    Resident Evil is a series that knows very well how to reinvent itself. It seems like every 6 years, an RE game comes around, that changes everything. RE7 is just such a game, and being the internet's darling, has made a pretty big name for itself. Can this first person shooter really be the next step for Resident Evil?

    Great review, but I disagree completely on not thinking that this is a true Survival Horror game. Survival Horror is a genre that blends horror with limited resources and puzzle solving. RE7 has all of this in spades, but by your criteria it’s the camera angle that determines if the game is survival horror. I don’t really understand the logic behind that.

      NEMESISxALPHA Agreed. FP works better for survival horror and fear, anyway. Fixed camera angles were due to technical limitations.

      Frankie Giustino fixed camera started off as a technical limitation, similar to the fog in Silent Hill, but became an atmospheric staple even after technology advanced to the point where it wasn't necessary to use fixed camera anymore.
      I'd say there's a good place for both fixed camera and first person in survival horror.

      Agreed. Think of 2D sidescrolling games like The Lone Survivor, which is clearly survival horror. Re1 and Re4 alike are both considered survival horror games despite their differing camera angles. Really disagree with Avalanche on this point. The perspective shouldn't determine whether the game's considered survival horror or not.

      @@TheVileOne It originally was supposed to be in first person. Limited capabilities of the PS1 console and Alone in the Dark is what encouraged Mikami to adopt fixed camera angles. If the PS1 console was capable enough, Resident Evil 1 would've most likely ended up being a first person game.
      And sure, he is entitled to have that very opinion. The logic behind it though is, well, shit. A game encompasses everything that is survival horror and it's not a survival horror game because it's in first person? People need to understand that the perspective that the player has with a game DOES NOT determine what genre it is or how faithful it is to its roots or the quality of the game overall. Just because a Resident Evil game is in first person or over-the-shoulder instead of fixed cameras doesn't mean jack shit. It's all about the execution and the execution of the first person perspective in Resident Evil 7 was done very well and I don't mind at all if Capcom continues the first person perspective in Resident Evil 8 because RE7 proved that first person can fit in well with a Resident Evil game.

    • @madcapmakov2
      @madcapmakov2 5 лет назад +114

      So what about Alien: Isolation or Outlast, two survival horror titles relying on first person views? First person doesn't determine the genre of gaming because it's mainly used from one particular genre, its exists to heighten the player perspective and immersion into the experience.

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus 5 лет назад +75

      Survival horror typically means being isolated in a creepy environment, where supplies are limited and threats are everywhere. The creepiness can come from gross outs and jump scares (RE historically did more of this), or just psychological horror (Silent Hill and Amnesia are great examples of this type - btw Amnesia is first person also). NOTHING about the genre implies it has to have fixed camera angles, or can't be 1st person. RE7 is a great example of survival horror done right. Just because it's not in the style of the Playstation games doesn't mean it's not survival horror. I've played games with fixed camera angles that are not survival horror at all. There's nothing wrong with disliking first person perspective in a game like this, but it doesn't make it not survival horror. The reason Super Metroid isn't survival horror, is because supplies are not limited. You're encouraged to just blow things up rather than avoid them.

He has even contradicted himself and stretched his opinions on other games just to keep this one stupid point. Pretty sure he said the game Nightmare of Decay isn't survival horror simply due to the camera angle DESPITE pretty much being a complete homage to Resident Evil 1. I would like to disagree with the statement that a game needs to have fixed perspectives to be survival horror. Mostly because that would mean all the silent hill games wouldn't have been Survival Horror and that's just ridiculous. I think, stripping the term "survival horror" down to the core just implies a scary game that has very strict resource management attached. The fixed camera perspective would be part of the "90s era Survival Horror" toybox, but even then not fully, since the original Silent Hill used them very sparingly, most often placing the camera behind your character.

      I remember that game. I beat it once, and then never touched it again. Not because it sucked (it doesn't) but because I just found it too stressful and, well... kind of repetitive in that your only options when confronted with the Xenomorph were hide or run. Since you couldn't kill the aliens at all, that meant the player had less options for navigating their encounters... which also decreased the replay value in my eyes. They should have made it like an RE game, where you could kill the alien, but doing so required either specialized weapons, or a shit tone of ammo that was very scarce, thus forcing the player to choose between fighting, running, or hiding. With THREE options for navigating encounters, the replay value of the game would be much greater, at least in my opinion. I understand the intentions behind the decision to make the alien invincible, and I can respect the desire to make the alien scary again with this method, but I feel that it just makes the game far more frustrating than it needs to be, especially with how thinly spread the save stations are located throughout the game. Because of this, after I beat the game, I never went back to it.
      Compare that with the vastly inferior Aliens: Colonial Marines, which I have actually replayed several times despite its numerous flaws, simply because I still had more replay value (especially the PC version and the various overhaul mods available that fix numerous gameplay issues) in my eyes because it wasn't a stressful experience.

    more campy zombie game because of the graphical limitations of the PlayStation.
    I have to give props to these developers for taking a risk with RE7, something we don't see enough of with AAA games these days. And it was a risk. Going over your videos covering all of the games including the remakes after the fact and doing so SEVERAL times you talk yourself into circles and use things like perspective to mean so much in one scenario then not matter that it's different in another (re2/3r) and at the some time brag about how much "more survival horror" said games are when you use a first person camera mod.
      I've heard some say you're gatekeeping and while I tend to hate the use of this phrase I do think it's use here is accurate.
      You are trying to tell people something is or isn't something when you yourself had said different either before or after and are now trying to explain "around" your doublespeak.
      The camera can't be a factor in what is or isn't survival horror when you yourself first say it matters then say it doesn't (remakes) then even say the first controversial camera (1st person) makes things EVEN MORE when used as a mod in those said ganes.
      You try to joke it off with your half ass comment in remake 2 video but truth is your exact "definition" of what is or isn't surcival horror is met by 7 as much as it is by remake2 or 3.
      If you are going to call 2 or 3 remakes survival horror then by your own definition you need to call 7 it as well.
      If you can't see that and are going to try to continue to "gatekeep" as they say well I guess no one can stop you but it really is a bad look and PLENTY of people are here to remind you that being able to admit our mistakes is much more important sign of character vs "being right".
      Trying to leave it all down to "my opinion" doesn't work here again only because you yourself have LITERALLY DEFINED what is and isn't survival horror (again to you based on your own set of rules) and through the magic of being able to both see you define this before and after the release of games you WANT to call survival horror (re2make) and this one you know deep down is as much survival horror as anything else there was (at the time of its release) and DEFINITELY fits your "new" definitions you "adjusted" after the fact when re2make released and you WANTED it to be considered.
      So either re2make IS survival horror along with re3make AND 7 or none of them are as no matter how much of the "rules" for survival horror they meet not being the ONE you seem to think (or don't think at times) is THE defining rule above them all.
      That 3rd person fixed camera angles MAKE survival horror.... You yourself have made this both a requirement and not one and so it's ultimately you who has to fix the issue.
      But having your cake and eating too feels like such a little boy pouting and running away with his fingers in his ears screaming "I can't hear you LA La LA!"
      You can like re2make MORE and say it's more of what you love about survival horror but trying to keep 7 from the title of survival horror at this point just makes you look bad and I really would appreciate (along with many others who have tried to point out the hypocrisy) you just doing the right thing and either giving 7 the title of survival horror its earned along with its fellow newer titles OR just admit that survival horror did die with games that would use fixed camera 3rd person.
      You and I both know that last statement isn't true so again please just stop with the stance that 7 isn't a rightful heir to the survival horror title.

    I have had agreed with everything you've said through out every review you've done. I'd almost say we're the same person. But just because a game doesn't tank controls or third person perspective doesn't mean its not survival horror. Those were decisions built on limitations not choice considering the first was supposed an fps experience. You're too good at what you do to have such a closed mind about that.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      I don't think it's a closed mind that I have on the issue. Those were the tools that the devs had to work with, when the genre was created, and even though you're right, they were more limitations, than actual conscious design choices, I still think they shaped survival horror. I mean, if alone in the dark created the genre, and re1 names it, and they both had the exact same features, I think it's not too far off to say that those features are a part of survival horror.

    Ethan Winters is the biggest badass of the series when you think about it. The guy has no combat training yet instantly knows how to use every gun, he can instantly shake off extreme pain (specifically pain caused by chainsaws), he wins a CHAINSAW DUEL, and when he sees a long legged creature crawling creepily though a tunnel, his reaction pretty much amounts to "Huh, ain't that some shit."

      Luca Fox Yeah, true, but someone who's never used a gun may have slight problems, such as not knowing how the safety works and how to properly reload, yet this guy just kinda knows. Plus, he also knows how to use a machine gun, which I'm assuming he's never done before.

      @Bl4ckD0g 5 лет назад +5

      Luca Fox you're right, guns are pretty easy to use. However someone with no training or experience with a fully automatic weapon, is going to be almost completely inaccurate. Mostly thanks to muzzle rise from sustained fire. Same with pistols, you still have to aim to get hits, and someone in a high adrenaline situation they have no way to manage is gonna be whiffing shots like a motherfucker. So yeah, Ethan must truly be a badass to shake off injuries and fight combat highs like a soldier. I'd argue the only weapon Ethan would come close to being effective with is the shotgun.

      @@zacharyearly4757 Eeeh I get what you are saying but I can also see where Tevin is coming from. A key aspect of horror is immersion and helplessness. Tank controls definitely spike up the helplessness factor just due to the pure unruly nature of it but that was a innovation of its time. But it also kills immersion when you get pissed off that you cant turn quick enough or aim accurately enough which was basically all of my RE3 deaths. So it makes sense that you cant be scared at something that just annoys the crap out of you. Pretty sure his comment stems from Avalanche saying the most dumbest thing in existence that 1st person isn't true RE or true horror like that is also objective.

      I like RE4 but, as a Resident Evil game, I just can't see it as an evolution in the series formula because it ditches many of the elementes that make a Resident Evil for me (same as RE 5 and 6).
      But everyone's different and I respect your opinion! :)

      Yeah, RE7 tried to put too many horror genres in the same game. Some may think it's a good thing, fleshing out every chapter and main enemy in their own way, seeing the whole as a love letter to the horror genre. But I can also see the counter point: if you really enjoy a certain part (especially if it's the first one) you may get disappointed when the rest of the game is quite different.
      The part that mostly stands out IMO is the boat part, but they even give you a different character so idk, devs did a great job.
      As for RE4, it's undeniable how good that game is - even though the only things it has in common with Resident Evil is Leon and cheesy dialogue. The fact that it was so freaking good is what drove the series into a downward spiral of ever more ridiculous action games.

  • @samjuan4899
    @samjuan4899 4 года назад +4

    RE7 is not a survival horror because it's not using a fixed camera? Really? So by that definition, Devil May Cry is more fitting to be a survival horror game than RE7 since it has fix camera and has horror elements on it.
    (And I know it was the OG RE4 before they decided to turn it to a different game but my point still stands).
    Did you know that Shinji Mikami opted to have the original RE game to be first-person but couldn't do it due to hardware constraints? The fix-camera perspective was a product of technical limitations. And with that mindset, we can no longer have any "real" survival horror game because most developers have ditched that camera style.
    Seriously, folks. The age-old argument that "fix-camera is needed for horror games because it hides stuff that could scare you" isn't really a valid point. A good level design could do that even with a movable camera. And the 1st Dark Souls game had proven that.

  • @jacobhubbard9266
    @jacobhubbard9266 5 лет назад +30

    When it was originally announced that RE7 would be in first person, I was skeptical and outright against it at first just like you. However, I told myself that when the game came out, I would put aside my skepticism and give it a chance. To me at the time, RE in first person just didn't feel right. RE in its purest form is in third person with fixed camera angles.
    I'm thankful to say that my skepticism was put to rest about an hour into the game and moving forward. This game really did scare the shit out of me, and overall this game deserves to be in the canon of the Resident Evil lore. Sure, no fixed cameras, but I feel like the first person approach they decided to take for this game was the correct choice and it absolutely works.
    I'm not entirely sure I would agree 100% that it's not exactly a survival horror (that's something I would have to think on and reflect), but I feel like that's more of a disagreement on definitions, so I don't think that's entirely important anyway. What's important (as you said) is the final outcome, and I do believe RE7 is a love letter to old school Resident Evil and (until the RE2 remake comes out) this will be the closet to we will get to the old school resident evil experience for the current generation.

    I'd argue that having a first person perspective is even more restrictive than fixed cameras, in a very good way when it comes to horror. Walking through hallways with barely any health or ammo, wishing that none of those fucking molded or one of the Baker would pop out of the walls behind me made for some pretty tense moments. And to me that's survival horror. I hear you though, I too am an old timer RE fan and the change of perspective changes the feel of the game but I don't agree that it's no longer survival horror. It's just a different kind of survival horror. Great video as always.

    I've watched through these reviews as someone who's played through basically every game in the series and dabbled in some of the Gun-con games, nice trip through memory lane. If 7 and REmake 2 are any indication hopefully great things are in store.
    I disagree with the Survival Horror term being associated to third person and fixed camera angles. By definition "Survival horror refers to a subgenre of action-adventure video games. The player character is vulnerable and under-armed, which puts emphasis on puzzle-solving and evasion, rather than violence. Games commonly challenge the player to manage their inventory and ration scarce resources such as ammunition. Another major theme throughout the genre is that of isolation. Typically, these games contain relatively few non-player characters and, as a result, frequently tell much of their story second-hand through the usage of journals, texts, or audio logs." which describes RE7 almost exactly.
    Now whether or not it's a true RE game in the classical sense due to the perspective is another story. I found the FPP to be just as limiting in many ways, you have no peripheral vision, no way to track what's behind you without turning around, and you still have no idea what's waiting for you right around the corner.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      Technically, I think you're right about the elements of survival horror, but I think the perspective is baked in there too. Kind of like the perspective is a major part of fps games. Once again, another great video! But I have to disagree with that survival horror comment you made. Silent Hill and Siren, which are both seminal survival horror game classics, only sparingly use fixed camera angles in their games and they are both respected by critics and audiences alike as survival horror games. So I don't think camera perspective necessarily makes a survival horror game a survival horror game, but rather how atmosphere and combat works. What separates a survival horror game from "Let's Play Bait" and "Action Games with a Horror Skin" is if there is combat present in the game, but only used sparingly as a last resort. I think Enemy Zero is a good example of this, it's a game that involves puzzle solving, backtracking, limited ammo and a scary atmosphere while still being in first person, and it only came out a few months after Resident Evil did in Japan. But hey, that's just my stupid opinion! Looking forward to what you think of the RE2 Remake!

    17:41 Ehhh. I mean, I agree that FCA has its place and serves a function to the survival-horror experience, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that a first-person or OTS perspective can't deliver on that front either. Honestly, this and REmake 2 are really the only RE games that got me really tense throughout most of the game, and their respective cameras added to it.
    A first-person or OTS camera honestly makes me feel more immersed in the environment since making the perspective physically closer to the character your controlling aids the illusion that you're experiencing their situation. Even though an OTS or first-person camera gives you a complete line of sight, you have a limited periphery. It creates a lot of tension when I can't see what's right behind me. It also does wonders for the sound design, where ambient noise feels more real when the developers can account for your physical position in the game.
    I also like what it directly adds to the gameplay. The limited periphery forces you to more actively look around the room for key items and whatnot instead of simply scanning the screen once the camera angles shift. Also, I like how aiming is more of a factor than it is in the classic games. The auto-aiming saves people who are shit shots and spammers. In here and REmake 2, you first have to recognize the enemies' movement patterns to earn that headshot and actually being in control of how much damage you deal an enemy through your aiming adds a new layer to the ammo conservation.
    I know this comment is a moot point since you've lightened up a lot more on you're REmake 2 video, but I still wanted to get that out there. I like the review anyway since you still acknowledge that everything else in this game checks out.

  • @Dean444ful
    @Dean444ful 5 лет назад +8

    I agreed with many of your points but there are a couple of statements I take issue with.
    First “I found that a lot of the people preferred the first third of the game due to its complete lack of connections to the series at large” I don’t think that’s what people prefer about the it. I think it’s more the fact that it has way more tense and narrow environments and you have to get around and slowly familiarize yourself with the house and it feels very much like the original RE. What bothered people about the later parts of the game (myself included) is that it becomes more of the shooting fest. You get a submachine gun and that sense of having to keep an eye on your resources goes down drastically. The enemies are no longer intimidating because they throw so many at you and you have the ability to deal with them pretty easily. It looses a lot of the tension and pacing of the first third that made it so intimidating.
    Also the statement about it being weird that RE7 took a cue from recent games that were inspired by the original RE seems irrelevant and to me almost pointless to bring up. The majority of games do this. That’s how gaming evolves. They take something from a game in a genre that worked well and add it to their own game. Games constantly do this so I don’t at all see it as weird that RE7 would be inspired by recent mechanics or changes in the survival horror genre. That’s just the nature of game development.
    Last but certainly not least: “Without the sense of fear that a third person fixed perspective brings, you just can’t have survival horror” ok, where does this logic come from? Can you back this up with anything? If you claim that what makes survival horror scary is the fact that you have a limited perspective then a first person view does just the same thing except I’d say even better. Your view is limited only to what your character can see and your character moves slowly. That seems like the closest you can get to survival horror to me. It’s the most realistic and tense perspective. Most of your other points made sense but this one seemed to come out of left field and seems to not be backed up by any solid evidence or rationale.

    8:16 - It's interesting the way the game pulls in Resident Evil canon toward the end, because in context of the series what it means is you're cast as the everyman who's being exposed to all this stuff for the first time--making it a good entry point for players who may be being exposed to it for the first time, too. "The Resident Evil lore is stupid and should be thrown in the trash" is just a thoughtless bandwagon idea. There is no such thing as a bad idea for a story: it's all in the execution. Things got silly in the later action-oriented Resi games and it wore down people's patience for the silliness, though. It was out of balance. When it comes to "balance," though, Resi7 is very well-executed, and if the series can keep that going it'll find its feet in gamers' minds eventually.

    Although, I wholly disagree with your definition of Survival Horror hinging upon "fixed camera perspectives"; which were never an intended feature so much as graphical and engine limitations of a bygone ear of gaming. I do appreciate your kind of caveat to that statement by leading with, "90's Era Resident Evil Style". Now, in that regard, yes; I do totally agree that while it comes very close to replicating the horror of the first four (Code: Veronica included) classic games but misses the mark in that area. But modern Survival Horror has changed since those days; as sad as that is to those of us who grew up in the classical era. Nowadays it's all first-person run/hide mechanics, or run/hide and limited fight (as with Alien: Isolation); while that's kind of sad, given all that we used to get from the likes of RE, Silent Hill (which never had fixed camera perspectives but is still one of the founding fathers of the classical era of Survival Horror), Alone in the Dark, and Parasite Eve. It's simply not for us, anymore, as with how Slasher films have come and gone, though many have tried and failed to bring them back. Horror, as a film genre, relied heavily on the first-person perspective as well with the nearly decade and a half of found footage films that were released almost non-stop at the theaters. Things change, and so do the definition of those things; we just have to learn to accept that, as hard as that may be to do. LMAO.
    By the way, great work, love the series, I've been binging it all day!!

      Thanks for the love man! I agree that times change, but there are several genres defined by their camera. The FPS comes to mind. No matter how advanced graphics get, the camera angle stays the same across the whole genre. The same with RTS games. I also gotta say, the camera in the first RE wasn't so much a graphical limitation, but an effort to imitate their inspiration, Alone in the Dark. I think that stuff can still work, regardless of how much things have improved. Games like Resonance of Fate, uses fixed angles and cg backgrounds, and it looked amazing.

I mean come on, it may have came out exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS back in 2012, but it did come out on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 a year later and was even ported to PS4 and Xbox One, so I'm sure plenty of people played it around the time it came out.

And sure, the perspective is quite different for the RE series (obviously) but this is the closest we've got in feel to the original RE's in a long time...and it didn't turn out like an Outlast clone as some people seemed to be thinking.

    I felt pretty much the same way when I played this game a month ago. I was happy to be wrong about what I thought it was going to be. Had a real blast with it. Great video too.

    Survival/horror... To me, survival/horror is a combination of tense gameplay where "survival" becomes more important than your kill count. And horror if it's "scary" or provides a tense atmosphere. It's definitely survival horror
