Unbelievable clarity and production quality in this video mate. I really appreciate all the little details you bake in, down to the little progress bar at the bottom of the screen.
I use FX30 for the family video. The FX30 camera brings me all the possibilities of professional cameras (even those that I don't use yet). Buying more expensive lenses brought the question of whether it was better to buy the FX3, but at the time of purchase there were many reasons for the FX30: better display, breathing compensation, greater variety of lenses. There may be some noise in dark shots, but it's subtle and can often be removed with software if we strive to do so. I've been shooting for 25 years, I've changed several cameras. The latter cameras in optimal lighting conditions give similar results, but in difficult lighting conditions (it's not just that there's not enough light) the FX30 far surpasses anything I have had so far. I'm glad for my choice.
Amazing and interesting video Sjoerd, I’ve learned a lot through this video :) And as a sound recordist I must say: your audio is outstanding good! Keep up the good work 💥

Thanks for the review, very informative. I have a question unrelated to the technical side if I may. Do you need a permit to film in Mentawai. Also I would like to know - carrying that many equipment, do you have any problem with the customs in Singapore or in Indonesia? Thanks.
No permit necessary as far as I know. Also traveling with this camera doesn't ring any alarm bells because its so small. No issues whatsoever at customs therefore.
I own an A7iii and Sigma 35 1.4 used on MC11 . I was keen on doing video in the camera by buying some lenses for the full frame , however, the autofocus sound from the lens and the lack of 4k 60p is thinking me to upgrade. Would it be a wise choice to go for FX30 considering its price point ? I am a hobbyist shooting videos of my kid, documentaries and travel films.
Wait can you not use a flash on this camera? I was looking to upgrade from an A7II. Primary focus is still photos in-studio but I’d like to experiment with video a lot more as well.
Thank you very much for the video friend, I am also debating between the Sony a6700 and the Sony Fx30 and that is my dilemma, currently my forte is portrait photography with a cinematographic style, about 2 years ago I started with audiovisuals, focused on cinema, Well, I want to make some short films and documentaries, but without leaving my photography behind. What would you recommend?
@@SjoerdWess Footage looks incredible, though most of it is the person filming. =) Great job. Definitely looks like a great second camera to pair with A7 IV.
Excellent review which answered a few questions I had. I have just retired and swan around SE Asia taking travel and bird photos as a hobby. My current kit is a Sony A9 and an A7RIV but I am finding this a frustrating combo and am considering upgrading to a A1 & a FX30. I would most use the FX30 for birds at 120 fps but I am concerned that my 200-600mm will be too slow for Indonesian forest and too much zoom. Interested to hear how you liked the 70-200mm or if I should consider a 135mm F1.8 as a low light option. I currently use a monopod to keep weight down. I am in Bali at the moment and heading off to Sorong again tomorrow. Cheers
Mark! Thanks for the comment. What a good place to be retired in! Good for you🙏🏼. I think the FX30 could do a lot of good, but yep, I think its a bit too much zoom. I liked the 70/200 mark 2 and the extender a lot. Neat little package. However, if lowlight is a concern, checking out the FX3 might be a good idea too. That one outperforms any camera when it comes to low light.
Did you mention NDs? I was wondering what kind of solution you had there, because 25fps definitely needs it. In some BTS clips it looks like you might have a double polarizer VND?
Amazing man! About get a FX3 thanks in part to your work. May I ask what Codec you shoot in? Always XAVC-S-I? Worth the size for non-broadcast work? Researching this is driving me nuts.
Hey man, Congratz on the camera! Amazing choice! I allllways shoot in highest datarate. Just a standard I set for myself. Data is scalable. I just like to future proof my footage ;-)
I believe it was the mention of the lens extender @ 11:07. The 1.5 crop sensor, with the 70-200 GM lens on a x1.4 extender works out to my math a little different. 147mm- 420mm lens range. Maybe I'm wrong.
@@SjoerdWess would you suggest the same out of those 2 cameras if it wasn’t for travel videos but more actual music video production ? I feel Sony has a very digital sharp look compared to BMPCC 6K G2 ? having choice of filming in BRAW or pro res let me know if you still suggest FX30
If you do music videos or stuff that is more controlled with a car close by or something, definitely use the pocket. The image is more dynamic and pretty out of the box! Yet, you need more ‘stuff’ to work with it. Say vlocks or rigging etc.
Hello sir , quick question about Sony fx30 - do I need to use a CFexpress type A card to be able to shoot at 4K 120 fps or a v60 or a V90 would work? Thanks much in advance !
Footage looks amazing! Curious to know your thoughts on its video quality compared to the BMPCC6K Pro? I'm intrigued by this camera due to the substantially smaller form factor than my BMPCC6K Pro.
Hi Sjoerd, do you think the FX30 is usable for occasional, non-high-end photography (blog/social, video thumbnails, stock images, personal family portraits)? I know this is a cine focused camera with only single shooting drive mode (without continuous) for stills but I was hoping the quality might be comparative to A7S III photos. I'm not a photographer so I'm not sure about only single shooting and whether that's a deal breaker, but if I can save $1,700 to not go up to the A7S III then it might be worth it. Thanks for the video!
@@Chris-ey7zy On the Sony specs it shows a flash sync with the multi interface shoe and speed of 250/s. Is that not the flash sync you're referring to?
Hi,,good video,,,what do you think about the mecanical shutter vs electronic shutter( fx30) , i readed some issues with last, and no focus mapping option in fx30? thanks
I dont even know what focus mapping is, haha. Im a simple man. I need no fancy features. This camera works great, and the image is stunning. All that matters to me

I understand there is also a USB-C output as well. It doesn't mater for me if I get it through HDMI or USB-C but I need 4K60. Thanks :)
Well done and well explained, it is a great entry level “cinema”camera if you dont mind the base iso, price is soooo “cheap” so yeah…great camera overall :D now we wait for next FX4 :)

Your trip sounds a lot like mine going to Borakai (PH) ahah. We arrived in the middle of the monsoon, it was fun (and rainy). This sounds like a great cam, my only issue might be the possible horrible Sony UI. Coming from Blackmagic makes it very hard to go back to the Sony or Canon nonsenses. Form factor makes it tempting but everytime I have PTSDs haha
Finally a balanced review from an actual pro filmmaker! Found out a couple new things such as the improved screen resolution & RAW HDMI out. Nice. One obvious improvement over the FX3/FX6 you didn't mention I think is the 4K oversampled from 6K. Did you notice an increase in sharpness/detail? The final film is absolutely stunning and really sells the image quality of which I admit I had serious doubts when watching other footage. Most were using cheap kit APS-C glass. Those GM lenses sure are next-level!
what do you think about davinci resolve it is good for video editing? because I saw many reviews on the App Store and they are bad davinci resolve has bad reputation on the app store
2:42 I need clarification about the lack of "uncompressed RAW" photos on the FX30. The specs from Sony show that still images formats are "JPEG (DCF Ver. 2.0, Exif Ver. 2.32, MPF Baseline compliant), HEIF (MPEG-A MIAF compliant), RAW (Sony ARW 4.0 format compliant)".... Am I missing something? RAW is listed in the specs and in the user manual.
Compressed RAW is what is listed there. Uncompressed is what the a7r4 can do. But its not a big deal unless you’re shooting for billboards and want max control
@@SjoerdWess Aww.... I've been out of the camera market for A LONG TIME haha. I've managed to get every cent of value from my Sony - A700 haha. Mostly do static, table top studio work but want to update and have been eyeing the FX30. I know it is video centered but I'm wanting to explore video while keeping my ability to do stills. The lack of a mechanical shutter was a concern but I don't really do action photography as I lean more towards longer exposures, so that is really a non-issue. I appreciate the clarification. Didn't realize Sony ARW was compressed lol.
Hey Sjoerd, thank you another of your all time great behind the scenes + commentary regarding the entire shoot process, your thoughts and how you executed certain things. Your content is very much appreciated! It's simply delightful to listen to you because there is always a takeaway from your words of wisdom! Really stoked on the FX30. However, I would love to see a video or a written down process of how you handle Cine EI yourself (as your setup has been solely run and gun in Indonesia you either trusted the LUT completely on the camera screen - what you see is what you get regarding overexposing (rec709 or did you upload your own creative LUT for monitoring?) or must have used zebras as an addition (is that even possible in Cine EI?)). Also regarding post processing of the log files. Do you use the Sony Catalyst software? I could not find any way that makes DaVinci Resolve able to read metadata from the log files to automatically apply the exposure compensation you dialed in when shooting.
Stefan! I wrote down the idea for this video and will definitely get into this! I used Catalyst for stabilising a couple times. Unfortunately, you have to use the standalone version as it doesnt support Resolve... You can definitely use Zebras in CineEI :-)

I used a Nisi Swift System ND!

@Sjoerd Wess, Sjoerd, Please ask Sony whether the RAW output of 4672 x 2628 is downsampled from 6k or it is just a crop from the 6k sensor. Thanks.
I forwarded it to Sony. Ill get back to it as soon as I get a reply on the mail.
Just started watching the video and noticed snorkeling footage. How does the FX30 hold up while snorkeling? I believe the FX3 can do a better job.
I thought it was amazing! Fx3 is a different sensor, more powerful imo
Amazing man! About get a FX3 thanks in part to your work. May I ask what Codec you shoot in? Always XAVC-S-I? Worth the size for non-broadcast work? Researching this is driving me nuts.
Hey man,
Congratz on the camera! Amazing choice! I allllways shoot in highest datarate. Just a standard I set for myself. Data is scalable.
I just like to future proof my footage ;-)
Great video! Thanks! Are you able to provide a link to a 200-600mm lens you recommend for this camera? Also, any tripod recommendations? Thanks again!
I havent used a 200/600 lens. So I wouldn’t know. Tripod would be a sachtler ace, manfrotto or other tripod with good quality videhead
@@SjoerdWess okay, thanks again!
I believe it was the mention of the lens extender @ 11:07. The 1.5 crop sensor, with the 70-200 GM lens on a x1.4 extender works out to my math a little different. 147mm- 420mm lens range. Maybe I'm wrong.
What was the lens you use in this video?
Love the story and review ❤
Thanks a lot!
love the video and the colour how you make it
Thanks a lot man!
Hi there! I’m in the verge between the pocket 6k g2 and the fx30. I know you love the 6k. I would use it for travel videos. Which one would yo take?
Fx30. Pocket is amazing, but it requires to bring lots more equipment than you need with the Sony.
@@SjoerdWess thanks buddy. Going with the fx30
Thank you brother the best explanation for Fx30
Glad it helped
man im a fan! i wish i could work with you with future project of yours!!
Who knows in the future amigo!
I really like this video. However I found the progress bar on the bottom to be distracting.
Chris! Thanks a lot. It was kind of a tryout. I'm definitely leaving it out next time. Takes too much time too to make, haha
If you could only pick 2 lenses to take on a family vacation, which would you choose for the FX30?
I think the Tamron 17/70 2.8 is super versatile!
Hello sir , quick question about Sony fx30 - do I need to use a CFexpress type A card to be able to shoot at 4K 120 fps or a v60 or a V90 would work? Thanks much in advance !
V90 will work!
Footage looks amazing! Curious to know your thoughts on its video quality compared to the BMPCC6K Pro? I'm intrigued by this camera due to the substantially smaller form factor than my BMPCC6K Pro.
I think the image out of the box is nicer on any bmd cam! But yes.. this formfactor + batterylife is amazing to have for some situations
Can you make a video on Timelapse with FX30
Yes
Hi Sjoerd, do you think the FX30 is usable for occasional, non-high-end photography (blog/social, video thumbnails, stock images, personal family portraits)?
I know this is a cine focused camera with only single shooting drive mode (without continuous) for stills but I was hoping the quality might be comparative to A7S III photos.
I'm not a photographer so I'm not sure about only single shooting and whether that's a deal breaker, but if I can save $1,700 to not go up to the A7S III then it might be worth it.
Thanks for the video!
Oh it can definitely do that. Perfectly fine too actually!
No flash sych
@@Chris-ey7zy On the Sony specs it shows a flash sync with the multi interface shoe and speed of 250/s. Is that not the flash sync you're referring to?
@@Chris-ey7zy Yeah that's strange, I don't see it on there anymore.
All that matters to me
Lens used in the airport ? Stunning shots the colors are so crisp. I’m a beginner in videography and will look forward to buy this. God’s will.
Hi there! That was the 16/35 gm sony!
Hi, can you share which underwatercase you use?
Salty Surfhousings
Thank you for this video! Question: Is it possible to have 4K60fps video output ? I need this for a streaming project and I already have a capture card to get the 4K60 stream in HDMI. I understand there is also a USB-C output as well. It doesn't mater for me if I get it through HDMI or USB-C but I need 4K60. Thanks :)
Anthony! I am not sure if you get 60frames out of they HMDI or UsbC. I will check!
@@SjoerdWess If you can give me that answer when you have it, that would be great ! Thanks :)
I have the a7iv but looking for a b cam along side the a7iv for interviews. What camera would you recommend ? I was looking towards the fx30
I can definitely recommend it for that purpose for sure
Well done and well explained, it is a great entry level “cinema”camera if you dont mind the base iso, price is soooo “cheap” so yeah…great camera overall :D now we wait for next FX4 :)
Hahah thanks buddy! And yep.. curious what will be next!
If you also want to do some photo is it good enough or better off with a7iv ?
Its different as its super35. So better compare it to a6600 or something
I've got 2500 to spend .. fx30 new .. a7iv used $2200 .. sony a7siii used 2500 .. im big on image quality .. im a s1h lumix user of 10 years.. ready to try auto focus etc .. what are you picking ??
Depends. FX30 sure is a great cam. But if you’re fullframe fan, you should consider addind some budgrt
Great review and a great camera. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 😊
Danke schon! Ich hoffe das diese video geholfen hat (my best German, haha)
@@SjoerdWess sehr gut 😀👌🏼
Which underwater housing are you using?
Salty surfhousings!
Loving your work by the way. Well made and very high quality to say the least! Glad to have found your channel.
Thanks a lot! Welcome to the party :-)
Did you get a chance to try the 100/120fps in 1080p on the FX30? If so, how is the quality ? Is there a crop there too? Thanks :)
I havent tried it nope. Only in 4k!
Sir, is Stabilization works in Fullframe lenses
It does!
Hahaha. I feel you. I must say, the UI is ok. Until you want to enable grid lines or some shit... That is hidden DEEP. Haha
Is this camera suitable for shooting weddings, does it mean unlimited time and is there a problem that it is not full frame. Thank you
Its definitely suitable! And nope, no recording limit :-)
Thanks a lot. Huge compliment! I forgot to mention the oversampling... Stupid! You're right on that! And yep, the GM are killer!
Great work! 🔥
Thanks Demid!
Hey, do you mind sharing what underwater housing is that you are using?
This is the Salty Surf housing for the fx3!
@@SjoerdWess Thank you my friend!
Hi what did you use for the underwater housing of fx30?
Salty Surfhousing for FX3
I'm just glad they sell this without that flimsy top handle! Can't wait to get my hands on it :)
I agree man!
@@SjoerdWess Do you recommend saving the $ and not buying the handle?
I like the handle tbh! Great audio and ergonomic
Do you think coming from the canon R6 would be a downgrade to the fx30 for video?
Not really. R6 also shoots in 10 bit, has beautiful Clog and amazing Dynamic Range.
Do you use the memory save slots to save settings? How are you supposed to set a custom white balance?
Yes, I use it that way. You can set custom wb by going into menu - whitebalance - scroll down to where you see the K.
@@SjoerdWess but can you balance off a grey card? At the same time as using your saved camera settings? I have it greyed out.
I wouldnt know man. Never tried it
@@SjoerdWess it is disabled. No good reason at all. Just a mega bug in the firmware. Hopeless. Makes the
Memory feature useless
Sorry to hear that. Never really have an issue with that custom wb thingy. Always manually put it in
what do you think about davinci resolve it is good for video editing? because I saw many reviews on the App Store and they are bad davinci resolve has bad reputation on the app store
Its the best for video editing! App store is not the place to check for feedback on professional software.
@@SjoerdWess thank you
2:42 I need clarification about the lack of "uncompressed RAW" photos on the FX30.
Cheers man! If video is a new thing for you, the fx30 is agreat model to use! Good luck!
Hey Sjoerd,
thank you another of your all time great behind the scenes + commentary regarding the entire shoot process, your thoughts and how you executed certain things.
@@SjoerdWess Looking forward to it =)
Bought it, didn't like the APS-C... sent it back and bought a another A7IV for my 2nd shooter.
Also a great camera!
