Resident Evil 4 Was The Game Changer

  • Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest games ever made, and its impact on the industry at large can still be felt 15+ years after its release.
Depending on who you ask, Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games ever made and the peak of the series, or RE4 is when the series really started to go off the rails, and its influence hurt the gaming world as a whole.

In fact, I think that some of the backlash that Resident Evil 4 gets is less about the game itself, and how it changed the industry at large, for better or for worse.
I also haven't touched Resident Evil 4 for over a decade...my last playthrough was shortly before RE5 launched in 2009. Part of me kept it that way because of how I held it in my mind, but it was time to revisit Resident Evil 4. Depending on what day of the week you asked me, it was my favorite game.
Resident Evil 4 is still fantastic, although now I think I prefer the 2002 remake as the best Resident Evil game, I still hold it as one of the best games ever made. Often duplicated and imitated, but pretty much never topped. Even the Resident Evil 4 Remake couldn't touch it.

RE4 is probably the most well put-together game I have ever played. It's not even my personal favorite game (I have a couple of Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and Castelvania games over it) but I can't deny its quality.
The more time passes and I revisit RE4, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that this is a "once in a lifetime" type of experience. I hardly doubt any other game can recapture its harmony between the core gameplay systems available, supreme level design, masterful encounter design, excellent pacing, attention to detail and the complementary yet untouchable artistic vision behind its music tracks and visual fidelity. It's a mesh of accidental and very deliberate creative decisions that took form in such a balanced result, so hard to replicate that not even Mikami himself was able to with The Evil Within 1 and even the Resi team while creating RE5.
Not really about the way it holds hostage the very best of enemy encounters, surprisingly deep currency system, reliable and still open enough gameplay loop, crazy boss fights, the unapologetic bizarre world surrounding it, secrets and somehow infinitely replayable campaign. It's all about how everything mentioned previously blends so well together, because...?
It really shouldn't feel this good or even work this well, except it somehow does and it's mind-boggling to even consider how a creative vision held everything together in such an effective way.
There's nothing quite like it, and for me it's hard to believe that there will be again, which is insane to consider.

I compare RE4 to Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, and Breath of the Wild. Where developers are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do to something new with an established, successful franchise, and they go absolutely fucking nuts. They cut loose with their imagination and go way above and beyond what has gone before in terms of content, production values, structure, design, everything, and forge ahead with the kind of assured confidence and financial muscle that only a franchise with a substantial built-in fanbase can provide. They go the extra mile, because they're on an unprecedented, literally game-changing roll. It doesn't happen often, but it's almost always special.
RE4 is an all-time great that is required playing for anyone who loves game design.

    • @tcrpgfan
      @tcrpgfan 2 года назад

For me, it's all about milking the mechanics as to why people who love game design should play RE4. Mainly because throughout the game if you're not interacting with something with the action button, you're shooting, knifing, or throwing a grenade at it. And it's in shooting, knifing, and grenading interactable objects that truly lend the game its depth.

Hey Boulder punch a couple things
1: I thoroughly enjoy your videos and would say you are definitely deserving of the title most under rated youtuber.
2: The music choice you use from the games is impeccable, from save room themes to title screen music your implementation is perfect.
3: I really think you should try The Evil Within, I am a huge fan of survival horror plus RE and Silent Hill, I think that game is amazing one of my favorites to return to and would love to see you do a analysis of it.
Thanks for another great video and keep up the outstanding work!

This is the first Resident Evil game where Umbrella isn't responsible for the monsters and bio organic weapons (BOW) creations. Umbrella is gone by this point, and may yet come back.
The Matilda handgun was named after the character with the same name from the movie Léon: The Professional (1994), which also had a main character called Leon.
This Resident Evil used all new enemies that were not in any of the previous games. No zombies, no Cerberus, no crows, no giant spiders, no tyrants, no hunters, no lickers made it to this installment.
This is the first Resident Evil presented in 16:9 widescreen. All previous entries were displayed in 4:3 fullscreen. This is why when the game is played on an 4:3 television it appears to be letterboxed.
The gameplay was changed after Mikami realized that many of the game designers were tired of the same formula used in other Resident Evil games.
The cult name Los Illuminados translates to "The Enlighted" in English.
The parasites, Las Plagas, translates to "the plagues" in English.
During the end boss battle, Ada Wong suddenly appears and throws a special rocket launcher that can be used to kill the boss. The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil 2 (1998).
Albert Wesker, long-time nemesis in the Resident Evil series, is only mentioned in the main game as the mastermind behind Krauser's and Ada's involvement in obtaining a Las Plagas sample. He makes a visual appearance in the 'Separate Ways' side-missions, though.
When Ada and Leon meet up in Salazar's quarters, Ada sneaks up from behind and (after a brief fight) tells him: "Long time no see". Albert Wesker says the same thing when he approaches Chris Redfield from behind in Resident Evil: Code: Veronica (2000).
Those infected and controlled by Las Plagas are called Ganados. In Spanish, "ganado" means "cattle" or "livestock". However, it is rarely used in the plural (except as a form of the verb "ganar", which means "to win" or "to earn").
The original GameCube version contains a unique glitch where sometimes after reopening a save file, Leon will move sideways instead of forward. If you reset the game and reopen the save file though, Leon will walk straight again. Another glitch caused Leon to move much faster than normal, making shooting and slicing a knife much easier.
During any cutscene in which Leon draws his weapon it will always be the handgun that you start the game with that he draws, even if you've sold it and bought a different one.
The Killer 7 handgun was named after Killer7 (2005), another Capcom game produced by Shinji Mikami. This is the only weapon in the game not to feature an exclusive upgrade.
In addition to the Mathilda, the game pays home to the movie Léon: The Professional (1994) in an unlockable "Professional" difficulty.

You simply had to be there. My only experience with Resi back in the 90's was seeing that cover art for the original game, and playing the opening level of RE2 at my uncle's place. Only when I got the Gamecube in 2002, I had to buy REmake, because it looked out of this world. It was one of the greatest video game experiences for me. A year later, I bought RE0, liked it a lot, and then 2, 3 and CVX came out on Gamecube. Bought them, loved them all.
When RE4 was announced, I was worried about the change in gameplay and perspective. Yet, I bought it on day 1. And it's still one of my most vivid gaming memories. It fastly became my favorite game of all time, even to this day, and I replay it once a year.
RE5 was a disappointment for me, but the game grew on me with every subsequent playthrough, and I really like it now. I guess the abomination that was RE6 helped a little with my view of RE5 ^^
A little correction: it's definitely Spain, because they namedrop Madrid in the game, so there is no ambiguity.

I think the remake is gonna be good. In my opinion, the reason RE 3 remake failed is because it was rushed. It was released just 1 year after the amazing RE 2 Remake. With RE4 remake, they actually had time to make it good. I'm optimistic about it. But, if RE 4 remake fails, I'm never trusting another RE remake again.
