like 3 people living there.
It also made me jealous for some 18 yr old to say in the intro something along the lines of “I post videos from my bed, get paid millions and live in a mansion in LA.” I live here too and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous and tempted to start lip synching/dancing to top 40 hits.

I was never too familiar with the old hype house but at least could recognize a good portion of the members because they were constantly in the news. Now, there’s barely anyone I can say I’ve ever heard of and I think that’s so indicative of the current social media space. An overflow of supply with a lack of demand. It’s such an unsustainable model it’s crazy and I’m honestly shocked that house still exists. Especially considering a lot of the members just blatantly refuse to do their jobs. I think I’d go crazy if I was Petrou.
I’m in the school of thought that they had to play up the lack of plot and storyline between larray and nikita bc two hype house members are in like a SA scandal so they didn’t include them in the series

Thank you for not defaulting to the cringe factor. This is the first actual take I've heard on the show. It's unfortunate, but I feel like these content creators would benefit from being more open about the stress in a way that they don't profit from their breakdown or serious conversations. Social media has been terrible lately because the people on our front pages are so money-obsessed that it ruins what their followers came for in the first place. I don't really blame these people for behaving the way they do on social media (barring the obvious morally unsound decisions). It's really just pitiful. And it won't change anytime soon because it's clearly working. They have followers and views and sponsorships, so why stop?

this show was depressing to me because it shows how little most of these kids think about fame, so they either get bogged down in sponsorships or try out music which isn't any safer of a career path! it's basically magcon all over again and it's wild to me that this will continue to happen in perpetuity.

hard to tackle something like creating a health work to life balance when you don't know what that is. No one is taught how to do anything in the 'adult world', we are so ill prepared on a physical an mental level it's redonk. It leads to a majority of adults being emotionally immature and being less skilled in critical thinking, two things that are so fucking important and effect arguably every aspect of a persons life. We still don't have 'regular' jobs functioning to support its workers, so the crazy increase of these new ones over the course of these past 10ish years has just further made the issue of my point before not only more highlighted but worse. Right back to 'suck it up so you don't lose your home' instead of actual support and safety.

Yeah, I find a lot of these 'documentary ' style tv deep dives don't ask the necessary questions. It's always just a skin deep dive into whatever topic.
I binged it over two days and tbh it was pretty entertaining. Was it groundbreaking? No. Did I know anyone in it besides maybe 4 people? No but either way it wasn’t the worst way to pass the time 😂
