      I have a 2020 Charger with their 6 cylinder. Puts out 292 horsepower which you can't consider it to be muscle car power but still, it goes 0 - 60 in 6.5 seconds which is faster than a lot of the old 440's from the 60's and 70's but the bonus us that it gets better gas mileage than the two 4 cylinder cars I also have. Those are rated at 32 mpg on the highway, both get around 27-28. My Charger is rated at 30 mpg and gets 31-33 and that's even climbing through the Blue Ridge Mountains. So I'll be keeping an eye out for the 2025 Chargers with the Twin-Turbo Inline-Six.

    I had a few of the old Highway Patrol cars. The first was a ‘69 Dodge Polara, which was a “real’ interceptor car. It was fitted with the 440 Magnum HP2 engine, meaning that it shared the same bottom end as the 440 6-Pack muscle cars. It was black and white, with spot lights, rubber floor mats, vinyl seats, a big reading lamp, and a standard item all police cars come with, a rear window defogger. It still had a shotgun rack in the trunk. The car was a blast to drive, even with a Sure Grip rear end, it would leave rubber all the way up the street. It was faster than the mid-80’s 5.0 Mustangs I used to play with.
    The next car was an ‘80 Dodge St Regis, which was an interesting car. The big-blocks had disappeared by that time, but my St Regis (a former Washington State Patrol car) was equipped with the E58 “high performance” 360 V8 engine. Unfortunately, “high performance” in 1980 wasn’t very high. I improved the performance by adding 340 2.02 heads, an LD-340 intake manifold, a new Erson cam (I had a few chats with Sig Erson back in the day), 340 exhaust manifolds from a Dodge Dart (the car needed to pass smog), better cats from newer Dodge V6 mini vans, and Flowmaster mufflers. Under the hood the car looked box stock, though the “Lean Burn” system was disabled, and a standard electronic ignition system hidden in the original housings. This was the funnest car I had, unfortunately, it suffered a gas leak and burned to the ground right in front of the Anaheim police department.
    The last one I had was an ‘87 5.0 Mustang CHP car. It had a 5 speed, manual windows, and no stereo system. It was a fun car, and one which I had always wanted to have. I did some light mods to it (mass air conversion), but otherwise it was fine the way it was.

    Those Chargers/Challengers are no joke! I rented a Challenger a few years ago while one of my Grand Prix's was in the shop. I only kept it a few days and didn't really beat on it (much).
    A few years ago I was on the highway at 70+ and passing a line of slower cars in the right lane. Looked up in my mirror and all I could see was pushbar about 4' behind me! Got over and the GSP (Georgia State Patrol) in one took off like he was shot out of a cannon!
    Interestingly, one of my local PD had a few 1999 Grand Prix GTPs similar to mine. Supercharged 3.8L Buick V6. Theirs were 4-door and loaded down with equipment. They used them for highway pursuit. They had an "open house" and car show one day and I pulled in with mine. Cops came over and we talked. I asked them if they had clipped the speed limiter and they grinned. The factory speed limiter is set at 135 to keep from exceeding the stock tires limit (mine, and theirs, are upgraded). I've seen vids of them with the limiter "removed" go 155!
    They destroyed theirs and I still have mine!

Jay is 74 years old, has had two health set backs since the pandemic, and his wife is dealing with dementia related issues. This is a sad day 😢. When I was a LEO we drove the most horrible early 80's Ford LTD Crown Vics. They would overheat, they didn't handle well, the quality was...questionable and the interiors were very uncomfortable for officers wearing duty belts. It was embarrassing to drive those cars but the department only bought new models when they were forced to. Police today have no idea how good they have it for vehicles. These Chargers are so sweet compared to even recent past police cars, I'm truly sad to see these go.
    Today I can't even afford a car and I wouldn't accept one of those LTD Crown Vics if it were free lol. I keep saying it but it's so sad the Charger and Challenger are being killed. My dream car became the Challenger when I saw them first released and every year they seemed to get better and better. Big loud overhead lights that you had to sometimes get out and do the 'ol "rotator bang" with your hand to get them unstuck. No luxuries at all. I was given a flashlight, gun, badge and clipboard and told to go enforce the law. Had a few 93, 95 vics. 150k miles was a good car in the fleet. I had an 05, 08 vics. All vics overheated on traffic accidents. Had 2014 charger, a 2020 and now a 2022 Ford Explorer. Current car is a Cadillac compared to my first patrol cars. The last 10 years as a LEO has been vastly different than the first 14.... lol. Yeah.. the rookies have no idea how easy they have it on cars, however... being a LEO today isnt really that fun anymore and I feel for these guys. Im only 5 years away from hanging it up with a 30 pension.... when I first started, I may have had crap vehicles but we could actually be police. Today, we are glorified security guards. No pursuit policies, anything more than handcuffs is a use of force investigation, and every arrest requires 2+ hours at the hospital for a fit slip to take them to county jail if they so much as have a scrape or a cough. "Paper Law Enforcement." That basically all we do these days is push paper. There is no actual catching of criminals anymore.

    “But we do make sure we don’t have any high speed cut offs for any of the chases.” I hope he means just the last year. Because the 2006-2009 were limited to 131mph, which is pathetic. My car with the same engine and such pulls incredibly hard right up to 130 and then just stops pulling past 131. It’s a strange feeling. The power is certainly there, but it is computer limited. Later on they raised the limit to 151 for select agencies. I have used a tuner to raise the limit on my car, and then it sailed right past 131 but I let off at 140 because of other risks, like not the best tires, and other conditions, like traffic, road surface, etc. I will say that when I upgraded my suspension and included the huge 32mm front sway bar, high speed performance handling went through the roof. It was fine and dandy at 120mph before. Now, it feels like the whole thing was made to go 125 all day long. The number one attribute of these cars, as far as performance goes, is what the police departments call “closing speed”. Which is the time it takes to catch up with speeding drivers. Of note is that the Ford Explorer PPV with twin turbo eco boost has a better 0-60 time AND higher top end speed. But from 65-too speed, it’s a dog, and takes much longer to reach 130 than the Chargers do. I can understand why they would limit civilian cars, but why do that to PPVs?

    Awesome! I bought a 1969 Illinois Plymouth Fury Police Interceptor, copper color, in 1971. I tore out the front bench seat, re-carpeted it, and installed bucket seats from a Challenger. Finally, I upgraded the radio and speakers. It had a 383, with a high rise manifold, Holly carb, dual exhaust, a high stall transmission, and limited slip differential. It was built like a tank, with lots of non-standard parts. Whenever I replaced parts I would always halve to take the part off the car to compare it at the parts store to make sure it was the same. When I replaced the U joints, the Plymouth’s bearings were tiny compared to the ones I took off. I ended up taking home U joints from a heavy duty pickup truck. My favorite car of the past 53 years.

    Hearing about the US requirements for a police car absolutely boggles my mind. Here in the UK, the vast majority of our police cars are 130hp Peugeot 308 SW's with a 1.6 diesel engine. The contrast is unreal and I envy the US for getting all these cool cars at an affordable price to the average consumer, when the same cars imported over to my country would nearly cost as much as a house in most parts of the country.

      Our police cars are better than the US, look at what traffic police drive compared to the Ford explorer or even these chargers. Volvo, BMW, Audis etc. the US doesn’t have local policing like we do either so they aren’t going to need basic patrol vehciles. The forces get very attractive pricing on vehciles and the government could have supplied the entire nation with BMW’s for less but it was decided not to as it might be perceived as wasteful spending.

    • @SuperJ213
      @SuperJ213 Месяц назад

      This probably varies all around the county, but the only thing different that I'm accustomed to is Code 1 means drive normally to a non-emergency (as a general rule). I've heard that some agencies prohibit code 2 (logic being that if it's important enough for lights, then you should be using the siren, too). That being said, I believe it's common that cops can typically exceed the speed limit without lights or siren under certain circumstances. I believe this gets some people upset because they think the cop is simply speeding for no reason. For example, it's pretty common to run code 3 to a family fight but cut the siren (and sometimes the lights) as you get close to the location.
