OP is not an ahole for joking about breaking up. That was his inexperienced way of putting a hard boundary down after being ignored the SEVERAL times that he said no and asked herto drop it.

I think it could either be a mild ESH or NAH just because they are both still figuring out how to communicate in healthy ways. Seems like they didn’t get to see a lot of healthy communication growing up, especially related to sex and intimacy - the important part though is they are both trying to learn and willing to admit mistakes/apologize when needed

@commanderswaddles3483 that is a very nice way of expressing it, I haven’t heard someone say it like that but looking back yeah i can see me saying effectively the same thing. I was on a business trip one year and the wife of the one associate, when i mentioned i am allergic to balsamic vinegar when we were ordering food and i had asked the waiter I’m allergic do you use balsamic in the,….. before the waiter answers she asks me in an almost too cheerful way, what does it do to you? I was shocked a bit at HOW cheerful she was asking, i turned to her and said loudly, it does the kind of things that if you feed it to me i will wrap my body tightly around you and wont let go for the next 4 - 8 hours of hell you put me through.
When everyone went silent I realized that was said rather aggressively,…. At which point said lady looked confused and asked me why would i do that, i said “projectile vomiting and diarrhea. “
      More silence.
Then she said sorry i asked, and i said you should be i didnt want to have to talk like that at the dinner table i just said i was allergic talking to the waiter. I mean the whole office never forgets my allergy now.
Looking back that was me putting a hard no boundary without articulating properly. The boundary being that what i say about myself is not entertainment or negotiable. These things happen.
Now that was a tame occurrence, but if a boyfriend asked me to do a threesome with another woman i would have replied with
“why not with another guy? I wanna watch you get boinked from behind,.. “. so fast i wouldnt have had time to feel the thought forming in my brain first.
I swear my mouth runs faster than ussain bolt sometimes it enters the matrix territory.

For the cancer story, a coworker had his wife of 25 years get a pretty serious cancer. Treatable but it definitely affected her mentally. He was more that willing to stand by her but she became extremely verbally and emotionally abusive to him and their kids. After a couple of years, he decided to leave to protect his kids. One was out of the house but his son was a teenager and starting to show serious signs of withdrawal and depression. After the divorce, both his and his kids mental health greatly improved. As far as I know, she's still the same and blames everyone else for everything.

Cancer wife OP, noo 😭 I love how he took quick and efficient steps in healing after she dumped him. Her coming back is just fucking CRAZY. Sofia is right that wife can absolutely doubt their relationship, being faced so strongly with death. But she didn't even try to speak with him. He slaved away for her until she physically left the house. OP obviously loves her but I fear the rest of his life with his ex-wife will absolutely be a traumatic back and forth. "All men leave", well YOU left HIM. I think he should do as he likes, but he owes her NOTHING.

On the cancer story, the wife lost me when she hadn't been thinking straight and my reaction was, "The divorce took a year...that's how long you had to try and mend things!" And of course, the starting point of mending things would have been therapy, both individual and couples.

Red flag: someone who refuses to go to therapy and gets mad when someone brings it up.
The irony of the woman who divorced her husband, is that she was so blinded by the fear of him leaving her, she never took accountability for the hurt she caused leaving him! She never reached out to him in those years and only after seeing him did she decide to reach out. Nah. OP is right about being afraid she will leave again. She did her research and found a pattern on men leaving sick wives, while she started the pattern or leaving when things get tough.

Cancer lady story: She’s incredibly selfish like someone said. It’s all about her, it’s all about what she wants, when she wants it. OP’s not a husband or partner to her, she’s something to use for herself that she decides when she does and doesn’t want to deal with him. She doesn’t respect him as a person or his own autonomy, *ESPECIALLY* when she threw the drink in his face, that showed her true colors. It’s her life, everything should be done for her, according to her. OP was smart to not get back together with her because she’s the type of woman that at the first sign of a better opportunity of a partner, she would immediately go after it.

I’m so glad that the second OP did not give in to his ex. I’m chronically ill with multiple things. I’ve had former partners leave because of it. It’s not stopped me from trying to find someone who is ok with how I have to do things and is supportive in the ways I need it on some occasions, and I have someone so good now that before I officially sat him down and explained my chronic migraines he figured it out, told me a detail that helps me with my part time job on my bad days with it, and checks in if I mention it being bad after I’ve taken meds to see if it’s working. I don’t act or treat him like he’s going to leave so I need to leave first, that’s insane.

Before my dad died of cancer when I was 15 and he was 38 (which now I'm 33 I can see just how young that is), he actively pushed me and my siblings away. He hadn't been with my mum for a long time and was pretty irresponsible but it went to a whole new level. He told my mum that he didn't want us to be sad when he died so thought distancing himself and being dismissive of us in his final months was somehow doing us a favour... But that's not how love works and we never got to build the memories we could have unfortunately 😓. Death or fear or death makes people not think rationally, I wonder if the wife didn't want to hurt her husband or be a burden (they may say later on, I'm only half way through!) and her way of distancing was to be unreasonable by highlighting the potential for cheating. The husband would likely not have accepted, "I don't want to hurt you if I die".

Breast cancer story, there are absolutely no AHs. Yea, she should have gone to therapy. But when you're in that dark of a place, it is hard to see that, so I totally get it. Could have avoided the divorce, but who knows. That being said she did leave OP so now OP doesn't owe it to her to get back together. Some time apart isn't always a bad thing for a relationship, (my current one has 6 breaks in the past) but they have to mutually decide that is what they want.
I'm going to start a Therapy chant though cuz they both need therapy in or out of the relationship. I completely agree with the comment you guys read.
Holy crap her response!! She hasn't grown at all!!! And throwing her coffee in his face for saying he wouldn't get back with her??? Wtf... she sucks so much for her attitude at the end. She needs therapy so freaking bad!!!!

For the first story, girl needs to respect OP's boundaries. Especially when it comes to sexual stuff. Not everyone is into the same stuff as you and if you truly love someone, you know when to compromise or just respect boundaries. My boyfriend doesn't like having his nipples touched because of a personal issue with his childhood. I respect his body and his choice. It's not that hard to understand a simple "no".

Story one, not the AH and break up. She isn’t respecting the mans boundaries and as a woman i wouldn’t tolerate that from a man,.. a boundary is a boundary i don’t care who you are. I think Riley misunderstood the tame comment. I think op meant what they normally try is tame by comparison although the thought it was kinky, but the pegging thing just threw op for a loop. It’s far from what he would call exploratory normally. It’s important to practice saying no.

15:37 Anna is a fucking red flag! My mother got diagnosed with breast cancer but instead of it being a treatable one. They gave my Mom 6 months to live at best. It was 1999. My Mom was a little over 30. She didn’t leave my Dad. She stayed they didn’t get along very well but in many ways her getting sick brought them closer together. Breast cancer killed my Mom in her late 30’s to early 40’s. All 3 of her sisters got diagnosed mostly with breast cancer except one was diagnosed with colon cancer and NONE OF THEM EVER ABANDONED THEIR MARRIAGE OR FAMILY. Ann is a red flag if there ever was one. She left her marriage likely to “ go live her best single life with her girlfriends” likely a reaction to the terrible news but yes op can absolutely fucking blame her. She didn’t just make a oopsy and forget to come home she made a choice that took a very long time and a lot of steps for them finalize. She choice that. I’m sympathetic to Ann I’m most likely going to get some type of breast cancer at some point ever younger than my great grandmother on both sides died in their late 30’s to early 50’s depending on the cancer they got. There is one exception my grandpa on my Dads side who outlived 2 wives and 2 of his 3 sons and honestly I don’t know what one is worse. Watching the person you love deteriorate in front of you or to be the one dying faster and more painfully than everyone else.

8:40 my feelings as well John. It is so sad that parents are so willing and able to cut off their child for being their own person.
In no shape or form did I ever feel that way about my parents (mainly because my mom's sad excuse for a mother is a narcissist) and my children know that I will ALWAYS be there for them. To love and to support them. I'm proud of who THEY are choosing to become as teenagers.
I feel so bad for anyone who has parents that do anything less than love them unconditionally, I'd be your mom if I could

OP with the wife who left first-the only possible excuse she has is that she had a good partner, and all these other women had terrible experiences with different people. And the peer pressure of jealousy that women have against a woman with a good man is REAL. And I’ve been there, I’ve been jealous, but damn, I don’t want to stay miserable and make my friends in good relationships join me in my misery!!
And it’s hard to see red flags and manipulation in the moment. But refusing to go to therapy is not helping anything. It’s not the answer in and of itself, manipulative people can use therapy against targets, but hopefully it brings some clarity.

i'm strongly under the impression that op's ex wife has always been that way. i have ptsd, and i've spent the better part of my adult life cleaning up behind myself after lashing out at people. mental health, even if caused by trauma, is not a 'get out of jail free' card. she sounds like a wretched, selfish person. i can't get over her claims that he was being 'unfair,' she sounds like a kindergartener.
also, not to be pedantic, but playing video games isn't a useless activity! it can improve your hand-eye coordination and neuroplasticity, and besides, it's just fun. but seriously, doing the dishes when someone has cooked for you is the bare minimum.

Not a Christian but my job involves working with many practicing Christians (different denominations - Orthodox, Catholics, protestants and their subcategories and others) and their children who they abandoned. So many families do this to their children. Protestants the least, but they are also the least religious and least committed to live religiously. For someone who isn't religious it is hard to understand how serious crime it is to live together unmarried, because they are used to it and have normalized it for themselves. To help people picture it - imagine you lived in a society where it is normal to hunt people. You think it is awful and a terrible crime, people around you don't think so. They influence your kids and your kids start hunting people for fun too. Then you have to decide can you live and look at them the same way despite the awful crime they do, or you can't. Some can, some can't (as we know there are parents who visit their murdering children in the jail and others who cut them off). So rest of society who think that hunting people is fine will say - how can those parents do it? The ones who don't think that hunting humans is right will say one of the two - I can understand why they did it, but I wouldn't do it; or I totally understand them and would do the same. Fornication is a terrible crime in most religions, if not mistaken bible has death penalty for that (or as a minimum for adultery, not sure fornication too or just adultery) so it is considered among the highest level of crimes that person can do, you are just used to commiting that crime and use a different law book so you don't view it as a crime. We can debate here who is right or wrong is it a crime or it isn't, but I'm explaining here the idea itself how truly religious people view such action and where they are coming from and why it is so hard for them to accept it. They might accept the child if child stops relationship, as it is after all their child, but to accept and love that other person is extremely hard (like you would maybe forgive your murdering child but not his hunting partner, and quite likely would even blame that partner for what your child did). And they can't participate in wedding as then they would support that crime (like you buying your children hunting equipment). I don't justify their actions, and I think they are not productive, I'm just illustrating for those who are not religious or sometimes going to church "religious" the mindset of such parents who live their life by that what they consider laws of God.

Story three, dump him he is dangerous and it wont get better in fact when kids come along it will be exponentially worse. Time to go.
Also, leave while he is away, i say that because a lot of partners get attacked or maybe even killed in the act of trying to get away after telling the violent partner they are leaving. If he is leaving a few days arrange everything,.. he leaves you move asap. You’re never coming back. Call the parents afterwards and tell them the wedding is off and explain your fear of the man and that its best he is encouraged to forget her. Then you can call him and say over the phone you broke up, and wont return. You don’t have to be in person, just say i am breaking up with you because i fear you, you have given me every reason to believe you will be violent with me in the future, so its done never to be revisited,.. any contact again will be through lawyers and police so don’t come knocking or following me. Put the hard no down. Telling him in person it’s over is a privilege not a right and only partners you don’t fear violence from deserve that respect. She is afraid he could be violent. She should not be in person with him again.
It sucks but i have been there and yeah, i broke up over the phone. It was a live call not a text, but thats all was worthy given the situation.

On another note, even as a liberal feminist, I still don't understand why calling a woman a "female" is a red flag, especially when women call men "males" as well, often with the adjectives "white" "old" and "entitled" etc. But I never thought the "male" part of the phrase was derogatory. Men call us much worse than "females," so I don't know why we aren't more angry at that

For the first story I feel so sad for people whose family member's ego toward religion is so brutal they hurt family. That's not a religion I would want to be a part of.

Story two,.. op’s wife left him when she was sick despite him doing so much for her,.. what happens when it’s reversed? If she wont stay with him when she is the sick person whats gonna make her stay when he is the sick one? She leaves at the drop of a hat, she is selfish trying to interrupt all his work and efforts to heal. She left him. It’s a done deal. Leave him alone.
Also the comment about i wasn’t in the right head space you cant hold me responsible for it,.. that doesn’t work in a court of law,.. your drunk you drove and killed someone its still murder,.. i think involuntary manslaughter. If your high on drugs your still responsible,.. btw cancer meds are drugs like illegal drugs and drugs are mind altering. It’s not a defense for a crime yet somehow you’ve got immunity when it’s just your relationship???? You are responsible. She was capable for thinking to divorce, and hire a lawyer to still make her dr appointments etc, she had mental capacity she could reason it, she was being unreasonable and agree to the therapy and stopping the divorce for no reason as clearly her sister even was like STOP, get therapy. She is responsible.
Tin hat ,….. the wife wanted sex with strangers before she “died”, or the brush with death made her realize she had wild oats to sow, so divorced, she survived and later see’s op and realizes hey wait i still haven’t met someone as good as him and i want the services back,.. but she doesn’t want the man, hence why she doesn’t need therapy because yeah she doesn’t, she doesn’t want op the man, she just wants her unpaid employee back. He is convenient to her. You don’t need therapy for a convenience.

    1) Let's say someone stabs you. You later find out that they were in a state of psychosis and completely out of their minds with mental illness when it happened. The stab wound does not match The stab wound does not magically heal. You're feelings and your hurt are still valid even if it is out of character for the person/there is a reason that it happened.
    2) Her being mad at him for "not considering" (which he did) her mental stay at the time is extremely hypocritical because she's ignoring his
    3) Even if she left purely because of mental illness caused by stress, who's to say that won't happen again? Cancer can come back. Other stressors in life can happen. How can he trust that she won't bail when the going gets tough?
    4) She could so easily work to mend the trust issues if she were willing to go to therapy, but she won't even do the bare minimum to help heal her relationship. She doesn't really care about him
