    Right off the bat, I just wanna say, the way in which RE1 and RE2 played out with the two characters that are supposed to be kinda working together but not really, and they randomly split up and barely see each other at all, that makes a hell of a lot less sense than just having two separate stories in the first place. Because let's be honest, if you suddenly found yourself in the middle of a city infested with zombies, and you find another human that's not a complete moron, are you REALLY gonna split up? Is that REALLY the best way to survive?

    • @TheGreatGodPan

      Wouldn't happen, though, as much as resident evil has moved away from the mediocre shooters like 5 toward making serious horror games again, developers don't get why these games with their fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds were so good at the time, or why they've aged so well. I'd love this format of survival horror to come back, but I don't see it happening. Pre-rendered backgrounds have come back into fashion with isometric rpgs but that's about it really.

    • @TheGreatGodPan
      @TheGreatGodPan 6 лет назад +10

      Like a lot of courses a lot of them won't know shit anyway, it's like taking a sound engineering course and having some know-it-all teach you that the ultra-compressed modern production sound is good. A lot of people then end up working at studios and really have it in their heads that pop and metal produced this way objectively sounds better (even though it's technically really awfully produced music with zero dynamic range), and you won't be able to convince them otherwise, because some professor told them so. It's probably the same with game design. Like a lot of things that get more and more commercial and standardised, games and developers now overlook why these games worked so well back in the day, the sheer genius of their design despite the technical limitations. No they don't work well on a design level as shooter games, but they aren't meant to be shooter games, they are horror and survival games first and foremost, and the maps, camera angles and placing of enemies are all deliberate to increase the tension. Most modern games these days simply see you either being chased (Amnesia, Alien Isolation) or they rely on pure gore and visual horror. I'd say the last truly brilliant (and brilliantly designed) horror games were the project zero/fatal frame games, and despite their clunkiness, the siren games. Dead Space 1 and 2 were very good attempts though

Back when I first found out about it, I had just finished both campaigns, and I felt like I stumbled into a whole new world. RE2 was my first survival horror game ever, and obviously my first RE game (and helped me overcome my phobia of zombies!), so it will always have a nostalgic place in my heart. As such, I'm super stoked about this remake, especially seeing as how they appear to be mixing in elements of 1.5 into the classic 2 formula to please as many fans as possible (of course, there will always be the vocal minority of toxic fans who refuse to accept anything other than a direct 1:1 recreation of the original, but they're easy enough to ignore haha!) and it looks super slick for that.

    The first time I ever heard about Resident Evil I was in 5th grade (1998) and we had these magazines that covered science and social studies. One discussed video games and violence (predictably) and had a screenshot of the room from 5:25 in it with the caption "Things get ugly in Resident Evil" or something along those lines. Knowing that the screen grab was of the police station in 1.5, I can finally stop questioning why I never recognized that background. It also confirms my two suspicions that 1, they didn't really play Resident Evil and 2, they did not really know what they were talking about. Also I love your retrospectives, they were my main reason for subscribing and binge watching them all endlessly.

    I always was disappointed that the crawling part of the zombies was removed considering how interesting a game mechanic it was. You showed it in the video, how they crawled under the shutters as well as the shotgun blasts, but just the fact that if one went for the easier leg shot you were "rewarded" with having to either shoot or run away from the still alive enemy made it much more of a survival horror. It likely was removed for technical reasons but I really thought it was a shame they took away a fun and fair balancing mechanic.

    As intriguing as this prototype footage can be, I’ve always found it rather strange how fans seem to be very attached to Elza Walker and “want her back” when she is quite literally Claire. Not just that, but people are commenting how this game looks better, more interesting, even “credible” and want it to be officially released... Kind of odd.
    All is known about the script is merely small details from the leaks. However, it was deemed as uninteresting, not scary and lacking of depth and coherence according to Okamoto, Sugimura and even Kamiya (he now happily admits he is relieved it was cancelled). The visuals were too “neon-ish” and Hollywood looking for what is supposed to be an authentic horror experience. Isn't that what everyone wants the franchise to be? Sugimura rewrote the story with the purpose of making it engaging, connected to the first entry and giving supporting characters, such as Ada and Sherry, plot relevance instead of being one-dimensional like they were in 1.5. Not to mention, bringing the iconic T-102 Tyrant into the setting.
    While I agree it would've been cool to have an expanded armoury and the ability to rip zombies in half, I disagree with people saying the final product is lacking. Personally, the fact that the members of S.T.A.R.S. were ridiculed and persecuted, while the chief of police has secret ties with Umbrella is a far more fascinating narrative. The franchise is all about being evil after all.
    I am relieved Resident Evil 2 turned out to be the game we all know and love. I trust the team’s decision of starting back from zero. Thanks to that, we also got “The 4th Survivor” mode.

      Appreciate your take on this. I think people can often get really swept up by the "what could have been" emotion. The Resident Evil 2 we did get was meant to be: it's one of the best games of all-time, and a personal favorite of so, so many fans. I also think this playable bit of the game fits nicely into the speculative lore of the series--it's fun to get to see what was, imagine what would have been and discuss and share. But I do agree, and think it's a bit of stretch to say that what we see here should have dethroned what we actually did get in RE2.

    Even if I really like RE2, I readily admit that the universe created for RE1.5 seems to me a bit more interesting, more credible (as much as a RE can be, of course), the atmosphere that arises seems to me closer to the works of Romero, much more visceral and agonizing, like a mirror distorting our own reality.
    The game had very good ideas such as the armor to wear that was damaged during the fighting, the way that Leon and Elza hold their weapons and more widely the environment, I prefer the police station of 1.5 to that of RE2 for example .
    Anyway thank you for this video.

    I came here after seeing a video about the new clothes that the remade version of RE2 was inspired by the RE1.5 character designs. You bringing up the visual damage models reminded me about the visual damage seen in the E3 demo of the remade version. Thats really impressive that they are going back to their old drawing board to improve the gameplay and the visual style of the remake.

    I know you here it over and over again, but I have to say thank you for uploading this. I immediately subscribed to your channel. The ps1 was my first game system, and resident evil 1 was one of the first and last games I remember my father playing. We indulged in the game during the daytime on the weekends. I'll never forget beating the game with him. And when I watched this I just had a chill down my spine, thinking of those memories with my dad. I love resident evil. He said what he remembers the most is trying to find those fucking ink ribbons 🤣 thank you again for sharing your thoughts on this game!

    I share the same exact feelings about 1.5 as you. Back during the PSX days, I subscribed to Playstation Underground and Sony would send those double CD packs with demos and info on upcoming titles (I still have all of those discs!). I can remember getting the disc set that had the first footage of this game, I must have watched it 100 times! Later on, I modded my Playstation and started tracking down imports, betas, basically anything unreleased or rare... RE 1.5 was always my holy grail. I found a few games that were supposed to be RE 1.5 but ended up being early builds of the official RE2. It's so awesome to see this as playable. The PSX days were definitely an amazing time to be into gaming!

    • @AvalancheReviews

      Yeah, the ps1 era was absolute most fun time to be into games. I also associate 1.5 with the early days of the internet. Damn awesome time to be alive back then! Looking up into on games in development felt so fucking cool! Nowadays it's just an everyday thing.

    I was actually born around the time this game came out, but I didn't get the chance to play the game until Middle School, till then, my first foray into RE was through an old let's play of RE 5, I then watched his RE 4 let's play, and then his let's play of the remake. I actually watched let's plays of the Resident Evil games before I actually played one, and the first one I played was none other than RE 1, the original. Then it was RE 2, but I actually never finished the original RE 3 because I was a fool and I tried to fight Nemesis on my first playthrough because I knew about the item drops. I didn't get far in Code Veronica, 0, and Remake for different reasons. Code Veronica, because I actually got too stressed, 0 because of the item management, and Remake was because I was nervous about the crimson heads. It wasn't until recently, that I went back and played the RE games I didn't beat. Except for 3. So, even though I got into it through the action era of the series, I actually played the classic ones first, so I actually have an appreciation for both types of games.//

    I didn't know about the medicines. That's amazing, because in Road Fever (our classic-RE-style game), we use six medicines that can be combined for various results. It was based mostly on RE3's gunpowder, but the link to RE1.5 is very welcome. It reïnforces my confidence that I'm thinking like a RE developer.

      Another one is the grenades. Before I even knew that was in RE1.5, we decided to use rudimentary nail grenades (glass bottle with gunpowder, nails, cloth, and fire). I would absolutely love to play a finished version of this game with the same exact ps1 graphics. Capcom has almost come back to their glory days of the 80s to early 2000s with resident evil 7 mega man 11 devil may cry 5 and by the looks of it, a freaking spectacular re-imagination of resident evil 2. I remember surfing the web in 2003 for hours until late at night, searching more and more info about this RE 1.5. Tons of webs, blogs, Bioflames, low res images, low quality videos, etc. It all fascinated me. And it felt like an unreachable dream. When the beta was leaked, I was in shock. Playing it feels like you said: as if I were stranded in a foreign place which never existed. Like nostalgia from a game I never played. It's like a mystical experience. Good thing a fan community is cleaning it all and getting it to work. Though, I don't think the game could ever be finished further of its content. So, part of "what if" will always remain as a mystery.

  • @PIB2000

    It's actually strange to notice how some of the ideas here were recycled into the RE2 remake, like being able to dismember zombies, the cold color scheme some of the RPD's rooms have, and characters showing physical damage.

    • @thermonuclearcollider4418
      @thermonuclearcollider4418 5 лет назад +1

      They actually kept a lot of 1.5 in mind, imho. The RPD basement in the remake it's essentially the same with some tweaks: the shooting range it's straight out of 1.5 with the addition of a little room. The parking lot is the one from the "lost game" as well: the biggest difference being that the entrance is blocked by some vans and it doesn't lead anywhere else, whereas in the remake you can reach the prison with Leon (and that too it's an upgraded version of the one in 1.5) or Chief Irons' private quarters with Claire - plus, there's the manhole leading to the sewers. The morgue and the kennel are also very similar, and so is the idea of the zombie dogs coming out of the air vents. They definitely didn't take much from the actual RE2 when it came to designing that part of the game. Also, William calling for Sherry is something unique to 1.5 (in the released game, Sherry says she heard her father calling for her, but we never do) and so it's him mutating in real time during the first boss fight - which is something that Mikami and Kamiya were stressing out in the original press interviews, before they scrapped the game (most translations have them saying "we're gonna have changing phantoms", since, as far as I know, the Japanese word for "monster" is rather ambiguous to translate). Oh, yeah the shutters are straight out of 1.5 as well.

    • @PIB2000
      @PIB2000 5 лет назад

      @@thermonuclearcollider4418 So, in a sense, the remake is just as much a remake of 1.5 as it is of 2.

    • @thermonuclearcollider4418
      @thermonuclearcollider4418 5 лет назад +2

      @@PIB2000 well, not really: it's a remake of RE2. But it does acknowledge 1.5's existence, that's for sure. Some things (like the precinct basement) were definitely put there to please the hardcore fans. Some others (like William mutating during the first fight), might've been recycling discarded ideas - the directors (there's two of them) of RE2 are senior CAPCOM staffers and have been working on the franchise since the '90 if I am not mistaken - there's a video of them meeting with Kamiya and discussing the games: they are the same age and you can tell they have been knowing each other for quite some time.

    It sucks that something like this would never happen in the modern age of game development. You could never scrap a triple a game that far in development so that you could eventually release a totally new game that would go on to be an all timer. The games industry nowadays is in the same place as the movie industry, games are made to check off feature lists to appease the board instead of focusing on the best possible game design.

    I'm glad they didn't include that huge amount of weapons in the final game. I think one of the keys of survival horror is that it doesn't allow you to use many weapons, being even harder to face the danger.
    I'm also impressed they were initially planning to allow the players to blow zombie legs/arms off since they have implemented that aspect in the upcoming remake. It's so cool they've taken inspiration from RE1.5 for the RE2 Remake!!

    Thank you Jared, this was a very illuminating video, and also very great alongside all your other Resident Evil Retrospectives. I'm actually glad they made the changes they did, especially the addition of revamping the police station from something drab to a more gothic structure of an ex-art gallery. Elza Walker probably would've been an interesting character but having Claire and that connection to Chris made the continuation better as well in my humble opinion.

      I agree, they went in the right direction with 2. I still absolutely love 1.5's look, but I think that's because it's so different. If I wouldn't have had a finished version to compare it to, I might not like it as much.

      I'm eager to try it. RE2 is my favourite, and going back and playing them all, I'm always comparing whichever RE I'm playing to 2. Can't wait for the remake!

    What keeps bugging me about Resident Evil 1.5 is the plot and story, apparently Irons was a good guy that would probably sacrifice himself, Marvin would survive until the end, Ada was upfront with working with Umbrella, the story apparently didn't have an antagonist other than Birkin.
    If we could only have the full script of the 1.5 story...

    Man that was funny! Im so hyped about the remake of Resident Evil 2 (My favourite part of the series) and i just stumbled upon this video. I remember the leaked footage of RE1.5 back in the days and how excited I was. Haha. This video made my day. Gonna go look for the build.

    It's been said a million times I'm sure, but this *should* have been the successor to Resident Evil. What we got was brilliant don't get me wrong, but this version just has you feeling some type of way.

    Well done - Great job conveying the hidden treasure that is Resident Evil 1.5. Though I enjoy what ultimately became RE2, I also wish 1.5 could have been released as it looks to exist in a parallel universe to what is currently RE.
    Wouldn’t it be great if Capcom finished 1.5 and released it in the near future?! That would make the perfect teaser to the upcoming remake

    Elza Walker is a brunette on her passport but a blonde in real life. Also the Desert Eagle (which both characters can use) has the recoil of a 9mm.

    This was a great video. I too share many of the same feelings toward this prototype as you do.
    I don't remember where, but there was a hint dropped (by a major Capcom team member) that this prototype may one day see an officially playable version. Now that we can reasonably expect an RE2 Remake, maybe, just maybe they'll include this prototype as an extra content. Which I consider that to be a possible scenario because with the release of RE Zero HD, they included an outfit that came from the N64 prototype version of Rebecca Chambers. What do y'all think?

      +Late Night with NateWolf I would love to see that happen, but capcom is wayyyyy too good of bad decision making, for me to give them that kind of credit. I will however, cross my fingers and hope.

      Sorry, just now seeing this. For some reason youtube hasn't been notifying me of replies to my comments. If they don't add a playable prototype, i hope they at least make Elza Walker a playable costume to represent that prototype like RE Zero did with the white beret version of Rebecca.
