    Alright, hear me out guys. Let's take a semi traditional Resident Evil game, and have it take place on a boat. What's that? Capcom already did that 2 or 3 times? Well, what if we have Jill Valentine almost spilling out of a skin tight scuba suite???

    Honestly, Revelations one of my favorite Resident Evil games, and I could never really put my finger as to why, but I feel as though recently I figured it out. You said that the enemy design is sorta samey, and while I can understand that, just having this theme of creatures from the ocean hits a sweet spot for me, not to mention it was one of the first RE games I played, downloading the demo on my 3DS when I was 16. When I played it on PC, I was blown away, and it was the first time I payed attention to the story in an RE game instead of just skipping past or ignoring all the story while eagerly waiting for the next enemy to show up. This game is what started my love for the series identity as a whole, and not just for the "shoot not-zombies, big set pieces and bosses, explosions!" gameplay of RE4 & 5, and for that, it has a special place in my heart.
    And then Revelations 2 came along, and I heard you'd got to play as the glorious Mr. Jill Sandwich himself, and it made me love the series even more.

    • @mechadoggy
      @mechadoggy 4 года назад +18

      For me, Revelations 1 is my favorite because it really fleshes out the BSAA as an organization and makes it real. Also, the game has this whole cast of supporting characters through which we get different perspectives throughout the story. Plus, the game has the creepy mansion atmosphere you get from previous old RE games but on a cruise ship instead, making it different. Finally, this game has some ship tease and chemistry between Jill and Chris.

      For me, Resident Evil’s story is a big part of what makes it fun. It’s totally over the top, with over the top heroes and villains, but that’s part of its charm.

      I think the idea of deep sea mutants is good but I don't like the art style that makes them look like balloon animals or the designs that include organic weapons (like circular saws or spears and shields), imo they just look silly.

    I'm surprised you didn't bring this up when you mentioned them, but, zombies were going to be in the game. If you go back to the original reveal trailer you can see zombies. Said trailer also had Chris and Jill pointing guns at each other other a guy whose tied to a chair. There's even a few shots of someone who looks like Hunk and maybe(?) ouroborous tentacles. People always talk about 1.5 or the various iterations of 4, but I really wanna know what Revelations story was originally going to be.

    Another awesome retrospective, however, I can shed some light on MT Framework as I'm a dev xD
    So check this out. MT Framework is NOT a game engine which is contrary to most of what you could find on Wikipedia. This means that it is much easier to be able to extend to work with different consoles and devices as it doesn't have all the features and bloat that a Game Engine has. MT Framework is a framework as the name suggests, it is a bunch of loosely coupled libraries that handle graphics, sound, physics and so on which makes it easier to swap out different portions of the library if they are a bit too robust for the game being designed with it.
    I should also note that MT Framework Mobile was used over MT Framework as it was built with the graphics, control scheme, cpu processing power, sound chips and other hardware with mobile devices as the main target.
    To sum this all up, A Framework is a collection of libraries and tools that are used to develop games and applications whereas a Game Engine is built specifically for creating games. There are pros and cons associated with both. For example with a framework, you'd have to still build a core engine for the game (which is different from a game engine) from scratch. A game engine handles most of the core engine aspects of the game development process and generally makes it so you mostly only have to do scripting to create your game.

      I can further compound on this by asking all of you to look into something called QT Framework. It is a graphics library in c++ that is cross platform and very powerful. Generally, things in the software and game development world will follow the same naming conventions. It is one of those things that is rarely deviated from due to naming familiarity allows for you to actually understand what something is supposed to target.
      Unity Engine, Xenko Engine, CryEngine, Unreal Engine and most other game engines tend to have the name engine in them. It isn't really a standard to do that, but it is a general thing that does happen.
      Framework however, is an abstraction in which software providing generic functionality can be selectively changed by additional user-written code, thus providing application-specific software. A software framework provides a standard way to build and deploy applications.
      .Net Framework, Mono Framework, Boost, Juce, Chromium and many others out there tend to have framework in the name or in the description.
      There is one last thing to talk about and that is a library. A library is a collection of code and data intended for reuse. A library will generally cover a specific task such as only graphics, audio, physics or handling input.
      Basically, you start with a library. When you add multiple libraries together with some tools for assembling your game or application, it becomes a framework. A framework will become a game engine when you add more tools and a scene graph and world / level editor to the mix.
      This should add a little more insight into the development world and how we tend to distinguish things from one another.

      I feel like most _RE_ titles don't have that much enemy variety and that it isn't really a problem. The bulk of your enemies are usually some form of "zombie" and then you'll have a small handful of other enemies that appear in certain areas, as well as a few "boss" class enemies. _RE4_ and later games, when they started using "intelligent zombies" mostly only had variety in the manner of weapon they might use, along the the "mid-boss" style chainsaw or executioner enemies. At it's core, 90% of the enemies are incidental "B.O.W.s" and as such are much more common and less threatening than the actual B.O.W.s that the viruses are used to develop.

    Let's just take a moment to appreciate the genious monster designs of REvelations. Seriously, Lovecraftian deep-sea monsters is such a great idea, it brings that "fear of the unknown" that every horror media dreams of achieving. The monster design is the best (non-boss) in the entire series IMO, I'm just fascinated by it. Look up concept art, it's absolutely astounding.

    First of all THANK YOU for doing this reviews. It really puts a smile on my face everytime i see the notification for your videos. It's really awesome that there are still such big fellow RE nerds out here in youtube.
    I rememeber when i heard Capcom was doing a new "retro" RE and man i was hyped as shit, then i realized it was for the N3DS... But then, after a while it came on Xbox 360 and since i owned that beauty i bought right away. I freaking loved. And i know, it's not one of the best RE ever created but for me (and after the disaster that RE6 was) this was like a send from heaven. It has many flaws but at the same time it's in my top 5 RE games ever.
    The graphics were really good for the time, the music was melancholic and fitted the tone of the game. The controls were finally improved and all the customization for weapons and items gave me hours and hours of joy. Ye3s, the plot was crap, but in good, goofy, funny way, not in that dark, moody and awfull RE6 style. And yes, some characters were annoying, like that clown looking guy (and don't even get me started on the awfull voice acting), or those two weird creepy guys thatyou control in a mission. But that was nothing compared to been able to play as my lovely love Jill Valentine... i mean... DAT ASS haha. Parker was a good addition to the cast also. Jessica on the other hand... i hope she never returns!
    The other thing i didn't like and that you didn't mentioned was a huge issue for me at the begining. The way the camera keeps moving, simulating being on a ship was really bad for me. I was having movement sickness for a while and i felt that effect was not necesary even if it was kind of cool to see it for a couple of minutes.
    It really amazes me how you complaint about the controls and the way characters move in this game but didn't do the same for RE6 (in my opinion those were terrible beyond believe). I guess that shows that everyones opinion and experiences with games are different haha.
    And yes those "previously on" were fine the first time but in multiple playtroughs are fucking annoying as hell.
    I agree with you in that the enemy variety was really bad, i got tired of seeing and killing the same white monsters over and over again, and plus, they really wanted you to fight hunters.... wich for me was the absolute worst since hunters are my most hated enemy in the entire franchise. I know they are cool and dangerous but i died so many many many times thank's to those assholes since the first RE that i can't help but hate them with all my soul haha.
    Can i ask why you didn't even mentioned the AWESOME Raid Mode??? For me that was a huge part for what i really loved this game. I'm not a multiplayer/online type of guy and to be honest i never even liked the mercenaries mode (i'ts cool but, i HATE when games makes you do something in a timer, for me that's just no fun) but Raid mode hooked me like no other mode. I spent like 120 hours playing it and even got to N°1 in the ladders for my country (Chile) and N°4 in South América. My poor disc got almost destroyed out of so much use haha.
    Anyway, sorry again for the long post. As always good review and keep the good work sir.
    PS: I still have no idea what the big "REVELATIONS" were...

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад +1

      First off, thanks for all the love man! Second, ya know, I never thought about that, but that's a good point. My wife usually gets motion sickness real bad from games, but I've never had an issue with it. That being said, I can understand why that first part would effect you that way. There was a shit ton of camera rocking and swaying. As for the raid mode, I just never have gotten into RE raid/mercenary modes. I enjoy being skilled at RE games, but I like doing that in the context of staying alive and experiencing the game world. Something about racking up points for kills, just doesn't get me going. That's pretty insane you ranked number 4 in all of South America! Now I'm self conscious of my gameplay looking scrubby as hell to you. HAA!

    • @chinaski6593
      @chinaski6593 5 лет назад

      You're welcome sir! i just love your videos and the work you're putting on them.
      By the way, i'm not a good RE player. I mean, i have my moments, but overall i consider myself just average. I guess the reason i climbed so high in the ladder was because i was stubborn as shit. I played and played and played. i think for this tipe of mode that's the key factor. I can uderstand that didn't work for you, same way mercenaries never worked for me. It has nothing to do with the old and classic RE games but for me it was incredible fun and addictive. It's weird that rade mode for RE Revelations 2 didn't grab me as much as the first one, even if it's objectively better in almost every way..

    I remember getting both revelations 1 and 2 as gifts off of steam, knowing that they were a different take on the resident evil main games I was curious so I checked it out. Revelations 1 felt more like Resident Evil 5 to me in a more simplistic story line as well as graphically just different. It felt like an old game graphically to me. I did like the characters but I was surprised at the ending of the game to me, it felt like there was more to the story by the time it had ended. I am looking forward to Revelations 3 whenever that will be, because it felt like they never resolved 1 to me. Anyway, great review man, keep it up.

    Hey so, idk if you still have intentions to do more designs for your Redbubble shop, but you should do some RE shirts! Idk if that would be hard to do, but considering I want to eventually buy a lot of the ones you have up already, that would definitely be one I would add to my cart!

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks man! It's always good to be a bad influence on other collectors. HA! Ya know, I've tried to do a few shirts with RE title screens on them, but the prerendered 2d images don't look as good upscaled, vs the sprite work I usually work with. With the sprites, it looks retro on a shirt, but with some 2d art, the color banding and compression artifacts, just make it look like a low quality print on a shirt. Kind of sucks. It would be cool to have access to high quality art assets, and make a shirt out of those.

    Its sequel, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, actually has nothing to do with this game story-wise, it is however connected by its tone and structure. Both Revelations games take place between two main entries, they both follow an episodic structure, they both harken back to the series' survival-horror roots, and they both feature an arcade style "Raid Mode" unique to this sub-series.
    Takes place between the events of Resident Evil 4 and 5.

    I liked parts of Revelations, but was very put off by the comparisons to the originals. For every great moment, there was a straight up shooting gallery (there was a Hunter section that lasted I swear to god 20-30 minutes). I can’t stand the enemy wave encounters.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад +5

      Yeah, I didn't care for that part too much, but I loved the location. Seeing the hunters running around outside of the building, and climbing on the windows, was pretty damn cool.

    • @joshuaweston4489
      @joshuaweston4489 2 года назад

      @@AvalancheReviews Same. The location is cool and seeing the Hunters that early in the game adds tension. The flip side to that, however, is that the section gets too action heavy and eventually just throws hordes of the same enemy type at you. It's not the most egregious example of this type of thing in the series, but I don't think Capcom has ever really pulled it off a second time. The first, of course, being that part in RE4 with the villagers slowly breaking into the cabin.
