How To Make A Sequel | Resident Evil 2 (1998)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 авг 2024
- Resident Evil 2 is one of the best examples of how to make a sequel.
Released in 1998, Resident Evil 2 followed up the landmark original and created one of the best games around. With its iterative improvements and some of the best options for replayability, it still stands at the very top of the Resident Evil titles.

So you just put out a landmark title, Resident Evil, that takes the world by storm. A game that others try to copy, with most of them falling short. A number are simply known as "resident evil clones". What do you do to follow it up?
Well in the case of Capcom, you make Resident Evil 2. A sequel with a higher budget and expectations. A sequel that's bigger, more action, higher stakes.
So, how was the end result of Resident Evil 2?
A title that general consensus touts as the superior title over the original.
While I do think the Resident Evil Remake would end up being better, Resident Evil 2 was one of the best examples of making a sequel.
Resident Evil 2 kickstarted what's regarded as the greatest year in gaming, 1998.
While I don't think Resident Evil 2 hits the highs of exploring the mansion from the first, and it is more linear, its iterations on the formula make for a better overall title. Intersecting scenarios of both characters allows for greater levels of replayability with Resident Evil 2. It takes a more grand approach to everything but doesn't lose the heart of what made the original great.
This Resident Evil 2 review/analysis/retrospective/critique will look at how Resident Evil 2 came together, the improvements it makes, the plot, comparing it to the 2019 remake, and more.

I don’t know how this turned into a jacked man with a questionable bloodline punching a larger than average rock with his closed hands with some considerable force inside a volcano but for some reason I love it
Chris and Leon both had to run from boulders. Now Chris, being the giga chad that he is, decided enough is enough. No more running and dodging giant boulders. The boulders will run from Chris.
It was the attitude Era bro
And it fkn rocked
@@steelbear2063 🤣🤣
@@steelbear2063 I always thought Chris took steroids to beat up Wesker, but your explanation makes much more sense!
Leon always made me laugh in RE2 because hes still trying to be cop while everyone is dead. Also, the woman he wants to help doesn't need it and the woman he doesn't help could've used it.
Sounds like a bit of an asshole to me
That's fucking hilarious
Typical cop. He played it perfectly 😂
Hey he just got the job lol! Lucky he got to wear it in service once before they blew the town up lmao
Well he was a rookie cop lol
Amazing to see the per-rendered cut scenes these days, I remember thinking back in 1998 "imagine how great it will be when you can control a game that looks as good as this"....
The 1st game I ever beat and multiple times.
So glad so many people enjoyed it as much as I did.
Kat fig psx games were so good they were worth experiencing over and over...especially at the time. Chrono trigger was the first for me.
Kat Fig you my kind of woman 😉
🤗 I'm glad girls love it
Claire and Leon are badass. Great characters!
This game had one of the best level progression I've ever experienced or seen.
Oh and the big comfy couch was on public television here in the USA and was somewhat popular. Not Barney level, but my 25 year old sister was obsessed with it as a toddler. She even recently completed her toy collection of all the characters from the show.
My sisters too. I always thought the clown girl was really creepy looking lol. Imagine a PT type game but with her as the monster.
I love that show, even did Loonette's morning stretch.
The music in this game is so good I can’t play the remake without playing with the original soundtrack
The Old Games, and what I mean by Old is 1, 2 ,3, CODE VERONICA, RE1 Remake, and RE0... Had the Best Music, they were like TRUE HORROR!!!!!
I Agree with You 100%!!!
Thank god I’m not the only one. RE2 music was just perfect.
@@MrZombiejoe code veronica has very meh music. A lot of it is super cheesy and not in a good way. But I agree with the others.
@@ATthemusician I Really Like CODE VERONICA'S Music, but now that you mention it, it is a Bit Cartoony like Scooby Doo Shit, but I Still have Love for it.
@@MrZombiejoe
Straight facts right there.
One of the few games I can call a masterpiece
Same bro! I’m relatively new to the resident evil franchise however last month after playing the remake I got my hands on the original and played the fuck out of it. I honestly love it more than the remake because it has so much more despite it’s old controls and graphics
I'm impressed how good the director's cut basement music fits with DSP's playing style. It's like it was written for him
I want to know the beef
I love your commitment of mentioning DSP in many videos, makes me laugh every time. You're definitely a secret detractor channel.
When I can, I will. Shoutout to Tevin.
@@BoulderPunch Yes, big ups to Tevin
I remember when this game first launched and my older brother got it. I was absolutely terrified of this game back then but came back to it when I got a few years older and fell in love with it. One of the greatest games ever.
Shew this is still my favorite survivor horror game ever. Still go back to playing on my ps3 every now and then
After playing the remake I just got the original last month and I got to say as somebody who has played the remake, I like the original a lot more.
Hope Capcom can rerelease the original PS1 games in modern platforms
Resident Evil: Director's Cut with the RE2 Demo was my intro into the world of RE as a child back in 1998. Been a huge fan ever since
A classic! Still better than the remake in some aspects!👍🤘
Its soundtrack and true A/B parallel scenarios.
@@AlastorChannel yep, with all the interconnected stuff that comes with the proper A/B scenarios
I love both games. They are great at doing their own things.
I'd seen occasional videos of that ending with the credits and music, and always assumed it was some sort of RE meme as opposed to the actual music in the game. It's hilarious, but perfect.
This was my first resident evil. I was obsessed. I love the soundtrack. I had walkthroughs and books explaining extra details. I always played it alone when I was 10 and then later played 3 with my sisters and friend. Very very nostalgic :)
The disses to DSP are among my favourite things in your videos.
The music made it so much funnier 😂😂😂
@@lonewolf_0073 Couldn’t agree more.
Who is that moron? I only know him from these reviews lol
@@Snowy265 some guy who sucks at games lol
@@Snowy265 Oh I think you’ll know exactly who it is once you see this ruclips.net/video/G2A_rVjyNMI/видео.html. Watch at your own peril but if you still don’t know, I guess the previous reply sums it up pretty well lol.
RE2: best game of the classic trilogy
RE1: best game of the remake trilogy
Best RE of the classic trilogy is RE4 😁
@@maratnugmanov RE4 is not a classic RE, and it doesn't belong to the trilogy either. Nice game, but off topic imho.
@@novembrinewaltz90 it's was sarcasm 😉
AMAZING, I had no idea there were so many Canadian connections and the big comfy couch connection is outstanding.
I really love this game. I'm kinda disappointed that the different scenarios and zapping system never caught on with other games. It's such a great idea and adds amazing reply value to the game. It has so much potential for modern game designers to use today which is why it was a bit disappointing it wasn't fully utilized in the remake.
In RE6 the stories interconnect, but yeah other than that the zapping system never returned where for example you can leave a weapon for another character.
I like the continuity of the 1998 version thanks to the zapping system. Like Leon and Clare experience the same things even though certain event already happened to / resolved by the other character.
Another banger video my dude. Also, I don’t even want to imagine how their ancient 1995 Excel spreadsheets looked after they laid out the zapping system intertwining storylines
I look forward to these Darksidephil insults like I look forward to Stan Lee cameos lol
That DSP caught me off guard XD

One thing I enjoyed about the remake of RE2, was the addition of RESTROOMS!!
I shall never understand why the police station in the classic game didn't have restrooms. Wazupwitdat? 😆
Cops probably supposed to do some obscure statue puzzle to access the secret rest rooms lol.
@@skycloud4802 😆😆😆
This and silent hill 2, my fav games of all time. Capcom made a phenomenal remake of RE2 so konami, we need you to take a page from their book and give us a proper silent hill remake. Or hell, even a completely new SH game. Just please do the franchise some justice.
Resident Evil 2 remains my favorite of the classic series. Yes I include REmake in thar regard. I just love the pacing and structure of 2's police station.
Also I thought Annette Birkin in the original was more of a bitch since she was more obsessed with the G-Virus to point of putting a sample of it in her DAUGHTER'S PENDANT which made her a target for both William AND Mr. X.
The pendant didn't make Sherry a target for William. In Claire A/Leon B, William is looking for Sherry in order to impregnate her with his embryos. Cherry drops the pendant and Ada picks it up. Mr X ends up targeting Ada.
In Leon A/Claire B, William doesn't come after Sherry even though she doesn't drop the pendant. Mr X then ends up going after Sherry.
Well what a welcome addition to my day
Been waiting for you to do this one and I appreciate you took your time.
This was my first RE game, I rented it for my Nintendo 64 when I was 10 years old. I still remember that night, I was terrified but captivated lol
I Fell in LOVE with this Game So Much, I was SO HYPED for the Release of RESIDENT EVIL 3 NEMESIS, I Never Felt that way for Any Game then I did for NEMESIS, but Only cause of my LOVE for Part 2!!!... I Fuckin LOVED Part 2 So Fuckin Much, I was even thinking Before NEMESIS came out that it Still wouldn't be as Good as Part 2, and when NEMESIS Did come out, I was Right, but Still Loved NEMESIS anyway!!!
RESIDENT EVIL 2 Is To This DAY, THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME, and Will NEVER Be Matched!!! It's My LIFE!!!!!
Resident Evil 2 Dualshock ver. One Is my favorite horror game series for sure since I was child hood in 1999 after Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
One of my favorite games of all time and a huge part of my childhood. The remake was incredible, very slick and well produced but it also missed out on some of the finer elements that made the original so memorable, like the zapping system and the different scenarios. I still think it's the best of the whole series even though later titles brought more technical improvements and innovations to the franchise.
I can't get enough of this channel. Love these in depth reviews!
First time I experienced it was *technically* the remake, and honestly I wish the color pallette wasn't so... washed compared to the original. I get they were going for realism horror but I miss that late 90's color saturation maaaaaaan!
Demons and Dark Souls1 vs Dark Souls 3
I weep in low contrast :(
13:37 She also was the voice of Jubilee on the X-Men 90s series
Big comfy couch was on PBS in most places so there's probably a lot of people that know about it.
alyson court was also in X-men, along with catherine disher the voice actress for jill.
catherine voiced jean grey.
The sound track of this game… along with 1, nemesis, code Veronica, is mesmerising! Captures the essence of the outbreak perfectly 👌 I often listen to the soundtrack to these and reminisce about the 90s and how awesome everything was before social media
Thank you for mentioning the lack of the B Scenarios, so many people ignore that it's missing and thus about half of the game story is missing as cutscenes are reused and now make no sense interms of timeline when before Leon A and Claire B and Claire A and Leon B fit together perfectly. Resident Evil 2 Remakeis an incomplete game and it would only get worse Resident Evil 3 Remake which practically just a highlight reel of the original. If they wanted to just be one linear story they should have just adapted Claire A and Leon B instead of giving us an incomplete version of A and B for both.
Above the gameplay and story, what I liked most about RE2 and it's remake are the characters. Leon and Claire are very likable protagonists to me.
Big comfy couch was HUGE in America! I'm from Massachusetts, USA. It was my sister's favorite show growing up. She even had her own Molly doll.
great video on this amazing classic, your RE content is always superb....
Born and raised in California and I watched Big Comfy Couch as a kid!! My mom still references it sometimes!
It always makes me laugh when you drag DSP, especially because he moved to my town. I haven't met him, and thank G-d for that.
I honestly still think OG RE2 is my favorite RE game of all time next to REmake 1 on gamecube. There is something very special about the soundtrack and having Claire and Leon meet up with each other alot more. They took a lot of their meet ups away in REmake 2, as well as the separate scenarios. I really wish they kept it A and B.
Me: i've watched 500 reviews of classic RE2
Also me: time to watch another one :D
I don't know how popular it was in the states, but I remember watching it when I was younger. Now I can't help but think of Claire being all "Heyyyyy, who made this big mess?! Well I have to clean it up, it's only fair!" *PROCEEDS TO VIOLENTLY DESTROY HER MUTATED ENEMIES*
Come to think of it, that just makes this masterpiece even better!
I played this last month and it still holds up. I prefer these fixed camera Resident Evils to the modern TPS/FPS games.
@cmdrnGrief tbh you get on RUclips too lol
Absolutely outstanding video thanks for uploading it!😎👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I can't believe you haven't done this already
The Crazy thing is The original Version of RE2 or 1.5 was like 70% complete and they scrapped most of it and made the Iconic sequel we all know and love today. and they kinda rushed it to meet a deadline but it still against all odds has become arguable the most popular game of the franchise.
This and code Veronica are the definitive re games for me, the overarching lore, the atmosphere, the everything really sells. The fact that future re games love to recount on the iconic raccoon city incident really is a testament to re2's story being really good.
chris punches that guitar
I didn't realize big comfy couch was a Canadian program, i used to watch that show constantly as a kid!
I like RE2make more than any of the original 90s games, more for its excellent gameplay than its treatment of the story. The modern controls are a literal game changer and help the experience feel much more natural and immersive. It took me a long time to figure out how to move effectively on the PS1 when I first tried RE in the 2010s. Here that's not a problem, but despite third-person shooting, the balance of survival horror tension works super well on those first few playthroughs. While the original soundtrack can't be beaten, it's a little disappointing that RE2 '98 has the better zapping and A/B format. World reactivity across multiple playthroughs is such a cool concept and I feel like there's room for an RE game where your first playthrough can have a truly huge impact on your second one. Dead enemies you killed the first time who get up with V-ACT mutations or multiple exclusive solutions to puzzles that force you to take a different route the 2nd time could make that second playthrough really magical.
Resident Evil 2 was my very first RE game in the series that I've played back in 1998. I spent a lot of hours on this game. Good times. Gamers today won't understand the feeling of playing this game back then during time period. It's not just the nostalgia but an explosion of the culture of survival horror gaming in its infancy. It's similar to my point of view and getting blown away when VHS and Betamax media jump to CDs and DVDs. I remember jumping from 8 bit to 16 bit gaming and then getting my mind blown away with the 3D with this game. I didn't really question back then at the time that it was just prerendered backgrounds but the voice acting combined with the creepy atmosphere, sound effects and music was amazing to me! It blew me away how good the audio and music was for this game. So it's not just the graphics but how different gameplay was. Music and sound effects were also a huge part of this game's lasting power! I also love being able to play both Leon and Claire. I remember those Lickers and Mr. X scaring the crap out of me the first time. Man, time flies! Now we have RE2 remake and RE3 remake which I also loved! Here's to hoping that Capcom keeps making us fans happy with more announcements and reveals in the future in this survival horror series!
I LOVED Big Comfy Couch!! Love this video!
Idk why but now I'm imagining Chris going "Guys check it out!" and completely bombing at Stairway to Heaven
Man i got this game on a demo disc and could not figure out the controls for weeks. Once i beat the demo i just could not wait for the game to drop. Probably my favourite ps1 era game ever. Spent so many hours i knew each scenario inside out. The nostalgia i get from this is next to none. Just a masterpiece of a game and a really important game in gaming history
I love these reviews all the classics
Re2 original & 1.5 ❤❤ my favorites in the series
chris playing guitar was the funniest thing ive seen in a long time
I never noticed till now. A few aspects of 1.5 (besides Walkers costume) made it to the RE2 remake. The shooting range the door shutters....
Alyson Court also was the voice of Jubilee in the 90's X-Men animated series
loved the review
I was just rewatching your RE5 review lol.
Love both the OG and the Remake! Gotta dust off that old PS1 and boot it back up!
Im running through your resident evil playlist bro making fun of darkside phil with that directiors cut music is priceless 😂🤣😂🤣
Dude... Claire being Loonette from Big Comfy Couch just blew my fucking mind... How did i never know that???!
Claire Redfield's jacket has the words 'Made in Heaven' written on the back. This text is a direct reference to the Band Queen and its album 'Made in Heaven'.
During the end boss battle, Ada Wong suddenly appears and throws a rocket launcher weapon that can be used to kill the boss. The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil 4.
According to the official Capcom page, Wesker was there when Ada fell and saved her. This would make sense as Ada joins forces with Wesker later on in the series.
The game came out during a particularly important period for 3D gaming, as 1998 saw other notable releases like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), Metal Gear Solid (1998), Banjo-Kazooie (1998) and Half-Life (1998) change the gaming industry economically and aesthetically.
First Resident Evil game released on a Nintendo console. The original had a game boy color version but it was never officially released.
Although the N64 version had better character models, the FMV cutscenes ran poorly due to the fact that the console was cartridge based.
After the tanker crashes into the police car during the opening cinematic, a "No Trucks" sign can be seen among the burning truck wreckage.

Big Comfy Couch was pretty popular back when I was a little kid in the 90's; I live in Florida, as far south as you can go in the US, along with Texas, and it was just as popular down here on public television as anywhere else, including Canada (we steal a lot of shows from Canada, as well as outsourcing some movie and TV show productions to Canada; Disney especially does it all the time with their live-action studio sitcoms, and has done so regularly since the late 90's or early 2000's especially.
But yeah, as far as the BCC, I even had one or two episodes on VHS growing up. I was just the right age for it when it came out and the nostalgia stuck with me ever since, after that lol no joke though
big comfy couch was great back in the day, We staties definitely loved it eh!
The dry wit of the analysis of why Chris owns a les paul guitar is one of the most charismatic humor I've seen on the youtube.
Just got a notification that this video was uploaded. Strange
I would a resident evil set in Canada, in the north of Manitoba, get some infected polar bears, that would slap
My favorite version of the story is Leon A/Claire B, regardless of "canon". In this version Leon doesn't meet Sherry until the train.

1998 I was eleven years old, I traded tomb raider 2 and £20 for RE2 on release day, one of my favourite games of all time.
The VTMB ending had me fuckin' rolling.
are you going to do a resident evil 6 review. Ik it might take a while but ik u would make a great vid on the sequel to the boulder punching adventure
At some point.
Resident Evil 2's soundtrack and scoring is the best in a game Ive ever played. It just nails it. 100% match for the gameplay. I have all the titles rdy to go for when my kids are old enough, this is MUST play for them.
The first time I heard that credit music I lost it. Like so cheesy it’s amazing. Wicked bass solo too
I grew up in America and knew about Big Comfy Couch as it was syndicated here
Resident Evil 2 was my actual first experience with the Franchise.
2:31- Yeah, I heard that Kamiya would block people.
6:40- The Scenario Story was what I liked about the original RE2. This was one of the step-ups compared to the first Resident Evil. I don't understand how the RE2 Remakers messed up what made the original RE2 great!
10:37- The solution was moving the two left shelves to the right. It took me years to realize that.
12:28- Sugimura was also a writer for the Tokusatsu Franchise.
13:31- So I've caught wind that Leon S Kennedy's original voice - Paul Haddad had passed. 😔 Thanks to my Subscription named SpartanUruk.
15:53- LOL
16:42- It's a shame that I would have liked to see the Classic cutscenes recreated in the RE2 Remake. Same with the factory up to the front of the lab office which were SHOWN in RE0. I felt that we got empty promises in the offical RE2 Remake.
That guy cocked a shotgun twice while holding a crossbow. Impressive.
I was a Nintendo fan. Started with Nes, bought Game Boy, Super Nes and N64. But when I saw a friend playing RE 2 on PS1 I sould my N64 and bought a PS1 and from there on I am with Sony. I do buy the portable Nintendo consoles of course.
Big comfy couch was dope! (An American fan here)
Also, were the lickers not in the remake?
Chris should play some unholy confessions on his guitar
The Police Station in RE2 in the 1.5 build had a target range? I bet it also had a bathroom.
I wasnt expecting a DSP reference here haha
Let’s go Boulder boys
Just finished this game today. First time I beat Leon B as well. An absolute and undeniable masterpiece.
The Last Of US to me it's an amateur work compared to this. So much care, so many good ideas, it's well written and passed, they use the lore perfectly. What I mean by that is that the lore adds context to the story but there is a well narrated plot. Unlike Dark Souls or Hollow Knight for example.
Once again. Masterpiece.
Big Comfy Couch was fairly popular in the United States.
Still the peak of the franchise, and one of the best gaming soundtracks.
That DSP clip in Library hurt to watch.
In my claire A playthrough I accidentally took both the side pack and smg so leon B got nothing. Damn
The game that got me into survival horror in 1998 🧡.
I wasn't gonna click on the video until I saw his name lol. Respect.
That shot at lolcow Phil is hilarious 🤣
I really wish they would do a Resident Evil 2 and 3 REmake like they remade Resident Evil 1 for the Gamecube
