- Quake Arena Arcade was one of the best games on the 7th generation of consoles and one of my favorite ports of any game. Id Software released it at a time where Call Of Duty ensured that it wouldn't make it past launch. I just wish people would have played it...

John Carmack did not program the AI of Quake 3
Thanks for commenting this. Someone else corrected me and I had pinned their comment giving proper credit to the late J. P. Waveren. But I guess they deleted it.

@@r1g0r_m0rt1s Before joining Id, J.P. Waveren created an impressive bot for Quake 2 called gladiator. It let you spawn multiple deathmatch ai bots.
@r1g0r_m0rt1s isn't he the guy who made the bots and them went on to work at Epic games?
@@christiangottsacker6932 You're thinking of Steve Polge. He programed AI bots for Quake 1 and was than hired by Epic to make the AI for UT.
I played a fair amount of it back when I owned a 360. for 5 bucks you got quite a lot of content since it has the original maps, expansion, and exclusive Xbox maps. I do wish someone can make a mod out of this underrated gem of a port.
Honestly I would love to see someone port some of the maps, and other features from this port to the PC version of Quake III, that'd be pretty sick.
I know there's a mod that changes the weapons to their updated QLA models. I can't quite remember if there's a mod that adds the updated textures though.
All the Quake Arena Arcade maps are on the Quake Live Steam Workshop ;)
@@attractivegd9531 That's awesome! I'm probably gonna check them out on PC now that I know Cliffside is on it lol. I haven't played Quake Live since they put it on Steam and it stopped being free to install.
@@attractivegd9531what about the PS2 versions of some maps?
then minigun part had me dead he pulled it out and went crazy then died lmaoo but great video keep it up!
Huh, didn't know they re-released the console version back in 2010 neat. A classic awesome fragfest. Love that airshot reference. Low FOV is kinda a fun killer, looks way too zoomed in. Good video and review!
noticed the FOV right away, could never play it these days
that intro was raw
Arena Arcade is still super fun. Takes some getting used to on a controller, but once you get the hang of it, it's a blast.
QAA is the best, loved it so much and its the best port of Q3 imo, wish it came to Steam.
I think i saw it
well, considering quake 3 is one of the greatest fps ever its no surprise... whats sad is people just a few years younger than me don't even know what quake is.
As a PC exclusive gamer, I never got to see this version of Q3. I've been modding the Quake series for years, and I appreciate your perspective and review of this port. Great video, and a spot-on review. I agree it is a shame this did not go anywhere as it has a lot more content than the PC version. There are some maps there I really want to play.
It didn't go anywhere because the concept of an FPS with a controller is asinine, let alone the concept of a high skill ceiling AFPS like Quake on a controller...
@@beanwithbacon True, however we never got to see this content on the PC. We all need more Quake in our lives.
Considering we just got a Quake 2 Remaster, I wouldn't doubt Quake 3 is next to get a remaster, hopefully with all of the exclusive maps found in this game.
@@NipplesTheEnchilada2323 Can hardly call anything by Night Dive a "remaster", more like an insult to the original.
@@beanwithbacon You clearly haven't played the Quake 2 remaster then, as they added cut mechanics and also have previously unreleased design documents and concept art included.
Good video Rig, makes me wanna play the game lmao. One thing tho, it was kind of hard to hear you at times. So maybe increase your volume there.
I had no idea this version of quake 3 even existed! very cool that there's a way to play it on xbox 360. does this version have exclusive weapons? I don't remember some of the last guns you showed off being in the pc version.
The proxy mine launcher and minigun were from the Team Arena expansion for Quake 3.
It's even backward compatible on xbox one and series for 5€
can you imagine?? the next remaster.. QUAKE 3 ARENA!!!! lets see how it goes in 2 to 3 years from here...
I thought this was going to be about Revolutions but yeah- Arena Arcade was fun in the 360 era back when people played. That castle level was cool. I think they eventually ported it over to Live but I'm not 100% on that. You really got me wanting to replay this but alas no xbox anymore (and as you said no one playing). Good vid.
Yep I believe the castle level is in Live
Played a fair bit of this on my 360 back in the day. It's a solid port of Q3A, and I like the improved weapon models.
In our infinite ignorance, humanity shunned this incredible program... We did not yet know that the great answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything was not 42 but John Carmack.
I played the heck out of Q3A on PC back in the day. I just got this on my Xbone, but the controller just can’t live up to the precision that mouse and keyboard offered 🙃
my original xbox id's pfp is still the one you got from quake arena arcade. loved the shit out of this
I hope when Nightdive ends up remastering this game they add the XB360 content into the game
I definetely had it, but didn't play it much, all my friends played COD4 (or was it World at War?) back then.
But I mostly played Quake 3 on the Dreamcast of all things, massive 4 player online matches :P
I think it was Black Ops that came out around that year. Idk they all blend together for me.
I've heard Q3 on the Dreamcast was a great port, I love that it had mouse and keyboard support even back then!
P.S. It's a huge honor to have you comment on my channel!!
Just wait a year, judging by the Quake and Quake 2 remakes. We'll probably get a definitive version of Quake 3 arena with all the stuff from this game too.
One can only hope. There's rumors of id software making a full on reboot of Quake going back to the series' Lovecraftian roots but I'll wait to see it.
A brand new channel has been blessed by the algorithm
Nice video! I wish this game was more popular. I used to host a lot of games from 2013 to 2015 until Halo 5 came out. Some good console players out there and a few of them used XIM's. Even hosted a mini tournament at some point. I miss those days! I actually got pretty damn good at the movement with a controller towards the end until Halo 5's aim slow and heavy system ruined all my muscle memory. Man if I could go back to those days... Glad to see a review of it. Better late than never! haha
Shoutout to Kill Domain, JupiterJonah, Fritzkriegen, Silent Sputnik, Dukallian, H81v Abusiv, Dubreeze, RaizoUFO, SyN Duke Nukem, BeyondNecroDome, Relyx, Redline 80, Senpai Wilkis, H3avyM3tal96, and TrippinSnappin who had modded the game!
Quake 3 Arena was my addiction in 2000 - 2002. At the beggining i played vq3, later on it was CPMA, then i sometimes played clan arena. Nowadays i play quake champions sometimes. It`s love 4 life ;]
I always enjoyed playing the Clan Arena elimination ruleset over base Quake 3's FFA
AYY THE BIG MANS BACK
This game engine was used in a game called Tremulous which was such an awesome open source game. Wish it was still around. It was a great concept.
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s It was basically a team fortress style game with the option of being a human or an alien. Each side being able to build bases and such and upgrade weapons or evolve into nastier bugs.. There are many videos on the Tube about it. Very fast paced and being open sourced there were a lot of different style servers which made for some serious fun. it should have been bigger than it was.
I actually played quake 3 on dreamcast with a buddy every day before school. No memory card so we had to reset the controls every day.
I now own it on pc and PS2 and its just as good.
I really like PS2 quake revolution. This game is also really cool
Nice video. Tbh I bet lots of people play quake 3 arena... But on Dreamcast with the dreampi setup 🤣 that and probably the PC port as well. Yeah I don't think I ever saw this game on the marketplace. I also don't think I had a 360 at the time. Interface is 100% classic XBLA 360 era no doubt.
speaking of q3a campain in 2010 someone made his own set of youtube videos called Arenas (also known as Doom Arenas or Quake Arenas) starring doom 3 marine kinda giving q3a some story from doom 3 marine´s perspective
YESSSSS I remember watching the full movie when it was finished!!!
For me this was the best game of all time can still see myself whole nights with friends fraging the hell out of each other on Camping grounds
I just got this the other day, and its pretty fun, just wish i could find a live server AND figure how to change your game character
Go to the player settings menu and select "Change Model".
I always used Phobos back in the Dreamcast port from Q3A, I still use that skin in Doom Eternal, heil Phobos
Underrated character. I wish I got the Quakecon Phobos figure but those are so expensive nowadays
Next make about Enemy territory:Quake Wars, which is also considered a bizarre and very underrated quake Game which yeah also wasnt that known
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s yeah and its a shame that Nightdive studios doesn’t remaster the Quake games that focus to the Strogg lore like Quake 2 for example when it had its 25th Anniversary some few months ago
I recently made a video on Brink where I mentioned Quake Wars. I haven't played that game in close to 15 years but I still remember the Stroyent commercials like they were yesterday lol.
I might actually pick it up again and make a video on it.
I remember this, I had 1 and 2 on the N64 and was really disappointed there was no campaign mode on the Dreamcast back in the day.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Thanks for making it!
Man, it doesn't feel like it's been a whole year since I released this. There are a lot of mistakes and editing errors I wish I could have fixed.
Aaaah QAA.... that brings me back... my first quake that i actually bought. Before that i had uhmmmm "borrowed" version of Q3 on pc
personally played q3a on pc (had no idea til now you can change rail colour,i guess i did not expect a gun customisation when the others had not any)
Bassed
I have played quake 3 since I was very little, It was my first game and my dad introduced me when i was around 5 or 6. Quakes community is amazing but the console version is something I'll never touch.
It's the year 2023 and we still have to put up with this level of video quality ... FS!
As a big Quake fan I was surprised when I saw this on Xbox recently, literally never heard of it. Its decent, a bit hard to get used to the controller.
I do miss when this genre was on the top. I looked at quake champions but never found a match and poking around while I waited I realized there were heroes and the whole thing had the modern cash shop feel to it.
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s from the very start, they want to monetize things….just….make a good game ya know? We want to and will spend money on good games it all seems so simple. Busted games across the board but guaranteed the cash shops work flawlessly.
i tried playing not long ago on xbox but i dunno if its just me or is all the controls weird ? there isnt a way to remap unless im missing something
I didn't have much of a problem with the controls myself, but I also didn't need to rebind anything personally.
for me the buttons just didn't feel right lol , im used to paying quake with a keyboard and mouse @@r1g0r_m0rt1s
@@DrDIYhaxAh, my first experiences with id games were on console, so the controls fit perfectly for me.
@r1g0r_m0rt1s ahh fair enough yeah I've been a pc gamer all my life so using any controller on a game like quake just feels illegal to me 😄
i never played this game but it looks like so much fun!
The character models look amazing in this compared to Quake 3! I play Quake 3 on Android with the Quad Touch app, the stages look fine but the character models arent great - is there a way to mod the characters from this into Quake 3?
I dont understand what you mean. 11:37 Character models look the same here and in quake 3. Maybe something was weird with your version of game on android?
@@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333The 360 version had upgraded textures, the models stayed the same if I'm not mistaken
I was gonna get this a few weeks ago but I already own quake 3 and live on my PC and idk if i can play it with controller
Before I got a computer good enough to play Quake 3 Arena on I played Quake Arena Arcade on Xbox 360. Fun times.
Team beef created a way to port this onto quest VR. I've played it in 3d. It's phenomenal.
Is there a way you can port it to PC VR? i would be stoked to try that
I thought it was quake live for xbox360 but it has exclusive maps and a peculiar campaign
No way, I'm like 10 or 15th on the leader board in QAA. I played with Silent Sputnik, number 1 in QAA lol.
Edit: I use to make kids rage quit all day on this game 😂
Oh man I absolutely love it when the algorithm actually does what it's intended to do and serves me up a helping of delicious Indie creator with under 1000 Subs. It's definitely like finding a gemstone in a pile of cat shot. I'm the 189th subscriber baby!
P.S. My mom used to suffer from Fibromyalgia when I was a kid however she managed to beat it.
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s you know , I should know the answer to that but I don't. I'll ask her. The one thing I remember her telling me was she finally had to accept her condition was a part of her so stop worrying about hurting people's feelings .She told everyone to stop hugging) touching her. Stop being supprised and upset if she's late for something ,leaves early or doesn't show up and so on like that. The pain all that caused wasn't worth it . I'll ask about the rest
I remember Quake 3 on the PS2 had horrible loading time and UT wasn't as good as the PC version. But we had TimeSplitters, though ;)
I never got to play Quake 3 on PS2. I heard that version had some cut lines for Doomguy but I'm not sure if those are real or not.
When i was a kid i didnt have quake but i played the crap out of turok rage wars. They really need to remake that game
Cards on the table here, I've never actually played a Turok game before. I've heard they're really fun though!
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s they're pretty fun but unforgiving if you happen to get lost in a level. Rage wars takes characters from the other games and throws them into an arena. It has everything from guns that enlarge enimies until they explode to freakin raptors, not to mention the unique game modes
Dude I got this game on my Xbox like the other day, and it’s very fun but sadly very dead, I queued up for a match multiple times and got it once with some quake veteran probably. But I like the game a lot it’s sad it’a dead.
LOL I DIED AT 8:50
I can’t believe this is only $5.00! 😮 I have enough reward points to get a $5.00 Xbox gift card, definitely buying this! Thanks for this great review. ❤😊
Have fun! It's worth the price of admission
This is how I got my console friend to play Quake.
The aiming was shit because it was emulating a mouse but beside's that it was a good port.
Hopefully Night Dive remasters it with all content from all ports, even the cut voice line cut from the PS2 version...
Though I would rather have a remaster of Doom 3 and Quake 4 for once, doom 3 always had shit ones, I enjoy Quake Champions alot more than 3 anyways since I can play as a Death Knight.
I played quake 3 arena on dreamcast and quake 3 version on playstation 2, the playstation version has the best campaign
aiming controls were too twitchy and no local splitscreen, it was a solid port i suppose but yeah it lacks in major areas.
I PLayed the shit out of the ps2 port of Quake 3 I had no idea this was a thing!
The best console FPS I never played... Online, because despite waiting years for it's eventual and barely publicised release, I could never reliably connect to any lobby because the game had issues with certain Internet providers. Then of course, the studio closed down instantly after release. I remember a dev acknowledging the problem in some forum post but that was it. I could count the amount of matches I _did_ connect to with one hand. I just got 'booted' out of the Player Match/Ranked Match menu 95% of the time. RIP.
I'm astounded to see so many comments here discussing their online experience yet no mention of this issue. I guess it wasn't as widespread as I had assumed.
I no longer have this issue on XSX, but, finding lobbies? No luck so far - not that I have tried often, mind.
Yeah. I still haven't gotten to play any online multiplayer in this port. Thankfully Quake Live still has active players
I absolutely hate the BFG in Quake 3.
I played it a bit with some randoms online when it first came out. Probably 30 ppl played it for a month lol.
I wish I could have played it online with someone even when I played it back in the day
i only play on PC, but looks cool, sadly i need at least 110 fov (but i use 150) and either mouse or gyro aim to be comfortable, so being able to work it is cool
"being able to work it" is putting it very gently lol. Once I switched to PC in 2011, I need to have at least 100° FOV in every game.
It was realised on the Dreamcast and pc
S W A G M E S S I A H
I assume you have at this point but if you want to play this with people just get on pc fam lol
Great review though, honestly shocked this came up in my recommended but I'm glad it did
I used to play a ton of Q3A on PC when I was a kid
Jen X-ers Played this in 99, Boomers we’re too busy barely understanding the internet and wasting their money on scam infomercial’s and Rolling Stones revival tickets.
Quake live isn't actually that hard on controller they could make a console only quake that was fast as quake 3 and you can do well as long as everyone has controller. Most buttons aren't used in quake it's all weapon swapping here is my Xbox 1 controller layout LG Dpad right, RL Dpad left, Dpad down RG, Dpad Up gauntlet, A Rifle, B GL, X shotgun, Y Nailgun, Left bumper jump , left trigger zoom, right trigger shoot,
I've always wanted to try this port
Since I love weird console ports of old fps games
But unfortunately I've never owned and still don't own any xbox consoles
And I don't really want to buy one just for this
:c
I may look into setting up Xenia eventually
I'm pretty sure it doesn't support online play though
Series x/s is great for emulation from what I heard, and can play a lot of legacy stuff as is
I wouldn't suggest buying an entire console to play this version of the game. If anything, just play Quake Live.
I would buy this if I had an XBOX
Wtf was the dude in the opening? I'm assuming he's a now famous RUclipsr, but I've no idea who.

Nah that was the only other review of Quake Arcade I found on RUclips. I have no idea who he is lol
a remake would do great tbh .
Night Dive knocked Quake 1 and 2's remakes out of the park so I think they could do a Quake 3 remake
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s honestly that would be great if they do the remake ,cause it would bring back a lot of players back , i've been playing on quake champions since 2017 and it's been great but now it's just dead in the apac servers such as Singapore, Sydney, S.Korea , Japan ,so yeah a remake would be really good instead of a remaster .
Sorry would play but do not have xbox. In 1997 the moast popular game was quake 2 in my school
Nightdive remaster when
I just got the remasters, I'm thinking about making a video on them. Only issue is that I got them on switch. I don't know how I'll get footage on it.
2:50 Ackchyually, they'd more likely be Gen-Xers.
5:44 Notice how it's double-barrel but consumes only one cartridge per shot. Maybe two shells count as one ammo unit. Also, it has a stockless pistol grip that's canted backwards for no reason. The laser marker is purely aesthetic.
5:57 Has a pump sound effect but no pump animation. See also the shotgun from Doom 64.
7:14 Would you believe there's a "flechette cannon" in Star Wars? Dark Forces if I recall. It's one of the best weapons for deathmatch because its shots can't be blocked by lightsabers.
7:49 "Id-eration." 🙃
8:14 I never understood why a melee kill was a "humiliation." "Mutilation" is more like it.
13:34 Cool that there's a "westpaw" mode. Yeah, "westpaw," not "southpaw."
14:34 The genre needs something to give it more panache. Maybe make it more like 'The Running Man' so it has a sense of theatricality. A modern arena FPS game should have ADS gameplay mechanics, including the ability to aim grenade launchers and other indirect-fire weapons. Also the ability to lie prone and use bipods. So less CoD and more Red Orchestra. And definitely with some S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Unreal Tournament in the recipe too. There could be different gameplay modes like "no armor" where the focus is on speed, maneuverability, and evasiveness, and everyone's easy to kill (comparable to Slayer with no shields in Halo). Or "with armor" where everyone starts out wearing armor that absorbs damage like Half-Life's HEV suit. Some maps could take place in low-gravity or zero-gravity, so maybe there could be specific tools geared toward the nature of specific maps like jetpacks or grappling hooks. Maybe vehicles too, like mechs or whatnot. Or maybe something more like Mad Max or Death Race 2000 (which could be its own gameplay mode or "event"). Free-for-all, team deathmatch, and co-op modes should all be included. Co-op would be where your team has to hold its ground against Killing Floor-style hordes of mutants, cyborgs, clowns, or whatever else you care to imagine of demented do0m a go go.
Great video, voice too quiet music too loud
Needs better audio balance. I can’t hear you for most of the video.
Watch my newest ones, I fixed that issue lol
Yes let the power of the gauntlet pummel compel you bwahaha ahhh hahahahaha d8)
Yeah I never played it but have no interest in changing that. I play shooters either co-op or single player and the arena type shooters with bots never really appealed to me. Quake III is easily my least favorite numbered Quake, It sounds like fun for those who enjoy Quake III and similar games though.

How is it even possible to play Q3 Arena on a console?!
microsoft elite controller warranty is atrocious. if it stops working, you know, like stick drift after 3 months, you're shit out of luck. my wolverine ultimate is a far superior alternative imo and has lasted me 2 years now after receiving a faulty unit at first that was swapped out extremely quickly via their warranty which is at least a year.
Yeah. I'm probably not gonna get my elite fixed. Thankfully it still works
Yes, it was a dead game cause it didnt make any sense to play this on xbox for various reasons. You need a keyboard and a mouse to do proper movement called bunny jumping. ...and if you wanted to play Quake 3 Arena you probably wanted to play it with the newest mods for competitive play on PC.
This was my first experience playing Quake 3 because I didn't have a PC for it. It's almost as if Arena FPS games can be played casually.

No offense, but you're bunnyhopping is god awful. You just can't bunnyhop/strafejump properly with analog sticks. They just lack the speed/precision required. FPS games were never intended to be played with controllers...
Firstly, it's "Your" not "You're" ;). But yeah, I'm pretty bad at video games lol
Though, I'll take the bait and say you're wrong. Controllers nowadays do actually have the precision and means to pull off advanced movement like b-hops, airstrafes and rocket jumps. It's just that the industry itself hasn't changed for 20 years. Every FPS developer homogenized Halo's control scheme because it worked at the time.
Look up SolarLight's video on using a controller to stomp a professional TF2 tournament. It really opened my eyes up to the depth of possibility on controllers.
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s First off TF2 movement is a lot less complex than Quake movement also I've SolarLIghts videos and while his movement is decent it's nothing compared to a good MnK player's. Secondly it's simply due to how the machine reads input from analog sticks vs a mouse. Controllers don't do anything for FPS games but dramatically hinder design in the genre.
@@beanwithbaconWell now I know you're just being a reddit contrarian and are looking for reasons to complain. So I'll boost my algorithm.
Firstly, the Source engine's movement is fundamentally more advanced than ANY of id Tech's. And, as such, leads to much more situationally useful techniques than simply b-hopping. Cope with that fact.
Second, if you wanna get pointlessly reductive and talk about the absurdity of how a computer handles its inputs. Look at keyboards, they're not designed to play video games on. WASD as an FPS control scheme makes no sense logically. And yet you took the time to learn how to do b-hops and strafejumps.
You can learn how to do advanced movement tech on a controller, you just have to stop being a hardass and actually try to learn something new instead of automatically discarding things you don't like.
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s Source engine is built of of ID Tech engines, all the the movement in Source existed in Quake years beforehand. Seriously, you can't be that stupid. All the incline jumps/phyiscs, double jumps (meaning Quake 2 style ledge jumps) etc etc etc, all come from Quake. Source movement is only a thing because it's built off of the Quake engines. Maybe actually do the tiniest bit of research before replying againg eh?
Just because an input device wasn't originally designed for a certain task doesn't mean it might still perform better at said in certain instances than a device designed specifically for the task as has been proven with high level FPS gameplay. You can't learn high level movement tech with a controller because the analog stick input simply doesn't allow for the speed/accuracy required for all the advanced tricks seen in games like Warsow and Quake DeFrag.
@@r1g0r_m0rt1s ruclips.net/video/o-5N9aN_YlM/видео.html That's simply just not possible to do with analog sticks...
