I feel you. My son was born one year and 3 days after my mom died from breast cancer. I waited until I was 5 months along before I told my family that I was pregnant.
OP's family were at that dinner to grieve/celebrate the life that their mother had. It was no place to announce a pregnancy. If SIL really wanted to let everyone know in person, there was still another day left in the trip AFTER the memorial dinner.
Op didn't ruin the moment, the moment was crushed by the announcement of the pregnancy. Not even 30 seconds of silence for Op's mom, her dad didn't even get his butt cheeks back on his chair, after his beautiful speach about his wife , then it's disregarded in a blink.

OKOP Storytime: When I was about 7-8 months pregnant with my oldest (now 11), I was out shopping and a older women I did not know came up and starting rubbing my belly asking about my due date. I already have issues with being touched without concent and this was not the first time someone had pulled this during the pregnancy (why do people think it is okay to touch a pregnant belly without concent?!?!) And I was sick of it. I told the lady that I wasn't pregnant and that it was a side effect of my stomach cancer. The lady turned red and ran away. I know I'm the Ahole but I don't care.

I don’t know the time difference between knitting and crochet but I was gifted a crocheted blanket for my daughter from my bestie’s mum. I still have the blanket…my daughter is 9 😂 I love the love and time that was put into it and can’t just toss it.

At my mom's funeral my cousin was bragging about getting married she was smiling ear to ear it was very hard time. So good news at the right timing.
My fiance and I got engaged a day or two before his brother was hospitalized. It went south fast, and he ended up being pulled off life support. It was very awkward that most of his family found out at the viewing or funeral that we had gotten engaged just before. With everything going on, we didn't announce on social media until after the funeral. It felt very odd getting congratulated at a funeral.

No way, OP is NOT the asshole. There may have been a worse time to announce the pregnancy, but I cannot think of one, right now. Her dad hadn't even finished ruminating, and this night was about her mother. It is inappropriate to, "lighten the mood", unless the mood lightener, is a funny memory or anecdote about the deceased. If she didn't know better before, she should have immediately apologized, once she was told better. It is weird, and gross.

Story with miscarriage jokes: OP should definitely had direct conversation that her friend that her feeling had changed toward this kind of jokes. Before this shift they have this kind of relationship as normal. Common sense sideways. What is normal for someone, may not be normal for another human. Her friend is not a telepath. How did she have to know if OP does not tell her?? It is similar when woman wants something from man but did not tell him what. And after that she is angry at him that he did not do it. That is nonsence. Conversation is the basis of healthy relationship.This situation is messy all and all but her friend maybe is not so clearly crowned A-hole as everyone is hinting.
While I agree that communication is important, OP used humor as a coping mechanism, likely because she isn't that great at talking about her feelings. I'm autistic and bad a social cues, but if I joke with someone and they don't laugh and change the subject, I don't make a similar joke again. I find it hard to believe OP's best friend really couldn't read the room without a direct conversation, until after she had made a dozen miscarriage jokes OP didn't laugh at and OP said stop.

Paternity tests are not 'illegal' per say in France. They have to be court ordered. In France all children are represented by the Gov and not the parents. This is to stop parents using their children against each other. Also making sure that the child's best interest is the focus.

The dinner was definitely not the time to make the announcement, but if SIL had genuinely missed her MIL and emotionally said (at some other point during the trip) she was sad that MIL would never know her child, I wouldn't have been mad. That makes it more about MIL and grandchild and less about her pregnancy reveal.

Just fyi paternity tests are not illegal in France, it’s however a different procedure ! They are mostly done within the framework of a legal procedure to be exact : to get child support or to prove that your child isn’t yours for exemple. But it also occurs for like blood type verification when pregnant. It’s just illegal to buy some « diy » ones for personal reasons and both or the three people involved need to be made aware and consent to it ✨

maybe in other parts of europe but in the uk it’s rare as we don’t “skip grades” and high school is age 11-16; college is 16-18; and then uni 18-20/21/22 depending on how many years your degree is.. plus op said herself that she’s in college (“i’m a full time college student”) 😅 plus no one says “full time uni student” as we still have days free / lots of free time [supposed to be “independent study time] at uni; especially in first year when the workload is much lighter ☺️

Story 1: the sister in law is the a-hole. It's okay to not be happy all the time, especially when grieving a loved one. Why did she think people needed to be cheered up? I dont know if her intention were attention-seeking, but it was definitely a bad time to be announcing any sort of big news, good or bad.

2nd story: COMMUNICATION IS KEY, always! i have a friend that used to make jokes about her chest size all the time. at first i laughed, then we started to make them together. at last, i didn’t realise she stopped doing it because she started to feel insecure and it wasn’t comfortable for her. but whenever i said it, she laughed. not as hard, but she did, so i didn’t take the hint… then she stated compensating that by berating and abandoning me whenever we went out drinking in our group. the alcohol supported her actual feelings, but she didn’t want to cinfront me with the problem. at last we had a big fight and almost stopped being friends, but we both apologized and settled that no jokes about our bodies and that she has to be upfront with me, especially when something’s wrong… not saying either of those sides is or isn’t the AH, but it’s hard to figure out what someone’s hiding from you
so my sister had a newborn baby that she brought to the funeral of my grandma.it was the first time any of our relatives saw the baby and someone could argue that it was not the time, because the day was supposed to be about my grandma and not about my adorable niece (my gradmas first and only greatgrandchild, she got to see her before passing away) none of us saw it that way. it was uplifting and gave us some light on a very very dark day. looking at her adorable innocent face saved me that day. holding her made it feel bearable that we just buried my moms mom. So I can see both sides in the first story.

The UK you finish secondary school (high school) at age 16. Then you must either be in education until you are 18 whether this be college or sixth form you can also complete an apprenticeship if you wish, university usually starts at 18 and you will have already chosen your chosen course by this point.

With the baby shower one, to me it sounds like the pregnant friend was being snippy because OP told her to stop with the miscarriage jokes, which probably caused a moment of tension and also maybe made the pregnant friend feel called out about the joke. Sometimes when people get called on or realize their bad behavior, they react with anger. And also that tense moment may have taken some attention away from the friend/felt like the day/mood was ruined. All of which could have caused the "well it's not your baby shower". I think the friend just felt uncomfortable and annoyed about it and took it out on OP with that comment.
the the 1. pregnancy ... I feel there are situations, when announcing a pregnancy at a funural: I know someone who lost her husband to cancer, the MIL was devestated (as was everyone else present), her only child gone. The aquaintance took the MIL at the side and wispered "I am pregnant, a part of him lives on" in her ear. Yes she mae the MIL cry, but it were happy tears, they did not spread it load and to everyone, but the MIL was consoled a bit

For the OP who ended up sleeping with her coworker who is denying her baby, she has to remember to put herself in his shoes. In her mind, she only slept with two men and since one of them is black and her baby is mixed it’s a “no brainer” that it’s her coworker’s. In his mind, though, he was initially excited but now that he knows that she couldn’t even figure out who fathered her child until she gave birth to it because she slept with two men around the same time, it would seem like OP is a bit promiscuous. So, even if she claims it’s his, it could very well be another black man’s.

OP is hands down the a-hole. People who just get passive aggressive and "drop hints" about their feelings are insanely annoying and you're not an unempathetic person for not reading their mind.
