After Capcom's recent remake of Resident Evil 2, all the rumors pointed towards them remaking RE3 next and that put a smile on my face. Part 3 being one of my more criticized entries in the series, I figured it could do with a nice refresh. Well it's finally out so let's see if the big C can keep up the great work. Also, big thanks to Jeff Schine (the voice of Carlos) for sitting down and talking to me.

The problem with Nemesis showing so early it's that he looks way less effective than his original counterpart.
In the original, he accomplish his main objective as part of his introduction, killing S.T.A.R.S. right in front of your eyes, killing the terrified Brad Vickers in a gruesome glorious way.
In the remake you just see him failing at trying to kill Jill once and again the whole intro, and he doesn't even get to kill Brad because some random zombies chew on him first. So this depiction of Nemesis killed 0 S.T.A.R.S. members.

You are of course 100 per cent correct, but I think this is part of a problem. My biggest problem (and his goes into modern writing of film and games alike) is they have completely emasculated The Nemesis and over stated Jills bad assnes. for instance smashing through the wall at the start yet failing to kill her, instead opting to throw her aside. (power without competence) Carlos and Jill throwing out quips (like Fuck face etc) took the impact out as no one is actually scared of him. As you pointed out, failing to kill Brad (I dont need to expand on your point, excellently put). Failing to kill Jill several times despite having her bang to rights. Mutating him into a monster way to early and less subtly boiled him down to little more than an animal. Its a modern trope with media with Female leads, making the (normally male) antagonist weak to make the the protagonist stronger by comparison. They totally robbed Nemesis of any power making the chase and boss fights more annoying than tense, Poorly done

My favorite action horror game ever is Dead Space 2. Hands down. The game is nearly flawless in my eyes. It's on the short side as well. I can do a playthrough in less than 3 hours. But if my greatest criticism is that I wish there was more of it then is that really a criticism? Plus if you're playing the games once then you're doing it wrong. These games scream multiple playthroughs. I normally play Dead Space 2 three times before I've had my fill.

And you realize, just as you see Raccoon City's vista with the Clock Tower in the background, and understand how vast this game could be, that there will be no Clock Tower and no more outdoor Raccoon City, and no more Nemesis in his humanoid form. the problems with missing content also impact the story in kind of a big way. first of all Nikolai. in the original game he's a monitor working for Umbrella and his job is to record combat data on all of the BOWs, collect samples of them, and destroy evidence of Umbrella's crimes. Jill discovers this when she finds Nikolai's safe house in the park(which is missing from the remake). in the remake though we never really find out anything about Nikolai or what he's doing. he's seemingly recording the combat data and covering up Umbrella's crimes just like the original but at the end of the game he says that his employer wanted him to destroy Umbrella which means that his actions throughout the game don't really make sense. also in the original Nikolai escapes on the helicopter leaving Jill and Carlos for dead but they're rescued by Barry. that changed in the remake, instead what happens is Nikolai beats up Carlos and waits for Jill to arrive just to taunt her. they beat up Nikolai and leave him for dead. why didn't Nikolai just leave when he had the chance?
the other thing is the Dead Factory which was an important location for the story of RE2&3. in RE2 Birkin is evacuating his lab with samples of the T and G viruses because he cut a deal with the US government to testify against Umbrella and provide evidence of their crimes. the location of his evacuation is the Dead Factory where a Delta Force unit is waiting for him(this is why there's a helicopter there) Birkin doesn't make the meeting because he's confronted by Hunk's USS soldiers. in the original RE2 the helicopter that deploys Mr. X has five other canisters on it, these five other tyrants are deployed at Dead Factory to take out the Delta Force unit there. we see the aftermath of that battle when Jill goes to the Dead Factory. also the rail gun that she uses to defeat Nemesis was brought there by Delta Force to deal with those five tyrants. all of that is gone in the remake.

1 - Nicholai works for another contractor interested in Umbrella’s work. That’s why he gathers data and doesn’t get in the way of Jill fighting Nemesis. He’s also tasked with destroying anything related to Umbrella after the fact.
2 - The Tyrant this time isn’t delivered by chopper, they’re made in Raccoon City as evidenced by the Tyrant pods in NEST 2. Only Nemesis was dropped in because he was manufactured by Umbrella Europe, as always.
3 - The rail gun was changed to be an internal countermeasure against rogue BOWs. It makes more sense IMO, but that’s subjective.

In terms of content, one of the most awkward things in R3make is the inclusion of a file that seemed to be setting up the Clock Tower area right before the second big Nemesis boss fight. It's a file that explains the backstory and in-universe function of the Clock Tower's internal building design, much like REmake 2's file on the police station being a former museum. But the Clock Tower itself ends up not appearing, only being referenced by the optional gem puzzle in the first city section and featuring as a background element in the second Nemesis boss area. It seems to have been a casualty of time constraints, given the evidence, and that's a shame, because it does feel like the game's structure is missing one more notable explorative area on the Jill Valentine side of the gameplay (the Hospital serves as the game's second big explorative area as the sewers did in REmake 2, but that's chiefly a Carlos segment here with Jill optionally retreading it afterward for item cleanup).
So the game's structure comes off a bit unbalanced and incomplete to me compared to REmake 2, which was very much focused around this "one big explory area, series of relatively smaller areas, second big explory area, and laboratory finale" structure that, notably, Resident Evil Village actually shares. (There, the "RPD Station" is the castle and the "sewer area" is the Factory, with the dollmaker's house and reservoir serving as the in-betweener, more contained and straightforward segments).
The absence of the Clock Tower is a bit unfortunate because of the areas from the original RE3 that are missing in action, it's the most substantial one. RE3 had a lot of cool setpieces but they mostly stood as level design chunks that I could take or leave and as transitional pieces between the game's more important areas, and while missing those locations is unfortunate, they weren't exactly integral to RE3's big-picture design the way the Clock Tower was.
If they ever do a special-edition re-release of R3make, I'd like to see them re-implement the Clock Tower, at the very least. I will say that directly entering NEST 2 through the hospital makes a lot of narrative sense here, but is also just more boring visually and gameplay-wise than the means by which Jill gained entrance to the Factory area in RE3.

RE7's Jack mechanics were tweaked and turned into RE2make's Mr. X, which was tweaked into RE3make's Nemesis. So I wonder, what was the purpose of Nemesis' new head-tentacle zombie transformations in 3? If you think about it, those tentacles moved and attacked you just like RE4's plagas parasites. Why include that new mechanic just for a stripped down RE3 campaign? Maybe for RE4make a few years down the line.

Oh come on, that's the worst example and you're using it to confirm a point.
There's other choices that effect gameplay. LIke the cable car crash decides in what order you need to do the clock tower, and how the nemesis fight plays out.
The bridge before the Waste Disposal Facility, pushing nemesis or jumping off decides what order you do the Facility in, and decides the fate of Nicholai, who can potentially survive.
Also yeah, meeting Carlos in 2 different locations may be extremely similar. But based on replay value, discovering new cutscenes was part of the fun of RE3. Especially when you're gathering items for the cable car. Nicholai, Murphy, Carlos and Nemesis turn up in different places depending on the order.

I'm only going to point out the things I disagree with in this video, everything else can be taken as me agreeing with.
    Part 1 of 2
I think the biggest disapointment isn't the length but the overall design elements, specifically Nemesis and the world areas you move through from a gameplay perspective. While you mention that Nemesis really wants to kill Jill from the outset, it completely destroyed my sense of tension when in every cutscene Nemesis has a opportunity to kill Jill in an instant due to the choreography of the scenes, all he does is toss her aside and give her a chance to run away, not even sprinting after her or trying to follow up with an attack. It's ironic because whenever a character besides Jill is in the way, he kills them instantly even from 25 feet away but when it comes to the person he is apparently trying to kill, he just toys with her again and again. This isn't helped by the actual gameplay given that on Hardcore, the highest difficulty available at the start, he is downed by a whole ONE grenade (which the game kindly gives you before he show up if you are actually collecting the items like most people would), two flaming barrels or if playing on Nightmare a couple of Magnum rounds which you get at the start, making him a big push over, not counting the electrical boxes setup conviniently in almost every location he appears in that stop him in his tracks for 10 seconds or more.
Thats only if you decide to fight him of course, and given how he rarely does anything but walk at you (he seems to only start sprinting at you even on Nightmare only after 10 seconds of walking, which given how this game structures encounters is more than enough to to leave him behind) so long as you keep moving forward you are fine. In the first city section he might spider-man in front of you, but given dodging is so easy in this game and you could argue its way too good, you can easily dodge the punch he throws and now you are back ahead of him without him being a threat at all.
The real problem design wise though is the way Nemesis actually works, or doesn't. I think the use of the term scripted isn't helpful describing Nemesis because there being triggers for him to appear is fine and expected. A better term to describe Nemesis is non-dynamic, not in his spawning but in his behaviour, let me explain. Given Jared said he was avoiding anything pre-release I don't know if he played the demo, but for those who did it's kinda crazy to think that the only part of the city that you get to actually freely explore is the same part that is in the demo. The only addition in the full game is an alleyway that leads to the power station building and the spider den. The way back from the power building, to the subway control building, then to the subway itself is also the only section that has Nemesis actually follow you in a dynamic and non scripted way (behaviour wise) where he will spider man himself in front of you, follow you through buildings and around the map etc (like Mr. X did). From the power building to the subway control building and back to the subway itself, it's only around a 5-7 minute trip.
The only way to make it longer with Nemesis chasing you is to not pick up or unlock any doors before nemesis appears after clearing the spider den, and then go around unlocking everything while he is chasing you. Then it can be around a 15-20 minute section. That is by far the most fun and engaging section of the game if you do that.
After that his behaviour changes as does the design of the encounters, it unfortunately becomes sections where he "chases you" down linear corridors and all you have to do is hold forward and maybe have to dodge the occasional attack (if Nemesis decides to get of his ass and actually try to kill you) until the next cutscene when it's either a boss fight or he disappears. The problem with these sections is that theres no real danger or tension unless I decided to let go of the forward button for some stupid reason. The game just plays itself, you don't have to react to or make any decisions and there is no core gameplay elements, it's basically a cutscene but I have to strain my finger while watching it. Take the scene where you climb the builidng while Nemesis burns it from the ground up. Sounds awesome and visually it looks great as everything does in this game, however all that amounts to gameplay wise is holding forward from the moment Nemesis grabs you out of the Sewer (and doesn't incinerate you giving you a chance to run) all the way to the boss fight. It's not like you have to fight him off while climbing or make any decisions even about what resources you to use V.S not use while you get away from him, the only threat is if you take your thumb off the stick because it hurts. It's hold forward while a pretty looking Uncharted scary climbing section plays out.
This even goes back as far as the intro, where instead of for instance the game giving you control where you try and shoot Nemesis, learn to dodge, learn how the core gameplay loop works while getting yourself out of the building and away from Nemesis, you know like if it was a video game.... the intro is just a big cutscene for the most part where you do little to no actual playing aside from holding forward (sometimes they even restrict your camera movement) or QTE's while it all looks pretty and Nemesis tries kill you in the most inefficient ways possible (the concrete wall scraping scene being the most hilarious one)
Unfortunely this isn't a one off, every subsequent Nemesis encounter after the Power station to Subway stretch works the exact same way. Nemesis appears with a rocket launcher behind me, just hold forward and move a few inches left or right when the light goes red until the next cutscene (the most pathetic rocket launcher ever). Even when you return to the first city part with the toystore when he has the launcher, the devs kindly closed off all the previously acessible areas and buildings so if you left any items or unexplored rooms you are out of luck, and now only have a linear corridor back to the subway station for the next cutscene.
Nemesis also just isn't in the game much, aside from the listed encounter problems there also aren't very many, maybe thats why they removed the Nemesis subtitle from the game. I mean I'm pretty sure he spends more time in generic monster dog form than Humanoid form.

      Part 2 of 2
This lack of an open or hub kind of world setup extends to the regular gameplay also, ultimately no section comes close to the RPD in 2 Remake either in depth of design or length. A lot of locations in this game you just teleport to after cutscenes. You don't have to move through the city to arrive at RPD as Carlos, you just arrive there in a cutscene. Same with Jill after the train, it's two very small rooms then you are at the Clocktower boss fight. Then once again, after that exact fight you teleport to the Hospital. This gives the game a much less intergrated and immersive feel, unlike RE2R where you actually move through each of these locations cementing them within the world space. If RE3R had 2 more sections the size of the first area where you had to find keys, and move through the city to get to the RPD and Hospital sections with an open hub-style world map I think that would have massively helped the break-neck pacing of this game and given you some down-time, providing contrast to all the action packed boss fights, explosions and insane stunts. Ideally all the locations would have been intergrated and added to the first areas map and you unlocked them as you advanced through the game with new key items while the previous areas changed to provide new gameplay opportunites.
I've seen many people comment that this is RE3 as directed by Micheal Bay while I don't agree with that 100% I can see why.
I don't think this game has more post-game content than RE2R does. One campaign, one unlockable costume (where the original game had 8), 2 extra difficulty modes (One that changes enemy placement from base game, and i think it's mostly padding that you have to finish the game once on hardcore to unlock the NM and then again to unlock Inferno, in RE2 you could play the hardest mode from the outset if you wanted to besides the fact that Hardcore in RE3R is mode like normal mode than RE2 Hardcore) 3 weapons, the infinite weapons and a bunch of cheat items to make the game easier. Personally I don't see a reason to use cheats to do more damage or have more health when the game is lacking challenge anyway, and playing on Nightmare just to knock the difficulty back down to Normal or Hardcore seems to defeat the point, but maybe that is just me.
RE2R had the 4th Survivor, Tofu etc, 2 slightly longer Campaigns with different events, items and locations regardless of difficulty, 2 additional campaigns with minor changes from the first two (new starting locations, items, paths and guns for each) and 2 unlockable costumes. There is also really small detail discrepancies for some reason, like RE2 model viewer having animations and RE3's being static. It certainly gives the impression that elements of this game were rushed.
I don't think length or linearity are this games problems, as all RE games are linear but the difference is that something like RE2R has the propensity for more unique gameplay situations that can vary wildly from playthrough to playthrough specifically through RPD. Mr.X is a big part of this, not because he is a direct threat all the time but because he forces the player to make decisions they otherwise wouldn't have to make (multiple video essasy have mentioned this). This game doesn't have an equivalent of that, beyond the first encounter with Nemesis.
i know Jared didn't like Mr.X too much, so maybe he is glad about that but i think for lots of people it was a core aspect of the previous game.
I like this game overall, I think it's good, but its none the less disapointing compared to RE2R, RE3 original or just anything they could have done outside of the context of those games which is why I didn't keep comparing it to those 2 games much at all.
The best description I have seen of this game is that it's a Universal Studioes theme park of all of the highlights of RE3, you get a small bit of this and that, just the major exciting bits and then you instantly move onto the next ride.
Other than those strong disagreements, a great video as always.
Thanks to anyone who actually read all this.

I loved R3make to death for what it is, but, because of the elements you highlighted, it lacks both as a "sequel" to RE2R and as a remake of Nemesis. I thought of this game more like a spinoff than an actual main game at the end of my first playthrough, reminding me of Umbrella Chronicles' truncation of stroy events and gameplay. It was still awesome to experience, though, and I am enjoying Resistance a lot.

Bro I read both parts you wrote and you summed it up perfectly. Except for the first part all the other parts with nemesis felt like a movie except you have to hold forward on the left stick to watch it. Even not taking nemesis into account there are still so many problems like the fact that the sewers are 2 FRIGGEN HALLWAYS, one where there is a key item, and one where there is a grenade launcher; and it doesn't even matter if you get the grenade launcher or not because if you don't the game will give it to you regardless before that second nemesis boss fight. Also, the drained deimos are in the game for one 10 minute section and then never seen from again...like what? Why did you put effort into giving them unique gameplay mechanics like the parasite? I think most of the enemies are designed well mechanics wise but there's not enough content for them to be spread around in.

    BAD CHANGES
    - Jill not going to RPD
-Yeah, Carlos goes instead and we get to see the Pre-RE2 layout. But missed opportunity of having Jill going to the RPD for the last time. Also, pretty sure Nemesis was suppose to bust through that wall but they changed it to subvert our expectations.
    -Clock Tower section cut
-I can't really comment, it's just a missing section, but I guess they replaced the Helicopter rescue point with "This train gets us out of the city" so the reason for going to the clock tower was removed from the plot.
    - Tentacle Nemesis cut
-Don't mind the new 2nd phase nemesis but wish we could've had both.
    -Reducing the City section.
-Was Hoping for a larger, open worldish thing. Uptown/Downtown from original was bigger, had more to do and could be tackled in varying orders. But I assume they made the progression more linear for a more consistent plot. RE3 (1999) was a bit canonically ambiguous because of how many events could happen in different playthroughs.
-But yeah, The Train only requiring 1 thing instead of 3. Original had us doing the classic 4 item fetch quest that could be done in any order. With the side effect of having various different cutscenes as a result.
-Adding on. The Original could be broken into 6 levles: Uptown, Downtown > Clocktower, Hospital > Park, Facility. Remake has feels like it has less levels overall.
-I noticed that a lot of the streets were interconnected with each other but the blocked off by debris, cars, boxes and other stuff.
-In some points of the game, passages would be unblocked, or become blocked due to scripting. This is very undermining to the player and exploration potential of raccoon city
-An improvement I would offer is to unblock most blockages and allow exploration and for the city to be tackled in more varying orders. Hell, have the key items change locations based on difficulty or what order you visit places in. The current method is too linear. In RE3 (1999) you had to get multiple keys to progress (Gems and then Tram parts) and could do them in any order, with unique cutscenes occuring depending on how you tackle it.
    -Brad Vickers
    -What the fuck....
-They cut out the most iconic scene from the original. Indefensible.
    - Nemesis being more scripted.
-He should've been an upgrade to Mr X but failed in that regard.
-Even know he's a harder fight than Mr X, his presence is undermined by the linearness and the scripting of the new City segment.
-As stated above in my opinions of the city section, if the streets for more open, having Nemesis patrol around would've been brilliant. Just like Mr.X patrolled the RPD.
    -Bin Bag Nemesis
    -State of your clothes mate.
    -Barry, where's Barry?
-Well I'm sorry but he's probably....
    -no...
    GOOD CHANGES
    -Carlos
-He feels like a real person. Like someone who you'd want to come back in a sequal whereas 1999 Carlos became a "oh yeah... Carlos, wonder what he's doing."
-The redesign, the writing and the acting for the new Carlos is great.
    -Tyrell
-He went from a minor character with 4 lines of dialog to a fleshed out character that's likeable and gives personality to the UBCS.
    -Mikhail
    - I like him better in this.
    -Nicholai
-Don't know what I prefer, 1999 or 2020, but the actor did a bang up job here. He had a good balance of being antagonistic and being cartoon villain. It's like a mix of Outbreak and ORC.
    -Hospital
-I liked how this section was more than just a "here's the Carlos section", being able to revisit it as Jill before progressing and being rewarded for remember the locks and searching rooms a second time was nice. Shame RPD didn't get the same treatment.
    -The Music
-The soundtrack is brilliant, good use of the original soundtrack being implemented and remixed into the new one, along with original tracks to boot. I fanboy'd when I heard the Metamorphosis theme during the final boss.
    - The cheesy Rail Cannon scene.
-We're entering RE5 levels of bollocks here. Honestly, I enjoy the campyness of the series. Yes even the boulder punching. So seeing Jill carrying an oversized railgun with ease whilst telling Nemesis to "Take the fucking hint" is just gold to me. Like it more than "I'll give you S.T.A.R.S", Sorry.
    APATHY CHANGES
    - Gravedigger Cut
-It was a crap boss in my opinion.
    - Kendo and Marvin
-Their contribution to the game was fan service. And honestly, what we saw of them in the trailer is pretty much all we got. Wish there was more but Original didn't have them. So it exceeds expectation. Think the trailer was a bit cheeky though.
    -Park being Cut
-It felt like busy work to me to be honest, a transitional area that had a go that way, locked, go back, key, fight, go back to lock, next area. Like we just did that in the clock tower.
-I guess the use for the park as the transitional level between Clocktower and the Disposal Facility was pointless when they turned the facility into NEST2 and made the hospital the link and a longer level.
-1 fond memory of RE3 and the Park was how adaptive difficulty worked in that area. Sometimes you got worms and zombies. Others you'd get Hunters and Hunter Gammas
    NEST2
    - It's a good level. Though the entire time i was playing I was thinking "This would've been a great Scenario B area for RE2"

24:22 using the worst choice in the game to dismiss the whole replay variation in the game is cheap. Like there's stuff like Murphy's death, Nikolai's fate, the order you do certain levels and Nemesis fights that get affected depending on the order you do things and the choices you make. Cutscenes may have been similar but doing the game in a different order + RNG of some item placements added a lot to the OG using very little.

I agree that the game is fun, but there are quite a few issues I had with the game. The lack of puzzles and the smaller feeling of the locations, it was nice for the pace, I suppose but it never was fully satisfying for me. I really was excited for the clocktower and an expanded city.
Nemesis introduction and presence was another, the crazy over the top chase in the apartment was no where near as memorable as him jumping down and killing Brad in front of the RPD. Then that kind of echoes into a lot of the action scenes, it felt too Uncharted. Nicholai was another, I prefered his cold kinda robotic manner in the original, it made sense for him to be that way for all the shit he was doing. I like the way he was portrayed in the Remake as well, just not as much.
I agree that new Carlos is great, he was my favorite character in this game. The expanded Hospital was another great part, really enjoyed it. Overall it's a good game, but there are just some off things for me and I totally understand the reluctance and criticisms out there.

Can't agree with you on Nikolai or Carlos or Nemesis. I played every RE game and the original 3 was just a short as this game, the only difference was how long it took you to obtain the gems to get to the trolley and put the fire out and gas station and so on to get the trolley fixed before clocktower boss battle and then hospital vaccine run and then just a park puzzle that wasnt much ot a puzzle but more to show off the Gammas and then the dead factory puzzle that was actually hard.
The dead factory and park can be summed up by the warehouse and lab section.
The only true thing missing is going inside the gas station and offices and last but not least the clocktower. Wish they had kept Uptown explorable oh well. The remake was fun and short as was the original. Nemesis not being there all the time was actually a good decision as a Nemesis that would be as persistent as 2020's Nemesis would've been an annoyance on Nightmare and Inferno.
The game feels like it was designed around replayability on speed runs and the two added difficulties, that's just my two cents.

One question I did have, just based on curiosity is why do you shoot the enemies so much in the legs? I have not played these games yet so I am not sure if there is a gameplay reason, but I always found that interesting as I assume ammo is important and you generally want to go for the kills right? The problem with Nemesis is not that he's scripted. Problem is that the ONLY area where he actually stalks and follows you - the first part of the game. After you turn on the train station, Nemesis is gone. You only get short chase scenes or boss arena battles. He doesn't stand on the way of your objective like mr. X did, you don't have to take a long routes to be more safe away from him while you have to solve puzzles, get items or do your stuff. There's no that feeling of terror that's constantly on your tail cause every time you meet Nemesis you know it's just up until the next door where you trigger cutscene and he's gone again

    • @subrussian
      @subrussian 4 года назад +1

@Dominic dominic first of all he was not, he appeared WAY more often than mr. X in original RE2, yet they made him much more threatening in RE2 remake. And even if it was the same in original - it's 20 years since then, maybe it's time to improve stuff? Just for example, imagine if Nemesis could appear in police station or hospital? closed areas where you actually had to backtrack and collect keys and do stuff. If they'd randomise spots where he could or could not appear throughout the whole game and you'd never know if he's gonna be here on this playthrough. That would be much better than 1 area with stalking, 3 chasing sequences and 4 boss arenas.

The animation problems you spoke of with the zombies behind the fence is a Level of Detail on the animation itself, this usually changes with the actual mesh LOD to keep everything consistent. Given the small area being rendered and the backlighting present this is definitely more obvious than the rest of the game from what I've seen. I imagine these are all instances of each other too, so specific LOD settings for those particular zombos probably haven't been changed to save loading unique assets in where necessary. You're rarely that far away throughout the rest of the game with corridors or corners etc. It's unfortunate that the scene is captured as a bit of a story beat with those minor issues, but still looks great! RE2make was actually scary and tense and the fact that it felt longer and more content-filled imo completely has to do with the actual survival-horror focus of the gameplay (particularly on hardcore aka the real way to play, ~*imo*~). RE3Make is a non-scary action game that hurtles you forward 24/7 in a rushed hollywood manner.
Love your videos haha; it’s funny how I range from 100% agreeing with your takes to 0% lol. Still appreciate them all regardless

Luke TennisMofo that’s the point of RE3 Nemesis. It’s not meant to be RE2. It is it’s own game and In order to fully appreciate the game, you can’t look at it and compare he second to the third. It is clear what pace they are going for within the first 10 minutes of the game.

Hmmmm, RE3 wasn’t scary first time around. This felt like a modern reimagining to me. RE2 was scarier and hence why it was reimagined that way.

Try nightmare or inferno and tell me it's not scary with Nemesis 2 shotting you while surrounded by dogs and pale heads, that can match anything RE2R threw at you.

Kade Hayes I don’t have the timestamp, sorry, but there’s a point in Avalanche’s review where he compares RE3’s pace to RE2’s favorably. I am disagreeing with that. Not that RE3’s pace sucks in a vacuum (I believe that as well but wasn’t the point I was making).

@@lIDeadMan07 you mean it ended up not meaning to look like an RE game too right?
Rush forward from checkpoint to checkpoint like many average FPS games out there is what u can describe about this game.
An RE game without puzzles, backtracking and survivor element?? How can it be called an RE game??

You keep going on about how great the pacing is and i can't help but shake my head.
If there is one aspect about this game that i hate more than the cut content it's the breakneck pace. You never spend more than 15-20 minutes in the same area, you very rarely have to backtrack, if the game even allows it. My benchmark for all Resident Evil titles, past and future, will always be the tone and mood of the original Resident Evil. Going down a hallway with 4 doors. One is locked, one is open and has a puzzle you can't solve yet, one is open with an enemy and some supplies and one gets you the puzzle item you need to solve in room 2 so you can get the key to open door 1 which gets you a key to open a door on the other side of the level which triggers an event that sends you back to a different area that you passed a couple times before.
But the real shame is that there is no more environment descriptions when pressing the interact key at an object.

The biggest problem I have with both re2 and re3 remake is that they both do not push the narrative forward like RE:remake did. They had a huge chance to repave the messy story that the saga becomes as time goes on.

I keep finding myself coming back to RE3 playing with new requirements (trying different guns or load outs with the coins) and I think it's very replayable. Hope we get DLC too like RE2 did

I prefer games that dont overstay their welcome, although the cut content is disappointing. Playing the game with different weapons as quick as possible makes it a bit better.

For me the unforgivable sin is the lack of St. Michael's. Not the gameplay, the story beat. Also, yes, the pace is SUPER fun. The problem though is it shows that all these decades later, they still don't get the value of Raccoon City as its own character.
As well done as it is, trading out the Dead Factory with its world-expanding Delta Force vs Mr. X battle with the "NEST 2" was definitely a bad '90's game sequel mistake.
Not recreating the intro and slacking on redoing the scope of the nuke cutscene was also disappointing.
Finally, not being as good of a period piece for the late '90's (weapons and computers) and going with the "things going to shit in a single day" trope that the original and REvil 2make managed to avoid stops it from being a killer remake. Why do the makers fear showing the city? Only OG Nemesis (and Outbreak) seemed to really treat the city with respect and make it feel like a sorta-real place.
The acting is UNBELIEVABLY good and the OST remix is also super fun. Totally agree about the Kendo blue-balls. Him, Dario, and Brad. Because of the missing world-building, city character and intro/clocktower story beats I will have to wait for the first price drop. But it is DEFINITELY a good, fun game I will buy. Just disappointing. Who knows, maybe they can fix my desire with some good DLC that does some real expansion? A UBCS/final stand of the RPD and clock tower chopper LZ defense pack? Then it will be "shut-up and take my money".

18:50 You are in the minority. Part of what made RE great were the puzzles. They went full on action with this game and eliminated effectively everything required any stance of brain power.

I think you underestimate the illusion of choice and change of scenery. Like getting an alternate costume. It can really make an experience feel fresh. In 2, starting from the back of the police station really made a difference. It's the possibility of getting lost and not immediately knowing the clear path that's intriguing.
Yes of course, Nemesis as to be scripted to a degree but once he does spawn he can follow you from room to room and pop up again. It's true that the randomness could be annoying but this game could have figured that out like remake 2 did.
Ennemies in two needed to be more resilient to compensate for their smaller numbers. If they didn't the game would be boring or like this and 4 you would need more ennemies.
Great, the granular look in two wasn't just me. I also cared about the lighting.

Your review/retrospective of this game has been the best I’ve seen so far and literally step-by-step exactly how I felt. Which doesn’t make it right or wrong but nothing has bothered me more than everybody making the value of a game based solely off it’s length when other developers could put out a 10 hour game that isn’t remotely as captivating or immersive as this game and it’s one of my favorite resident evils I’ve ever played and I can’t see it getting old anytime soon. This was $60 well spent regardless if I am a diehard resident evil fan I feel as though I got every dollars worth and that’s excluding project resistance

I found that playing RE3 Remake up until Carlos gets the cure for Jill and then switching to RE2 Remake, then coming back to RE3 Remake after beating 2, really gives a full complete story of Racoon City. Since RE2 starts after Jill is infected and concludes after she is back up, it works really well.

Sure u may see Nemesis as an improvement over the original (I do as well) but that still doesn’t justify wasted potential. After the RE2 remake fans and newcomers were just waiting to see what a remake Nemesis would be like after how much a presence Mr.X was. Sadly what we got was an entirely scripted reskin of Mr. X with a few new moves who’s gone after his transformation. The original Nemesis was so much more than the tyrant from the original RE2, but now the remake Tyrant stole his thunder.
