Lawyer here! Public defense attorneys are usually only available for criminal cases, which is not always the case for civil/family suits depending on where you live. Also, paralegals are not always lawyers in training since you need to have a paralegal certification (at least in my location). Usually lawyers in training are law clerks or temporary associates.

Hey there, Can you please confirm to our boys here that Chat GPT is definitely NOT the way to do legal research? At least two attorneys in NYC face sanctions and possible disbarment after Chat GPT just wholesale invented to cases to answer their legal queries. They referenced these cases in a brief and NEITHER lawyer (whole ass partners with Westlaw access) verified the case was real and correctly interpreted. Judge was not amused they based an entire brief on cases that did not exist.

My mother divorced my father when I was just a baby, and I never had a relationship with him. When I was about 20, the state somehow found a bank account belonging to him and seized it for back child support. He had never paid a penny and made himself look like he didn't have anything. Maybe he got lazy and thought enough time passed. My siblings and I were all adults by then. My mom ended up getting around $60k. And, I just thought to check - cheers for an OP who came back with updates! Baby actually WAS named Karen… until she started daycare. You cannot get child support from another family member unless the father of the child is a minor. She can file with the state and the state can provide some support -- Story 2: You cannot go after the new wife's income to cover child support. They are not responsible for the child. It is off his income only and he has to submit financials and they have to be notarized. The "adopted child" means he had a kid and had his parental rights terminated so that child was able to be adopted by someone else. And they never make a parent pay a lump sum of back support - they tack on additional monthly payments. Also - even if the guy had a kid move in with him, it will not erase back support. And back support has to be paid in full, even after the kid turns 18.

In the US, you cant get support from a non parent family member unless that family member already agreed to take on that role in the court. If it is a non-parent, unless they are listed on the birth certificate, you cannot go after that person for support. Paternity must first be established before support can be ordered. some child support info:
1- when you are on government support they will go after the non custodial parent even if he is in jail, and while they generally don't expect him to pay while in jail...the debt will accrue and they will garnish tax returns and paychecks.
2- child support will NEVER be calculated against a spouse of the paying party. IE, they cannot go after the new wife in this situation for child support money
3- back child support is limited. some states will only issue child support back to the date you FILED to get it, some will go back a couple years. they wouldn't order this guy to pay retroactive child support for 15 years, particularly since there was already an "order for support" for the insurance.
4- for whatever reason, changes of income are supposed to be reported by the paying party (which like NEVER happens) or the receiving party needs to file periodic audits, which of course if they don't know there was an income change they wouldn't know to do. so the dad in this story could have been making good money for a long time but unless he reported it, or she asked to audit him.... the changes basically don't apply. it's only after she files for change of support that the clock starts running generally.

This happened to me, but worse. The child support division of the attorney general started taking child support out of my check each week. This went on for several months. The woman was a Mexican woman, from a state I had never been to. It turned out that the man was a illegal immigrant who stole my social security number.

When it comes to naming conventions I don't believe there are any laws. I did a lot of research on this in naming my own child several years ago. I think there are some specific examples, that perhaps were the ones you cited, that came up in local jurisdictions. The US has some of the greatest lienency of anywhere regarding naming. I wasn't interested in naming my child anything strange, but not being married to the father, and believing I would be the primary parent I wanted our child to have both our names. So basically our child has both last names (no hyphen), and the father is not involved. They have a first name, middle, and two last names. The father is also from another culture/language so he provided the middle name and I the first. Therefore, my surname has basically become their defacto surname. I'm glad that my child's heritage is reptesented in their name, and we share the same surname- or otherwise it would make life more complicated for me. Furthermore, my child, is multiracial and doesn't look a whole lot like me (or their father). So there's another reason why I am so glad they have my name.
I know these things do not sound significant, but when it comes to managing and rearing children, there is so much security involved. We live in a big city and my child attends public schools so little things like signing my child in and out of school (because they are still young), is subject to scrutiny. I'm glad they have these measures in place. But I'm glad to avert any additional questions or problems by clearly having the same name. Having both the maternal and paternal surnames are common in Latin America and other cultures. I highly recommend to any expectant mothers out there to do the same because you never know what's going to happen and you want to have the same name as your kid! And it does not need to be at the expense of the father's name either. So thanks to American naming conventions your kids can have as many last names as you like.

If your cousin gets into an accident, but doesn't have insurance, should you be held liable for the difference he can't cover? Come on now.

YTLDR: my ex quit every job when he had to start paying more than the minimum 25 amount for the state
He never paid for anything as he was always broke and he never really called or saw his two kids.
Just as I had enough and filled for a review since he had a job and since my kids were 3 and 2 he only paid 25 a month. Kids are now 14 and 16. 3 months after filling for a review, he decided to play hangman irl.
Sad , yes but only because now he never has a chance to make it up to his 3 kids. Yes 3 he got his partner before me pregnant 6 months before I meet him. He only saw that kid twice in his life and never admitted to being his father.
You could say he was/is the ultimate deadbeat dad.

Cousin’s spouse disappeared when she was pregnant with second child. His family never liked her and wouldn’t help. Years later he moves back to be by his family. He has a new wife and child. Cousin files for back child support. He counter sues for custody. In court she’s awarded back child support. He is denied custody because he skipped out without worrying about outcome of children’s lives. He was denied any visitation because he was seen as a flight risk. His parents tried suing for grandparents rights (visitation). Court shut them down because they had ignored the children for years and had helped their son stay hidden from attempts to collect child support.
