Well, we have finally got to the boulder punching phenomenon that is Resident Evil 5. A game that is not afraid to wear its influences on its shoulder. Is it possible for a game to followup the success of Resident evil 4???? Let's find out on the Resident Evil Retrospective!

Sheva's shoulder tattoo means 'hero' in Swahili.
This is the first Resident Evil game where all previous games are referenced, in so much as upon completing the game, a history of Resident Evil is unlocked detailing the past 70 years. This means that it is finally explicitly confirmed that the survivors of Resident Evil (1996)/Resident Evil (2002) were Chris, Jill, Barry, Brad and Rebecca, and that the level "Umbrella's End" from Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (2007) is officially considered canon.
This game was the first Resident Evil to be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Technically, when it came out, this was Resident Evil 7, because when Resident Evil Zero (2002) chronologically became the first one in the series, this made Resident Evil: Code: Veronica (2000) the fifth and Resident Evil 4 (2005) the sixth. With the later release of Resident Evil: Revelations (2012) (which takes place between Resident Evil 4 and 5), this game technically became Resident Evil 8.
The returning enemies of Resident Evil 4 (2005)'s new line of enemies are: chainsaw users, Gatling Gun users and a giant creature.
The first appearance of Sheva Alomar.
First Resident Evil game presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound.
This is the first Resident Evil game where you earn PlayStaton 3 trophies and Xbox points for accomplishments.
The infinite ammo unlocked in the main game isn't transferable in the "Lost In Nightmare" and "Desperate Escape" scenario.
This is the first time that Jill Valentine is seen as a blond with a different hair style, instead of a brunette with her hair down to the sides. The same change in appearance was carried over into the movie adaptations of the series.
Like the other playable characters in the game, Albert Wesker can also perform physical attacks on stunned enemies. One of these attacks is called "Tiger Uppercut" - a reference to a special move from the Street Fighter series, a game also developed and published by Capcom.
This is the first main Resident Evil game where the subtitles are enabled during cut-scenes. All the previous games had none or a very limited amount of subtitles.

Also the main reason Chris got so dang buff and strong was, rewatch the ending of Code Veronica when Chris and Wesker fight you can see Chris just gets tossed around and nearly dies from a few punches. A few years later when he and Jill encounter him at the Spencer estate Chris can kind of hold his own now. So it makes sense for Chris to constantly keep upping his strength as he wants to avenge the death of his fellow Stars comrades and Jill. The man's got a lot of anger issues I think I would too if I watched all my friends die from viral infected freaks and one of them still alive causing more outbreaks and problems

The problem is; relative to the 1st and 2nd world the 3rd world doesn't get nearly as much journalistic coverage or written/filmed works in general. Even the western nations that had colonies there dont want you to look into it too much. As a westerner, you have to have. an overriding interest in Africa to suss out the worthwhile and significant knowledge. Just ask any westerner about mansa musa or the Songhai empire and observe their befuddled expression. Dark is the best word for Africa its a dark spot on many maps of people's knowledge and if you take the time to look into it, it only gets darker with how excessively horrible and sad most of the knowledge you find is.

It’s definitely an American thing. I grew up in a heavily Chinese neighbourhood and let me tell you a lot of Chinese and Japanese people hate it when Americans use “Asian” to group them together. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Laotian and Philipino people don’t like being lumped together as one big collective group. I'm unsure that Sheva's devotion is too out of touch with reality. Remember, these two are "soldiers" going through a pretty fubar situation. Circumstances like that usually forge deep and lasting camaraderies fast. Even normal people who come out of something horrible together end up with a deepened connection. Unless somehow they hated each other from the get go and despite that somehow miraculously managed to get out of said hellhole together in one piece, but that seems like reaching. Also, this is a videogame. There isn't a ton of time for character development. You have to rush things a little.

A first level that throws your character into a 'hold off and survive' event against a large mob of enemies? That is almost a carbon copy. A semi-common chainsaw wielding enemy that one shots you. "The game is racist because you play a white guy and all your enemies are black guys"
This isn't true. Even discounting named evil characters, the standard enemy type has white variants. Find any mob in the game during gameplay, and you'll find white enemies in that mob. Its not even very hard. Its like 7 out of 10 enemies are black, and the rest are white. Its almost as if its a reflection of the population demographics of the setting.

I'm definitely surprised by your opinion on RE5, but in a good way. RE5 seems to get way too much hate for being a pretty solid overall game, but I definitely felt RE4 had better pacing and better level design (offering more variety, and more fun sandbox-like "arenas"). I think the partner system in RE5 makes the game far more frustrating, especially when Sheva's AI can't seem to handle professional mode at all. Mercenaries mode was wonderful, though. The little bit of tweaks to RE4's combat really shine in this mode. Because of Mercenaries, RE5 was easily my most played game on the 360. Hey, remember when RE games offered major unlockable game modes in the base game? RE7 certainly forgot...
As for your social commentary... I was surprised you included it because of how divisive it could be to your viewerbase. I agree, though. RE5 clearly isn't a racist game for anyone who plays it.
Anyway, RE6 is next. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on it. I have trouble predicting your opinions in this retrospective, which is what is keeping it so exciting for me!

as much as I loved re7 I always felt like Capcom not adding anything extra after you bet the game(without counting madhouse) was a big letdown, yes you get some arcade modes with the dlcs, but still, IMO one of the best parts of resident evil games are those extra game modes that you get, either mercenaries or raid mode or battle game/extreme battle

Good comment here, and it's so funny to see you mention how this was your "most played" 360 game due to Mercenaries. MAN, LET ME TELL YOU - I was still living at home when this came out for 360, and I would play mercs so much I shit you not I would catch my mom humming the merc's level music. And my mom hates videogames. So funny.
Also, playing Professional with AI Sheva ruined it for me - I had to stop at the Jill/Wesker fight because she would get one-shot time and time again.
I bought RE5 for PC on a steam sale and went through it two more times, and mercenaries and mercs reunion is simply amazing especially when you play No Mercy. Cobra striking majinis for dayyyyys "hheeeeuurgh- yeeeuuuh!"

There is a cannon reason to Chris' new body builder physique in RE5. It was after his last confrontation with Wesker, in which he was thrown around like a rag doll, and to his knowledge, cost Jill her life. Wracked with guilt over that last battle he started preparing for the day when he would face Wesker again. Hence the big muscles.

But was convinced by Chris who wants to keep going to find out what happened to Jill, Sheva would even re affirmed with Chris if the Woman in the Data file was Jill as she was very adamant initially they should both leave the place thinking they were over there head. However with Chris wanting to continue the both decide to press on anyways as they were realizing they were at that point knee deep in something much bigger and the fact Sheva saw it as her people who were dying here and saw that its best she go with Chris given the situation there in opts to work with Chris to get to the bottom of it.

In RE4 you had to rely on yourself and yourself only (with only a few exceptions) while in RE5 you spend the whole game with a (AI or not) buddy helping you out, the atmosphere was very different (RE5 is pretty moody but I'd argue that RE4 is a lot more grim looking in its environment, or at least it's very different), it had one of the best inventory system of all time, controls that were intended to be a bit stiff like the older games to add tension when you're chased by ennemies (the strafing changed that), it had yellow herbs that gave a nice feeling of progression, the marchand (and its weird minigame), typewriters and regeneradors
While I love RE4 I also like RE5 a lot, I'd say it's one of the best coop game of all time imo and I will always defend it but for very different reasons and I personally can see why some people didn't like it

"Spanish people in Europe are far from Caucasian" Well, that's a sticky topic to broach but I feel like you've the confidence that stems from either knowing a topic well or not realizing how sticky a topic it is in actuality. We have to ask ourselves questions like "What are the 'rules' for being 'Caucasian'?" We have to journey into the various rationales regarding the topic. If Spanish people aren't 'Caucasian' then are Italians not Caucasian either? Especially not Sicilians or other Southern Italians, what about South-East Europe or the Levant? When does the line get drawn? Typically, Italians in the US are considered 'White' but this hasn't always been the case - same with people from Spain or Eastern-Europe - it's very much politicized - so I have to ask, what exactly do you mean by the aforementioned statement "Spanish people in Europe are far from Caucasian" ? Even in the 19th and 20th centuries - when politically-motivated anthropologists attempted to separate "Mediterraneans" into their own 'racial sub-group' in order to justify their prejudice (in addition to out of a misguided interest in the subject in general besides outright, conscious prejudice), it was still categorized within the confines of the "Caucasian" race - if those eternally misguided academics were able to see no other place for these people but under the banner of "Caucasian" (despite their best attempts at putting fences up WITHIN the confines of the over-arching "Race") - I am incredible curious as to your reasoning for excluding them. If you'll indulge my curiosity. I just want to know what I am if not Caucasian anymore.

While I feel the allegations of racism and bigotry were absolutely over-blown, I also feel that the game did little to depict Africa as a varied, layered, and absolutely immense continent rather than one homogeneous place of primal people with grass skirts and spears (just using an example shown within the video) or crumbling streets that could be easily extracted out of Black Hawk Down. Nearly all games that depict Africa do it in this way, and in truth much of media (films, literature, etc) do this also - dating all the way back to Heart of Darkness and before. However, the reason I even state this concerning this one game in particular is because of the impression it gave me upon first playing it. Some of Sheva's first words to Chris, welcoming him, isn't something like "Welcome to Mogadishu" or "Johannesburg" or even "Welcome to Kenya" - she says "Welcome to *Africa* " and as trivial as it sounds it was a first impression that made me able to consider the rest of the game through this mindset, to at least understand with the people crying foul if definitely not agreeing with them. For the record, I do not think Capcom were racist or bigoted in their depiction of Africa - no, but I would go out on a limb and say they were culturally ignorant, likely unconsciously, and that's actually not surprising at all because even though Africa is an incredibly immense and varied continent we only hear about the nasty bits. So, I almost don't fault Capcom for this ignorance. It is Japan, after all, it would almost be culturally ignorant of myself to assume a Japanese game company would go to the same lengths a European or (especially) American one would in order to pro-actively stymie any potential race or culture-based heckling. MGS:TPP used a semi-similar setting but it localized it, it didn't say "This is Africa" it gave a specific location and a specific conflict/time-frame and so this didn't strike me as nearly as culturally (if honestly, not just geographically/anthropologically) ignorant. That's not a trivial distinction, it actually makes a world of difference. It did in my case, and I'm not exactly one prone to political flights of fancy - I'm very much methodical in coming to stances and viewpoints. So yeah, Capcom exercised all of the nuance and depth we've come to expect from the plot of a Resident Evil game. That's pretty much it. In attempting to co-opt some of that "Hollywood" cinematic quality they also borrowed a notably "Hollywood" trope - Africa, the country.
To be honest, though, I actually really liked the setting of Resi 5 - I felt it was something distinct from what I'd come to expect from a Resident Evil title. It was window dressing but it was nice window dressing. Vibrant.

    • @AvalancheReviews

I can agree with this completely. Capcom was clearly uneducated on this subject and that shown through the dialouge. I think we both agree there was no ill intent, and I also agree that Africa was a killer song for the game.

No ill intent at all. I honestly think a lot of that sort of ignorance stemmed from a wider societal trend regarding Africa, and Capcom's desire to conjure up that 'Hollywood', 'blockbuster cinema' vibe for the game's emphasis on action over horror. "The big-fuck movies show a very narrow view of Africa, so we gotta do that, too" sorta that. That's my theory, anyway. But hey, I appreciate you taking the time to not only read my long-ass comments but to thoughtfully respond to them, as well. I just came across this channel and I think this is going to be beginning of a beautiful 'content creator-consumer' relationship. ;P

Sometimes people think that by saying "this is racist" is like you want them in jail, you're comparing them to KKK hatred or sh*t like that, but in fact the racist callout is also used to "everything that reinforces that bad image" you described. It's like a bar that goes from 1 to 10 and this stereotypical bad looking approach is "2/10 racist". I'd totally agree that it's more like ignorance than ill intent, however this should not be used as an excuse in my opinion. 21st century, internet and all.... you make a game that takes place in a real world scenario, so could you just bother a little bit to research instead of using an stereotype of tribal/slum black people, you know? :/
I'm from Brazil and it really made me sad when people from US and Europe (when I was abroad) learned about it and started to talk things like samba, football and violence.... or asked me how it is to live in the rain forest, with nature, crystals, monkeys and stuff.... I live in the biggest city of the country (sigh...). It all reinforces that 3rd world pov which is bad. If you make this into a game that sells thousands, there will be thousands of people getting this wrong message.
Other than that, excellent review! Really digging the channel content, kinda binge watching them :P

The game sucks because it lacks the gameplay depth from 4. In 4, there were plenty of ways to dispatch and circumvent enemies, each one being equally viable depending on the situation. In 5, it's a matter of how fast you can shoot and aim. It's another mindless shooter that doesn't compare to dedicated shooters like Vanquish, another game directed by Mikami.

5 is better in every way except it isn't open world. 4 could have been 5 in every way, but nobody wanted to work in co-op, which would fit into the story just fine, and they didn't want to add optional chapters. Would have done wonders for the game.

RE5 was originally supposed to be a single-player game until all the racist allegations. They toyed around with the thought of Barry being Chris's partner, but that was probably just during certain parts of the game. Sheva was originally a militia soldier who showed up once or twice.
The merchant was also supposed to appear, but was cut. Twas unfortunate. Also, 5 doesnt take place a decade after 4. It was only about 5 years.

I just checked my notes, and I was supposed to say half a decade. Not sure how I didn't catch that. Good eye. I think having the merchant would've helped the game feel less sectioned off. Kind of like it wasn't a level based deal.

From a story standpoint, it’s the best story in the series. It’s an epic conclusion to a story arc that started in the first game. The voice acting also helped it a lot too. You can feel the emotion just oozing off the characters in this game, especially in the Boss battle with Jill. It’s a shame that they never continue Jill’s newer story arc in RE6. Personally I prefer 5 over 4, but that's just me not really getting what was appealing in 4. For me 4 had the most out of place story, and yes, even compared to 6 (which I'm not a big fan of, but more of that when you post part 6 hehe). I think playing this game co-op is a blast, but I do get frustrated playing with an AI. I think RE nailed it down the line with the Revelations series, so I guess there's that. I do feel that 5 is the least scary in terms of the main entries though. That might be why some people hate it. Personally, I've never met anyone that says they're a big fan of RE that hates this game. I kiiiind of think a lot of people haven't even played it, like a lot of things on the internet haha. See you on part 6!

Also, for PC version, it was initially released with Games For Windows Live service (I bought the game DVD for it :D) but around around 2014-15, they switched to Steamworks and brought the then console exclusive DLC Lost In Nightmare.
Splitscreen was there in GFWL version, but absent from newer rerelease. However, you can change to old version via Steam properties. But you need a mod for that which is a whole new hassle.

On the game itself, this game was Hella fun.
I wouldn't say this wasn't the worst and it has a special place in my heart as the RE game that I finished with my high school best friend/short-term sweetheart. She was on marksman duty as Sheva and I was the pointman as Chris. It was great. ☺
It's definitely an improvement in terms of gameplay over RE 4. The variety in the Majini was fascinating (the tribal ones were the creepiest to me) and the most fun I had was out of both the vanilla and "Gold" edition of this game was the mercenaries mode.
Overall, my only gripe was what they did to Wesker in the story, they made him into a hammy MCU villain, and that darn inventory system. But at least the story was less cheesy than RE 4's.
Lastly, I didn't really mind the growth in physique with Chris. Coming from a family of Law Enforcers and as a Martial Artist myself, it makes sense to me to have Chris get buffer as a natural effect of staying getting in-shape as a Soldier and to compensate for having to deal with inhuman threats.
(EDIT) And Jill's sacrifice to save Chris in Lost in Nightmares is pretty much like how James at the end of House of the Dead 4 was... pointless. 😂

I agree that It's important to have non-white zombies as funny as that may sound, and ironically Croal agrees with you too. Croal made some pretty valid points that you didn't mention. He said if the setting had been historical Nazi Germany, the game studio would have been very careful to not have the zombies look like they could be interpreted as Holocaust victims and would provide more historical context and acknowledgments accordingly. But it was set in modern day Africa so what's the problem?
Well, Africa and it's residents have been taken advantage of, colonized, brutalized, enslaved, raped, exploited, and maimed for centuries by people who look like Chris Redfield. This has continued into modern-day times, and has been accompanied by rhetoric and ideologies central to Western societies that characterize Africans as less than, dirty, inferior, and disease-ridden (like zombies). Moreover, a lot of contemporary African regimes have been set up by Western governmental and military powers to act in the best interests of people who look like Chris Redfield, and antithetical to the best interests of people who more resemble the zombies in this game. Many of Africa's people are still living the devastatingly negative effects of imperialism and colonism waged by people who look like Chris Redfield. And if that wasn't enough, mainstream politicians who look like Chris Redfield, speak poorly about African citizens and discuss them and their cultures as though they are outright inferior.
All Croal was saying is that, If you're going to have a Chris Redfield killing a bunch of faceless zombies in Africa, It would be nice to establish more context and acknowledge some of the factors at play the way they would if the setting more so resembled the Holocaust. That sounds pretty valid all things considered lol.
The ideologies in cultural artifacts like video games have distinct consequences when consumed by audiences. I had a friend in college who played resident evil 5 and would make a lot more racist jokes after doing so. It was always in him but he would go on distinctly more intense and longer racially charged tirades after playing for a few hours. How we consistently portray people who look like Chris Redfield juxtaposed to how we consistently portray people who look more so like the zombies, ultimately impacts the lives of both. In many cases it's subtle, but when it happens repeatedly and systemically it affects everyone involved pretty profoundly. People like my friend go on to have a lot of power and what they think matters.
Croal also brought up how video game studios whether Japanese or not, tend to hire disproportionately few non-white employees, leading to representations of non-white people that are inaccurate and sometimes harmful. That's a valid criticism. It seems in many situations black skin is a disqualification for working in a video game studio. It shouldn't be that way. If everything were reversed, I'm sure people like yourself would notice some of the subtle nuances that were off and wonder why white people were seemingly prohibited from working at video game studios except under rare circumstances.
The biggest issue here though is your implication that responding to and identifying racism and bigotry is more of an issue than the racism and bigotry itself. I have to say that's a strange viewpoint to take. You get offended by people confronting racism and bigotry, and take issue when people even acknowledge racism might be present, but seem to have very little problem with racism and bigotry itself. You are outspokenly against discussing racism, but have very little to say about actual racism. To you, identifying and confronting racism and bigotry is the problem not the racism and bigotry. That perspective has clearly been molded by your lived experiences in your skin which has formed your strong belief systems on these matters. I get it, you don't have to experience it, so you wonder why other people bother talking about it. But just because you don't experience it firsthand doesn't mean it's non-existent.
Anti-black racism embedded in media consumed by westerners has existed for as long as anti-black racism has existed in said western societies (seemingly since their inception lol), and it's important to confront it whenever and wherever it presents itself. Whether merely discussing it offends people like you or not. It just so happens that in recent times, more mainstream journalists have finally been allowed to talk about it. That shouldn't offend you more than the racism prevalent throughout Western history itself. Racism is cancerous, and like cancer, we can't do anything about it until we acknowledge its presence and face it.
All this being said, I appreciate your content and love of survival horror games and the games that followed. I'm already excited to watch your review of the Silent Hill 2 remake that hopefully comes out in 2023. Also, I'm glad you spoke your piece openly. It's very important to discuss these matters

RE 5 was first RE game that I really, really got into. Now I have played it tens of times with different people on local Coop and always had a blast.

I really appreciate you being honest with the accusations of racism. I remember reading that the company was stunned and people need to realize that in the case of Japanese people I really feel it didn't come from a place of racism whatsoever

Nice to see someone else who views RE5 as the better game of the two.
I think people hate RE5 because it steered away from the japanese randomness and cheesiness of RE4 and added co-op thus 'killing' RE4's supposed horror aspect. If RE4 was supposed to be scary and atmospheric we would have ended up with the hookman version instead of that carnival ride...

Yeah, re4 did way more to kill its horror feel, than 5 ever could. You're absolutely right

No, I hate it because it sucked so bad.
It was just a mess to slog through.

You don't knıw what you are talking. Its not about Japanese bullshit. Game is just bad action game not survival horror.

Dante XE 4 had a short midget zombie as the villain, that game is most definitely not a survival horror

Resident evil 5 was one of the first I played in the series, and I got to play co-op with my older brother, so I have very fond memories of it.

I've always enjoyed this game ever since it came out. My dad and I played the absolute hell out of it through co-op on the PS3. I have alot of fond memories with it. Now my girlfriend and I are playing through it on PS4 and we're both enjoying it. I love this game.

Whether or not it was intended for her to be partnered to Chris from the start, Sheva is a great addition to the gameplay and plot (and is still my favorite RE character). The creepiness in the game is there, albeit minimal, and I think I prefer the look of the previous gen version as the contrast not only invokes Black Hawk Down, but creates an eerier experience. And although it changed absolutely nothing in the long run, I do like that they had Jill be brainwashed and take on an antagonistic role. It would have been nice to see more come of it in the form of some PTSD or lingering issues, but this is Resident Evil, so I guess that is asking a bit much.
I think my main criticism, though, is that Chris can be a bit of a cipher at times. Beyond his facial expressions, his emoting can leave much to be desired, especially when it comes to Jill, and that final boss fight is just ridiculous in a mostly not good way. The boulder punching is a fun kind of campy, but the fight itself just doubles down on the series trope of overblown main antagonist mutations (something that would later ruin the Leon/Helena campaign in 6 for me).

I prefer 4 for its tighter level design and the incredibly unscientific factor of replayability, but I do still like 5 a lot. It strays even further from the classic RE formula in gameplay than 4 did though, so it's not hard to see why somebody who's already put off by 4 could just write it off. My biggest problem with the story I guess are the new characters besides Sheva, they're pretty bland and unmemorable. Say what you want about 4's Saturday morning cartoon villains, but you're not going to forget them any time soon. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on 6.

I think RE4 still had some classic RE elements (some backtracking, exploring, dark and creepy sections) while 5 was just about shooting everything. No backtracking, "puzzles"had the keys just lying nearby. It was waaaay more focused on action than before
