    I think the Chronicles games were actually a good way to have a crash course through the lore of the series, as well as a fun game to play with friends. I sure as hell did enjoy playing it with my girlfriend on her Wii. 😁
    I do wish these games would make a comeback in the arcades since House of the Dead had recently made it's own return in the arcades.

    • @batmangovno
      @batmangovno 6 лет назад +2

      Arcades aren't as good as they used to be. In the early 90s SEGA was developing the fastest 3D machines with a goddamn jet plane manufacturer, now they are just PCs. Makes them easier to access though, TeknoParrot can launch some Taito and Namco machines which is really cool.

    • @KamenRider1

      Immense Data
      I'm from the Philippines and Arcades here are alive and well due to the fact that a majority of the population have little interest in investing in gaming hardware .
      However, I am aware of the state of Arcades in the U.S. via my peers and I am very saddened to know the state they're in now.
      Personally, I prefer meeting people from different walks of life in an arcade. It's how I met my (aforementioned) girlfriend via playing a couple of rounds of Tekken 6 with her at Quantum Arcade Baguio City. Now I have a training partner in Shotokan Karate and Arnis, as well as someone to play games with. 😁

      while seeing an arcade revive would be really cool I like to think that they should port on-rails to the pc since using a mouse can be just as good as a gun controller. At lease the classics. That's just my opinion.

    The cursor "lag" is actually a smoothing effect added to all games to mask the fact that in reality the wiimote is kinda jumpy (something that is only noticeable when using the wiimote on PC with an adapter), but playing on the machine itself it is a non issue. Also, there's a very simple trick to land lots of headshots in this game: Aim a bit over the head, so when you press the trigger, the pointer goes down by a notch because of your own motion and you get a perfect headshot every single time. Also, last but not least, the game "punishes" you if miss and you don't hit anything "hitable", so there's a cooldown time period during which you cannot shoot immediately again, but if you keep choosing your targets, yu can blast with continuous fire. If you keep these things in mind the game becomes pretty enjoyable.

    The side stories and Umbrella's End bring more to the table when it comes to additional lore: Wesker conspiring with Birkin to leave Umbrella, how Rebecca and Richard are found together in game 1 (as Chris), and I could go on; I enjoyed those. What really gets my liking of it over Darkside is that instead of having only 1 choice for a shotgun, machine gun, grenade launcher, magnum and Rocket Launcher: there are 3 of each.

    As I remember hearing it, the 3D environments in the RE1 and RE0 portions of the game were based not on the pre-rendered backgrounds but on the actual 3D assets created during the production of the game, i.e. the environments they took "snapshots" of to create those backgrounds. It would seem Capcom had abandoned the old-school mentality of deleting excess data after a game project is completed, a relic of an age when storage space was a much more limited resource, and had simply kept those assets around in case they wanted to re-use them for something.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      Yeah, these assets are available on-line and there has been a lot of discussion amongst 3D modeller RE fans (like myself) that's led to some interesting revelations. Can't remember anything off the top of my head but I'm sure it's easy enough to find if you dig a bit.

    I doubt many others can say this but this was actually one of my first ever RE games and it got me really interested in the stories of the classic RE games which made me go get and play them all afterwards. As I have said about all my other favorite RE games, this is a ton of fun to play co-op with someone. Especially if you want to share your love of RE with someone who definitely would not enjoy classic RE. I also really do feel like the variety of weapons needs to be praised.

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz 5 лет назад +5

    Actually both issues you've identified are fairly common among Wii's lightgun games. One is that the software averages the sensor input over multiple frames exactly in order to eliminate noise and allow you to precisely line up nearly pixel perfect shots, and other that the area mapped to the screen is smaller than the range of optical sensor motion. I think if you train to decelerate smoothly while lining up the shot, you will find it a lot less offensive.
    It is to be kept in mind that the sensor resolution is only 128x64 pixels from which it divines up to 4 (generally 2) optical target positions at 1024x768 resolution; effectively higher resolution comes about by making the optics fairly blurry and comparing the brightness of neighbouring pixels, which means quite a few pixels of deviation depending on individual pixel noise are possible.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 лет назад +2

      That's interesting as hell. It seems like some devs were better at mitigating these issues, than capcom, since I've played some wii shooters that controlled much better than this.

  • @brunomilocchi3897
    @brunomilocchi3897 6 лет назад +14

    I think that motion control in and of itself is totally fine. The problem lies on the people that Just aren't used to use It and already think that standard control is better before trying It.
    I played many motion control games, and heck my favorite games are centered around motion control (Metroid Prime Trilogy). I can totally agree on the motion control not fitting with QTEs but other than that, saying that Motion control is bad because it's Motion control is simply a dumb internet trend

    I played this on the Wii and I enjoyed it for the most part. It was a nice nostalgic look back on the series. I sadly don’t have my copy anymore. My brother had borrowed it along with my Wii gun accessory - one of those plastic models you slide the Wiimote into - and lost them both. I’ll need to readd it to my collection sometime.

    The best way to play Umbrella and Darkside was to use one of those gun like attatchments for the wii-mote, prefferibly a third party one, those were way better than the Nintendo official.

    When this game came out I bought it and played it with my buddy, as we both shared massive love for the OG RE series and enjoyed lightgun arcade cabinets. The game isn't perfect but we played it so much, always trying to "speedrun" the chapters and get the highest rank. After awhile we play to see who would kill the most and even try to steal the weapons and health from each other.

    Although I love your retrospective I have to disagree with you this one time even tho I have agreed with almost everything in the entire retrospective so far but I found this game incredibly fun and accessible with its co-op being one of its biggest draws maybe it’s the nostalgia of me having couch co-op with my best friend but I still feel this is a great way to introduce new people who quickly become new fans of the series so that being said I felt the built in lag was more of a skill curve built in the wii as a whole was made to be an easy to handle console and I really felt like a badass when I would get into a rhythm of headshots and critical hits in the game can’t wait for the next one sir I’m always looking forward to your videos and I’m gonna be bummed as hell once your done with the retrospective

  • @iamcarpetpython
    @iamcarpetpython 6 лет назад +9

    First, I would have to strongly disagree with the generally negative review of this game. Umbrella and dark side chronicles weren't meant to be new installments in the RE series gameplay and story, but a parallel and recap covering the previous games, and where as the previous games were very in depth one player games, these were easy to jump into games that you can play multiplayer with your friends that both RE newcomers and veterans alike can enjoy. Many of the criticisms, like the maps not matching in my opinion are unfair since the older games had such cramped environments, while this is a rail shooter, and as a collector of rail shooters, I would have to also disagree that this game is a bad rail shooter. That said, I do appreciate tge in depth analysis of the details about the game.
    Second, I'd like to add, for anyone playing these on the wii, use the plain wiimote with the numchuck thing, the guns (even the one made specifically for umbrella chronicles suck.
    Third, in light of the control issues mentioned, I'd like to say, one feature that would have made these games better would have been a button that sent your cursor back to center when it got all lost jumbled in one of the corners of the screen.
    Thanks for posting. I'll keep watching :-)

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +2

      Glad you liked the analytical aspect of it, and I can totally admit, the negativity might come from me being so bad at rail shooters. I may have read your comment wrong, but in case I didn't I wanted to make sure to mention that the comments about the devs wanting to make this a new entry in the series, were in regard to the early planning stages of the game. I wasn't trying to say that this was meant to be a new entry.

    Also quick note. Some of the areas early in the RE3 levels are actually areas from the stage "Outbreak" from Resident Evil Outbreak. The street with the cop cars, the little ally way behind the 2 big wooden doors in the same area, Apple Inn and all that such. Straight from Resident Evil Outbreak.

    There's nothing suboptimal about using a wiimote to aim in a rail shooter. That controller and that genre are _tailor made_ for each other. Point at thing you want to shoot, shoot until it dies. Could not be simpler or more intuitive.
    That's why the best House of the Dead games are all Wii, and why the two RE Chronicles games rule.
    Plus, hey, RE is actually kind of scary when you're in first person and can't run away from the enemies.
    Darkside is definitely superior though. I love these kinds of games, and the only reason I *ever* go back to UC is to play Ada's scenario Death's Door. That level rules.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад

      The sub optimal part wasn't exactly the idea of using the wiimote to point and shoot. It was the crappy way that the controller itself tracked motion, and on top of that, the lag or compensation present in this game specifically. The wii was pretty infamous for pioneering IR LED motion tracking, but not exactly handling it as well as they could have.

    In Resident Evil Outbreak File 2, you will be in the police station in a later scenario and be able to go to the garage. Once you reach it there's a crate you can push out of the way on the far left wall, that reveals a hole that leads straight to the underground stairway outside of the police station front entrance. I enjoyed seeing that they Incorporated that into their ham-handed remake of Resident Evil 3's storyline

    Hmmm, develop a game for normie Wii players that's not complicated, yet port over RE4 and make the Wii Edition in 2007, the prior year (which was one of the best ports). Classic Mid-aughts Capcom doublespeak trash. They wanted to make this game this way It was the quickest way to money.

    At the core of the interface problem in this game is the idea that one must simulate a real object through the interface. That might make sense with a mouse, but the wiimote already has mass. You see VR games struggle with this to this day.

    Some of the waggling and the QTEs were a mess at times but the actual tracking of the Wiimote was good. As good as the good rail shooters on the Wii that is. I played the game with someone who never played such games. He immediately got it and nailed his shots pretty well too.
    I am also sure that the mediocre Nemesis "adaptation" ended up reusing big chunks of Outbreak level portions. Apple Inn, J's Bar, the car park. Etc. There are even unused Outbreak assets in the code of UC that this game doesn´t feature either.
    Thank god that DC got a higher budget. UC has the better scenarios but polish is still king. Still, i liked both games and would like to see this Gun Survivor reboot to continue in VR.

    • @UnicornStorm
      @UnicornStorm 6 лет назад +1

      I also had a pretty good headshot rate with this game on the wii. I also never heard anyone complain about motion controls in a rail shooter. Those complains are mostly leveled at waggling the wiimote around, not aiming a gun.... Though I had some problems with the QTEs, because I couldn't clearly recognize the symbols that fast.

      I don't know there is definitely a chance it's just me, but after playing darkside chronicles, I don't think it is. That game doesn't have the weird acceleration on the pointer, and it plays sooooo much better because of it. I think it may have less slowdown as well, which could help.

    At that 9:50 mark where you talk about where they pulled RE3 map from, it looks ALOT like the latter half of the Resident Evil Outbreak game's first chapter. Where you escape with that cop and have to open the oil tanker and set the zombie on fire, then jump into the river nearby.

    Ok, I have to ask. How do you hold you're wiimote when aiming? And how are you aiming? Are you focusing on your wiimote or are you focusing on the cursor? Also what kind of TV are you playing on?
    When I played, it was on an old standard 30", I focused on the cursor when aiming and I shot from the hip (holding controller against my hip to steady aim), Nunchuck to use the knife and it was very responsive, accurate and easy to control, even with the insane camera of Darkside Chronicles.

    I killed this game on the wii but I'm a big rail shooter fan. If you regularly play shooting games at arcades you often have to compensate for slightly off target shots or latency so any of that, which wasnt super noticeable, didnt bug me. Also, when the zombies rear back to hit you, you can knock them back with a well timed knife swipe without taking damage.

    I honestly enjoyed both this and Darkside. It's not like the games didn't have their extremely frustrating parts, but Darksiders is definitely the stronger title, since not only could you actually carry herbs, but there weren't 3 different variants of each weapon type, allowing you to focus on upgrading one, not to mention how there aren't 3 each with their own ammo type.

    As a man who grew up with Point Blank games, regularly finished arcade shooters with just one coin, I can tell you that the Wiimote gives you a shit ton of leeway.
    It even gives us a crosshair, I just can't understand people who get less than 80% headshots, it's a bit harder in Chronicles 2 though.

    Just finished this game, and two things I want to add.
    1 - I think what little content has been added actually does a decent job of answering some loose plot threads of the older games, of which there are many. Nothing that can't be looked up in a wiki, but cool nonetheless.
    2 - The frame rate in the PS3 version is BAD. Sometimes it sustains 30, but it will often dip waaay down, to the point where it feels unplayable on a controller.

    The only noticeable compliment is that the creep factor felt elevated a bit because of the first person perspective when confronted by some enemies.
