I'm torn between this and an older FS5. The FX30 seems a superior camera in almost every way, but I like the camcorder ergonomics a lot and the built-in ND filters can really be a game changer.
The FX line really is superior in every way. I'd recommend getting the FX30, it'll give you better colors and quality. And put a Nisi Variable ND on it, problem solved. The FS5 doesn't even have smooth NDs. If you really want a bigger form factor and good ND, save up for the FX6.
I have the fs5 ii, the a7s ii and the a7s iii and I didn't touch my fs5 ii since i got the a7s iii. The image quality, colors and autofocus are way better on the a7s iii its not even close. Like Luka said if you want that ergonomy buy the fx6, otherwise you can always get the fx30 and build your rig so it looks like a camcorder.
Interesting re your observation on the highlight roll-off versus the FX 6. There is a recent RUclips review that looks at the dynamic range of the FX30 technically (the stair step chart) - and finds that not only is it the 14+ stops as Sony claimed- but actually seems to be equivalent to the FX 6 (the charts are identical). Perhaps you are exposing a bit on the 'plus' side versus the FX 6 without even realizing it and loosing a bit of the highlights (while gaining more in the shadows)??
It is the transition between the highlights that is different in the FX30 and the FX6. The processing is different between the two cameras in the image.
I havent really noticed the highlight roll off issues and i live in South florida where youre basically always gonna get that blown-out sky. You really pushed me into getting this camera with all your videos on this and I gotta say - one of the best investments in a camera I have ever made (Hey sony - please give us shutter angle instead of shutter speed thou :) )
Agree with you, 13 stops is pretty good for those of us that know how to expose. Remember only a few years ago most cameras had 12 stop and people made the best of it.

Hey Jason, I'm looking to save up for my first cinema camera. I am stuck between the FX3 and the FX30. I already have the A7IV as my main camera right now, but I would use it as my B cam/photography camera once I get a cinema camera. I don't like the rolling shutter and find it kind of limiting when doing fast-paced shots. Additionally, I want something that's great in low light. It seems that the FX3 is the better choice, but wanted to know your thoughts as someone who has used both. Thanks so much!
@Bobby Fischer I actually got neither. I am sticking with my A7iv, and I invested in a better PC. The next camera I get will probably be an FX6 or maybe the new A7 model at the time. FX3 might be better for rolling shutter, but FX30 is literally enough to shoot a feature film. That might be a hot take, but I super don't care. Obviously, you can shoot a feature on the FX3, but the same is true with the FX30 and the money you save by going with the FX30 is insane. You literally save $2,000. Think about all the other gear you can buy with that. You can buy lenses, high quality lighting, high quality audio, high quality gimbal, high quality monitor, you could probably rig up you camera to make it look like a film rig along with those and then save the rest of the money or use it to buy yourself dinner for a week. It's amazing how affordable (relatively speaking) Sony has made the ability to be a filmmaker.
@IT'S ALL GONE you are so right, i have the A7iii and have been wanting to upgrade to a better video camera. I already invested in full frame glass, i have the audio, monitor and lighting, and gimbal. I've been adding thru out the years! But not im looking for that 10 bit. But the fx30 is crop, and now i have to go buy crop lens if i get it! And i really dont want to that. I guess i will take ur advice and wait..i feel that the FX3 is what i need but its still a A7siii with a face lift! Nothing new... i watched the undone video about the fx3 and its 2 years old now. Guess wait for the mark2 will be wise fx3 or the fx6. Thank you! These youtubers get to me lol
Fantastic deal clinching review for me 🙏 👏 For my long format video podcasting use case it has removed a similar UK priced A7IV from its shopping cart because overheating 🥵 🔥 is sadly a deal breaker
Still gonna get the sony fx30.... i see more pro then cons. From a gh5 user the fx30 is a big step forwards. In low Light and af. And the lens option is huge. Macro cine and tele lens. In eu its 2300 euro. In usa it is 1800 dollar. Hopefully i can buy it in usa this christmass in orlando.
Jason, when you're using CINE EI, how many points do you tend to overexpose on the photometer? When I leave it at 0.0 I notice that in post-production the video is very dark even after color correction. hugs from brazilians 🤙
It really is dependant on the scene and what you want to prioritise. Try use an external monitor and use false color or waveforms. Much more accurate way to expose the image as the multimetering gives you a general idea
Hi, I have been using A6300 with the kit and a Sigma 30 1.4 for last 5/6 years. In addition to that I have BMPCC 6K with Sigma 16-35 and Samyang 85 1.2, Canon 50 1.8 and I believe there is no camera that can produce such a good quality image in this budget. Now I need to replace my 6300 immediately for my regular works. I decided to stick with the A7 III or A7C. But after using BM RAW the 8bit footage could disappoint me in future. FX 30 is a good option but again I have to compromise with the Full Frame character. I don't have the budget to purchase FX3 right now. My only option is A7 IV or in extreme case A7 S III. Since I don't have any FF lens, I have to invest on them. Suggest me where to start. Thanks in advance. A follower from India.
Hello, I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and it's very hot here, and I work with events where the temperature is generally very high. And I would like to buy this camera, but I have doubts about its files, which are too heavy to edit. Ask me a question, will I need a very powerful computer? And how good is the Full HD resolution of this camera?
Jason please what are your thoughts I have the A6400 right now and I mainly use it for video and short filming like for RUclips. I am looking to purchase the fx30 what are your thoughts I do not want to go over 2400. Are there any other Sony cameras you can recommend for great cinematic view or should I just stick with the fx30
any camera can get cinematic style video is all about skills and how you use the camera, color grade. still i am using 6500(older sony camera) & X-T3 fuji still I can get a cinematic look video. if your looking a upgrade get a7siii but still fx30 still a good pro camera.
Serious question, why would I get this camera if I can just take my a7s3 out to shoot (mountain bike trails). It doesn't look much smaller. Would the APS-C on the FX30 not have that real nice bokeh? Is it too heavy to use as a selfie cam?
I thought about it for quite a while as well and went with the A7IV. I also have an a Sony A7C that I was thinking of selling and still get the FX30, but don't think I am going to do that as these two do what I need, both full frame, one a little lighter for easy walkabout vacation photos and if I am going to do anything heavy duty it is all the A7IV.
@@mrfryfilmguy I just made the same decision even though im mostly filming and it is what i wanna get into. But i love to shoot at night and im coming from a BMPCC4K so i am so looking forward for the IBIS, FF (compared to MFT lol), and Autofocus. I am thinking maybe it makes more sense to buy a FX3 at some time and pair it with the A7IV, rather than the Fx30 which looks great but lowlight kinda sucks i think
To record 70% inside the studio (fixed speaker head) and the other 30% b-roll with dji rs3 (setups, cars, etc.), would you choose the FX30 or the A7SIll?
Depends how big your studio is. Because if its a small room then the full frame will make it easier yo fit everything in the shot. Also if u need 4k 120p without the crop then a7siii is ur best bet
@@ICON-Studios It is a 4x7m study. In a Sony ZVE10, everything necessary enters the shot, although the blur is a bit compromised (the latter does not worry me). I don't know if for RUclips videos the difference in image quality between the A7SIII and the FX30 could be appreciated.
@@diegogarcan if you’re going for images quality the sony a7siii has the better sensor forsure. If you needed more sharpness then the fx30’s 6k downsampled 4k might be nice. Cheers for your thoughts I appreciate your time of going through all the great pros, but none of the cons are deal breakers to me and can be easily fixed. To me I think you're being a bit too harsh. I love this camera be so good if Sony puts their latest AI face tracking from the a7r5 in it
Thanks Jason! Long time watcher here. So on the FX 30 I have noticed in the log profiles the HDMI will only output 1080 instead of 4K. (Atomos Ninja V). I have found a work around by cutting off the log settings go into the picture profiles selecting PP 10 which is S-log 3 and then it will output 4K. Is there a way to do it through the log profiles? Also, I sent you a message on Instagram about color matching the FX 30 and the A7IV. Thanks
FX30 it way better for the price and for what you’re getting. A7C can’t even do half of what this camera can do. I was torn between the two because of the full frame censor and lowlight. But this camera is definitely worth it even if it is APSC plus the cheaper lens and it’s a sharper 4k then the A7C. It’s just better overall FX30 or just save like $600 more for A7IV.
my take, as I tried both, would be 16-50, AF is way faster and quieter with this lens. greater focal range can give you same bokeh effect as 1.8 glass. also, 16-50 is way more lighter setup . i returned my 18-35, mainly because of AF issues (it damn NOISY and fx30 camera was picking up the sound of AF on this lens, and that sound was driving me crazy believe me or not). 18-35 is built optically well but this lens is OLD. heavy materials, slow and noisy AF and overall I think it was still good in 2019 and earlier. in 2023 = 16-50 for the win. AF is instantaneous. this lens and several GM 1.4F prime lenses for controlled situations is all what you need for FX30.
Lots of negatives you didn't notice. No EVF. No exposure by shutter angle. Giro and other processing requires Sony Catalyst. No BRAW. Very few lenses matched to the camera size. (Big expensive full-frame monsters still dominate.) Built-in screen is too small. Nasty menu system based on still camera operation. Not sure how this can compete with Blackmagic offerings?
@@Chris-ey7zy nobody depends on the built in battery, most use Vmounts. its a cinema camera and they generally dont have autofocus, people that need it use the LIDAR system. the BRAW image it puts out stomps Sony any day of the week.

FX3 honestly would be the better option
BMPCC 6k Pro
What did you get 3 month later?
Sorry if I missed it in the video...is the top handle worth it?
Fantastic deal clinching review for me 🙏 👏 For my long format video podcasting use case it has removed a similar UK priced A7IV from its shopping cart because overheating 🥵 🔥 is sadly a deal breaker
Still gonna get the sony fx30.... i see more pro then cons. From a gh5 user the fx30 is a big step forwards.
In low Light and af. And the lens option is huge. Macro cine and tele lens. In eu its 2300 euro. In usa it is 1800 dollar. Hopefully i can buy it in usa this christmass in orlando.
way more pros than cons for sure
I just got the Fx30 last month...can I make an actual movie with it?
Multi-face inter-shoe 😂😂😂 good one!!!
Does FX30 has overheating problem on 4K recording ?
Hello Jason, what cage are you using for the fx30? Thank you
Jason, when you're using CINE EI, how many points do you tend to overexpose on the photometer? When I leave it at 0.0 I notice that in post-production the video is very dark even after color correction.
hugs from brazilians 🤙
It really is dependant on the scene and what you want to prioritise. Try use an external monitor and use false color or waveforms. Much more accurate way to expose the image as the multimetering gives you a general idea
What VND you recommend for Sony systems?
I’m working on all those things
Should I get this and get rid of my a7r3 or keep it and pass on this
Thanks for this Jason. Could you assist with links to the rig at 5:01?
You’re not asking me, but if you would… FX 30.
For tub and gun videography and also Studio.
But you have the Blsxkmagic for that.
Thanks Jason, do you have specific luts made for FX30? I have been using the Phantom luts, it works fine but it’s really hard to fix the skin tones.
I still use my A7IV LUT on the fx30 then slightly tweak the skin tones
Hello, I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and it's very hot here, and I work with events where the temperature is generally very high. And I would like to buy this camera, but I have doubts about its files, which are too heavy to edit. Ask me a question, will I need a very powerful computer? And how good is the Full HD resolution of this camera?
Jason please what are your thoughts
I have the A6400 right now and I mainly use it for video and short filming like for RUclips. I am looking to purchase the fx30 what are your thoughts
I do not want to go over 2400.
No reason to get this cam then
Yeaa okey I want Fx30... or maybe A7IV... or FX30!... Or maybe A7IV!!!... Damn only I have this problem? 🤔 hard decision...
I thought about it for quite a while as well and went with the A7IV. I also have an a Sony A7C that I was thinking of selling and still get the FX30, but don't think I am going to do that as these two do what I need, both full frame, one a little lighter for easy walkabout vacation photos and if I am going to do anything heavy duty it is all the A7IV.
why not both? haha
I’m torn between the fx30 and A7IV. And the FF look and low light of the A7IV is the biggest plus for me.
I was torn between the two. In the end i went A7IV , Blown away by how good it is. FF, lowlight is fantastic.
@@mrfryfilmguy I already have a ZVE10, and the apsc sensor can only do so much.
Great video 🤩
Thank you 🤗
This is a great B cam camera
Absolutely
Would be good to use as bcam with a full frame camera as the A cam?
My pics and videos look little bulged at the corners like fish eye. Can someone please tell me what is wrong? I am using 18-50mm sigma with FX30.
I would consider this camera if I hadn't just bought a camera lol I am saving my pennies for the FX4
an FX4 or FX3 II would be insane
37 degrees outside in middle of December ...where are you?
Australia. Brisbane
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema that what we are missing at the moment in west Europe
where's the cage & side handle from ?
How does the raw work if it’s 20+ MP sensor?
What's the best first lens to buy for the FX30 for someone who is just starting and has no lens at all?
sigma 18-50mm 2.8
I'm planning to use a Sony 18-105 f4,0 PZ, which I already own and love to use with my Sony apsc cameras (nex6, 6000, 6600).
What handle is on his camera
To record 70% inside the studio (fixed speaker head) and the other 30% b-roll with dji rs3 (setups, cars, etc.), would you choose the FX30 or the A7SIll?
Depends how big your studio is. Because if its a small room then the full frame will make it easier yo fit everything in the shot. Also if u need 4k 120p without the crop then a7siii is ur best bet
@@ICON-Studios It is a 4x7m study. In a Sony ZVE10, everything necessary enters the shot, although the blur is a bit compromised (the latter does not worry me). What matters most to me is the image quality, color and that good looks that the A7SIII has.
I have an A7siii and sometimes when I crop I wished it had more megapixels yo downsample from. But paired with a proper sharp lens you should be fine!
@@diegogarcan in fixed studio lighting and no movement you will not see a difference between a7siii and fx30.
I’m a videomaker/photographer from Italy. I already have only an a7iii, but I want to upgrade my setup. It’s hard to decide if keep the a7iii and buy fx30 for video only, or maybe sell the 7iii and buy only a 7IV that I’ll use for both video and photo. Can someone help me? Thanks
Cheers for your thoughts I appreciate your time of going through all the great pros, but none of the cons are deal breakers to me and can be easily fixed. To me I think you're being a bit too harsh. I love this camera be so good if Sony puts their latest AI face tracking from the a7r5 in it
More chance of Bristol City FC getting into the Premier League than Sony improving a released camera via firmware 😂
thx a lot
Thanks Jason! Long time watcher here. So on the FX 30 I have noticed in the log profiles the HDMI will only output 1080 instead of 4K. (Atomos Ninja V). I have found a work around by cutting off the log settings go into the picture profiles selecting PP 10 which is S-log 3 and then it will output 4K. Is there a way to do it through the log profiles?
Also, I sent you a message on Instagram about color matching the FX 30 and the A7IV.
Thanks
Solid upload
it is
Which one is winning between A7C and Fx30 ?
FX30 it way better for the price and for what you’re getting. A7C can’t even do half of what this camera can do. I was torn between the two because of the full frame censor and lowlight. But this camera is definitely worth it even if it is APSC plus the cheaper lens and it’s a sharper 4k then the A7C. It’s just better overall FX30 or just save like $600 more for A7IV.
would you recomment sigma 1.8 18-35 with mc-11 or sigma 2.8 16-50 e mount for wedding videos?
my take, as I tried both, would be 16-50, AF is way faster and quieter with this lens. greater focal range can give you same bokeh effect as 1.8 glass. also, 16-50 is way more lighter setup . i returned my 18-35, mainly because of AF issues (it damn NOISY and fx30 camera was picking up the sound of AF on this lens, and that sound was driving me crazy believe me or not). 18-35 is built optically well but this lens is OLD. heavy materials, slow and noisy AF and overall I think it was still good in 2019 and earlier. in 2023 = 16-50 for the win. AF is instantaneous. this lens and several GM 1.4F prime lenses for controlled situations is all what you need for FX30.
just to clarify, my previous comment is endorsing using sigma 18-50 over 18-35, not non-existing sigma 16-50, just a massive typo on my side, thx
Bro, you gotta try the 24mm GM lens for the FX30. Just picked it up today to go with my Sigma 24-70. I'm sitting on these for a MINUTE
I already use it with the FX30 :)
im stuck between this and the a7iv the thing is im being offered them both for the same price buy the seller so im stuck lool
I hate when people keep comparing a product with something 3 times more expensive. What FX6 has to do with this?
Nice
so basically don't bother with 4k 120fps ?
Am I the only one seeing at 10:31 sec that the sensor is tilted?
Cool!
ya
You holding the camera in the cage and moving it around made me dissy.. i want it so bad 😞
Black Magic bad battery life. Bad autofocus. Big as well
@@Chris-ey7zy nobody depends on the built in battery, most use Vmounts. its a cinema camera and they generally dont have autofocus, people that need it use the LIDAR system. the BRAW image it puts out stomps Sony any day of the week.

Can't get one to buy
No 60k atomos raw🤦♂️
RAW is pointless still in these cameras. Not a strong codec because of RED R3D patent
The camera is cheap only outside of Europe.2299,00 euro's in Europe is not cheap. On this moment is the Sony IV is 2469,00 euro's.Its with almost all electronics like that:way to expensive in Europe
This sounds like a repackaged GH5 with better low light capabilities
4 percent crop factor at all frame rates. No way
You wouldn’t buy it over 4 percent crop?
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema
Even not 1 percent crop. My Sony zv E10 has zero crop so I shoot at 4k25p. Why I want to make my Sony 15mm 1 4G a 16mm lens?
@@Sambo111 I’m not sure if you’re being serious but with all due respect that is a terrible reason to hate the Fx30. The zv-e10 and Fx30 are miles apart in features and overall quality. A 15mm lens is not the same throughout all 15mm lenses. Field of view varies depending on manufacturers and even lenses themselves. My 50mm f1.8 FE has a slightly different field of view of the 50mm F1.2 GM. I would worry more about your skills as a creator and not 1mm you’re missing out on
