    Well, we had to cover it eventually, so why not get it out of the way. Resident Evil Survivor has long been considered the worst game in the series, and I'm not exactly ready to challenge that on this one, but there are some things that makes this game a little more worth playing, than you might have thought.

      From what I've seen survivor, dead aim, and outbreak are all considered canon. Not necessarily what is said by individual characters but that the events happened overall. Sheena island did have an outbreak, so did the spencer rain, and all 8 main outbreak characters escaped the city but we don't know by which scenario

    One thing that makes both Resident Evil Survivor and Resident Evil 7 interesting from a game design history standpoint is that, early in Resident Evil 1's development, a first-person game was what they were actually going for (as you point out in your video). The shift to a more Alone in the Dark style adventure-game format came as a concession to the hardware limitations of the PS1 as perceived at the time, though it's possible they could have brought their original vision to life if they had designed it later on in the console's lifespan--the overall quality of PlayStation 1 games and what the system could pull off as developers learned the tricks necessary to optimize better and better technological achievements for early 3D hardware, well, "leaps and bounds" hardly covers it.
    And oh boy, I know exactly "not all four." Rest in peace, Dino Crisis. You died too young, you ridiculous, magnificent bastard of a series.

    The survivor series are first and foremost light gun games, you don't really need a light gun to play but could you imagine playing duck hunt or time crisis with a dpad?
    The whole game is built so that you can play it with just a light gun and it's surprisingly intuitive, pointing outside of the screen and pulling the trigger to move and using A and B to turn etc
    I do admit that I have sort of a soft spot for the game even though I know it has its issues, also I 100% relate to liking the look and feel of PS1 games, small and compact areas just have that certain type of charm too

    I always thought this game was Capcom's "response" to House of the Dead. Same short no-save storyline, branching paths, zombies (duh) and, of course, first person shooting. They probably figured that the playable movement would give them an edge over the on-rails nature of HOTD. Then they went and ruined that by removing lightgun support and not even bothering with a PC version (this game would have been infinitely more playable with a mouse).
    Also, you gotta love how they took an already cliche storyline and made it even dumber. It'd be like Batman trying to infiltrate Arkham Asylum by calling himself The Joker, and not even bothering with a disguise. Even for Resident Evil this reaches peak levels of preposterousness.

      Really looking forward to seeing what you decide to do next, what I really like about this retrospective is you really looked deep to find positives about survivor, I usually hear people putting it down so it was good to hear some positives

    The main character, the first time I saw him, looked exactly like James Sunderland. And surprise, surprise, he has amnesia. Then I saw Heaven's Night. Pretty sure this *was* on purpose.

    During Survivor's release, there was a small craze around light-gun like shooter was starting to pick (Dreamcast and PS2 had a decent amount of those). I can only assume Capcom trying and failing hard in that.

    It does seem a bit harsh to rate the controls a D if you're only going to play it with a pad. The pad was only intended as a backup method in case you didn't have a G-con 45. I know it only had pad support in the US but as someone from the UK where it did have G-con support it seems like you're missing out. I think Survivor was the first light gun game that wasn't on rails, it deserves a bit of credit for trying something unique at least.

    Still a good review but was hoping you'd try the GunCon out given the JP copy. You've got muscles, sure you can move one CRT into the house. ^_^ What kind of screen do I use, both. ;)
    Idk I've heard the term CRT Evangelist thrown around but many people seem almost CRT Phobic at this point. But I digress, I got to get back to moving all my TVs around the room again like we all do every day, sure hard to own screens.

    I did think that the Mr X tyrant dude walking down that long corridor toward you was really creepy back when I played this as a kid! I hated this game though I did finish it. It was one of the only games where I just couldnt get over the slowdown.

    I have some suspicion that this game was originally just an on-rails light gun shooter meant for arcades, and Capcom saw the opportunity to release another home console RE game so they padded this out.

    You should also had mentioned you can basically moonwalk past 90% of every enemies. The only exception being the several Mr.X and Hypnos. Hunters can't hit you while you turn your back to them but they often jump into your view on purpose

    This is a surprise!
    Salute to you for finishing this game in Japanese like how me, my Uncle , and my Dad did with Biohazard 2.
    This game was weird, but the best part of it was the Hypnos Tyrant. For some reason I always called it the "clown tyrant". 😂

    • @zayaannashrid1374
      @zayaannashrid1374 6 лет назад +2

      It's surprisingly not hard if you know the game's general flow. But kudos to your dad and Uncle for playing it so much(i'm assuming). Now that's actual love for games

    • @KamenRider1
      @KamenRider1 6 лет назад +2

      Zayaan Nashrid
      Yes they do. Biohazard 2 (on a black disc from Japan) was the very first game I ever had on my PlayStation 1 and they played THE HELL out of it! I even still have the stickers of Claire and Leon that came with the game. 😁
      It took some Detective work intially (and thankfully my Father was an actual Police Detective) but we all managed. My routine as a child was: School, then Karate class, and Biohazard 2 at the end of the day. 😂😎

      They're still around. We play video games from time to time, but not as much.
      My Dad has since moved up the ranks significantly and has been very busy, my Uncle has a PC that he plays a few games with at his home when he doesn't have a construction project that's keeping him busy.
      As for me, I've been very busy with my Law studies and my training in Filipino Martial Arts/Arnis. I do play RE 2 on my PS3 with my girlfriend sometimes though. ☺

  • @SteveKi
    @SteveKi 6 лет назад

    This game did have two interesting reveals: Nicholai survived the events of RE3 and Children were used to create Tyrants. It's interesting to note that RE0 made Survivor canon. I enjoyed the game as well. A definite curiosity in the series.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +1

      Is it just me, or do the notes and journal entries found in survivor, tell much more interesting stories then the actual game itself??

    • @SteveKi
      @SteveKi 6 лет назад

      Avalanche Reviews Given how the game was made reusing prior assets and such, the files had to end up being the best way to convey the story elements. How about that RE Survivor remake, Capcom. We do it?

    I just got this game this weekend! I remember seeing it on the EB Games shelves as a kid and had to pick it up for my budding PS1 collection. Every criticism you have is correct, but gosh dang, I just can't help but love it for all the wrong reasons. 20 years of nostalgia well paid off--even if it is fairly shallow and could've used a save feature haha

    As far as the pre-recorded cutscenes are concerned, I'd imagine it had something to do with avoiding loading between scene changes and perhaps these cutscenes didn't run fast enough in engine and had to be sped up in post. Just a guess...

      Out of all the time I've spent in Japan, I never get a chance to visit amusement parks. I would have loved to check that out. Great and thorough review. Although, I would personally give it a higher rating per my own bias. A simple FPS, straight forward with no puzzles and with rail shooter elements, the maps, items, and nostalgic 32bit graphics and environments in sync with the previous titles. Not as good as the main RE series, but a great timeless novelty for hardcore RE fans.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I still like it a lot, but I doubt most people would be willing to get past the clunkyness. I had a great time with it when it first came out, but it looks like the general public made they're minds up on it. Definitely worth experiencing.
