    We all knew this day was coming. The day when we'd have to cover probably one of the oddest games in the Resident Evil series. Can the gameboy color possibly be powerful enough to house the full RE experience? Well.......I think we both know the answer to that question...

    RE Gaiden is a game that's a lot more fun to think and talk about than actually play.

  • @TimeBomb014X
    @TimeBomb014X 5 лет назад +30

    Gaiden really had a big impact on future RE games. The idea of setting an RE game on infected cruise ship that's been repeated in Dead Aim and Revelations. Barry teaming up with a mysterious girl whose infected (Revelations 2) Shows that the game had some great ideas in it

      I never thought about it, but yeah you're right. A lot of RE games would go on to use similar plot points and settings.

    I remember I got this game as a kid, because it was RE of course. It actually wasn't that bad to play. You just have to ignore the story. I didn't mind it as much as everyone hates on it.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      I wouldn't say I hated it. I had fun for the first 30 min or so, but it doesn't hold up past that point.

      Me as Kevin : "Please help!"

      Loved the games though, and tbh the AI considering the age of the game and how complex AI in a game of that sort had to be to even function in any sort of fashion, isnt all that bad IMO.

      I played it on an Emulator. It's actually fun, despite the fact it kept the bad voice-acting.
      There was also a Multiplayer that I assume's fun on its own. But couldn't play it because, well, Emulator.
      Regardless, fun game! I highly recommend it if you're planning on getting it..!

  • @residentgrigo4701
    @residentgrigo4701 6 лет назад +28

    The Alone in the Dark GBC game kinda worked, so this project wasn´t doomed on principle.
    CVX was one of the best written Capcom games of it´s day and Mikami directed REmake and 4. The 2 best survival horror games to this day. His produced Evil Within 2 is another modern classic. Especially on nightmare, as it changes genres into a sneaking game. Even half the script of Killer7 was by him. A total (horror) legend. Likely the best director in his field with no truly bad games on his resume. Unless P.N.03 has totally deteriorated by now.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +8

      Cvx is a very poorly written game. The first hour of gameplay leads to a plothole that negates the entire premise of the game. Also, that comment was a jab, not a declaration of fact.

    • @TwoTailedCaperer
      @TwoTailedCaperer 6 лет назад +3

      I'm still mad at that ridiculous plot twist in P.N.03. At least if you're going to make a mediocre game, don't make it end on a cliffhanger that makes you question the entire experience, and one that we're likely never going to get any answers to.

    • @residentgrigo4701
      @residentgrigo4701 6 лет назад +2

      Now i am curios. Which major plot hole at the start of CVX?
      The game suffers of being too self contained, despite feeling like the actual RE3. Nemesis did little to push any plot forward and mostly resolved lingering treads from 2. CVX on the other hand may feature too much buildup for future games we didn´t quite get as envisioned. Two (very unique) semi-abandoned installations as a setting. A main virus that has little use for mass productions - meaning that sequels can´t really use it. Wesker is only there as a tease, etc. Still a better ration than what Zero did. At least 50% of that one is dedicated to spooling all that released before into one web. Leaving little room for individuality. A fucking leech hive impersonating a wannabe Spencer undid a whole city. Ok Capcom...
      All weird decision but CVX may have been the first consistently written Capcom game. It´s the only pre-REmake game where i can still watch the cut-scenes and don´t constantly scratch my head. You can really see the improved baseline writing compared to what came before in the S. D. Perry novelization. The story works as a horror mystery with consistent themes (siblings, insects, legacy). I wonder how the game´s story would be regarded now if it didn´t rip-off Titanic love story too.

    • @Gaff.
      @Gaff. 5 лет назад +2

      Evil Within 1 should be recognised as a modern survival horror classic. TEW2? Jesus, I don't get how anyone plays it. I've engaged in several diatribes on TEW2, so if asked, I'll do it here, but I think I'd like to avoid it unless someone's really interested.
      RE4 is one of my favourite games but I can't call it survival horror. I'll admit that some sections sort of felt like it, but the lack of resource management alone sort of negates it if you ask me. The first big village fight felt more like survival horror to me than anything else in the game, as you have very limited resources at that point and the game is bent on depleting them whilst giving you a good amount of time where you are not allowed to leave that situation. It's tense and the resource management there puts it over the edge in my opinion to make it a good survival horror section, just not the type that classic RE was. Other than that, I don't consider RE4 survival horror.
      I like some aspects of C:V's writing a lot, but others are a bit over the top and start veering towards the bombast of the action era, when I wish the game remained more grounded like its predecessors. Still love the game, though.

    I’ve heard about this game but never really looked much into it. Honestly, I think I could really get into it. The combat is an interesting spin on the zombie shooting action of the series. And that is pretty cool that you can do a bit of sequence breaking. I like finding those points in games where you can jump ahead when the game didn’t intend you to. Great video! :)

    Gladly appreciate your retrospective reviews on the Resident Evil series! I noticed something after all these years about the series while watching all of your videos: everything post RE2 for me has been about trying to capture the magic of the first two games but never quite reaching that same level of euphoria. Most of them have been great (minus this game and others like survivor), but it's just not the same feeling.

    Finally get some insight into the game! I actually thought the battle system was more akin to Earthbound when I originally heard about it (and if I recall I do think I saw a pixel art rendition of Mr. X but it could've been just a mockup done by a fan), actually surprised how different it was! As always, another great review!
    What I think amazes me about this, is how well a game like Metal Gear Solid worked on GBC (even if different storyline wise from the PS1 MGS). So it almost begs the question if a proper RE title could have worked out on GBC. Unfortunately that time has passed so we'll never truly know, but we have see some pretty decent Handheld stuff over the years for RE, so there is that at least.

    I have this game, mostly for collecting purposes. It's not good but it does have some cool elements like the zombie graphics and moans are pretty sweet I think. It's also pretty tough and ammo is limited which is reminiscent of the original game. If it had a couple puzzles to break up the constant key finding gameplay, the game would have been a lot better.

    I played this back when I was just getting into the RE fandom after and despite the low game boy graphics and rpg like battle system it was somewhat enjoyable, and yes I agree the ending pissed me off a little, after finding out it was none canon I felt better. For some reason being in battle with a zombie, having that game boy music going, and having that meter going back and forth while having you knife out swinging felt oddly satisfying.

    I remember reluctantly playing it because my favorite RE character Leon was in it and I thought Leon and Barry would be an interesting mix. By the end of it I was pissed I used my saved up allowance lol. BTW really interested in hearing your thoughts on the RE2 remake, keep up the good work.

    I'll be honest here. For as bland and uninteresting as the story/gameplay is for Gaiden (aside from being able to play as BARRY BUTTONS) The ending is in it's own way. A bit unsettling. Combine it with just the general context of it that Leon is who he claims to be and is instead a shape shifting Tyrant and the dark and.. oddly eerie close up pictures of the cutscene. Especially the very last one with the close up of "Leon's" mouth and a visible cut wound with green blood. It can be a bit unnerving. So that's the only thing i'll really give it.

    This game deserves Re2 Remake treatment. REALLY. It has some creepy atmosphere, shape shifting B. O. W, which remind me of the thing paranoid , full of "venomous' zombie that swarm you and hit you with crowbar and more lethal when they bites you. And Umbrella Submarine segment, in wish I want to firefight with Umbrella spec op to escape the ship. And it doesn't have to worry about Re timeline.

      The item hunting could get tedious, though. I missed the Rocket Launcher too and had to backtrack for it. I think the game has a very strong and unique atmosphere, which is one of its strong suits.

    Resident Evil has an affinity for ships. They should make a real prequel RE set in the early 1900's on an old school steam ocean liner; zombie Jack Dawson, ice blue tinted dead skin disfigured from 12,000 feet of water pressure, tiny sparkling ice crystals from the freezing water. Pop his head off with the 1887 lever action shotty

    RE:G-

    Somehow this sounds like a better RE game than one of the best ones. Oh wait, it is! REVELATIONS!

    Story aside, I really liked this game for it's combat system and really creepy pixel art. Of course, compared to the modern RE games it doesn't compare, but back in the day when there were only tank control/fixed camera horror games this was a lot more engaging for me. I enjoyed playing through it multiple times like I have on RE4/7/8 mostly because of the combat system.

    Okay. Serious question for someone who might have an answer. Years ago I was diving into random videos in facebook where I found the RE 3.5 video (the ghost house). But I also remember seeing a fully 3d version of what looked to be RE Gaiden in the style of RE4. And since then i cant find it again. I assume it was a fan render but idk, i feel crazy.

    • @PointReflex
      @PointReflex 6 лет назад +1

      As far as I remember about 10 years ago someone was pulling out a "remake" of RE Gaiden for PC but the project never took of due to the fact that in that time the jump from 2D to 3D was still a huge deal for indie developers. Hell when I started a sequel to an old game I originaly developed on RPG Maker, the only way to do a jump on 3D without knowing how to program was a software called "Entidad 3D"
      So if somebody tried to make a 3D Remake of Gaiden back when "FPS Creator" was alien technology for almost everyone, then I'm sure that nobody finished the project.
      But to finally respond to your question there is only one game that matches what you described and that game is Darkwork's (RIP), COLD FEAR.

    • @SabreXT
      @SabreXT 6 лет назад

      Was it not Revelations or Dead Aim? Both of those are Resident Evil games set on a cruise ship. There was also a game called Cold Fear that was like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space, but set on a ship.
      I could be wrong, but I think there was 2 RE 3.5 trailers? One in a mansion setting fighting dolls. And one on a giant airship/blip being chased by a guy with a hook hand.

    I was ready to give up on this game, until I found this neat glitch in the combat system. With the BOW Gas gun equipped, move into the run away option. While in the run away screen, so long as you don't complete the steps for running away, you can shoot an unlimited amount of BOW gas, letting you get through almost any fight in mere seconds. It didn't work very well on bosses, though.

    This "Resident Evil on a cruise ship" idea was re-used in Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS (as well as Dead Aim). I assume it's just coincidence, but it makes sense that Revelations was what this game was trying (and failed) to be.
    As for Nintendo's rules. I have no idea. Sometimes they are fine with the sex and/or violence, other times they aren't. Given the various censorship and not-censorship over the last 5-10 years, I'm guessing what is and isn't ok is determined by who happens to be in charge on any given day.
    And as for set up, can you use a splitter before feeding it into the capture card to reduce the delay?

    Wasn’t this game supposed to be a prequel to the first version of RE4? Leon was supposed to look for the cure to his infection on that sequel after this one’s ending. But then they went with infecting him with las Plagas in the game.
