You guys'll probably remember me covering this games years ago, and if you do, you probably remember me being very disappointed with it. I played Resident Evil Dead Aim as a teen, and loved it, but after replaying it, I couldn't get over how bad the controls were. Well, I have officially returned, and I may have found something that makes this game wayyyyyy more playable.

This game has one of my favorite save room themes in the series.
Foster Wood I used leave the game idle while standing in one just for the music.
It is an incredible song. That and the intro song are both killer tracks.
Avalanche Reviews Apparently the voice actor for Bruce is a singer in a Rock Band. The save room theme is from one of their songs.

not sure where you got the info about Bruce's VA from, the soundtrack (save for the credits theme I think) was done by Nobuyoshi Sano who's worked on Tekken 3 and Drakengard's audio to name a few. most of this game's development was outsourced to Cavia, in fact. weird that they went from this to Nier lol
Also, according to the Wikia:
"The introduction to the "Reconstructuring Notice" was cut in places, thereby removing the explanation for Morpheus D. Duvall's dismissal. It also erroneously implies that he was blamed for the Raccoon Incident, while in the Japanese version, it was actually alluding to the Arklay Mountains incident."
Yeah, I read that. Checking out the original Japanese text, it read more like a threat, than a accusation.
To be fair they say the incident in MAY 1998 resident evil 2 takes place in September so unless your really knowledgeable about the series you won't know which is which based on dates

Wii wasn't out yet when the game came out, but yeah it would have.
I dont think the monsters look that bad. if the game lacks something its defenitly "color" im surprised that you didnt mentioned that. The game looks basically grey... Resident evil is a rare example of how colors work well with survival horror games.
I kind of like the muted color pallet. It feels darker and under saturated. I think that falls more in line with similar horror movies.
superbn0va If that is the case, than my game won't work because it's in black and white, and it's heavily inspired by RE.
Avalanche Reviews Look at the resident evil trilogy. They all had good use of colors and looked amazing. Resident evil 2 remake fortunatly retained that aspect and still looks dark and scary. I see where youre coming from but imo its not the lack of color what creates an scary environment

The protagonist's face is the scariest thing about the game. Also your face and voice don't match, but they're both nice.

I could probably imagine these characters working had "bootleg Ada" probably been given a more blunt and colder attitude, compared to the more playfully sarcastic and almost flirtatious nature of the real Ada at this point.
Whilst "bootleg Leon", would probably be the cracking wise and snarky type, kind of like RE4's Leon, but with a bit more of a slight bumbling edge to it, similar to say... Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead films.
Which, if CAPCOM ever thought to maybe re-imagine Dead Aim for modern consoles (which seeing as there's news of a possible RE4 remake, as redundant as it sounds, probably would give some of the lesser known games in the series a possible chance in the spotlight), could be an interesting way to make these characters more unique.

This game seems more fun than I thought. I wish Capcom would have done something like this in Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles instead of making them 100% light-gun style.

Gun is labeled as semi-auto, fires in bursts
I'm just getting on how it's labeled semi-auto, because semi-auto specifically means one pull of the trigger shoots one round, which is typically faster than a bolt action, but Bruce's default S. Edge is also classified as semi auto in real life because he doesn't need to reload a locked slide after every shot.
Then again it's a third party Resi, so it's whatever

@@rob98000 Semi-automatic means one bullet fires with one trigger pull, full auto means multiple bullets fire with one trigger pull. Burst fire is a very specific description of a certain number of bullets higher than one is fired with one trigger pull. These 3 classifications are very different and there are others that are even more different such as bolt-action and lever-action that are all different from each other in very distinct ways.

I remember playing this with a Blaster Light Gun from pelican for PlayStation when I was a kid. It felt so natural, favorite gun controller to this day. Used to play Dead Aim and Time Crisis 3 all day.
Now that I've experienced the mouse, I want to try out a light gun.

A few corrections: I always assumed the blaming of Morpheus for the Raccoon Incident was just the Company using him as a scapegoat. I believe it's stated in the in-game files, but the G virus was a nightmare to work without Birkin, so it was probably way eaiser for him to get his hands on the T-virus. Plus, the G-virus isn't really good at causing an outbreak since it can't be transmitted via bite or scratch.
That makes a lot of sense. Without Birkin, I assume that virus was a bitch to work on. As for the files, it looks like the Japanese version of the game, worded the memo differently, making vague threats of blaming him, and the US translation is the one that insinuated he was responsible.

This game was fun to play when I first played it. I didn't have an issue with using the controller to shoot, but it would have helped to have a mouse. This game is a hidden gem for Resident Evil fans. It's not the best but it is good.

clownavenger It was based on an unused concept for RE4. The two main characters in this game are pretty much stand ins for Leon and Ada.
The story defenetely feels like "Residente Evil 3.5".
Morpheus himself sounds like the prototype of the classic "cliche european bad guy" that Saddler would be eventually be.
It's actually funny you say that. When I first saw footage of this game my very first impression was that the main character looked like a cheap, off brand version of Leon Kennedy.

You got your info mixed up. In the "Dismissal Notice" file they aren't referencing the G-Virus outbreak incident of Birkin injecting himself. May 11th is when the first incidents with the queen leech virus start taking place. "On May 11, 1998 the Queen Leech triggered a containment failure in the underground laboratory."
Because remember, The mansion incident happens in July when S.T.A.R.S go in to investigate, just the night after BRAVO heads in with Rebecca Chambers in Resident Evil 0. In those cutscenes/that time Birkin is still alive conferring with Wesker. So maybe Morpheus did have something to do with the containment failure in the underground lab along with Marcus? It's never mentioned in 0, but since it's not official we can still use our imaginations and Dead Aim can still be correct.

RE is one of my favorite franchises and this happens to be the first RE I ever played. Seeing such an in depth look on a relatively obscure game makes me really happy!

I always felt that the idea of "Morpheus was responsible for the Mansion Incident" makes more sense when you see it as Umbrella trying to use Morpheus as a fall guy for the court cases that RE4 talked about.
Wasnt Morpheus just being Blamed for the Racoon outbreak? as in he was a scape goat which is why he turned on umbrella.
Never knew about the mouse that's pretty cool, i used a light gun which doubled as a controller with directional buttons.
It also had cool bosses with features for example take pluto, if you can shoot his head enough his brain hangs out and if you shoot it he dies.

I really wish they would give us Outbreak HD, or even Outbreak 3. I never could afford the chance to play it online. Still loved every moment of both of them.

There is a way to play online. Some one reversed engineered the servers.
3 years late but the files in the game explain that Morpheus was incredibly negligent when it came to employee safety and was widely disliked by the higher ups. When the mansion incident occurred, he was blamed for what happened because, in short, he was the head of the department that was experimenting with the virus, and since he was in charge and didn’t implement proper safety proceedings, he was to blame and was fired. This is why he sells umbrella out and steals samples of the t virus for this game’s plot

THANK YOU for showing gameplay clips. I remember being frustrated years ago when I tried looking for Let's Plays of the game, and all I found were extremely poor quality, and one was someone holding a camera in front of their TV screen. Another was someone with like infinite ammo or something killing everything before you can take in some of the enemy models. Your review is literally the only video in all of RUclips that clearly showed off the weird Hunters this game had. The RE wiki had screenshots in this odd angle, I was obsessed for the longest time how they'd look in-game, that weird clawless hand, and how they'd even attack.
This is my first viewing of one of your Retrospective videos and I gotta say, I loved it. You’ve earned yourself a sub.

When you mentioned playing with a controller and mouse feeling weird, I laughed a bit: there's a device that's basically exactly that concept, called the SplitFish, a nunchuk and mouse controller meant to work with first-person shooters.

It is interesting. Unfortunately a lot of the FPS community is dead set on the keyboard specifically--twitch movement with WASD lets them fidget around like drunken squirrels, a function that is utterly useless against a CPU but excellent for multiplayer mind-games. So it's really only appealing to single-player gamers like me, who dislike the limited movement speed/direction a keyboard presents.
The main character looks like a knockoff Wal-Mart version of Leon Kennedy. Also, what a coincidence that the main supporting character was also an Asian agent. I see what you tried to do, Capcom. I see. Lol
I mentioned that it my first review of the game, and people took it pretty negatively. It's clearly a carbon copy.

I really liked this game back in the day, despite having to play it with just the controller (15 years later, and I learn that you could use a mouse...well, guess better late than never), so yes, I feel your pain about the final boss, which is incredible frustrating having to deal with it using the right analog stick, and if you lose, you have to beat the final boss AGAIN before having another attemp at this guy...
Anyway, I actually liked the graphics, it looks like a Dreamcast game, but that is a plus in my book, and I really enjoyed the story, but that is most likely because I'm a James Bond fan.
In short, glad you gave this game another chance, your original review was a bit too harsh on it.
Sure, this isnt REmake, but back in 2003, this was a great "consolation prize" for PS2 only owners (I had a Gamecube, but I still really enjoyed this game, maybe more than RE0).

The Second RE title to take place on a Cruise Ship after Gaiden. I only ever refer to it as HEROES NEVER DIE. And hey, I enjoyed the story. The T/G virus is a new addition here and it's affect on Morpheus Duvall (it turned him into a woman) was blamed for the Arklay Lab disaster. It could be part of the official canon. This takes place in 2002, right? Did Umbrella have an official corporate end date (rather than the 2003 end of Umbrella mission)?
Umbrella's failed arms deal in this game accelerates the company's bankruptcy by RE4, so oddly enough this game is pretty dang important to the canon, if only for that vital detail.

Amazing video, nice to see that you got a way to give this game some kind of redemption, while its not the best game by any chance i just played it a lot due to how much fun it was playing it and landing headshot after headshot! hope you do outbreak 1 and 2 next, they really deserve some praise since they really bring a lot of survival in the survival horror
Oh yeah, the Outbreak games will be covered soon, but I have to finish the chronicles games first.
It might be nostalgia. Back in the day I used to live with my dad in Bahrain. It was either stay inside during the day with air-conditioning or get wrecked by the dessert. I found a cheap PS2 and the only game I didn't know was dead aim(i am sure they sold in Europe but never seen it or heard about it) . They sold it with the light gun. And it was one of my best RE experiences. It felt really good moving with the d-pad on the gun and the shooting worked great. Felt really immersive. Staying inside wasn't so bad in the end ;)
This game wasn't amazing by any means but it did have an atmosphere that made it frightening.

Wow, I never knew you could play this game with a mouse, I remember too how frustrating playing this game was with just the normal controller, it really doesn't give it justice. Dead Aim is definitely one of the better spin-off games in the series.

When you said the person who wrote this game's story didn't seem to know much about the series other than surface level stuff, that reminded me of Resident Evils 4 and 7. They have a great core narrative going with Leon, Chris, and all the others, but Capcom has this weird obsession with making Resident Evil games that have absolutely no ties to the rest of the series. This game seems to be one of those. It's almost bizarre. At least this one has zombies, so I gotta give it that. Sounds like a game I might want to try though, as long as my Cougar Minos X3 works on the PS3.

I don't hate it in theory, it's interesting to see what other less experinced people might be doing and how they would survive in this world.
RE was always about bioweapons tho not zombies.
That’s really cool that they programmed in that mouse solution. I can definitely see the mouse greatly improving the aiming during combat. Still not sure if I’d pick it up, but that’s still good to know.

Character design seems to have a strong correlation in regards to the quality of an RE product.
I had the incredible pleasure of playing this game with a Mission-Plus lightgun I picked up way back in the PS2 days. I think that fact alone just completely biased my opinion on the game. That was well over 10 years ago.
I came to the internet later to know that the game was considered unplayable horrid hot garbage, and that you shouldn't ever even consider looking at it. Another shameful RE Wannabe. And I couldn't understand it.
The Mission-Plus alone turned it into a godlike experience. It was a Desert Eagle model imitation (Bonus points) that had a gamepad attached on the side of what would be the underslung laser sight, matching right where my thumb would be while holding the gun, with buttons to boot, making the exploration to shooting transition instantaneous and seamless. It also had a really really cool recoil function, where the slide would actually kick back every time I pulled the trigger, taking the immersion up to 11.
Add that to all the points that Avalanche gave to this game in terms of its atmosphere, zombie movement, hit detection, good blend of RE exploration and RE combat, a dark room with a big ass CRT and I had probably the best time I ever had in a zombie game for a very long time.
Glad to have seen this review, its amazing what shit controls can do to a game, conversely, its amazing what great controls do FOR a game.

this game was great when it came out, great atmosphere on the ship, the hum of the background while zombies giving out a scary groan in the distance can be heard, but cant be seen. played it with a pad back then and loved it. it was a totally different feel for the usual tank turning controls.

I played it when it came out. It’s better with a light gun but it’s not bad. Good luck finding a copy if you want it. This game felt like RE:Outbreak Files to me though, it had ambition but just failed in execution.
It's unique enough to have fun with, and the atmosphere is really great. Very dark, and creepy. Plus, if you use the mouse, the shooting is super fun.

I’ve been binge watching all your RE reviews and I gotta give you a big thumbs up! Great reviews for all the games(even if 4-6 sucked gameplay wise) I completely forgot about dead aim! I’ve been playing them since RE1 came out on ps1, it is still my favorite out of all of them, keep up the good reviews!

My opinion is just the opposite. I thought 4-6 were loads of fun gameplay wise, but kind of failed in the story/plot department (except for 5, which was decent). I hate 4 especially. The characters were laughably bad (especially the midget zombie pirate), and the plot was just silly at times.

This game isn’t even animated nicely or anything. Doesn’t match the polish of the majority of Resident Evil games. Hard to believe it was released AFTER the masterful Code Veronica.
You can blame Cavia for their infamous lack of polish. There's a reason why Yoko Taro claims his time with the company usually involved him telling them to do something and then getting frustrated when they messed it up.

This game feels like it was specifically made for Wii, shooting with the remote and moving with the nunchuk, weird they didn't port it, would have fit like a glove

I actually found an old ps1 light gun and tried it on my Ps2 for this game.
It was alot of fun and worked suprisingly well. The lack of button on the Ps1 gun was made up by keeping the Ps2 controller close.
It basically means: Walk and interact with ps2 controller, zombies? Pull out gun, shoot once for FPS view, Shoot twice to nail the bastard.
Might sound like a bit of a handfull but it gives it a realistic feel, like, having to pull out your gun at the sight of an enemy, just the half second extra movment.
All in the name of extra fun.

Avalanche Reviews fun gameplay and beautiful story that Bethesda bastardized by reimagining the series. I was so eager to continue Domasi's Tale.
Lik-Sang used to sell a universal gun controller that works with Playstation/PS2/Xbox (probably only 480i passthrough, not progressive scan) and emulates Namco GunCon, and works with LCD/projection/100Hz/120Hz TVs/monitors. I don't know if it was any good.
Sorry for opening an old wound in case you knew Lik-Sang. Also a perfectly adequate Dreamcast VGA box was like $15.
No, I didn't know about that lightgun, but I'll definitely be looking into it. As for the VGA box, finding one that I can hook up to my framemeister is very expensive. The Toro box outputs scart and is pretty damn expensive. If I bought a cheap VGA box, I would either have to buy a legacy capture device, or take the hit in picture an lag, that an HDMI to VGA converter brings.
@@AvalancheReviews cheapest VGA to HDMI converters don't have a full framebuffer and could introduce at most a handful lines worth of latency.
They are usually based on MS9282 chip that you'll also find in the $5 Wii2HDMI key.
Incidentally I suspect that the recently released HDMI cables for Dreamcast should be super similar.
I wish I could find a detailed datasheet somehow for the chip. It just seems so super useful as a relatively easy HDMi transmitter. :( Need friends in Shenzhen China.
If you're stumped on what game to do next, I personally would love to see you review the Outbreak games. It'd be cool to see what your perspective of those games are.
I was a teenager when they came out. I loved playing the first one online, despite its flaws. File #2 I didn't like as much, mostly because I thought the levels were nowhere near as good as the first Outbreak's levels.

I still have to finish Outbreak: File #2. Admittedly, I'm also not a big fan of its scenarios. I think the locations are really cool, but the levels themselves can be really difficult to get through, whether that be because of the AI of your teammates or the way the game is structured. I believe that if I go through them on Easy mode first and then Normal mode, it'll help me to memorize the routes of each level.

Bruce is my favorite character. He was doing the witty one liners, before they had Leon do that. And if you know which button to push, you can move and shoot at the same time. People credit Outbreak file 2 for doing this first, but it was really this game that did it first.

Fun childhood tale. Wee lad undead had to help his dad beat this game by sitting near the console and swapping between the provided light gun and a controller for the final boss because he couldn't aim right with the controller and couldn't run right with the gun XD
A fave in highschool for sure! I broke my finger skateboarding and wanted something to play. I had guns from time crisis already. I had this game down to 2hr or less speed runs. I used to play it a ton! I still have it but idk when I played it last. Gun survivor 2 is my favorite.

Great video dude, it's been so long since I played this but I do remember (at least in the EU version) the dialogue not matching the subtitles...I don't mean it was out of sync but the text didn't match the words being said on screen
