  • While its combat system is excellent, Resident Evil 6 works against it instead of with it, and gets about as far away from its series roots.
Few games have given me more mixed feelings than Resident Evil 6. It's a game that took the action-focus approach of RE4 and 5 and pushed it as far as it could go.

On one hand, Resident Evil 6 has one of the best combat systems for a third-person shooter outside of Vanquish. However, for a good portion of the campaigns, the level design doesn't work with this system, it likes to work against it. As well, Resident Evil 6 does a terrible job of explaining how this combat system works.
Save for a few short instances, the horror is all but nonexistent. Resident Evil 6 has major pacing issues, something the series has excelled at. Cutting anywhere from 25-30% of the game's ~20hrs to beat the four campaigns would've done wonders for RE6.
Resident Evil 6 is a game that has some of the worst excesses of the 7th generation, the WII, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 generation.
A time when Japanese devs were trying to implement more western design trends. There's something really fun and great buried in Resident Evil 6 - it's just filled with excess. It's a combat system I'm surprised Capcom hasn't really taken into a spinoff title, or a different IP, because there's something here that even all these years later, makes Resident Evil 6 worth digging through.
This Resident Evil 6 review/analysis/retrospective/critique looks at how RE6 came to be, the combat system, level design, the campaigns, the mercenaries' mode, and the future of the series.

Something about piers that I concluded that made me like him more, is that notice how he resembles Chris in RE1. And how he’s super honorable and has that Boy Scout kind of out look. I always thought that piers was supposed to be a reflection of Chris, showing chris what he used to be. Because chris in re6 is pretty troubled and angry. Blinded by a lot of baggage. And piers shows up to snap him out of it. It’s like a younger more hopeful version of chris trying to rekindle that hope and drive in chris.

Maybe it's like AC origins and odyssey, just don't consider those game as an AC franchise, you'll get a nice open world game about egypt and greek mythology.
Same with RE6, don't compare it too much with the predecessor (even though it's a mainline series), and you'll get a decent action game with some horror elements :D

People honestly were too hard on RE6 and for their own fault. R4 was great, vut it was clearly something else than 1 to 3, far more action. Then 5 comes, even more action driven, and people eat that too... what direction did idiots think 6 would go with that feedback? I came to 6 expecting a Michael Bay directed video game, and guess what? I got exactly what I asked for, and even got a little nostalgic RE1 2 3 zombie survival taste as a treat. Sure, not the direction I wanted, but that ship had sailed since RE4 already.
Anyone who came to RE6 expecting anything other than an escalation of 5 and got disappointed their baseless expectations weren't satisfied, they are just telling on themselves really.

This is probably my favorite review of the game I've seen so far. Every other review that I've come across seems to either dunk on it without any consideration to its positives, say it's awesome and ignore its shortcoming, or say its the dumb fun and gloss over the combat. You did a really good job of pointing out it's strengths and weaknesses.
On another note, I feel like I'm the only one who probably liked Leon's campaign the least. I dunno, I feel like the zombie enemies are the least fun to fight, especially with how 'grabby' they get. Stops the flow of combat dead in it's tracks, imo. And strangely, the zombies with guns seem to be more accurate than the elite j'avo. I also wish they had a Mercenaries Reunion type expansion like 5. Have Piers with his mutated arm, Simmons transforming into monster forms for his stun attacks, and Deborah with her claw face. Maybe even throw in Jill and Claire. One last thing, I really wish Ada had a proper final boss fight instead of a redo of Simmons. Imagine reaching the coccoon, but it's already opened and you have to fight a new Carla clone. A human-esque enemy to fight along the lines of Krauser in 4 or Jill & Wesker in 5, but with a combat system that could achieve in game what was done in cutscene.

While it wasn't the best, I do like the concept of various heroes in the same game since we hardly see Leon meeting Chris, plus I liked seeing Sherry as an adult, as well as the new characters. Spoilers: I kind of found the dynamic between Leon and Helena to be what killed it for me during their campaign. Every time Ada showed up, Leon's attention (understandably) seemed to focus on her over Helena. As I was playing as Helena and my friend Leon, I started to feel like my character didn't matter, even in the section where they fight her sister (Ada shows up at some point there too). Hilariously enough, I was remarking about it to my friend and we were chuckling over it until the fight with Simmons where we really started cracking up. The part in their story where Helena has to support Ada and Leon as they are fighting back to back on top of a building was the strawberry on top of the double layer cake. At that point you had a literal chasm between her and Leon to reinforce the metaphorical one and I was laughing so bad I started to cry.
Edit: I still loved playing this game Coop

I absolutely love Resident Evil 6. It's highly underrated! Great locations, character moments, and overall feels like a finale to the whole Raccoon City storyline. It slips up along the way of course (sometimes feels like it could've used more time to develop) but still, I think people hate on it too much, its no where near a bad game. However, I do think Capcom made the right choice with RE 7. Hopefully they won't forget Resident Evil 6 exists.

As a hardcore RE fan who has played every mainline game and is still looking into the rest of its history and spinoffs, I don't care what people think of RE6. Its one of the funnest games I've played in a long time and I love the hell out of it, 300+ hours and growing. It's got flaws like QTEs and a confusing story, but I think it makes up for it in spades with the best gameplay in the series and being one of the funnest co-op experiences I've had ever, second only to RE5. And hell, not many will agree but I loved the story and characters too. I thought it was a great wrap up for Leon and Ada with Helena being a badass bitch with a good story motivation, Chris goes through yet another arc but a good one and Piers is such a slept on character in the series because he's super great too, and Jake and Sherry maaan. Why do no one talk about them, their arc and relationship is amazing. All of them are great in this game. Along with having the best OST in thw series, seriously the RE6 OST slaps and is so slept on. And the FINAL BOSSES omg, so fucking grand and epic. And Mercenaries is at its absolute best, man. As someone who loves the mode to death, I can't get enough of 6's. It is the one I play exclusively on No Mercy because the gameplay and balancing is absolutely perfect, I wish for a full fledged all star cast stand alone game of Merc Mode in the style of 6, or even 5. I love it so much.
The thing with me is the more I started looking at this game and it's story as a season finale to EVERYTHING that's happened in the lore up to that point before it soft rebooted with 7 and 8, I started to enjoy the game even more than I already was. And I urge anyone who goes into it to do the same, it really works as a grand finale on everything up to that point.
The only real problem I have with RE6 is that the chapters are too long. Bare minimum, even if you know them like the back of you hand like I do, the quickest minimum time you can get with each chapter will always usually be at least an hour. That's not great, especially for soft completionists like me. But other than that, I really have no real complaint over the game. It's so so fun. A mess, but fun. And at the end of a day, if you can have fun with a game and have a good laugh while doing it, doesn't that mean ot did it's job?
I love RE6. It's not my favorite RE, that goes to 5, 8 or RE2make. But goddamn I love it so much. It so fun, it's so batshit insane, its so perfectly imperfect. It's great and got way too much hate. I firmly believe it needs a reevaluation from the RE fandom as a whole. Especially now that the series is "back on track" so to speak with 7 and 8 and that 6 didn't "ruin the franchise".

I have two question: why does Jake threatens to kill Chris over a father he didn't know? Didn't Jake think he was a dead beat and gave little shits to who he was, or am I misremembering here? Eh, I'd say it's an okay game. "Good" is a really hard stretch unless we just greatly differ on how we rank games. RE6 feels like it doesn't stand out from the pack of generic action shooters at all. It's not incredibly incompetent, but it's also no more fun than...

I just could not get over how little the game seemed to care about the enemies. They just felt splashed around the areas, without a lot of thought about placement. None of them felt dangerous, and yet conversely I took more "cheap hits" in RE6 than any other RE. Zombies spawning offscreen and doing a flying tackle without any forewarning was a regular hazard during Leon's campaign. I tried to replay it recently and had to quit halfway through Leon's campaign, and that sucked because I remembered his being the best. It just wasn't fun.
Also the guns just did not feel like they had any punch. Even the shotguns felt boring to use, and that's the worst feeling.
The post-RE4 combat engine is fine. It's great. But it just is not suited for a "fight ten zombies at once" oriented game. I can't really put my finger on it but it just Feels Bad to play, especially coming off a marathon of RE games.

Like cod ghost everyone hated that game than years later so many people love it.
But I always liked the from the start.
Probably cause they were fairly cheap at the time I got them & had someone to play with a few times. But non the less I thought re 6 was pretty good. Least they try to do something new ish

    Really good review.
I didn’t like the campaign all that much but I played *countless* hours of Mercenaries because the combat system was amazing.
If they don’t have a great Mercenaries mode in the RE4 remake I’m going to go Dr. Evil mode on humanity.

This game is already 10 years old! I remember playing it for the first time as if it wasn't that long ago.
