At least Richard's voice acting was 1000% better than the original. Wesker wasn't quite as pathetic a villain either since they got rid of his "hey.. Stop it.." to Chris' laughter at his deluded plan.

Looking back and looking at them side by side, it's hard to imagine that the original RE and the remake were separated by just a single console generation...it's perhaps the greatest example of just how drastic the leaps in technology could be back then in regards to hardware upgrades...these days, not much difference, at least graphically.
Like you and many others, I still think this game looks absolutely gorgeous even today...it just creates the perfect look for what it is. I want a Doctor Hauzer remake done in that style. Anyway, loving these videos man, glad to see they're getting the attention they deserve. Also, marry me Jared for #1 sexy time. Jocyne doesn't have to know.

    • @silverloto6773

@@suppaman12 a PS2 hardware based remake at that time would had a significant downgrade and limitations, PS2 hardware was less powerful than the h/w GC had and GC got less powerful h/w than the OG XBOX. The sucess of the PS2 as the ultimate winner of that era of game consoles was that even if the H/W was inferior, it had a lot of back up from third parties, sony being more approachable as a company that devs could try the games they wanted to release, the code being a lot more dev friendly and it ultimately result in a huge game library (with most of the game titles being average to great) and for that matters, in a more well round library with a lot of different genres; it also helped that most of this titles were friendly to the japanese market and the ever increasing public demand almost everywhere for said titles; it's still a great console to play good jrpgs and more obscure games.

What I love most about REmake is how, while it's a fantastic game on its own right, it really becomes a masterpiece when you go into it after becoming intimately familiar with the original. The way it plays with returning players' expectations while still remaining faithful to the original is nothing short of genius. It's still the absolute gold standard for remakes IMO.

prerendered backgrounds. i really wish they had remade re2 and 3 like this back on the gamecube, those remakes would have been so much better imo. they would have kept all the areas and added to them, improved on them. they would have improved on the a and b scenarios in 2, rather than just get rid of them like re2r did. they probably would have kept in and improved on the random aspect of re3, where you run into different enemy groups in many locations every time you play the game.
i beat re2r twice and i was so bored by the end of that 2nd playthrough i never wanted to look at it again, never got that bored with any other re game. if they had done it like re1 remake, i would have beaten it over a dozen times and still never got bored of it. there's a small area from re2 in re0 and every time i get to that area it makes me want re2 in that engine so bad.

"Any changes made must serve two goals; improve the realism AND improve the gameplay." That development rule should be the industry gold-standard. Realism in games is great, but only to a point. There is a line where further added realism begins detracting from the actual fun of the gameplay. And at the end of the day, escapism and fun is why we play in the first place. If I wanted my experience to be completely realistic, I'd just go out and do it. The GCN R.E.make was a great example of this done right.

    • @jamesrussell2936
      @jamesrussell2936 5 лет назад +7

Like how games like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior had some relatively realistic parts in it, but mostly was kind of surreal and the maps were made for fun, first, and any sort of realism second.

I agree. And after playing RE2 remake now, I thought about this balance. And this line with the realism detracting from the fun of the gameplay, is exactly how I felt playing it... Great game in itself. But it's oversimplified story wise, takes itself too seriously. And although it looks great, I think the realism did detract from the actual fun of the gameplay imo. Theres survival games that have danger without horror as all the players danger really is is character death and manual saves can make the character death more impactful if you forget to save. That is what RE's proper survival horror instalments have gotten perfect, the balance of horrific imagery. makes RE enjoyable rather than a rage fest in the mould of Dark Souls and such, and also sets it apart from survival games like Ark and others in that ilk were its scarce resources and perma death and not graphic violence and grotesque, visceral imagery

I guess the idea of capcom being an inconsistent game dev company comes by the decisions they would take back at the end of the 2000's and beginning of the 2010's; the problem was the same, they make some games with bad placed dlc's, mobile and web browser based games that ultimately stole many peoples money with ridiculous charge for different items and addons; the matter that some to most of this web and mobile games were aimed at young children, the most well known case was that of a little girl who spend a couple hundred (if not a thousand+) dollars for berries (kinda remember it was a facebook game?). Before that decisions were made, capcom usually was accepted as a good game dev company. It's really sad that they managed to ruin the image they used to had among fans/gamers.

My two biggest complaints though are the voice acting/script and the fact that the story isn't completed with two playthroughs (they just kind of overlap each other)
As for the issue with cutscenes on the GameCube, I remember being annoyed by that when it first released, and it's weird because I only remember those issues in Jill's playthrough. I don't remember the freezing in any of Chris's playthrough.

That being said, a unique experience I had a few years ago on my pc was playing a fan made game called Resident Evil RPG that basically combined both stories in a unique and interesting way, while adding a lot of their own stuff to it as well, such as expanding the graveyard area and a few areas in the house, and adding a few extra campaigns. I can safely say that Resident Evil Remake is the BEST Resident Evil entry in the entire series. Better than RE2 and RE4. Your videos have made me a die hard resident evil fan! I bought the origins collection and 4 remasters for PS4 years ago for very cheap at release prolly bout 40 each, never played them, I had been introduced to RE4 at Wii port launch by my best friend and I really enjoyed it, i was too intimidated by the earlier entries they scared me at young ages and I read guides on them and really just felt the games were so scary and the fixed camera turned me off..... until I seen these videos, plopped in my origins collections and beat them both, have yet to play RE2, RE3 & CV but I’m going to purchase CV tomorrow, preorder REmake2, and I’ve gotta say I owe it to you, I’m addicted to this and your perspective and praise has made me realize what I was missing, I love these games and this series and now I feel that the earlier games are way better than 4-7, just so good, thank you man I actually needed this in my life right now as oddly as this sounds resident evil is helping me release my anxiety on something productive and the story is so intriguing it’s great! Thank you so much man! Keep doing reviews, I’d love to see you do a whole MGS series retrospective!

I'm so glad you went back to cover this entry in detail, because there's just not enough that can be said about how fantastic it is. This is, in my mind, the definitive way to play Resident Evil, bar none, and probably the best entry in the entire series for me, and I tend to be pretty critical of my RE games, like how the QTEs and instakills in RE4 make some parts of the game a joyless experience, or how segments of RE0 that demand character swapping really break up the flow of gameplay and take you out of it a bit. This has got to be the best game remake I've ever witnessed and, as I said, the best game in the series for me at least.
I'm sorry that Operation Raccoon City is next, I truly am. Just...please promise me you won't try to put yourself through the hell that is Umbrella Corps, and I say this more for your sake than anyone else's. I mean, I don't know if the servers are even still running now, and if they're not, it's probably best that they stay that way.

Opening thoughts: I have to agree. This hardline purist approach wont work for every franchise reboot. However considering RE and its fans, mikami made the right call being so strict. I hope REmake2 gets a similar treatment in respects to the changes made. Being; strictly for realism or improving the gameplay experience.
Puzzles and mystery were a key part of the og experience. I can accept that branding.
While i understand your gripes about some of the perceived graphical issues and agree as much as a layman can. I always chalked it up to kind of being a product of pre rendered. backgrounds

I could talk about this game for hours. I can go on about every RE game, but in my heart I know this is my favourite.
On the initial GC release, I would go so mad whenever I entered a room, thought a cutscene was starting and put my controller down, only to realize that, nope, that was just how the game looked. The HD version revealed some more trickery, when I realized there was a save room right before the final boss, that I had COMPLETELY missed when i played the game on GC in 2002.
I love this game. It was the first game I ever platinumed on purpose. In fact, since the game is shared across the PS3 and PS4, I might do so again.

In short, the game's rendering resolution is stuck at 1440p by default, which obviously is way too much for a toaster-tier laptops.
The fix lets you change the render-res to your liking, ie. to 1024x768, thus significantly reducing the stress on the system. My 7yo cheap i3 @ 2.1ghz + GT 540M laptop easily rocks solid 30fps at 720p, High textures / Low shadows + FXAA on, using that fix, and it is still gorgeous.

Definitely the ultimate version of the game and probably classic RE as a whole, but it lacks a lot of the unintentional b-movie charm of the original, mostly due to a more advanced lighting engine and the revamped script.
There also shouldn't be an option not to use tank controls.

    • @AvalancheReviews

I'm sure there's people out there who would burn me at the stake for the following statement, but...
I just can't get over that most of the tension in this game (and all "classic" RE entries) is the tank controls and inability to actually aim your weapon.
Why does a highly trained, paramilitary SWAT soldier need to aim their shotgun at the ceiling and wait for the shambling undead to walk into the barrel? Are you telling me Chris can't drop the basic zombie type enemies in 2 shots or less when they move at the speed of a broken mall escalator?
It just really takes me out of it. Maybe if they were just a couple of regular people, like Harry and James from Silent Hill, stuck in the mansion it wouldn't be such a big deal.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад +4

I can suspend my disbelief a bit and let that go. I know that the tank controls were just a limitation and a coping mechanism for dealing with so many wildly different camera angles. They just work in my mind. I never had issues with them, but in the same light, I can understand so people having the opposite issue.

New areas to explore, more story to unravel. What's not to love!? I must have played and beat the game a dozen times the first week it was out alone! I still remember beating the mode with the invisible zombie, rigged with explosives lol.

You definitely nailed it with the idea that Survival Horror, and traditional Resident Evil game in general, are really actually puzzle games to their core: the combat itself in the original trilogy was actually very basic and revolved around aiming in the general direction of the enemy and press action repeatedly until the enemy was dead or you had to change position, that and a few particular tactics to take out enemies more efficiently.
What made fighting interesting in the old games was that it was part of the greater system of resource and inventory management, and through the way tank controls worked movement itself became something that required a tactical calculated approach to work properly. Everything in those games was about developing strategies about how and when to use resources (when it was convenient to kill enemies and how it was the most efficient way to do so) while the combat was actually pretty mindless if analyzed by itself.
The nice thing about RE2 Remake is that it somehow successfully managed to bring back the strategic system of play of the original trilogy (down to the very movement. Even though the game doesn't use tank controls it manages to achieve a very similar feeling, Leon and Claire movement is slow and aim receives maluses if one tries to move and shoot, so the most efficient way to play ends up being something pretty close to what we were seeing with tank controls) while also introducing a deeper combat system that comes with being a third person shooter, yet without compromising the former. RE2 Remake manages to make fighting zombies both a strategic decision related with resource management and an interesting combat experience too thanks to the variety of ways you can decide to fight them.
I think that definition of survival horror also kinda highlights how the core of the Resident Evil series doesn't necessarily has something to do with third or first person like you were saying in the episode about RE7: if survival horror is fundamentally a puzzle, why would the puzzle presented through a first person view be invalid? As long as the core of the game remains about the important stuff the point of view shouldn't be that important.

I just want to say I hate Tank Controls. And I actually prefer the more action driven RE games like 4&5

For me re2 remake was good remake in terms of modern age era, personally i would have loved to see with fixed camera and such as original, in other hand re3 remake was bad, very short and bland, lets hope they they remake outbreak series, or continue with outbreak series, as its blast to play it online even today with friends.

@@Krahamus it had ups and downs my biggest gripe of RE2 was that scenario B didn't vary as the original did. So whoever you play in the first act would later differ in the next scenario. Re3, there's at least a huge paragraph so I'll save that for later lol.

Resident Evil(especially part 1 (plus remake) and Code Veronica), Elder Scrolls IV:Oblivion, Silent Hill, Onimusha 2 and Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen(1+2) were the most influential games for me back then...! But i also was impressed and very entertained by Jak & Daxter, Devil May Cry, Legend of Zelda-A link to the past and KOTOR 1+2! Good old times and sweet memories...!

That talk about RE being a puzzle can be applied to a lot of games really.
For example, stealth games are basically puzzle games with different ways to "solve" their "puzzles" by no getting spotted.
Play any stealth game from Metal Gear to Deus Ex and you'll see that there is usually always more than one way to do anything and they all work as a way to solve problems.

I've had a few comments saying something similar, and I think that there's some truth there. I think those games rely a little more on skilled gameplay, where RE is more about decision making (at least at the higher difficulty levels). RE has pretty clunk controls, so there's less skill involved after you've wrapped your head around them. At least that's my point of view.

The remake of Resident Evil is a true classic! This game is now 20 years old, and its gameplay and graphics still hold up today! I'd argue the remake remains one of the most beautifully looking games of all time. This remake has aged like a fine Italian wine!

I have to say i love the retrospective videos. before this i had only played the newer RE games but these videos got me to pick up a copy of the origins collection for PS4 and I just finished my first play through of REmake. I dont know if it has been mentioned already but i would love to see a Metal Gear Solid Retrospective.

It took me years to love Remake . I was 7 when I beat the original trilogy and remake was a learning curve for me but now I beat it without issue. Great review man and seeing the notification for this is always a pleasure . Have you ever thought of talking about the censorship in the resident evil series like how Re7 in Japan is censored and had to have the grotesque version come out?

Absolutely agree with you about classic RE being a giant puzzle game. Every mechanic in the game; the shooting, inventory management, exploration, the actual puzzles, even the story.. are all just pieces to the larger puzzle.

Even the combat. You have to strategically use sparse weapons and ammo. Blow through your stock and leave too many monsters alive, and you'll make the game virtually unwinnable.
Like those old text adventure or point and click games, where one wrong move and the game can't be beaten.

@@AvalancheReviews when I was a kid/teen playing them, I knew there was something I liked that went deeper than just the gruesome imagery and killing monsters. I enjoyed all the bits in between as well. Wasn't until I think REmake that i figured it out. That all the pieces compliment each other to make a multilayered puzzle. Something the later games lost sight of.. but came back with 7. But I still enjoyed 4-6. Lol
