please tell me should take a7iv or sony fx 30. for best video quality please suggest me i am confused 🤔
This was a brilliant video - thank you - I got an A7IV but after seeing your video, Im now also thinking of getting the FX30 as it does 16bit RAW which I wasn't aware of at the time.
@@SuchetB16bit downsampled to 12bit to ssd with atomos v+.
@@PwningGerZ oh I see - then I’m not too cool with it, thank you for letting me know, as I also have a SIGMA fp which does 12BIT RAW CDNG video anyway, so it’s not worth me getting the FX30.
@@SuchetB it’s still great but it’s cropped. But it’s pure raw. 12bit Prores RAW is better than any other raw, large files but so smooth to edit, so much dynamic range. For $1800 that’s a steal. Shoot in 4k60 Prores 422 HQ for full resolution with atomos v+.
I really hope that I’m not actually the first person to like this video 11 months after its posted.
The production quality on this is amazing man. So much work and so much value.
These two cameras compliment each other so very well. Owning both of them makes it possible to cover any video and photo need a guy could think of. With APSC lenses for the video work and FF for photos, the options are limitless! You can set them both up with the identical video settings and there is literally no difference in quality. Some people talk crap about the low light ability of the FX30, but in my experience, it’s amazing! But if you need more for the darker scenes, switch over to the a7iv and you can shoot any scene, in any lighting condition. They’re both really amazing.
Hey, thanks so much for the insight. I agree with everything that you are saying. The fX30 IS amazing. But, which one do you prefer overall?
I love your cinematic introduction, shots and music. Good job Joe!
Thank you for that encouragement. I'm trying to go next level with these videos instead of the standard. I'm happy that translated to you. Thanks so much for the comment
Great comparison. Probably one of the best comparisons between these two cameras I've seen. Others have left out details that are important for considering these two cameras. You covered them all. Well done.
Thank you so much. That is so nice of you. I try my best to keep in every detail, but it does become a little tricky sometimes. So thanks for the encouragement.
I have been watching your ZV-1 videos non stop and it’s aided me in my decision to go with it over the ZV-E10, a decision that’s taken me weeks to stew over! I’ve just now subscribed when I realized for some reason I wasn’t yet. Your videos are amazing and well thought out, and I actually feel confident in my choice with your help as compared with other reviewers. I’ll be sure to come back here whenever it’s time for me to upgrade.
Thanks so much Jenna, this comment is very encouraging. I really appreciate it. Are you starting off as a beginner? And also, please tell me what you think about your Zve10 when you get it. I would love to know.
hey jenna why did you pick the zv1 over e10?
It is always great to watch your comparison videos. I have fx30 and I really enjoy using it with sony gm 15mm f1.4 lens. Thanks Joe!
Thank you, I appreciate it
What an incredible video. I've been going back and forth between these to camera's and this helped me get one step closer to my decision
Thanks man! I’m really glad it helped
Man, this is fire. Excelent video!
All questions answered! AMAZING. Thanks so much, Joe!
Great, I am so glad that it helped. Do you have either of these cameras?
Hi Joe.. Loved the intro which was well written, also the way the video was produced and the ending. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Which camera do you prefer?
nice breakdown, thanks for your professional opinion, still not sure which way to go as you always think 'what if I do want to take some photos at a later stage'
Great video! I'm really beginning to love the authentic vibe of your channel! I use the 14mmGM on FX30 to shoot with and it is amazing. The last video I shot, I forgot to turn of 120fps so the angle was so tight, but when I turned it off, it's the perfect vlogging and cinematic combo. My new run and gun set!
Hey Francois, that sounds like you have a great setup. I can't tell you how many times I forget to set a setting and the get home to find out I set something wrong. I need a checklist like pilots have to fly. Thanks so much for your kind words
@@thefilmalliance I'm happy to not feel like The Lone Ranger. I should add a checklist as well. Keep up the GREAT work!
@@3rebornxd Thanks bro
Might be a dumb question, but when you go into crop mode on the A7iv, does it also lose out on that aperture and subject separation?
No it’s just the fob that changes
@@felixblhf1181 what’s FOB stand for?

Thank you for this vid, ive been eyeballing the FX3 to replace my A7IV but after watching this I feel confident that I should simply add a FX30 to my kit and I really have it all. Bless. Keep killing ish too.
Hey Michael, that's very kind of you. Thank you for saying that. What makes up your kit?
@@thefilmalliance A7iv + 6600 | sony 24mm GM, Sigma 24-70, Tamron 70-180, apsc lenses are 16 + 30 Sigmas
All I have now is an a6000, if the FX30 had a mechanical shutter it would be great for me. I’ll honestly keep using my camera. I know it’s a big jump, but I’ll keep getting more lenses and when the successor to the a6xxx line comes, I’ll be there. All I want is 4k and a flip screen tbh. I’m not buying a ZVE10 just because I feel like they’re gonna come out with a better 10 bit camera next year.
Really enjoy your content! I've been watching the last couple of days and learning so much. Your style is so entertaining as well - the Black Mirror comment by another viewer is spot on. So, I'm getting started as a content creator focusing on vlogging sports, with some facility visits, interviews, practice and game/stadium content; as well as some in in-home "studio" work. Most of the content will be vlogging to RUclips and/other soc med, but also want to be able to get some great pics. Because of the sports content focus, do you have a recommendation regarding choosing between the FX30 or A7IV?
Great video, but there are 2 things that should be pointed out: the dual native iso on the a7iv is 800 and 3200 which makes a big difference. Second thing is about dynamic range, on the a7iv is 15.5 rated stops, and from real world testing I can say it's a little notable compared to the fx30. Not a big deal but it should be pointed out.
Yes absolutely, thanks so much for the pointers. I really appreciate it.
Excellent, except for one thing. I was hoping to decide between the two cameras. Now the only thing I'm certain of is that I need both!
Haha, that's great. They are definitely hard to choose between. If you get them, please let me know which one you prefer.
What did u get?
Me too
One has to be crazy to get the a7iv to use it mostly for video. Get the FX30 is you plan to use the camera for video. If you are a still photographer using the camera just occasionally for video, then get the a7IV.
Very informative and answered several of my questions. Thanks!
Thanks
Hey, I have been watching your content for a while. Awesome work. What's better for vlogging and travelling on RUclips?
Fx30 or the older a7s iii? I'm asking because of price and future choices.
Your intro gave me chills, you pulled me in like CRAZY! Unbelievably good video as usual. Can I ask you what are those light rods that you have in your background? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for video! How about video quality and detail 4k25/30p vs 4k30/60p? Are there any differences? And what are bitrates for recording 4k videos? I would be honoured if you answer! 🙏
So good to see this channel grow
Thanks so much. I am so glad that you get to be part of the journey.
Good stuff ! I have a question regarding FX30 : if i shoot video, in any mode - meaning in any Picture Profile, S-Log3, or any Creative Profile - I always (always) wanna stick to ISO 800 / 2,500 ? Thank you
hi there...I have an a6400 and I think the FX30 would be better to use-maybe the pic quality will be a bit better I hope...question...does the FX30 have a dedicated button for white balance so I can set my wb by just pointing at a white card and pressing a button? the way I do with my older Canon C100 mk2? and also if I connect an external LCD to the FX30 via HDMI can I see video on both screens-the external monitor (Not recorder like a Ninja V) and the camera's LCD at the same time? with my a6400 and a7iii, when I press record in 4k the camera's LCD goes to black but keeps data info on the screen- I wish both screens continued to show video. Maybe too much to ask for a little camera. Is the FX 30 capable of this? thanks
Definitely leaning towards the FX30 now over the A7iv, knowing that 4k60 is cropped on the A7iv to super35. I have an A7iii and i plan on keeping it as well so I am still covered if I need better photos. Great comparison video, really enjoyed the narrative as well.
Good call, yes, it seems like if your more into filmmaking then I would go with the fx30.
@@thefilmalliance the A7iv 4k 60 crop is the same as the Fx30 in 4k 60 because its already 1.5 crop so I think there no real advantage or disadvantage between the two cameras there. If you need 4K 60 full frame move up to A7Siii
I have the a7iii too
Great video. The main reason to get the FX30 is the cinema workflows. Cine EI, LUTs, rigging and external recording

I'm about to buy a camera and it's exactly what I said at the beginning of the video, I can't go wrong with the choice. My doubt is not between fx30 x a7iv but between a7s3 x a7iv. Which would you recommend? I do events, weddings, travel videos.
Hi,,good video,,i just want a camera for photography,,,i am in between two that cameras,,,what do you think about the mecanical shutter vs electronic shutter( fx30) , i readed some issues with last, and no focus mapping option in fx30...and same issues with overheating with a7iv, thanks
Thanks! I was debating which one to use!
Great, glad that it helped. Which one did you decide to go with?
I use both cameras. A7 IV for stills and the FX30 for video. Nice weekend.
That’s the perfect match up. Do you shoot Slog3? Do colors match?
Same here!

Hey,
if I'm a youtuber and i make cinematic videos and rarely click any photos, should i go with the fx30?
although i have sonya6400 which i can use for photos if i ever feel like doing photography....
Would you go with the FX30 or A7IV for shooting wildlife and bird videos using the Sony 200-600mm? Or one of those 2 cameras with the new Sigma 60-600? Thanks!
Well, what exactly would the conditions be like?
I own both end of the day being a dual threat in the sports world is everything I think having both is important only because again if I know I’m going to be required to take shots and videos A74 all day but if I’m hired just for a video then fx30! All day
I can see the hard work you put into the video, amazing. I picked Ip the fx30, it’s pretty good.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it. Is your Fx30 backordered? I know that they were backordered for a long time.
@@thefilmalliance I preordered before release date, got it a few days after, so i've had it for a while now. I imagine a lot of people started buying the camera once it got media attention, likely cased a shortage. I'm in Canada, not sure if that made a difference.
@@CHECKTHISOUT-CANADAhow has the fx30 worked out for you? I'm looking to getting into sports filming, live action to playback for team video sessions, maybe some close up work if the action is good and I'm not filming the whole action. Curious how you like it and how you use it. Thanks!
Fantastic production quality here. Very thorough as well, just missing a low light comparison since that's the biggest factor for me when deciding between these two cameras (I often shoot events/clubs/parties and other extreme low light settings where I'm often at ISO 6400 and above)
Would you like a vid on low light comparison? I can def look into and maybe fit it into the schedule.
@@thefilmalliance absolutely. I think it's very relevant between the two cameras; you need good low light to even think about shooting at 4k/120, and if the FX30 suffers in that area it defeats the purpose of having it, for me.

I'm looking for a B cam to compliment my a7s3 - mainly for second angle in interviews and to deliver higher quality stills. I honestly think the a74 is the perfect solution for me.
May I ask what you are shooting? Vlogging? Client work? Short narrative films?
@@thefilmalliance A mix really- client work and youtube for fun. Smaller clients seem to choose someone who can offer stills as well as video. I need a B cam anyway- think the A74 gives me more options.

I was sure I wanted the FX30 for RUclips. Now I'm not so sure since you recommended the A7IV 😅 I have a couple of years until I need to upgrade anyway (still trying to get the most out of my ZV-1) so hopefully by then I will have a better idea on what's best for me!

@@thefilmalliance vlogger is a big word but yes kind of , just trying to get better footage, b roll also, this year planning on moto camping so plenty of tripod footage. TIA.
Nice comparison, coach! I think I would go for the FX 30 not just because of the price, but because I want to get into cinematography someday, and I believe the FX 30 would be a great starting point!

i like to use the crane m3 with the a7siii+sigma 28-70 f2.8 for an ultra lightweight wedding gimbal setup. however this combo is at the limite of the m3.
from looking at the fx30, the body seems thicker than a7iv/a7siii due to the addition of the fan. so my question is, what do u think the limit of fx30 is in terms of lens combo when using the crane m3?
I don’t know because the crane m3 is smaller. If you have the a7siii and sigma lens on there I think you should be fine
its too heavy for the gimbal!
Good job ! Just got my FX30 to add to my studio. Love my A7iv and Siii but there's just something about using the FX30 that feels more "cinematic". Yup, pretty corny but oh well all in the fun of using cameras. Enjoy the channel.

You make such a good video of explaining and really detailed with calmness. Can you compare Fuji GFX 100s and Sony Alpha 7 RV? I am looking to buy one of this camera, and i do lot of videos and photos, but, price tag is also decisive too. Especially when come to buy a proper lens. In some regards Fuji is above Sony, and in some other Sony in unbeatable.
Thanks, what’s a Sony RV?
@@thefilmalliance Sony Alpha 7RV , i wrote it too short.
Oh ok, yes thats a great idea.
Sensor size is always king. Sure the A7iv has a 1.5 crop in 4k60 but then again, the FX30 with lens crop, ibis crop, lens breathing comp crop, 4k crop is left with how much sensor size?
7 months after, there are more fx30 for sale than a fx3..
I've noticed that too for some fx30s on sale aftermarket. Curious about picking one up as mainly I want a vid cam, but with the full frame a7iv being as it is might be better to get that since u could still use apsc lenses. More options seems here with Sony vs others I've noticed
Great video. Slight comment is that you don’t multiply the aperture by 1.5 as said because that suggests less light. You multiply the effect in depth of field b by1.5. One of the major benefits of an APSC (super 35) sensor and subsequent lenses is that you get greater depth of field while maintaining the amount of light coming in. This means good low light yet more in focus. More keepers. Really loved the comparison and video though. Subscribed
Hey Andrew, thank you so much for the pointer. I really appreciate it, and I love getting feedback from people that know what they are talking about.
lol You said when you shoot in 4k60 on the fx30 you don’t have to deal with a crop. Yes you do. It’s a crop sensor camera. You get a crop no matter what. You have the exact same crop shooting 4k60 as you do on the a7iv and then you have an insane 3x crop in 4k120

Hahaha, thank you:)
Recording in 4K DCI helps with rolling shutter. FX30 works better with the A7 IV than the FX3 does in terms of sharpness. For this reason the FX6 may be a better choice when you need that rolling shutter performance, but you can always use 6K raw to get out the rolling shutter with an FX9.. What we are calling 8K is not 8K. 1K is 1000, but it could be binary value 1024, but it's in 16:9 aspect ratio so 1K is 1080 because both 1920 and 1080 are perfect numbers that divide by the perfect number 12. Thus 1K is 1920*1080, or 2MP. This means that when you put together four 1080p to get one 4K, and to do this process again you have to take four 4K monitors together, which is 16 1k monitors or 16K, not 8K. 8K is as similar ration to what 2K/1440p is to 1080p, 8K is 3K height. At that megapixel count you get diminishing returns.

Check your footage again? a74 looked shaky as hand held! Might of been an oversight!!! Also Fx30 has it's baked in luts advantages meaning us film-makers bored with the same old same film looks, from all the other manufacturers can now match up cheap vintage primes, with it!!! Cheers much 👍
I own a Nikon D850 for photography so i’m not worried about photos as that’s one of the best in industry atm, but i have an XT4 for video and if i want too photos and it performs very well so i’m covered on hybrid shooting, now i’m looking into mainly a cinema camera, i was gonna get a74 but then i heard about fx30 being one of the best cinema cameras at the rate, and i’m stuck. i make car reels like you see on ig, i record vlogs and record concerts, will the fx30 be a good first cinema camera or should i pay the extra price and get the A74 or Fx3.
Well, do you like making the car reels cinematic?
A f 2.0 is a f2.0 no matter if ff or apc. The only thing you have to multiply is the depth of field. You should know better
Thanks!!
Glad that it helped you. I also appreciate you taking the time to comment and let me know
@@thefilmalliance Yup, my FX30 was delivered today! Setting it up right now.
i'm only half way though and it's obvious which one you prefer
Hahaha, whats your guess?
@@thefilmalliance A7IV for sure ha
Yes, I do. Because its full frame. Nice guess.
please do one for the a7rv
Yes, a lot of people keep asking me for that. I will look into it. Thank you for the suggestion. Would you want a comparison vid?
@@thefilmalliance yes please that would be so cool !
On paper the A7IV is the right choice but I am not sure you can resist buying the FX30 if you can in anyway afford it. The only reason I can’t think for not buying the FX30 is that you already have 2 of them. 😂
