for someone who owns the a6500, i feel like this is the best upgrade for me. i’ve been wanting to upgrade for a while to full frame but this kinda took all of my attention away, becuase it provides me an opportunity to upgrade my camera & still keep my lenses that i use for my a6500
@@ciudadanosdelcosmos fx 30 can take pretty good pictures. But if you do photography and spend more time taking pictures than filming video you should get the A74 FX30 is cinema line it's for videographers.
The A7IV overheats FOR SURE when filming at 4k60p for extended periods even in cool temps, or in the summer heat after a short period of time. And yes, even with the mandatory "High Temp" setting turned on in the settings. This is the sole reason we're immediately selling our 3 A7IV cameras and have purchased 3 replacement FX30 cameras. In about 30 weddings this year, we've had at least one of our 3 cameras overheat and stop 4 different times (even in cool rooms) and at least one camera flash the overheating warning maybe 15 or so times over the year. Otherwise, it's a great camera. Our A7siii has never overheated when filming at 4k60 and I trust the FX30 won't either.
@@Panther-no not really. Cameras don’t vary enough due to manufacturing process to have such a degree of difference that one specific model would vary so much. This would literally go against manufacturing process and would lead to high fail rates. Every a7r4 have roughly the same temperature tolerance and to think that one would be much more or much less superior than the reference is absurd.
@@henrytep8884 well they release cameras in batches, this happens all the time with tech products, what planet are you living on..if a product is released and it has slight inconsistencies, the future releases of those products generally get sorted out...and why are you talking about the a7r4 am talking about the a7iv and so is this video.
@@henrytep8884 There are definitely bad batches and Sony simply didn't care, it's that simple. There are plenty of people such as myself who are shooting 1-hour+ interviews with no problem at all, others who have overheating problems just by scrolling the menu options for a couple of minutes. So either people are lying, some of the settings in the camera are bugged causing overheating issues or some batches are simply defective.
As an A74 & A1 owner (video use 100%) it’s hard to believe that I am so excited about the prospect of receiving this humble APSC camera next month! Why not FX3? True utility and versatility on the road requires lighter lenses, USB streaming, focus breathing comp, focus mapping and 6K downsampling! Sony should develop an 8K APSC FX video shooter for under $9K with GM fast lenses and higher dynamic range.
Kinda frustrating that you can't record in 6k. I wouldn't use that most of the time, but if I wanted to be able to crop bigtime, track an object, or use a color picker, the 6k footage not downsampled would work much much better. Using the GH6 in 5.7k all those mentioned above ( also green screen is much easier to get a good pick) work without fuss compared to the internally downsampled footage. I do agree that this camera is perfect for the majority of content creators, but hopefully it improves a lot with firmware updates. Could be even better!
For years I used APS-C and always dreamed of having a full-frame camera. My first full frame was the A7III and now I have the A7IV. I have purchased a small collection of full-frame lenses so my use case is not leading me towards the Fx30. If anything it would be the FX3, as I am sold on full frame and the sony super 35 mode gives me that extra punch that I got from APS-C. As stated earlier when I had APS-C I dreamed of a full-frame body. I don't find myself dreaming of APS-C at all.
@@switchunboxing To be honest it was my use case. Before Sony I had a Caon 7D mark III and the first lens I purchased for it was the Canon 24-105. That was a full-frame lens and at the time I was shooting my kids sports. The 1.6 crop factor was great for the extra reach. So as time went on I purchased a few more lenses which were all full frame based on the amount of FF available vs APS-C. When I switched to Sony I was able to still use all of those Canon lenses using the Sigma mc-11 adapter. The added bonus was that Sony FF now made all my old Canon glass wider, plus the added bonus of the super35 mode of extra reach.
I’ve been debating between the A7iii & A7iv. I like the menus of the IV and flip screen but I’m seeing lots of overheating issues. Have you had any trouble with yours?
@@project_poor_runnerthe A7IV runs hot with video, there's just no way around it. I don't record for long sessions so it's not an issue but I do have a fx3 which gets 99% of game time when I'm shooting.
@@markthecre8tor I’m looking to replace my IPhone 14 Pro Max with a mirrorless for car/overland & portrait photography and video and looking at the 24-105 mm G lense. Which one would you pick the A7iii, A7IV or FX3? Thanks for your help.
I am a Sony APSC camera user for work, because the price rate here is quite low for photo and video work (at least for my city area), so it is very difficult for me to use a fullframe camera, realistically, the payback will be very long if I invest in a fullframe camera and the lenses😂. This FX30 might be a good step for me with features that are futureproof and can be used for a very long time before needing to upgrade the camera again, and of course without having to spend more on lenses. Thank you for the good review and field testing, it really helped me in making decisions. I'm currently using the a6000 and a6400, and plan to trade my a6000 for the FX30, so the a6400 for photos, and the FX30 for video I think it can meet all my needs.🤔
5 months later after watching your video, I bought the A7IV for $2000 open box instead of the FX30. The results in low light is surprisingly good when compare to the FX30.
the biggest confusion is full-frame is a more secure and future proof investment and specially the low light is a big difference for video people and FX30 still have the dancing pixels in the shadows!
One important point you've looked over is that the A7IV has a S35 crop mode. And in that mode, the rolling shutter is actually slightly better than the FX30. So overall that tips the hat in A7IV's favour as it can do FF with better low-light (albeit with poor RS) and you can switch it to S35 if you want extra reach and low RS. Best of both worlds. And its also a good hybrid cam with strong photo capabilities. I don't understand the hype around the FX30 honestly: no EVF, no mechanical shutter, non stacked APS-C sensor. I don't even see a detail increase in between it and the non oversample 4K from the A7S3/FX3/FX6 sensor. I'm not an A7IV user by the way but I honestly think that the A7IV is better value when compared to the FX30. Compared to the FX3 though, FX30 wins hands down in the value department.
Good points about the A7iv’s crop mode. I’ve sometimes shot in that mode for the simple reason that I have an APSC zoom (the 18 105 for my crop sensor bodies, but am loathe to buy a ff zoom for several reasons: cost, weight, and little need for that category of lens on a regular basis. So I’ve shot sometimes with that lens on a ff body and was pleased with the results - only realizing later that the footage was also devoid of rolling shutter. It’s an economical yet practical workaround.
“Cinema Line”, “Netflix Approved”, “Timecode”, “4K120p”, “Tally Lights”. Cinema Line is a just branding. We must admit that we don’t really film for Netflix or even about submitting to Netflix. Timecode feature is cool but again, we don’t really shoot for Netflix and if you need to sync, do it manually as its easy. Most of us don’t shoot 4K in 120 all the time. The tally light situation can be solved by being attentive to details and checking the back of the camera to know you are rolling. Will I buy it? Nope. I have the A7S3 and A74 and getting the FX30 is a downgrade in my opinion.
If you have the fx3 sony a7siii or a7iv and still wanting the fx30, chances are 90% of us don't even use the cameras to even 50% of their potential. And we are suffering from severe GAS and FOMO (gear acquisition syndrome. Fear of missing out)
Yes and no. In theory, hybrid shooting shooting sounds great, but for some of us, it’s difficult to keep switching settings from photo to video. I recognize you can set them independently on the Sony, but I’m finding it’s just easier to have one set up for stills and the other for video.
@@RandumbTech Bro.. I'm using a smartphone right now.. I always change from photo to video mode everyday.. It's a MINIMAL issue that I wouldn't even consider when buying a point-and-shoot, lol..
The FX30 is super impressive, but I'm gonna stick with my A7IV. All of it's issues are manageable, but I love the ability to crop in using APS-C mode plus clear image zoom. Definitely would like for the rolling shutter performance to be better, but the video I get from it is still incredible. Also, if I want a good set of light lenses to take with my full frame camera, I'll get the coming soon Tamron 20-40mm and the Tamron 28-75mm. Great options for traveling full frame.
The new 20-40mm Tamron has all but pushed me into buying a A74. Im currently a Nikon DSLR shooter (yes even in video 😆) that lens pretty much covers all my lenses except my 50mm - but I reckon with cropping or clear image zoom I can get round that 10mm.
A7 IV's rolling shutter in APS-C is not that different from FX30. I feel like people should be comparing A7 IV in APS-C w/ FX30 in APS-C because to me, A7 IV is a great video shooter if you think of it as an amazing Super 35 shooter that also can shoot great full frame video on a tripod.
@@mbvglider 100%. Honestly, I wouldn't be swapping out my camera for the FX30. Only thing I miss is the 4K 120fps. But if you're willing to cough up $200 bucks for Topaz Labs video enhancer, you can get that sorted as well.
Is fx30 a good choice for wildlife videography? As wildlife requires panning too much for moving target. But 4k 120p is a cherry on the top for wildlife videography, specially fast moving birds or animals. And with the crop factor it can give a great advantage for 200-600 lens.
I’ve watched all your videos thus far since release date along with 20 plus other videos. I pre ordered mine the first day and beyond excited and no regrets. I shoot real estate, gym promos, weddings, interviews etc all in one for my small business Diesel Media Productions. You have been a very large help with getting the right information I needed. Especially when it came to selling my A7iii to upgrade to the IV. I am hybrid and have only needed one camera. However as I am getting busier, more requests. I am in need of a second camera for video purposes. I personally utilize the crop mode in 4K 60 a lot. Especially using my 14-24 2.8 sigma that I mainly bought for real estate. I use it a lot now for quick reels and cropping in gives me a good range in the areas I needed it. Looking forward to adding the FX30, I am far from worried about the crops, as if you have right lenses and it’s a 2nd camera you should be perfectly fine. I believe you can only complain if you’re trying to have the exact same framing/ depth of feild in two shots but I believe the purpose is to have two different looks when doing that. So I don’t see why all these people been complaining about it. I can’t wait to use mine and now looking for next lens to add. Just figuring out do I get a prime or a zoom 😅
I’m torn between these two, I am a photographer first but I already have the a7riv for that. Fx30 would give me a better video camera but lacking on the stills side the a7iv will give me a solid combo of both.
Having a second hybrid body is a good idea. You can always put tele on one and wide on the other. A7 IV is a great hybrid body and is more ergonomic than any other Sony because of the improved dial layout.
7:15 Disagree. Full frame lenses are not necessarily heavier or more expensive than apsc, and in some cases, cheaper if you account for crop factor and third-party support. You can get something as cheap as Samyang 18 2.8 (145g / $300 for 12 f/1.8 in apsc) or 16-35 f/4 (380g / $1200 for 10-24 f/2.8 in apsc).
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Not a lot more expensive like you mentioned. Even if you spend a bit more, you get more in return than the price difference. At least that's the current market.
One more plus for the A7IV is it has variable shutter, which means you can eliminate flicker from LED lights and projectors. This feature is indispensable when shooting video at an unknown location. Sometimes you can reduce flicker by setting shutter to 1/50 or 1/60, depending on which country you live in, but sometimes you need micro control over shutter in order to fully eliminate it. The FX6, A7IV and A1 have variable shutter. The FX3, FX30 and A7sIII do not. I was doing a 3 camera shoot a few days ago with my FX6, A7IV and A7sIII, when during a test rehearsal I noticed the stage lighting was flickering really badly. I was able to micro adjust the shutter on the FX6 and A7IV to eliminate it, but not on the A7sIII. I ran out and bought another A7IV to save the shoot. A7sIII has now been demoted to my D cam.
@@flaviotaneli9138 Really? For video? Variable Shutter is different from Anti-Flicker which is exclusive to Photo mode. Can you confirm that it is possible to set the shutter on the FX-30 or A7sIII to say, 50.2 or 50.7, for example?
@@mediakobo I've seen so many videos on the FX30 for the past days that I won't be able to tell you which but I'm 100% positive I've seen 49.8 or 50.2 fps in one of them !
I've been shooting home video for twenty years on various cameras (now a good collection). The FX30 is what I've been looking for for a long time. I will miss the viewfinder and ND filters. But I guess I'll go with it, since Sony obviously has no plans for an AX-800. A lot of people deal with depth of field, but for home video it's good to see the background as well. And for special cases when I really want to separate the foreground from the background, sony has its glasses.
I already bought the FX30. It's a very good camera and I'm learning how to use it and how to set it up. I bought Sony E PZ 10-20 mm f/4 G (great) and Tamron AF 17-70 mm f/2.8 (I'm not entirely sure). I think about the ND filters. I am still learning. It is different than with cameras like AX100 or AX700. I'm also considering the Sony E 15 mm f/1.4 G for filming at home or in places with very poor lighting.
Great videos man. Always giving content on what I'm thinking about with considerations to switching to a Sony setup. Personally going to be leaning towards the A7iv since I'm a hybrid shooter, but the FX30 is very tempting for solely video shooting. I think the A7iv will suite my needs perfectly though. Thanks again for all the content. Literally the perfect videos for all of my thoughts and considerations!
In Europe, FX30 is not that good of a deal. It costs 2400 euros (body only) and the A7IV costs 2700 euros… If the prince for the FX30 in Europe would be the announced 1700 dollars I would had bought one to be my B camera… Because it costs significantly more, I just keep using my A7IV to do everything I need. When a company tries to be greedy, it loses money. Sony just lost my money.
Great video Jason. Speaking of photo capabilities, I just watched a video by Mark Galer who pointed out extracting frames from a 120p video instead of taking photos with the FX30

Price difference in the UK, mainly because the FX30 is relatively new compared to the A74 is £150 difference if I buy from Einfinity (grey importers -Ive bought from them before). So the price is prey close here. Of course the lenses are cheaper, but id probably get the Tamron 20-40, so full frame, so no savings there either 🙄
Sometimes when a camera is new, you can still use programs like Adobe Digital Negative Converter to convert your unsupported ARW files to DNG and then process the those in Lightroom. Footage looks great btw!
Great job on the video Jason! Thanks for making it. The FX30 makes me think that Sony is going to release an A7000 soon. Betting it will have the sensor from the FX30 (but without the Cine modes) put into an A7IV chassis with the new screen from the A7RV. Same retail as the FX30.
I'm invested in FF and don't really care for another body. I don't want to bring another set of lenses, or think about the x 1.5 conversion.Less I need to worry about, the better. Also, why would you compromise and pick a smaller sensor? Just get another FX3, a used A7SIII or A7IV. Bigger sensor at the same price point. TBH, I'd rather invest in lighting. If you can't carry a FX3, A7IV, or FF camera, maybe hit the gym.
For me in the UK its got to be the A74, its only £60 more expensive. Also the new Tamron 20-40mm is so exciting for me as I currently use a 20mm 24mm 35mm and 50mm, so one lens pretty much covers all these focal lengths.
I also ordered the 20-40mm. I could use that about half of the time, and the rest of the time, I can use the 35-150mm. What impresses me more than anything is that it's so frickin' small. Also, it has very high magnification ratio and is very affordable. Though nobody has tested it, Tamron's zooms have been so stellar recently that I'm fine trusting them on this one. You can always punch in with a little bit of Clear Image Zoom or crop mode to get more range out of the 20-40mm, too.
I appreciate you not raving on about the sensor size in comparison to a lot of other creators out there. Heard guys say FX30 is for a beginner filmmaker because of the sensor size by default for example and that type of bollocks lol.
Thank You for this great video. I think, sharpness and low light capabilities of the a 7 IV are more important for me than cinematic features of the fx30. Thank You. Best regards, Kai the bee filmer from Kiel (Northern Germany).
*I'm Buying this and using this instead of my a6400 because I'm more Video Focus then Picture. Price wise this is about the same as the A7C which I was going to get but now THIS....& IT'S APS-C and will use my Current Sigma Lens until I get a better lens It's a NO BRAINER for me. This camera is My One all to End all for me. Nice Review and did I mention APS-C?*
I don't know why people continue to stick with 24p, this boggles my mind lol.. Every one wants to be or mimic Cinematic Shooting, and yes the lighting and stuff looks great how ever if you notice all of them rather shoot in 4K 24P, which to me is dumb, yes they want to mimic that cinematic look, and all but the reason why major movie productions from a long time ago up until now, used 24 frames per second only because of 2 reasons, #1 knowing the movies will hit people's televisions, and #2 also they was shooting 9MM expensive film so if they shot this in 24 fps it was cheaper because they used less film... But the main reason #1 was knowing the film will be displayed on Home Televisions one day.. And back then Televisions and broadcasting that on televisions, it was not possible to use frame rates higher then 24P. But when digital came out and then people had HD tv's and then blueray cd's they still was shooting in 24P because many have not shifted over to Full Digital yet. Now they have, Example the Movie the Hobbit, was filmed on a RED weapon Camera, shot at 4K 48P then 60P for the fast camera pans, the reason for this was, #1 because the dramatic landscape scenes and the panning they did was quite fast, if they shot this in 24P they would not be able to pan the cameras and move them as fast as they did, because it would be choppy and skip.. the higher your frame rates are the faster you can pan your camera with out chunky skipping. They would have never been able to sustain the faster camera movements they did shooting at 24P or even 30P, so they shot this fully in 48P. and 60P And the film still looked great and cinematic... Most people don't realize they shot this entire movie at 48P with exception to the camera pans, they didn't visually notice this.. Any experienced cinematographer though would have know this because of the fact that the camera pans they did would no way be possible at 24p and look as smooth as it did. Here is a link to that in 4k ruclips.net/video/zw_XKWBE_ss/видео.html Even if you haven't known it, potentially every film you've ever seen has been shown at 24 FPS. This is the industry standard frame rate that dates back decades. But how did 24 FPS become standard for films? Is it really the best way to deliver a film? We're going to explore how 24 FPS came to be and what the future might hold. Early silent films did not have a consistent frame rate, generally falling between 14 and 26 FPS. That's because cameras recorded by someone literally cranking a handle. The faster they cranked, the faster the frame rate. that consistency was set at 24 FPS. It was chosen by Warner Bros. and their sound film system called Vitaphone, for their release of The Jazz Singer in 1927. Film stock is expensive. Recording at a higher frame rate costs more. As such, filmmakers needed a standard that was cheap, but also achieved that persistence of vision. 24 FPS also allowed for that fidelity between picture and sound. There's another benefit to 24 FPS. It's neatly divisible by numbers like 2, 3, and 4, which means that it can be quickly calculated how many frames go into half a second (12), a third of a second (8), and a quarter of a second (6). It makes editing easier. Some early attempts include Night of Dreams (1978) and New Magic (1983), which were both directed by Douglas Trumbull and at 60 FPS. When it comes to modern examples, the choices are of equally slim pickings. The Hobbit trilogy from Peter Jackson, starting with An Unexpected Journey in 2012, used 48 FPS. Later, director Ang Lee used 120 FPS for Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in 2016 and Gemini Man in 2019. But the fast camera pans was filmed in 60P However, only certain theaters actually showed the higher frame rate versions. As such, even if you saw these films in theaters, you may have seen the converted 24 FPS version anyway. But the filming in 60P was needed for the fast camera pans. so being downgraded from 60 p to 24 didn't bother the fast camera pans. because it was already capture.. When The Hobbit was released, many were skeptical. Writing in Rolling Stone, Peter Travers said that "the movie looks so hyper-real that you see everything that's fake about it". This is a common complaint about a higher frame rate. By applying more realistic and smoother motion, it becomes harder to suspend your disbelief. Sets look like sets, costumes like costumes. It's true that it's easier to shoot higher than 24 FPS now. In fact, your smartphone can do that and more. However, there are still costs associated with a higher frame rate. It uses more storage space, which in turn needs bigger capacity devices and more backup space. Most of all, 24 FPS remains because it's tradition. It's what films look like. That will, change with new generations of filmmakers, because the only reason for 24P is that old cinematic look, wanna be movie makers want to mimic movies but 24P is NOT what makes a good movie scene it's the color and the cinematography and acting and story and all that. There is no real reason to shoot at 24P any more, in fact tons of fast action scenes have been always shot at high frame rates, such as star wars, Charlie's Angels, the Newer moves not the tv shows, many martial art's scenes as well even in the older days Bruce Lee movies shot scenes at high frame rates because of the fact Bruce Lee's moves was too fast.. many action scenes was shot at high frame rates even in the 1980's some scenes was shot at 10,000 fps for the slow motion scenes, or else it would look bad. So Today many Move's are shot in 48 FPS to 60Fps even in the entire movie. Depending on the movie to withstand the fast action and camera pans. the titanic was shot at 48 fps, inland empire was shot at 60fps Aquarela was shot at 96fps Gemini Man was shot at 120 fps here is a list of them films that was shot in high frame rates if you don't believe me and you never noticed it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_with_high_frame_rates People need to get off the 24p it's slow it's chunky and looks like shit in my Opinion. people need to step up to today's technology and realize the 24p is not needed only needed back in the day, Shooting in 24P Does not make you closer to being a professional cinematographer or movie maker, it just doesn't.. 24p was only used because back in the stone age of filming and needed to be at that frame rate to work. Shooting today in 24 P in my opinion makes you look like a wanna be cinematographer or movie maker, it makes you look dumb.
I was going nuts trying to figure out why I was getting so many fb messenger notifications. Turns out it was just your video lol. Great content as usual man, always appreciate your insight.
This is an awesome review, thank you. If I may ask a question because I'm a bit confused about the timecode in the A7IV. I see the settings in the menu VIDEO ICON \\ TC/UB. Is this different than the timecode feature you are talking about? I've heard others saying A7IV doesn't have timecode too and I believe you. I don't have experience with this so I'm curious if the setting I mentioned is something different. I can't find info.
As a sports videographer. I am tossing up between the A7siii and the new FX30. Currently don't have the $$$ for either of them but confused as which one to get when I can upgrade. Currently using a Panasonic Camcorder that shoots 4k at 60fps.
Fab video, thanks Jason. I like that the FX30 has similar features and controls to the FX3 and it would make a great B-cam for video only two camera setups. For me though if you can only have two bodies then I prefer the a7iv because it simply does some jobs better than the FX3 so makes you more flexible. For example I use mine for anything requiring hybrid shooting or where being able to switch between full frame and S35 on the fly allows me to work quickly with a single lens. PS, love the lighting on your demo table :)
Pocket 4k and FX30 are very different cameras here. Way more versatility in the FX30 but the pocket 4k offers a nice image. Have to consider lenses and auto focus and the whole sony ecosystem
But ninja can't do 16 bit at this moment it compresses it to 12 bit. Fx30 is nice but I gave up on crop sensor cam full frame never looking back I've sold all my crop glass and invest in full frame I have a7r4A and A7lV my next addition is fx3 I'll save an get the full frame.
I realllllly wish they’d sell the FX3 without the $400 top handle. It seems like used FX3’s are just slightly less than new ones so obviously they will retain their value over time.
Jason, for me, as a twitch streamer full time and for doing vlogs, what you recomend me to buy? i was very interessed on zv-e1 but i understood that is impossible to use it as a webcam for streams, Its the a7iv the best option? i can get a a7iv NEW for just 1800€
I believe there is a huge possibility there will be a APSC pendant to the A7SIII just like the FX30 is to the FX3. Just this time the other way around: first, the video-focused camera, then the hybrid shooter... Thanks for this series of fx30 videos, Jason. Really interesting, detailed stuff :)
What was the exact lens you used for the fx30 when shooting the boxing video. I know it was a prime lens but what was the exact one. GREAT VIDEO BY THE WAY.
FX30 getting a point for because it has cheaper glass and can use APS-C glass. What about Full Frame using APS-C glass. I'm not even talking about crop mode. Many good apsc lenses can be used in full frame mode with minimal crop if at all.
The a74 is a better hybrid camera but the FX30 is the better video-focused camera. Aside from having more 4k recording options, it also has more video-focused features. Crop is an issue? I mean most a74 users argued the crops on the a74 weren't that big of a deal when it came out and so I think the same argument would apply here for the fx30. I personally think the FX30 is the best b-cam you can get for the money. Perfect for those with an a7s3/fx3
There is a sale on Sony cameras in Japan right now. I tried both the FX30, A7IV, and A7Cii. I honestly can't decide which is best. I am interested in both photography and shooting videos for RUclips/instagram. I want a camera that can shoot 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 60p and can significantly outperform my iPhone 15 pro max. I am leaning toward the A7Cii but am unsure of the video capabilities. What do you think?
What would be the best budget camera for 99% use is taking photos and RUclips Live Podcast of Reptiles that need to pick up most accurate colors that most cameras fail to pick up on live streams
I have an a7iv but I'm thinking about getting an FX30 for a secondary body for video because having to purchase another a7iv is way too much money, I have some good Full Frame glass so I don't have to invest on APS-C lenses
Absolute nutter of a camera, love what Sony did with the FX 30 very affordable and powerful camera for people who just want to do videography related work. Great video really enjoyed it looking forward to more!
Really helpful thank you. I have an A7iv and love it but I do miss the 4k 100fps for wildlife and was thinking about an A7siii to work alongside the A7iv, but maybe the FX30 would be the way to go as it fills in the bits the A7iv misses and is so much cheaper (& newer) than the A7siii & FX3.
rolling shutter test is in another video. But if I tested this, I would have to discuss the A7IV has now less MP count and is not downsampled anymore which produces a different image
Hi, big fan of your channel. I'm a hybrid shooter and already own an a7iv, but at times i would need a 2nd cam (A or B cam) for video projects. Would like o know your thoughts if it would make sense to have both cameras, but make the fx30 the A Cam for video projects, and the a7iv as the b cam?
I’m just getting into videography/cinematography coming from photographer background. Not going to use my photo camera for video so should I get the fx30 or save for the A7r5?
Somewhat random question, but are there differences in how well these cameras would work with green screens? Right now I am using my old a6500 for green screen work, and I've tested the a6000 vs a6500 and the a6500 does a much better job with coloring along edges of subjects compared to the a6000, which makes keying out the green much easier. I use an a7iv for all my other work, but I'm curious if getting the fx30 to replace my a6500 would be worth it or if the quality difference would be minimal.
what would you recoomend for a studio setting? I want high quality studio footage that looks profesional and having a hard time choosing between the two... I'm video-centric but feels weird to buy an aps-c camera when I can get a full frame...
Jason how does the FX30 rear screen compare to the A74 rear screen, I can see its almost twice the resolution, but is it brighter as its your only option outside.
for someone who owns the a6500, i feel like this is the best upgrade for me. i’ve been wanting to upgrade for a while to full frame but this kinda took all of my attention away, becuase it provides me an opportunity to upgrade my camera & still keep my lenses that i use for my a6500
Me too! That's the move I'm making! :) The 6500 will be my secondary and I'll keep my lenses to use with the FX30.
Late here,,but i thought the same ,but i was wrong, seeing tons of videos,,fx30 is for video,,not for photography...i will buy a7iv
@@ciudadanosdelcosmos fx 30 can take pretty good pictures. But if you do photography and spend more time taking pictures than filming video you should get the A74
FX30 is cinema line it's for videographers.
The fx 30 is the absolute pick for the video shooter, especially for less money. Hard to beat the a74 for hybrid shooters though.
absolutely

Our A7siii has never overheated when filming at 4k60 and I trust the FX30 won't either.
absolutely recommend the fx30 is you're running the camera non stop for hours
I have filmed a wedding with over 5hours of footage all in 4k and it was in summer and it never over heated, it all depends on your individual camera.
@@jessecumberledge4530 And it lacks 6K RAW so the ProRes RAW out of the FX30 is cropped to m43-ish size.
8k would be nice haha
And cut their full frame sale. Doubt
@Donna Turner can't wait for a9iii, a7Cii & a6600ii
What’s the big difference between apsc and full frame to you
@@switchunboxing To be honest it was my use case.
Any overheating till now?
the biggest confusion is full-frame is a more secure and future proof investment and specially the low light is a big difference for video people and FX30 still have the dancing pixels in the shadows!
The A7IV certainly is a great camera and so are many other full frame cameras.
Well yea if you have those two cameras why would you even think about getting an FX30? Tf
Yeah tf
Holy crap this is exactly the video I wanted to find and it was uploaded today. God bless you and the algorithm.
If you have the fx3 sony a7siii or a7iv and still wanting the fx30, chances are 90% of us don't even use the cameras to even 50% of their potential. And we are suffering from severe GAS and FOMO (gear acquisition syndrome. Fear of missing out)
this is very true
You can always use apsc lenses for video for 4K 60 on A74
do you think Tamron 20-40mm will have internal zoom just like 17-28 version?
The best content creators don't always have the best gear.
correct
FX30 is best for beginner filmmakers and content creators(cheaper body, cheaper lens). Also it’s good as a second camera(B) for professionals
Is fx30 a good choice for wildlife videography? As wildlife requires panning too much for moving target.
But 4k 120p is a cherry on the top for wildlife videography, specially fast moving birds or animals.
And with the crop factor it can give a great advantage for 200-600 lens.
massive advantage for wildlife and getting that extra reach

Just figuring out do I get a prime or a zoom 😅
great purchase. I honestly love primes because of the must faster apertures you can get. But that is my personal preference
I’m torn between these two, I am a photographer first but I already have the a7riv for that. Fx30 would give me a better video camera but lacking on the stills side the a7iv will give me a solid combo of both.
If your keeping two cameras then fx30 and if your only having one camera a7iv
Having a second hybrid body is a good idea. You can always put tele on one and wide on the other. A7 IV is a great hybrid body and is more ergonomic than any other Sony because of the improved dial layout.
Same here I do photos and video with a7iv but if I only do video the fx30 its great video camera
get the FX30 if you keep your A7RIV
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema This is what I am leaning towards.
There is a small dot under your right pupil. It is slightly sharper (more clear) on the A7IV compared to the FX30. If your pixel pupil peeping :)
On a general note they are. Look at the full Sony line up and take note of the full frame prices and aps-c prices
It actually has it.

Such as what lenses ?
Always appreciate your videos! You just lay it out without giving a strong bias. Best channel that I'm loving right now.
Was between these 2 for my B-cam, but the difference in skintones makes it a no brainer for me to go with the A7IV
Sony just lost my money.
that is a shame

Great job on the video Jason! Thanks for making it. The FX30 makes me think that Sony is going to release an A7000 soon. Betting it will have the sensor from the FX30 (but without the Cine modes) put into an A7IV chassis with the new screen from the A7RV. Same retail as the FX30.
Good shout 😂
I love that Sony is taking the aps-c range more seriously.
Thank You for this great video. I think, sharpness and low light capabilities of the a 7 IV are more important for me than cinematic features of the fx30. Thank You. Best regards, Kai the bee filmer from Kiel (Northern Germany).

Now they have,
Example the Movie the Hobbit, was filmed on a RED weapon Camera, shot at 4K 48P then 60P for the fast camera pans, the reason for this was, #1 because the dramatic landscape scenes and the panning they did was quite fast, if they shot this in 24P they would not be able to pan the cameras and move them as fast as they did, because it would be choppy and skip..
the higher your frame rates are the faster you can pan your camera with out chunky skipping.
They would have never been able to sustain the faster camera movements they did shooting at 24P or even 30P, so they shot this fully in 48P. and 60P
And the film still looked great and cinematic... Most people don't realize they shot this entire movie at 48P with exception to the camera pans, they didn't visually notice this..
Any experienced cinematographer though would have know this because of the fact that the camera pans they did would no way be possible at 24p and look as smooth as it did.
Here is a link to that in 4k
ruclips.net/video/zw_XKWBE_ss/видео.html
Even if you haven't known it, potentially every film you've ever seen has been shown at 24 FPS.
But the fast camera pans was filmed in 60P
However, only certain theaters actually showed the higher frame rate versions.
That will, change with new generations of filmmakers,
because the only reason for 24P is that old cinematic look, wanna be movie makers want to mimic movies but 24P is NOT what makes a good movie scene it's the color and the cinematography and acting and story and all that.
There is no real reason to shoot at 24P any more, in fact tons of fast action scenes have been always shot at high frame rates, such as star wars, Charlie's Angels, the Newer moves not the tv shows,
many martial art's scenes as well even in the older days Bruce Lee movies shot scenes at high frame rates because of the fact Bruce Lee's moves was too fast..
many action scenes was shot at high frame rates even in the 1980's some scenes was shot at 10,000 fps for the slow motion scenes, or else it would look bad.
So Today many Move's are shot in 48 FPS to 60Fps even in the entire movie.
Depending on the movie to withstand the fast action and camera pans.
the titanic was shot at 48 fps,
inland empire was shot at 60fps
Aquarela was shot at 96fps
Gemini Man was shot at 120 fps
here is a list of them films that was shot in high frame rates if you don't believe me and you never noticed it.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_with_high_frame_rates
People need to get off the 24p it's slow it's chunky and looks like shit in my Opinion.
people need to step up to today's technology and realize the 24p is not needed only needed back in the day,
Shooting in 24P Does not make you closer to being a professional cinematographer or movie maker, it just doesn't..
24p was only used because back in the stone age of filming and needed to be at that frame rate to work.
Shooting today in 24 P in my opinion makes you look like a wanna be cinematographer or movie maker, it makes you look dumb.
I have the Sony Lumix S5. Best camera they have ever made lol
hahahahahahahaha
Great videos Jason! Fab to see another Aussie here talking Sony cameras! 🙂
Thanks Jason waiting for you to make this comparison
haha thanks for watching
Already have the A7IV. I’m trying to decide on this as a second cam or a Pocket 4K for more narrative work.
Pocket 4k and FX30 are very different cameras here. Way more versatility in the FX30 but the pocket 4k offers a nice image. Have to consider lenses and auto focus and the whole sony ecosystem
Great content! But the bell sound effect sounds just like FB Messenger bell so it's really annoying =(
but i like feeling young again like when facebook was a thing
Both the Sony A74 and Sony FX30 are great would purchase the Sony A74 and maybe the Sony FX30
Congratulations Y0u have been shortlisted 🔝🔝
Very good video! Can you compared A7IV in APSC mode vs FX30?
Been waiting for this comparison. If I can get my hands on it ima just do it myself.
I will have to wait until I get it from my order. Sorry I had very limited time yet still made 5 videos haha
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thank You bro!!! Your videos are awesome

Qazi sent me here! Subscribed.
good comparison but please make a full compare between the FX30 & A6600
Except 6600's photography capabilities there is nothing to compare.
@@OUCGN idk i wanna see the 4k results both are apsc so its gonna be good for people who wants to upgrade
Why? Fx30 blows it away the end
Fx30 wins hands down unless it’s photography
But ninja can't do 16 bit at this moment it compresses it to 12 bit. Fx30 is nice but I gave up on crop sensor cam full frame never looking back I've sold all my crop glass and invest in full frame I have a7r4A and A7lV my next addition is fx3 I'll save an get the full frame.
yes
I realllllly wish they’d sell the FX3 without the $400 top handle. It seems like used FX3’s are just slightly less than new ones so obviously they will retain their value over time.
Can you make 1080 p difference? If FX30 has sharper mage than a6x00?
FX30 & a7cll 😎🤝🏼🍻
Great review! I have to say that in my eyes the A7iv looks sharper.
What about the fact that the a7iv has a view finder and fx30 don’t?
Jason, for me, as a twitch streamer full time and for doing vlogs, what you recomend me to buy? i was very interessed on zv-e1 but i understood that is impossible to use it as a webcam for streams, Its the a7iv the best option? i can get a a7iv NEW for just 1800€
U can always use apsc glass for video on A74 and get same 4K 60 fps output as FX30
A6000 S...?
Zv e1 !!
Thanks for another banger brother
What was the exact lens you used for the fx30 when shooting the boxing video. I know it was a prime lens but what was the exact one. GREAT VIDEO BY THE WAY.
I cycled between the 24mm and 85mm GM lenses
FX30 getting a point for because it has cheaper glass and can use APS-C glass. What about Full Frame using APS-C glass. I'm not even talking about crop mode. Many good apsc lenses can be used in full frame mode with minimal crop if at all.
this is true. Does make the A7IV quite versatile
Great video bro, thank you 🙏🏼
The a74 is a better hybrid camera but the FX30 is the better video-focused camera. Perfect for those with an a7s3/fx3
agreed
Just what I needed, thanks a lot!
Thanks for the video. What about recording limit? Is that 30min?
Neither camera has a record limit
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema that’s truly nice man! Thnks a lot 🙏🏼
Hello Sir, may I have the test footages like Waqas Qazi used? Hope can play around and do some color grading test. Wish you all the best bro
Damn man you’re so clutch !!! 🔥🔥🔥!!!
Thank you Jason,
I wanted to ask, would you recommend iPhone 14 for camera and the fx-30 combo or a7 iv? Mainly for TikToks/reels and ig photos
Great video, thank you :)
I have an a7iv but I'm thinking about getting an FX30 for a secondary body for video because having to purchase another a7iv is way too much money, I have some good Full Frame glass so I don't have to invest on APS-C lenses
Bought it, didn't like the APS-C... sent it back 2 hours later and bought another A7IV for my 2nd shooter.
I bought the LUT wow amazing thx
Thank you for the support
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I have one Sony fs7 ..what about the comparing with fx30 ? which is the good camera ?
Absolute nutter of a camera, love what Sony did with the FX 30 very affordable and powerful camera for people who just want to do videography related work.
Great video really enjoyed it looking forward to more!
Really helpful thank you. I have an A7iv and love it but I do miss the 4k 100fps for wildlife and was thinking about an A7siii to work alongside the A7iv, but maybe the FX30 would be the way to go as it fills in the bits the A7iv misses and is so much cheaper (& newer) than the A7siii & FX3.
Love the video bro but hate the text sound beeps lol
Thanks! You should have tried Rolling Shutter test with A7iv APSC mode too.
rolling shutter test is in another video. But if I tested this, I would have to discuss the A7IV has now less MP count and is not downsampled anymore which produces a different image
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Ok. Thanks Jason. Will check that out.
Yeah definitely. I feel having both these cameras can almost suit all the situations you throw at it
Great info as always! Thanks!
thank you for watching
The A7iii is also a low light power house when filming in 4K because of the downsampled 6K in high iso cause grain is so small
what would you recoomend for a studio setting? I want high quality studio footage that looks profesional and having a hard time choosing between the two... I'm video-centric but feels weird to buy an aps-c camera when I can get a full frame...
This question Jason!
Hello, thanks a lot for the video! I heard A7IV has sharper image at 1080P than FX30. Is that true?
Jason how does the FX30 rear screen compare to the A74 rear screen, I can see its almost twice the resolution, but is it brighter as its your only option outside.
Bro did you get that little plant from Target? Cuz that’s the exact same one I use lol
you can take away one is a video camera and one is hybrid more suited to photography, not really needed to compare
Que buena explicacion practica y entendible como me gustaria poder tener esa belleza de camara
