    It's time we finally tackled the worst game in the Resident Evil series, if fan reaction is to be believed. A game that cause Capcom to completely rethink their approach to RE....... again. Will this actually be the worst game I've played so far?

    I actually enjoyed RE6 as well. The only issue I had that annoyed me was how you get knocked down whenever a block of health was emptied, even if the hit that caused it was minor. Besides that I had fun and didn't hate it like the majority did.
    My thoughts on why RE went action with 4-6: if they continue to star the same characters in new games, they can't stay oblivious and NOT armed to the teeth with lots of weapons. It's the logical evolution.. if we want classic survival horror, get a new character like with what RE7 did.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +45

      That's true. Having a new character was the only real way they could have done it. Glad to see there's a lot of people out there who got a kick out of this game too!

    • @chironthecuddley6144
      @chironthecuddley6144 4 года назад +18

      Very true. Otherwise you get an awkward situation like Rebecca going from RE Zero to RE 1. She was armed to the teeth and took down a Tyrant to being unable to walk past a couple of zombies.

    • @willvermillion1025
      @willvermillion1025 3 года назад +7

      And now Ethan has action hero controls too so you were completely right.

    • @Suzakuux
      @Suzakuux 3 года назад +5

      @@willvermillion1025 Yup. Even Dead Space followed the same route, Issac returned for both sequels and each game became more action focused.
      I think a few survival horror franchises that have somewhat avoided being more focused on action were Silent Hill (1-3 at least and I guess 4), and Fatal Frame. They did well by having new protagonists for each game.

    • @Suzakuux
      @Suzakuux 3 года назад +2

      @Shiori Could be part of the reason but not the only one. You can't have reoccurring characters and NOT have them armed to the teeth and trained to take on any threat after what the RE cast has been through. Unless you do the "ah shit! We lost all our weapons/gear/powers" trope lots of video game sequels use to explain why you have to upgrade everything again.

    Jake reminded me of Dante with his one liners, close combat style and him being the one who is in controle all the time and acting like a badass.

  • @wh3nderson95
    @wh3nderson95 6 лет назад +297

    I loved RE6 for the fluid combat system and the overall amount of sheer content that a game had. I even liked the story for the game as well. Jake and Sherry as victims of the "the sins of our father" styled narrative. Daddy Wesker and Birkin were collaborators of purely selfish gains and so their kids decide to move past on their own. Chris Redfield with the weary belief of how much being a soldier wears him down as a character only for an idealistic personification of himself reminds Chris of his former beliefs. I don't expect Leon, Chris, Ada, and Jake to be scared of what dangers that exist in their world. Of course, Chris would bulk up so he can be able to stand a chance against the bigger BOWs. Leon would be a loner because his work would sooner get friends killed than saved. Ada's never-ending cat and mouse with the world governments. Jake's selfish nature in being a mercenary.
    I play RE6 with an aggressive playstyle with constantly mixing up some stun shots with the melee attacks. Or how the quick shot mechanic is done to do some fun sets for headshots or for crowd control. I loved it when I have the stamina meter be buffed so if Leon has both of his Wingshooters out at the same time. He will snap his arms around like he was some cowboy going trigger happy with his revolvers. Helena Harper with her quick shots with the Hydra shotgun, Helena will whip around stylishly to blast enemies at their shins and if you do it on the last barrel of the weapon, she has a special quick reload animation. The same goes for the fluid animations and camera angles to make sure that whatever you're doing look like something out of a creatively done film sequence. Stun an enemy near a car, you can smash his head against it. The enemies that swing weapons at you, get the time it right and have a free counter-attack. Sherry's baton does some special damage on certain targets and if you quick shot with it, leads to her being able to sweep a crowd of enemies. It's an awesome game that makes it work while making each character from the series be badass in their own way. Just shooting the enemies is boring, the proper way to play RE6 is to go John Wick on their asses.
    The game is far from being so far gone by the identity is not one that I think is a problem of the series. Of each of the campaigns, they are meant to explore some new and old dynamics of the series. Leon's campaign has the zombie enemies to work with as each stage is supposed to reference different points of Leon's life. Tall Oaks, it's to be for Leon's time in Raccoon City, he even references it while the developers smack us over the head with it how there is a rookie cop that Leon saves. In the later stages of the Cathedral/underground network is for Village/Castle moments from RE4. Chris' campaign makes sense diegetically because he is part of the military and the BSAA isn't a consulting firm but a UN-backed military response force for a feasible threat that constantly occurs in their universe. It makes sense there would be specialized divisions that are meant to take on BOWs. This game mode is supposed to get the blood pumping as RE5 had the melee system be a viable tactic. As well as the co-op ways to further the relationship that Piers and Chris have a team than the RE5 clunky attempt of which Sheva was a boring character.
    The one that actively goes against the for philosophies of the RE franchise was Jake and Sherry's campaign. As it involves a constant amount of movement with arenas to take out a group of enemies. While that Helena and Leon have unique guns/quick shots, Jake and Sherry however, will make the enemies regret getting close enough to breathe on. The stun baton and Jake's palms would make an unarmed Frank West from Dead Rising a proud. What set this campaign apart from the others is that Tyrant boss type enemy that harasses Jake and Sherry. Similar to being hunted by the Nemesis and Mr. X but in this case, we get to kick this guy's ass at the end of the campaign.
    There is more to say, but I will leave it at: I love RE6.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +36

      Wow, you have put more thought into this than I did. Haaaa. I didn't notice it before, but Leon's campaign does mirror part 4, once you hit the church. You have a good eye for design. I would argue that Jake's campaign is a perfect example of what the series had been learning towards, since 4.

      I know this game is considered Capcom's secret shame, but I loved Leon's character model. Even though it's a stain in the series, it's not even 1/2 bad as RE Gun survivor or Gaiden. "Dead Aim" was meh...

      Not easy to find a guy who think the same way. I love that game too, I have a lot of fun with it. For me, the most important thing about game, is not how well it's made or the perfection, but the fun it gives you. RE6 might not be the perfect or "good" game in many people eyes, but the content, a lot of them. Plus the more polished action gameplay of the 3rd person style is very fun to mess around with. Mercenary is probably one of the best thing and most fun in this game.
      "Just shooting the enemies is boring" That for me has to be the Revelation series, those 2 are way more boring to play than RE6 imo. I don't really like those 2 in both gameplay and story.
      Gotta say people overlook a lot when it comes to the story, like situation of the BSAA. The older cast are now veteran, experienced, season soldier/agent. It's not gonna be "survival horror" for them anymore if CAPCOM make games starring them as main characters.

  • @DecoyOctorok
    @DecoyOctorok 6 лет назад +247

    RE6 should've been one of Capcom's CGI movies, not a game. My main complaint will always be the lack of impact that the weapons have in this game. RE4 and RE5 both felt more polished and fun to play. A powered up shotgun in those games sent whole packs of enemies flying back. The enemies in RE6 are generic bullet sponges.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +38

      Maybe so but the melee options in this game are so much more open and enjoyable than in previous games. Guns are pretty much optional in some areas when you can just dropkick a zombie and take him to suplex city.

      my biggest complaint is the stupid enemy designs. it's like if i came up with a list of the stupidest things to combine with a zombie. grasshopper zombies, butterfly zombies, spider zombies, bee zombies. a boss that's like a t-1000 zombie that turns into a centaur zombie with a machine gun, a giant fly zombie, and the stupidest of all, a t-rex zombie, lol. it's just so beyond silly it's impossible to get immersed into this game.

    Your conclusion about the logical conclusion of ridiculousness was spot on. I decided to pick up RE6 on the cheap side and had an absolute blast. It's a 90s action movie taken to the extreme.
    When you praise a game's style change [RE4] to absurd levels, why wouldn't they keep giving the audience more and more of that? I love RE7 but damn, if they made another over the top RE game, I wouldn't mind.

      ok I am replaying really late, but I agree if you can get over the fact that this is not a traditional RE game, the over the top action etc is really fun, my only major gripe of RE6 was the huge amount of boss battles and while that is fine and all if you compare to say 5(which is in my opinion by far the most superior of the action oriented games) 99% of the time in 5 your fighting generic enemies in 6 it feels like boss battle after boss battle

    I never finished this game. Ironically the heavy emphasis on action bored me to tears, I just couldn't get invested in it and the ridiculous cutscenes were just cringy and irritating. Saying it's not a Resident Evil game when it's called Resident Evil 6 just doesn't work for me. If it wasn't called Resident Evil I doubt I ever even would've played it. I had a better time with Revelations.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +12

      I loved Revelations, but that's because it was an actual survival horror game. My point in this video is that 6 is so far from what the original games were, that it's just not RE. As for you not liking the action, that makes sense. If anything, that kind of proves my point. RE is not about big flashy action scenes.

      RE7 isn't good, other than the survival horror aspect. RE7's overall plot isn't connected to the RE storyline narrative like what RE6 was, and it plays like a RE reboot than a canological sequel it falsely guised as to be. I haven't played it, but have watched it all the way, and from what I've seen and heard from the RE fans that played it, RE7 is trash. RE7 lacks story consistency, lack of character development, nonsensical fanservice such as Blue Umbrella and Chris Redfield, which looks completely gay works for this Blue Umbrella apparently.
      Unless you're into a different inconsistent storyline totally unrelated to the RE lore involving infected hillbillies with molded poop monsters, there's no real reason to get into RE7.
      As a RE fan myself, having played RE1-RE6, including RECVX, Rev1, and Rev2. I don't plan on ever playing RE7. In fact from the way I see it, RE7 is garbage and I'm so appalled and disgusted as a RE fan that a dumb down generic FPS horror game that copies Outlast(mainly Outlast 2, funny since RE7 came out 3-4 before Outlast 2's release)with NO consistency to the RE storyline even got considered as a RE game or true return to RE roots.
      Hate me if you will, but I'd rather play RE6 over and over than give RE7 a chance. RE6 may have been a fun action game, but at least it was consistent and connected to the RE storyline narrative and character development than RE7 aka Texas Hillbilly Outlast 7 was.

    Pretty ridiculous to state that 4 is objectively worse than 6. Level design alone puts 4 leagues ahead of 6. The only argument for 6 could be the combat improvements. It’s a bloated mess of an experience.

      Yeah why should we allow this person to speak their mind and opinions about a video game I don’t even like! The only time you can speak on the internet is if you join the hive mind and agree with everyone else! We don’t like originality on the internet. We just want a sea of robotic spamming of meme back to back, the pinnacle of human interaction to really take advantage of wireless communication.

      mjskillz23 What credibility man this is just RUclips, and a retrospective, relax. It’s not gonna decrease his epic gamer score. I didn’t say RE6 was better, but really who gives a hoot if he enjoyed it more? I appreciate that he gave his real impressions, played through it with an open mind, and at least tried to make sense of what the devs were shooting for. He could have just made the easy video which most other YTers would where he makes all the same complaints we’ve heard before and calls it a day, easy money and people wouldn’t be upset. All I’m saying is I’m glad he didn’t. If anything I’d say it adds to his credibility, he’s going to tell you how he honestly felt and it’s up to you to decide where your opinions differ.
      Godfather is good but it’s just too much of a slow burn for me, Goodfellas would be my classic mob movie, but I can still appreciate what Godfather did. That’s why we can be thankful both exist so both types of people get the movie they want. Like RE. But not like the RE movies. No one wants those.

I do agree on the point though that this took the action gameplay Waaaaay too far. The inventory was a cluster ack and I will never get over Leon's boss gauntlet to a giant fly. That being said the game was still solid with it's story and scope only really lacking with villains. The production is up there and there are flaws like the vehicle section controls. Look I'm not saying it's an awesome game or even a good "resident evil game" just that it can be enjoyable and there are many other titles that deserve to be refered to as a shitty game.

    I played Leon's campaign split screen with my brother, and during it we realized that the item drops had to be shared between us. I don't remember this being the case in RE5 but it caused us to always be out of ammo and health items, having to use the lame melee attacks in desperation and constant deaths. It didn't help that this was the start of the game so characters didn't have any skills yet. The final boss in Leon's part was torture. After every form we kept saying "So thats it right?" I think it wanted to be epic, but it made us both sick. Like when you get food poisoning from a food and you never want to eat that food again because that one bad time ruined it, this caused my brother to rage quit the game. I played online and realized how much easier it was when the two players are not sharing a console. But I never want to play this game again because of how my first experience tormented me.

    The enemy variety in RE6 is insane! It definitely has some of the coolest monsters, as well as the best RE duo: Jake and Sherry. The game mechanics themselves are excellent, but the level design doesn't really allow it to shine. I respect RE6 a lot for how ambitious it is-- going full ham on the action rather than taking the middle ground, but it definitely isn't one of my favorites. It's a game I respect more than I personally enjoy.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      To be fair, I actually really like 4, I just harp on about how it was the reason RE no longer makes survival horror games. I agree though about the level design. I never really thought about it, but yeah, it did kind of keep me from playing the way I wanted to.

      personally I like RE6 over 4. Wasn't a big fan of RE4 on the GC and even today its alright but not great. I can never get over the "what if" seeing some of the early RE4 builds and I find that RE4s environments are missing the character and charm of the early games.
      Meanwhile RE6 was fun, not really a RE game but fun none the less. Although the over lapping boss fights and QTE really kill replaying the game for me.

    • @yougotkained
      @yougotkained 5 лет назад

      I played all the RE games recently for the first time and I had that very opinion. Everyone LOVED RE4 but to me, the scariest part of the game was just clunky controls, that's it. If you were able to move better, the horror is gone. RE6 EVERYONE HATED and it has its annoying moments like Jake's ENTIRE EXISTENCE - but the game is pretty fun and after the initial over the top action, it settles in with some 'normality' (in a RE game anyway).

  • @AntonioRodriguezSilver
    @AntonioRodriguezSilver 6 лет назад +17

    I almost agree. However, 6 has some very nasty flaws that really irked me.
    First of all, the amount of damage suffered from enemies seems very uneven and quite unfair at times. There are some instances in which I entered a cutscene all of a sudden but kept receiving damage from enemies even though I couldn't do anything to avoid it. It's also very easy to receive perpetual damage.
    Another issue is with the controls. There is much more mobility than in other RE games, which is great, but it's quite easy to feel overwhelmed with all of those options. I guess that's just a feature I never got used to.
    Finally, there is the issue with the lack of feedback when attacking certain enemies. I wasted a lot of bullets against certain bosses while having no idea if anything was going on. This was a big problem with the final boss of the Chris campaign and a few of the forms of Leon's final boss.
    Funnily, I really enjoyed using melee attacks with Jake, so that was my favorite campaign. I haven't finished Ada's. Saw she has to go against a kind of enemy that I really despised so I stopped playing her campaign at that point.
    Anyway, I can't say I hated 6. In fact, it was fun, but it has those problems that keep me away from it.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +5

      didn't run into that issue of receiving damage while in cutscenes, but I can understand being overwhelmed with the large amount of movement options. That makes sense to me. I'll take an almost agree, over a definite disagree, any day of the week.

      Resident Evil 4 is not a Resident Evil game.
      It may be labeled "Resident Evil," but it doesn't feel real.
      When Shinji Mikami developed this game for the gamecube, he wasn't happy with what he and his team had developed, and he wasn't even happy with the game being ported to other platforms. Shinji Mikami did an interview with one of the creators of Silent Hill where he said. "The game in which I feel that I have the least myself in it" that is, not his real vision for the world to realize (True vision was Resident Evil 3.5), they completely took control of his work, he could not stay any longer, so he left and found another one company - Not that I say Capcom was absolutely perfect at the time because they were already making mistakes before and after when Resident Evil 4 came out.
      Reading your comment, you have no idea what you left out of these posts, but a few people have already pointed out what was missing from the 4th part.
      1. Some Survival-horror elements disappeared and were downgraded just to focus on standalone entertainment and action.
      2. The puzzle solving materials have become easier, the only thing that remains (perhaps) difficult is in the place where we take control of Ashley's character, but when the puzzle is solved, a door opens after it, which is a whole priority for the game, in summary, not a big place where it could take us somewhere.
      There is also a delay as it appears later until we reach the middle level when we get to the Regenerators, especially with the enemy I mentioned, it's not even scary, it could have been a danger for the first player, but it does not mean that you will be afraid of them later, because everyone who continues the game further, will be aware that such enemies are easy to deal with, if something is easy to kill, it will not be scary at all later on, same can be applied for zombies but...
      3. Zombies are a good fact why they should have a place in the Resident Evil series, not only that sometimes it is easy to defeat any enemy but you are still afraid of them, it is simply difficult to measure their attacks and you do not know where they are coming from...It's a lot better than thousands of RPG shooter enemies.
      I don't know why you don't notice these? Zombies missing out in any Resident Evil game, considered a false lead to the true aspect of refreshion feel.
      4. Top priority and the important story element is killed off-screen. Talking about Umbrella.
      Ever since the Code Veronica event happened and the real story ended when Umbrella was still in effect and part of the series just to end with a main character would tell us what happened to the events instead of us knowing more secrets and mysteries so that we could see the end a few episodes later.
      I feel sorry for the fans who really wanted to see how the real nightmare ends, Resident Evil 4 just proves that the company is no longer relevant and there are no unquestionable plots unfolding.
      When the game first came out, even the living God didn't know how Ada survived that terrible tragedy in the previous installments and who Krauser (who was supposed to be Leon's companion) was, all this was later thankfully proven in the Chronicle series, but it was still better than the nonsensical story of 4.

      How do you like this Resident Evil game? How can you call this a Resident Evil game? It's impossible for you to prove anything after all since It's the only truth way available.
      Wait, that's not all! We ended up in a room in a castle with lava and how long does this place need this ugly mountain formation where we meet U-3, since when does this a thing and a "good" variation of 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻? Not to mention the Island part, which was the least liked and poorly rated by fans of these segments, and this game is still the best Resident Evil game?
      The best over-the-shoulder camera game and the first TPS game ever is a lie.
      Look at the video game Legend Of Zelda (1986) or even Grand Theft Auto III (2001), which came out before Resident Evil 4.
      The criticisms of this game is also bad but not the game itself.
      As you read the whole comment bag, under one Resident Evil 4 content, it's just maddening, pointless and tiring, almost always the same and unstoppable, which proves that this game has been overreacted.

I mean, it seems to be a mix of the classic style of RE games that I prefer, mixed with the newer action style (though it's clear it leans more towards the action stuff.) I also like how over the top it is, and that they returned to including zombies. Really brings everything together quite well. You've changed my mind about this one. I mean, I understand why the fan base became concerned (and rightly so) when they saw the series pivot almost entirely into an action game. While I do think RE is at its best when doing the survival horror thing, this game is still very fun! Love seeing so many RE characters come into contact with each other as their individual campaigns intertwine. It's RE's version of Sonic Adventure! So of course I'm gonna like it! I hope one day Capcom attempts this level ambition again. I'm thinking multiple characters (preferably series vets) with interweaving campaigns, only this time toned down. Less action and more isolated environments with classic survival horror gameplay!

    I really don´t think people like 4 better than 5 and 6 for nostalgia reasons, 4 had better ambience, still not close to 1 or 2 of course but the game built tension in a pretty good way thats was helped by my point No 2 better monster design for example Dr. Salvador, Garradors, Regenerators, Salazar´s right hand to name a few, those are all iconic enemies that stuck in the mind of a LOT of players, gameplay was amazing for its time and it aged decently well, i beated the game a few days ago and still found it fun to play of course 5 and 6 are better gameplay wise but take in account that 5 and 6 were out 4 and 7 years later and even then it is still not THAT different to justify saying that 6 is everything 4 wanted to be but better, i don´t think 6 is not and objectively better experience than 4 as you say.
    Also it is pretty amazing to me how i have the same opinions as you when talking about 0 to CV but when talking about 4,5 and 6 i couldn´t disagree more, im seriously enjoying this series man, beautiful work.

    There's actually two skills that are insanely useful. Breakout is the 2nd and it says it makes escaping from enemies easier. It does this by making literally every single QTE in the game so easy that it's actually harder to fail them then succeed. So if the QTEs annoy you, turn it on.
    Oh and it's cheap and available from the start so you can have it for the whole game.

    I think I had the same thougts about it as you. I spat in this game's direction, as it was just too over the top and "not the RE I grew up with", but then one day I was at my friend's place and he turned it on.... and we had a blast. Honestly I don't remember the last time I had so much fun playing a two-player (shooter) game. We played it for hours until we just felt exchausted from so much time spent in front of the TV and when I left I felt conflicted. Because I really enjoyed the gameplay and its ridiculous fun factor when I spent so much time bashing this game for the story and piñata-enemies. It's sort of amazing how this game can swing to both spectrums. Can't say I love this game, but I really, REALLY liked it. It's actually insanely fun to play with a friend. And ! Thank you for all your REtrospects, Jared! :)

    Kudos to another great video, however; I must point out a repeated statement you made in the last three retrospectives, including this one "this is not a Resident Evil game". The RE series has always been about breaking new ground and can't be catogorized so simplistically. The "Classic RE style" was a product of console limitation. RE2 is the only title that truly stuck to the first game's formula. If technology had it's way, 3 probably would've adapted the over the shoulder perspective. Which was impossible at the time, but theoretically could've been considered since 4 was in development since 1999, and the more action oriented nature of Nemesis would suggest this, had there not been technical limitations of course.
    Games like Survivor, Dead Aim, Umbrella Chronicles, etc, shows that the RE series has been evolving over a long period of time, not just with RE4. Purist always point the finger at RE4 for ruining the classics, but instead, it was an evolution of the core gameplay. The controls didn't change, the camera shifted. The horror wasn't axed, it was elevated. The first time Leon got his head chopped off with a chainsaw was just as pivotal as the dog jumping through the window. RE4 managed to make horror exhilarating, while influencing a generation of games that aren't even in the same genre. That is an incredible feat, not only for the RE series, but games as a medium.
    I found it silly when you said RE6 is everything RE4 wanted to be. The truth is, RE4 is the standard that 6 and 5 tried to live up to and could never get right. While 5 and 6 are great games, no amount of refinements could make them better than the game that influenced them.
    In any case, Resi 4, 5, and 6 are Resident Evil games no matter how you slice it. They carried the franchise forward, refined the core mechanics, and evolved the series.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 лет назад +8

      Thanks man!! I think you're giving 4 a lot of credit. It definitely set a standard, but it's unrealistic to say that 5 and 6 did not improve on that standard. In that same sense, I can say that RE set the standard, and the later titles in the series, failed to meet it. See what I mean? When I say they're not RE games, I'm saying they are RE games in name only. At this point, there are still more 2d, static camera, survival horror games than 3d 3rd person shooters. So if we're going by precedence, they still don't stack up. I'm all for evolution, but there is no part of RE present in part 4. The things the series was based on (item conservation, ambient horror, exploration, pre rendered backgrounds, puzzle solving) are either not present in the new games, or are there in a very limited fashion. That's why i say that. Trust me, I would be saying the same thing, if the series started out as big action titles, and then suddenly switched to slow paced survival horror.

      I've always argued that the series went in a more action-oriented direction as early as the second game. Yes it still had a decent amount of scares but RE2 was very much in the mold of a big American summer blockbuster.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      @@AvalancheReviews Saying that the new games aren't games in the same series is like saying D&D fifth edition is D&D because its mechanics have changed since Advanced D&D. That statement makes no sense whatsoever. Its fine to prefer a style of older games but to say that newer games aren't a true scottsman like the older games because they don't do X and therefore don't have the "essence of RE" is simply a bad argument to stand on.

I guess I'm one of the few who liked then game and didn't see it as a let down. I liked how Chris and Leon saw each other and knew each other. Two characters we never see together in any previous RE game and know Clair. I was a bit bothered by who Jake was but I'm ok with it and I'm glad to see Sherry again all grown up and not helpless. So like most every RE game, I do like RE6, but I disagree with your point of it basically being RE4 but better. There's some key things missing. Namely, one of my favorite things about RE4, and that's the sense of progression and the way you handle items and the general economy of the game. In RE4 every single resource has a value, down to each bullet. They can be sold, health can be purchased, every action is weighed by its value for your playthrough. RE6 gets rid of this. The inventory system is massively simplified, the weapon upgrades are gone, the economy of getting and spending money is gone (replaced by the upgrades with points system, which I find massively less satisfying, and also terrible for replayability as progress carries over between campaigns), and instead we get an overabundance of resources that you can't carry. I went back to replay RE6 recently, and found myself leaving mass amounts of items and ammo behind because they didn't fit in my limited inventory. I just don't get a sense of character progression in RE6, and it often makes me feel like my performance in each section doesn't really matter. I'm just beating stages to get to the next one, not having to optimize my run.
    Beyond that, things are a lot more subjective. I enjoy the more classic RE controls in RE4 more, but that's just me. While every game evolves the series in some way, RE4 felt a lot more natural to me, mostly because the controls stayed relatively the same, even with the change in camera perspective. There's just something about RE6's controls that are off putting to me, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the dedicated melee attacks, the sprinting, or something else. I do really like the rolling and crawling though. If you ever get to Revelations 2 in your series, and I imagine you will, I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on the controls in that game, as I find they are a more satisfying version of the RE6 controls, with having things slowed down.
    That all being said, I find the main theme in the soundtrack of RE6 to be pretty great.

      RE4 does mouse and keyboard controls way better than RE6 too. Playing through RE4 and 5 on PC with my preferred peripherals is great, everything works fine, I can customise the controls to my liking and everything is easy to use and intuitive. In RE6, I'm stuck with forced on mouse acceleration that makes aiming and menuing way more difficult than they need to be and lots of combined inputs like sprint, cover and interact being on the same button. It's the sort of game you can tell was designed with a gamepad first, M/KB never mindset.

    When I saw and heard of RE 6, I was in more or less the same position. Though I didn’t play the demo, what I saw of it didn’t look RE ish to me and ended up waiting for a while to play. I got the game on PC to give it a fair shake and honestly had a really fun time with it.
    I would say I liked jake’s campaign, but chris and leon’s were fun too. I didn’t really like ada’s campaign, as the stealth felt very wonky in comparison to the other games. I will say chris’s campaign had the most amazing climax out of the bunch, because of how insane it is, so I give capcom props for that.
    One thing that really made it all worth it for me was the mercenaries mode, which is hands down the best rendition of it in the series so far.
    I still retain that 4 is the best out of the action driven games in the series, but I will give you that 6’s movement system is better than 4 and is honestly really fuckin cool to do in the game. I also like the way 6 looks more than 4, in terms of color direction and Monster designs too.

    I found this game fine, it's my least favourite of all the main entries, but it was pretty fun and the story was dumb in a good way.
    My main issue is that both Leon and Jakes campaign were unbelievably dull, Leons level designs, gameplay and story is so boring and unforgettable (despite me being a classic RE style fan) it was probably the worst campaign. Chris's was super fun, and a very good action game, and the story was the most interesting of the 4 imo.
    Also the fucking inventory system is honestly the worst thing I've ever experienced in a video game. What a horrific design.

      I can agree about the inventory. Having to manually place herbs in your active item slots was so dumb. Other than that, I never had to mess with it, so I sort of forgave it. I don't know, Leon's campain was super fun for me. The sequence underground was really poorly paced, but all the big city scenes were super fun. I love zombie movies, so being in the middle of an outbreak was a dream come true for me.

    I played a lot of 6. Even though it didn't feel like Resident Evil anymore, I still enjoyed playing through it at the time. If there's one thing I can praise about the game, it's those story intersections - where four players can be in one instance of the game at once. One intersection between Leon's and Chris' campaign had the two teams (Leon and Helena versus Chris and Piers) racing to hack their way out of a room filled with moving mines. One person from each team hacks, while the other covers the one who is hacking. I liked the snippets of competition and cooperation between four people in Resident Evil 6. It wasn't something I expected at the time from a Resident Evil game.

    RE6 is great, so many people complain about it's bombastic presentation. But if you're going to have a game with all the mainline characters that have survived dozens of monster adventures, they're undoubtably going to be seasoned fighting vets. The game raps up the careers of all the characters and now we have RE7 giving the series a fresh start.

    RE6 will probably always be my number 1 for almost all the reasons everyone hates it. It was the first RE I felt I could actually play. I'd never even played a shooter until RE6. I only played it because my brother asked me if I wanted to play it, mainly as a joke, but I just pulled up a chair beside him, picked up my controller and asked him how to shoot.
    There aren't many games me and my brother not only both like but less that we can play together 'OFFLINE'. I also found out I'm a pretty good shoot when I'm not panicking over weird anxiety I feel in certain games. Any game can be survival horror to me not because of how it plays but how I play them and because I have a habit of placing myself in the shoes of the character with out the mental fortitude the have.

    “6 is everything 4 tried to be, but better” It must have took balls to say that. I don’t agree with it, but I do think it done a number of things better, regarding being an outright action game. A TPS where you can’t move and shoot, certainly isn’t something that should be lauded so heavily. But I took a lot of issues with things about 6’s combat too, and found that’s only in the mercenaries mode, did it allow me to fully ustilise the skill set the game gives you. That mode is fantastic, though.
    I’m also glad you liked Ada’s campaign. I thought it was the best too. The stealth was okay for a game that isn’t fully based around stealth.

      I honestly think 6 is what 4 was trying to be. IF you listen to interviews from Mikami, he sounds like he's describing 6. I think he wanted a big budget Hollywood movie, in game form, but the GC couldn't do all the things he wanted. As I was playing through 6, I kept getting the feeling that I was playing the upgrades to all of 4's systems, mechanics, sequences, etc.

    • @gilgamesh310
      @gilgamesh310 6 лет назад +3

      I must watch the interview then so. I will say when I recently replayed RE4,I enjoyed it a lot less than when I first played it. RE6 definitely advances a lot of what it does, and I think a lot of people’s ignore just how dynamic the moves you can perform are. The problem I have, was that the campaigns didn’t provide many opportunities to properly utilize the melee attacks and combos you have. The mercenaries in the otherhand, provided a load of opportunities, and is great fun. I also found the bosses and vehicle sections in RE6 to be really poor. But I can appreciate what they were going for with the game. It doesn’t deserve a lot of the hate it gets.

    so here is my view on it, RE6 was a tribute to the previous titles while being its own thing, there were a lot of homages to the first 5 games of the series, which playing those 5 plus a few spinoffs I noticed them, now as for the lack of traditional survival horror elements, you just have to look at who is starring in this game, all of them with the exception of Jake, already went through the most horrific stuff that anyone could go through, so at this point, its just another Tuesday for them, as a matter of fact, its so common for Leon, the poor guy was reduced to a complete drunk and gave up entirely about saving people in one of the CGI films, because no matter what he does, or what Chris or anyone does, Umbrellas viruses and monsters always comes out and always is global problem that kills thousands of people, thanks to former scientists selling those viruses to greedy warlords, or another company trying to follow Umbrellas footsteps, the result is always the same, only complaint I have about this game, is what they did to Chris, attitude wise, I get what they were going for, the man is tired of losing men and friends to monsters Umbrella makes, but he should know by now this is par for the course, the Chris we know from the 1st game and Revelations would never have been as hotheaded as the Chris we saw in 6. oh and 5.. almost forgot about 5, lol

    I think the issues with this game are very rooted in its core. The HUD was very poor in this game and made inventory management and pausing in general a nightmare all its own. Like a lot of people said the environments just weren't memorable, especially in Chris' campaign. I think a big part of Resident Evil's appeal has been in the back tracking through constantly changing areas and 6 just doesn't do that at all. It makes each area feel a lot more memorable and meaningful once you move past it. I like 5 but it was a problem there too, leaving a lot of areas feeling bland with swarms of enemies placed about randomly with no thought put in to how their placement causes the player to interact with them. That aspect is a fault of having two players, due to tight corners and surprise enemies can be dispatched by your partner who is hanging back. Another thing that bothered me was the enemies. They had some neat designs I guess but they were bullet sponges ultimately that felt unsatisfying to fight. Another big thing that really kills the experience is the lack of grandiose-ness I suppose you could say. I don't mean grandiose as in driving a motorcycle off a ramp over a helicopter, but building importance through your game. Think of the licker; the first time you see it is through a cutscene after coming around a corner and hearing/seeing dripping blood. It is frightening and sets up the creature as a danger that you are going to want to avoid during your playthrough. Just as well getting the masks in RE1 is a dramatic experience, as they are spooky in their own right and placing them in the tomb causes bloody chains to explode off of a hanging coffin. It's this kind of showmanship that gives these games personality and 6 just didn't have that. Say what you will of 5 (I think it's great and playing it through with my Dad is one of my favorite memories together), but even it understood this kind of presentation with enemies like the axe wielder.

    The thing about re5 and 6 is people always say they are just action games now... but the thing is... they are really GOOD action games.

      lol saints 3 and resi 6 is my favs but i've always watched and admired resi my whole life from my older brother playing them, so i get the argument people make about 5 and 6, it's like the Micheal bay versions of the series lol

      Yeah, that sounds about right. The story was more entertaining than 4's if you ask me though.

      true, 4 honestly got dry at alot of points that's why i've never beat it, and on top of that 4 kick-started the stuff that's going on in 5 and 6

      another reason it felt so connected to add to your point is that it was a resi 2 reunion lol outside of claire and in addition to helena, and piers name is on one of the jail cells in resi 1.5

    The gameplay was pretty fun but the story was AWFUL and there were many incredibly frustrating areas of this game

      the story wasn't nearly as bad as the ridiculous enemy variety, especially the t-1000 zombie, simmons, t-rex form. it's impossible for me to take this game seriously with the terminator zombie bs they started in this game. i actually think the story wouldn't be that bad if it had less silly enemies and bosses. the nemesis like boss in jake's campaign is the only one i liked in the entire game.

    I never played RE6 but from what I've seen...no thanks. I play Resident Evil to be scared and stranded, trying to find a way out. I don't play to "have fun". Yes, I play to enjoy myself. But if it's a RE game, it's gotta torture me, not pamper me. Horror and fear are the 2 main ingredients to a RE game. RE6 is the Metal Gear Survive of the RE series.

      Musou Tensei So did I, in fact I thought RE5 was by far the worst of the series. I didn't enjoy Chris's campaign much at all, but the rest were good.

    I still don't like RE6 and it is only main series RE game that did not like. Maybe it is sillyness up to 11, or lack of atmosphere. Or like 10 other things. It is what it is, at least someone liked it.

      Thanks for the love!!! I do plan on doing more full series retrospectives when this is done. I was thinking Max Payne, Silent Hill or Dino Crisis. Maybe I might throw in a few JRPGs in there too.

    I think RE6 is pretty slept on honestly. Yes, it is very blockbuster, like Fast and Furious, Uncharted levels, but it is also really fun and there are tangible stakes here. It doesn't fully stick the landing in terms of meshing the campaigns, but it is mostly successful in telling a full, layered story with intrigue and interesting dialogue about the gradual mental deterioration of a soldier, justice vs revenge, what it means to be a hero in the face of terrorism, whether a person can be defined by his/her lineage, etc. The new characters are also rather likable and distinctive, with clear motivations and complete arcs by the game's end. Also, the enemies designs are among the best in the series and Mercenaries mode is fire, though I can't decide between 5 and 6 in terms of which is the best.

    The first RE title I didn't complete. I played most of the way through Leon's Campaign, but dropped it pretty quick. I believe (after watching your review) that a part of it may have been the fact that I was playing on the original 360 port. One of my biggest criticisms of the game was that it didn't really look as amazing as it was being touted as looking.
    I recall the demo, and later the campaign. I loved the direction, although I didn't care for the action, but like you I had already known it was going to be an action title based on the success of 5. I, personally, was never on board with the action focus and was one of the seemingly few who thought RE4 was a bastardization of a series beloved to me. That being said, I knew what it was going in, and Leon's Campaign began with a great atmosphere. Also, unlike my dislike for Sheva, Helena was great. She never stood in my way when I pulled my gun out and she actually helped more than needed my assistance. And may I just say... Dat ass... But I digress.
    I think I really started to lose interest when the game transitioned into an arcade game, which was very soon after the beginning. I also didn't care for the fact that the backgrounds occasionally had corpses, but they looked like they'd jump at you (and the didn't) AND you could walk through them like they were an afterthought. This was acceptable in RE2, but in a game this modern it just felt cheap and unfinished. Unlike RE5 which felt completed and less like an arcade game.
    I really wanted to love this one. The returning characters, the larger story... I mean, it was primed and ready to be my favorite RE title. What I loved about RE1 and RE2 was that they felt PLAUSIBLE. Like, you could imagine that somewhere there's a vicious organization that's toying with chemical weapons. And then RE5, where you could imagine that these weapons would get into the hands of terrorists and wreak havoc on unsuspecting populations left in the dark via Government Cover-up. RE6 showed what would happen when the cat was finally let out of the bag and there was no hiding it anymore. However, that's when it began to share the problem of the Star Wars Prequels and we learned that sometimes it's what you don't show that has the best effect. Suddenly the world seemed less plausible and more like it was time to phone in The Avengers.
    However... Perhaps you're right... Perhaps it was my love of the series, my disappointments with RE4 and RE5 (despite the fun I had with them), and my high expectations that made me really not get into RE6. Lately I've been learning to enjoy games for what they are and not what I hoped they would be and I think if I walk into RE6 knowing I'm going to be playing a balls-to-the-wall arcade game, I may actually enjoy it. Especially if it's got a good story. That was the saving grace of both RE4 and RE5 for me. Also, this time, I'll be able to play the remastered version on my PS4, and that may make a lot of difference.
    Thanks again for these great retrospectives!

      Glad you're liking it man!! Hey, you might be just like me. I absolutely hated the game because of how far it strayed from traditional RE, but once I learned to stop seeing it as an Re game, I ended up having a really good time with it. As for the corpses lying around, some in Leon's campaign actually did end up getting up. I also liked how you could trip over dead bodies. I don't think I've seen that in a game before.

    Fun fact about Leon's VP70, it's a place holder for a custom Sig Sauer P226 that was supposed to be his handgun in the game...yet it was cut for some reason. There was an airfsoft model made and he got it in the animated movies vendetta.

    I wasn’t sure what to expect from RE 6 given what I’d heard but I couldn’t stop from saying to myself “I actually like this” at numerous times. I just got into the RE games a couple months ago. 7 was on sale and I remembered the good stuff said about it so I picked it up. I really only had a casual idea of RE from the movies but thanks to a timely sale I was able to get most of the games and I’ve been playing all the way through. Tonight I finished Jakes story for RE 6 and I started Ada’s. It’s been a really good time. If I had to rank them so far I’d go Leon, Jake, Chris
