Well this is it people! The last video in the Resident Evil Retrospective, and it's fitting that we go out of with.........a poof of disappointing smoke. Yes today we are covering the infamous Umbrella Corps. The game that proves not just any franchise can make the transition into competitive online shooting. Is it really as bad as the internet says it is? Let's find out!

It was being developed in parallel with RE7 and RE7 was originally branded as Biohazard 7 "to tie the two major release area titles together" then when RE7 started spiraling down the shitter due to it being a fking horrible and poorly received game leading up to its release and tons of negativity from the producer and director, they pulled it back to being "Resident Evil" and dropped the "Resident Evil" from Umbrella Corps because it was getting equally shit on by a different group of haters, so called RE purists...
In the end, fan service won out over trolls in RE7 shit show, but Umbrella Corps went by the wayside development-wise within 3 months right in the middle of the next development-deployment cycle with not so much as a word. They literally had the next survey out on what to develop next then shut the studio down to help with RE7.

Wait, I'm confused. At what points was RE7 ever a "fking horrible and poorly received game". The game has received nothing but universal praise since it came out. Or are we talking about Resident Evil 6.5 because apparently every RE game needs to be scrapped and restarted half-way through development ever since 2.

The game did have a "poor" launch day sales point (capcom told investors they'd sell 4 mil copies and hit 3.5 on launch day) Since then, it has gona higher up to the usual 10 million so I could not honestly say why someone would feel the game was poorly recieved other than initial jerk reactions to the changes made. Not saying I particularly liked the new direction as I skipped buying RE7 and just simply am awaiting a chance to buy RE2 Remake.

He has to mean the canned 6.5 (the direct action sequel to RE6). RE7 is a premier VR game and universally agreed to be a return to form for the series. It´s also the 4th best selling one so far: www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/comments/9umpj6/resident_evil_games_ranking_based_on_platinum/
Clearly a sharp fall-off from 4-6 but 6 salted the earth for a lot of people who didn´t return. RE7 also successfully introduced a new engine for Capcom

The crazy nonsense these textboxes put into the canon is infuriating, if some idiot pucks up these plot threads. It´s nice to know that a mid-50s Hunk is still as fit as Revalations 2 Barry.

The only thing I can guess with why they used Unity is that it's a better Multiplayer engine? MT Framework, from what you've showed on this channel, is great for handling detail and visual splendor. But maybe trying to use that in a speed-focused game which relies on performance being smooth wouldn't have worked?
This is just speculation as I have no idea how game engines work lol. I did nearly buy this with a friend a couple of times as it's gone down to silly money.

They used it to learn useful tricks that they might put into their own tech. They have learned more about Unity and they did not need to have writers to do that. Actually it would be interesting to know if they have used UNITY before and it would be interesting to see where they if at all the resources of this game got used. • @ReaverSTHLM

Unity was actually being used for Resident Evil 7 during pre-production. They did this because their own new engine wasn't ready yet, but wanted to get started on solving various technical, design and conceptual challenges while waiting for the new tech.
    Source: ruclips.net/video/PwBDtp7R6aM/видео.html
This actually isn't uncommon - and in fact, some of the things that come up during that pre-production/prototyping phase in a temporary engine/toolset can often inform development on the engine you're actually intending to use. It might play out something like this:
*knock on the door to the engine programmers' room*
    Programmer: WHAT!? We're busy.
Designer: Ummm, hi. We bumped into lots of stuff when doing [thing] in [engine]. Will our own engine have an easier way to solve this problem? We spent [number] weeks trying to hack our way around it.
Programmer: Y... yes. Yes of course. It's already been planned. Now leave us alone.
*next day, the engine team announces a delay of 3 weeks*
How does this relate to Umbrella Corps? Well, it's not at all unlikely that it was being developed in a similar way in Unity, and the team may have intended to swap engines at some point. But eventually, the list of stuff that the engine team would have to add to the engine became prohibitively large and expensive. It's worth remembering that Unity has a _tonne_ of stuff that you can simply buy off their Asset Store - off-the-shelf solutions for a few hundred bucks that would take weeks of work for a salaried employee to build from scratch. So with a game like this one, which Capcom probably knew wouldn't be a hit, it was probably just prudent from a financial point of view to stick with Unity. Indeed, that may have been the plan from the beginning. Could be that the engine team went "yeah, we've read your design docs, don't hold your breath for the in-house engine to solve that any time soon, and for less than $2 mil".
Finally, there's the bandwidth/priority issue. Not everything can be solved with money, sadly. Whatever requirements the Umbrella Corps team may have had for the engine, they'd have to compete on the priority backlog with whatever the engine team were busy building for RE7 and by all means the remake of 2. If you're the exec in charge of deciding on where your programmers' efforts are going to go, you're going to prioritize the mainline RE games.

I think the game can do well enough it went into a Free to Play model with a small crew to give the game updates.
For the story, I think it would have been possible to fit the "Agent" co op partner from Ada Wong's campaign into Umbrella Corps' story. He has plenty of experience and young enough to face the dangers.
As for the game itself, I enjoyed it for what it was. I loved to use the spread of shotguns to troll my enemies by destroying their jammers. And then using the hook to counter when they rushed me. All the while with HUNK's gasmask head. It was heaven for me for about 2 months before the playerbase moved on.
What I think could have helped the game if they included different variants and game modes. Like harvesting samples to earn points then using said points to purchase Biohazard killstreaks. I can imagine seeing a Mr. X fall from the sky then give the enemy team a good fisting. Unleashing a Licker like an attack dog. A Hunter as a bodyguard.
I think using the bosses and unique enemy types could have made the gun fights exciting.
I am slightly disappointed you did not mention the soundtrack and the weapon type differences. Because it seemed to me the SMGs were the must abused weapons because of how weak the zombies fall. And that the soundtrack emphasized a faster rate of movie and quick action.
What I love about the game is the lack of a sniper rifle. Not that I think they are terrible weapons, I hate what sniper rifles do for shooters. Yes it can be nice to master the game's crosshairs but it gets to the point sniper rifles will outmatch opponents entirely leave little counterplay. By that point a good enemy sniper will have a wall of teammates and then the other team will be forced to be picked off in cover. I hate sniper rifles and how they completely change the combat to suit one player who uses a sniper rifle.
I put 200 hours into the game until the playerbase fissled out. I enjoyed the review. :-)

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 5 лет назад

I remember i liked how S4 League solved the sniper gun issue, but the whole game was balanced towards swordplay. There aren't really good hiding spots or perches, and the sniper gun can either shoot peas, or needs to be charged for like 10-15 seconds and during that glows so brightly everyone on the whole map can see it, leaving the sniper super vulnerable, plus everyone moves so fast, they'll just as likely be behind some geometry by the time it's ready. Another balancing point was which guns shoot from behind cover (just as long as dynamically switchable left/right behind the shoulder camera has sight) and which are stopped by the cover, and i think sniper weapon couldn't be shot from behind cover if i remember right. Chain gun certainly couldn't. I think everything one-handed or dual-wielded could be shot from behind cover and two-handed weapons couldn't.

This game did what Operation Raccoon City already did in MP, just slighty better. Honestly, I don't know anyone who was asking for this game and I believe that is why it didn't do so well. Most RE fans, just wanted more RE, and this wasn't it.
Resident Evil 2 Remake is what I'm waiting for. Congrats on getting through this retrospective.
Since you're a fan of Fighting Games you should do a Bloody Roar retrospective sometime.

Single player was tough just because how little damage you could take. CQBZ I wish was more fleshed out plotwise. I'd like to believe that HUNK developed it as a way to deal with close combat zombie encounters hence the arm shield and holding the sidearms at ear level never further out the shield depth. Explains the weird pov. Hey, don't forget that this game's SP hints that Wesker is alive. Whether that was a result of Alex's research or a new plotline to come remains to be seen.

It might be too much to ask, but a full Final Fantasy retrospective would be great. Kudos to a great retrospective series and we're looking forward to whatever you're going to cover in the future. Great work. 👍

This has been a real treat. Thanks for putting out this series. Which title has the most monster variety? I honestly love the BOW's the most out of anything in this series - the idea behind the concept, the different results from all the shady experimentation and eventual outbreaks. Love that shit.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад +1

Glad you liked it man! I'll be completely honest, I actually don't like a lot of variety in the enemies. I feel like the more monsters they include, the less believable it gets. The zombies are the real draw for me. So I like when their models are varied and plentiful. I know that in in the minority in that though.

Awesome and surprisingly positive look at this one from you. Yeah I agree that it looked a bit rushed out, and the lighting does have its quirks as you mentioned. But I'm surprised they didn't include some sort of single player story mode involving some old characters to throw some fan service in there..or maybe making co OP models like Left for Dead where you can play as the zombies. Seems like a half baked game with loads of potential. This was a great retrospective overall, I need to go back and watch the ones I missed.

This was developed to be a spin off and they wanted to highlight that fact right out the gate. Not anything to do with hurting the brand or anything.
You could also see this with Operation Raccoon City.
As for why they used Unity. They probably wanted to give it a shot instead of building a full networking stack for MT Framework. Unity has networking already available in the Engine and the default setup is damn near perfect for this kind of game.
