- Resident Evil Revelations is one of the best spinoffs in the franchise, and its quality sits well within the mainline titles for what it set out to do.

Released in 2012 for the 3DS, Resident Evil Revelations serves as a bit of a middle ground of the focus on survival horror with the more action approach after 4. Resident Evil Revelations makes a few tweaks to the formula (like the addition of scanning). Some work better than others.
The best comparison I feel would be the Lost In Nightmares DLC from RE5. Resident Evil Revelations is a fun little romp, about 6 hours for the campaign for me. Raid mode takes a different approach than mercs but has its own values as well.
The story of Resident Evil Revelations is structured like a TV drama that keeps switching through characters and keeps you guessing...for better or for worse.
Resident Evil Revelations is simplified as it was 3Ds game first, so it mostly strips things down to the core of what RE is, but the core it has is excellent. Resident Evil Revelations does make a few tweaks to the formula as well, some working better than others.
This Revelations review/analysis/critique/retrospective takes a look at how the game came together, how it plays, tweaks to the formula, raid mode, and more.

Wait are you Jarbo?
Wait so Jessica was a spy.. for the FBC? Wait... Jessica... J... Jess... Jessie. F, B... C? My God... It was there in front of us the whole time!
The control and the resident evil universe! They've crossed over! They've always been crossed over! We just couldn't see it on account of The additional dimensions of the 3DS!
Kind of explains why Jesse was so easy there to put down the entire office of her new coworkers first day on the job... It's all been an act! It's always been an act! The SoCal basic Bee, The youthful and determined adventurous Wrangler of floppies and office equipment! They were all lies! Personalities curated and worn to suit her purposes, to be swapped or discarded like any other attire, shed like a reptile would its skin..
And the question on no one's mind is.. what is Alan Wake have to do with any of this.. and why does he have to do something with it? And why are we okay with that? Of all the characters remedy has come up with.. why is that one somehow the central hub for the connected universe? Also does this mean we're going to get gun foo? back in the resident evil timeline?
These are questions that need answers.. and yet if they're smart.. they won't.
Revelations to me was a glimpse of hope for horror REs to comeback during the action focused era of RE.
But like every single new "horror focused" RE game to come out since the action genre began, they all have almost zero enemy variety
Idk what's with capcom, outside of bosses revelations had like, 3-4 enemies, RE7 had 2, Re8 had 5......I just dont get it
@@rdowg Revelations 1 had a small budget to work with but some money at least...seeing how great the graphics & soundtrack were. Also takes money to implement such a detailed game for the 3DS and then subsequently adapt it for bigger consoles. Rev 2 had an even lower budget to work with haha
To me revelations 1 and 2 feel like original re in third person😊
Um...not really revelations is pretty action focused.
@@rdowg There were a few more than four enemy types aha but yea, they could've used more, or at least mixed the lesser common types together with the 'main' enemies more frequently to create memorable encounters. I'm guessing that's more to do with the fact it was on crappy 3DS hardware, so RAM limitations wouldn't let them have so much variety in the same room at once.
But I agree, 7 and 8 had a sore lack of enemy variety... Here's hoping they give 9 the budget it deserves!
Revelations is such an underrated game, same with revelations 2. Can’t believe this game turned 10 years old yesterday. Remember picking it up day one for the 3DS and having “maaaaaay daaaay” stuck in my head from dying so many times on the first “boss” battle lmao
I think Revelations 2 is way overrated. I see it get almost nothing but praise. But I think it's rather mediocre overal. I didn't like the story, Barry's daughter is one of the least likeable protagonists of any game, the coop is complete garbage and the script is just trash. It was a major disappointment compared to Rev 1, IMO.
I'm huuuman
It has a consistent average of 8/10 across nearly all publications and user voting sites. Hardly “underrated”. Time for people to start finding a new word to beat into the ground.
@@bernielomax4702 Okay and? High scores doesn’t mean something can’t be underrated lmao. It’s a lesser known RE game, so idk what to tell you lil bro. Seems like 57 other people agree with me too. Time for people(specifically you) to find ways to have normal discussions over opinions they disagree with. GG on being 11 months late and bringing nothing to the conversation btw 👏🏻
@@bernielomax4702 who cares about publication ratings lol? IGN gave *God Hand* a 35%, while the user score has a 92%, focus on user ratings, publication ratings are a joke.
Rachel made for an awesome boss fight, especially on my initial playthrough on the 3DS. The music is terrifying, the way she charges at you at full force and still having her consciousness intact. Just like the Comms Officer.
Rachel fight freaks me out. her movement, her 'found you' and the tight corridor surrounded by all those ooze
The way both bosses speak while chasing you is unsettling it creeped me out the first playthrough
Rachel was fantastic. Unfortunately, while I loved the buildup to the comms officer, the organic circular saws were far too silly for me and the whole fight became a laugh.
Love Rachel
Really liked Rachel and her character design, wish Jessica had died instead of her.
After 6, Revelations was nice little comeback to the action/horror blend of 4 while retaining the survival horror aspects of the classic games.
Didn’t this come out before 6? or did you play this afterwards?
@@ryanhowe6543 6 came out in October 2012. The original 3DS release of Revelations was January of 2012 while the home console ports were in May of 2013.
I knew that, I was just curious about if you played revelations after 6
It must pain you that 6 is STILL so popular today and loved more than hated. Does it bother you? Yall purists are a tiny fraction of the fan abse, that yells very loud. The reality is 6 is one of the best selling and averages more players daily than 7 does, and always has.
IF capcaom still made games like the "classics" it would be dead and sell 100 copies. Because thats how many purists there are.
@@jonathansoko1085 6 is good in its own way but definitely not loved by the majority of the re community and it’s not better than 4 or 5
This was actually the first RE game I played. I still remember most of my time playing it fondly.
What I loved most about this game is the main menu theme
Sounds like bioshock
It gives me that stranded vibe
I like this game more than REV2, and tbh some characters (like Parker) are pretty cool. But some of them are incredibly cringy, and story wise can confuse you. Gameplay wise being able to move while shooting was a great choice (just like 6), specially after 5 (which is the order I played this game when it came out). Cool vid as always!!
Thought all the new characters were cringy. Glad they were all one shots.
I like Rev 2 but I find both games very scary for different reasons, but generally I have always and will always Believe in Barry Burton. Having my boy get his day in the sun was so worht it.
The more I think about it in retrospective, the crazier I find how you don't actually go to Terragricia after its destruction. A ruined waterbound metropolis likely crawling with experimental bioweapons... It's basically just a background prop for 99% of the game.
The whole city was solar nuked to eliminate all bioweapons. I would be surprised if it was still on the map.
@@ghost245353 But it is. The ruins are clearly visible from the shore.
@@arctik2928. But mostly unaccessible
I want a Rev3 so much. I loved that while they looked nice they weren't so graphically demanding at the time, which made them easier to play.
10:32 Wow. I had no idea this was the same voice actress as Liara. I just recently finished Legendary Edition and Resident Evil Revelations, but I never even noticed it was the same person. I loved using Liara's Singularity Attack in Mass Effect. Eager to see what BioWare does with the Mass Effect TV Show 🎮🔫📺
The HD Remaster of Revelations 1 could have used more puzzles from the 3DS, but some reason they didn't include it. I'd like to have more to do on the ship, similar to RE1 Deadly Silence where they DO have some interesting gameplay mechanics, also the puzzles in that game.
Pretty much the reason I bought a 3ds. Loved every minute of this game, and played it a shit ton with mercenaries. To me, this game might very well be what saved the franchise (considering some of the prople who made it also worked on re7).
Raid mode is sooo goood. All I want is it on the RE engine
For a 3DS game it exceeded expectations, I played it on Xbox ONE, with the updated graphics, if this whole game was in the 3DS (never played it on 3DS) it was one of the best games the 3DS has offered, in Xbox feels like it may need some more mechanics, but for 3DS, Daaaaaaaaam.
Saved the franchise? No, that’s re7
The ghost ship theme (ride on sea) was one of the best themes I've heard from the RE series. And for a 3DS game this was actually scary on some parts and intense
Definitely ghost ship setting was an amazing idea perfect for creepy atmosphere
I find the shooting in this game to be very unsatisfying
Enemies are total bullet sponges.
The Suit was the reason I played this game, haha
Loved the game but honestly, I want to see how the original story would've played it before it got scrapped because it sounds insane.
This game is well-known for having the most hecking difficult Tyrant fight in the whole series, even playing in normal mode xD
I love this sub saga! Looking forward to what your thoughts are about REV2 too.
I know I'm a year late but it's so true. I remember having to find an exploit to be able to barely beat it on PS3 because it was literally impossible
I loved that fight, best re boss fight in my opinion
Hey there, 2 years late lol. I must conquer. I played this the year it launched on the 3DS. All the way through and loved every minute of it. I'm currently replaying the RE series and I'm on this one. Twas a breeze until that final boss. Died 3 times and decided to put it down for a fee days lol. Wouldn't be as difficult if Chris was programmed to help at least a little. Instead he just stands to the side and mag dumps his pistol the whole time. Moral support I guess.
I still can't believe, how good the Soundtrack in this game is.
Music and Atmosphere just delivers on that ship.
I hadn't thought about it but you're right. A Metroid Prime style use of the scanner to observe environments, gather information, and even solve certain environmental puzzles would have made it a lot more interesting of a gadget.
Revelations had some fun game play, good mixed moments of action and suspense but man... the story one of the most convoluted, dumbest, most contrived plotlines in the entire series!
I wished it focused only on Jill and her partner instead of the other parts of the game. And if they gave us more puzzles and enemies on the ship. It would of made this game way more memorable.
I was so disappointed when they showed that the 2 nerds characters were still alive at the end.
Hated them so much that when they're caught in that explosion I was quite happy xD
Exactly. The idea of an RE game taking place on a cruise ship is a great concept, but it was so badly done and left with plenty of missed opportunities. Plus they really went for a TV show kind of feel with all the characters switching (I didn't care for most of them) and that "previously on RE revelations" intro at each section of the game.
With the direction the series had been going, when this game came out it was a spark of hope. I'll always remember the opening with dark atmosphere and enemies that weren't going down easy, running low on ammo. It was immediately such a great feeling of old RE titles. Hooked me from the start.
I feel like it also helped that my whole experience with the game was on the 3ds with the lights out, propped up in bed with headphones on. Every night I'd thoroughly play one chapter and save the next chapter for the next evening.
I’ve sadly not played this game since it came out, so I didn’t remember hardly any of it at all. I do remember enjoying it though, while thinking the enemies felt pretty unresponsive and I couldn’t ever gauge whether I was doing much damage. This video was great for a refresher!
replaying this game atm. Raid mode still hooked me up like in the good 3DS days
I never could get into Raid. The RPG elements made it feel grindy to me.
@@eeyuup Kinda true.... I prefer the REV2 RAID Mode cause less of a grind
I really hope we see a third one, there was alot of elements from both 1 and 2 that I really enjoyed
My god a Trailer Park Boys shout out in a Resident Evil retrospective. I love it.
Got to treat em like dogs.
Let's go, smokes
I need to come back & finish this game.
I got myself in a bad spot where I’m trying to escape both Rachel, & the countdown with low ammo & health resources.
Raid mode was also a fun spin on the horde minigame, & It’s neat that 8’s Mercenaries borrowed from it for a change.
I ran into the same issue during my first playthrough! That part of the game is where you realize that classic RE ammo conservation, and that stupid Genesis tool are key throughout the game!
Resident evil vids; you keep making them, we keep watching them
Great review. I enjoyed this game a lot as well as Rev2. The only problem I had was with the controls as it carried over from the 3DS, controlling the characters just felt like they had no weight and I was on a grid.
Just an extra note, collecting the handprints gives you a sniper rifle and a pistol, but yeah I wish more lore came from the scanner
Nice vid as always. I'm one of the people who prefer the REv series to mainline at this point as it feels more RE to me and it's nice to see it gain more attention lately for whatever reason. I also prefer Raid mode to Mercs as I like the progression aspect of it, I've sunk a few hundred hours into REv2 simply because of its Raid Mode lol. Here's hoping for REv3 sooner rather than later and I hope they use Jake and Sherry as the stars of it.
The ship setting is great! Right near the top with the Spencer Mansion and the RE 4 Village!
Can’t wait to hear your REV2 review.
We need Jill back for Resident Evil 9
Jill > Chris
@@mtb5431 Indeed. Personally I would like at least a game to have all four mainline RE protagonists (Leon, Claire, Chris and Jill) and specifically have Claire and Jill and Leon and Jill interact with each other, since that never happened on-screen before.
Resident Evil 9 would be the perfect opportunity for that I think, at least one of the last ones to do so before they become old geezers.
Awesome! I just finished this last month for the first time. I quite enjoyed it
The story to the Netflix Infinite Darkness series is much more like a Revelations story than that of the other animated movies.
That is an insult to the Revelations games, because Infinite Darkness is just awful.
But Revelation is actually good.
I'm not talking about the quality of the story. I'm talking about the premise with hidden agenda, secrets, and betrayals.
When I first watched Infinite Darkness, it felt like the first draft of a Revelations game before they polished it.
The seed was there, but never given the right treatment.
I really enjoyed Infinite Darkness, but it was waaay too short. And there’s like no buildup or mystery. Things just happen for 2 episodes, Shen Mei tells Leon everything, and then it ends after a pretty anticlimactic fight where Claire didn’t get to do much. I think a lot of these problems could’ve been fixed with a couple more episodes and a few more passes over the script.
Can't wait for your Revelations 2 video
I love this game l think it’s a hidden gem and it underrated
That last act/episode (sunken ship) gives me heavy Bloodborne vibes. I love it!! Definitely have to give this one a go someday.
6:52
Actually they do warp. I remember last time I played, I was Jill and I accidentally left Parker behind when I took an elevator. When I got to my destination, I went down a hallway and heard other footsteps, and when I turned I saw Parker rushing to me from behind. It spooked me, but made me laugh more than anything.
This game had no right to be as good as it was for just being a spinoff. Some of its ideas have even lived on to the latest entries in the franchise. Very under-appreciated!
My favorite line in this game was when Chris said: "keith, quint... smokes! lets go!"
Yeeeey thanks for covering these games. I feel like not a lot do deep dives of the revelations games :)
Great to play them!
hey thanks for bringing my attention to Lost in Nightmares. I had no idea this DLC exists, let alone that I own it. they hid it pretty well in the "Extras" menu.
I love this game. The sequel was good too, just not as good as this.
Played this game on my 2ds and loved it I think its a great mix between new and old resident evil
I played it originally on the 3ds and it was awesome. I was dumbstruck on how impressive it was playing such a good Re game on a handheld. Definitely made it one of my favorites.
I like Jills wetsuit...
🥴
Same
Everyone love jill wetsuit in this one😁
I like her fat booty
This and her RE5 battle suit..lord.
I love the drama style story and gameplay, revelations gives me hope for RE
I hope there's more revelations games to come. They're so fun.
Yes new boulder punch vid , get in 👍🎥
One of my good gaming memories is playing RE: Revelations on my 3DS during a stormy night and the power is out.
Was almost distracted the entire game with the cake bouncing on the screen.
Plot twist: The cake is a lie, at least when it comes to Chris and Jill potentially hooking up.
@@Jolis_Parsec the cake is a lie because the camera was waist up
I can't wait to play this game in full and yes, the demo creeped me out when I 1st played it lol
Also, I didn't know the great Neil Kaplan voiced Jack Norman 🙊🤯😭
For me this was a return to form after the debacle that was RE6. I really liked, and Loved the new raid mode, that was perfected on rev 2
10:19
Ali Hillis is her name and she's amazing. She also voiced Lightning in FF13
i didn't care much for Revelations but i did love the atmosphere, horror at sea is very underrated
i love this game, and it is the game that got me to fall in love with the series.
Playing this on the 3ds was great. The demo actually made me buy the full game.
I've only played through Revelations once, and never got on with its Raid Mode. Revelations 2, however, I love, and the control improvements (notably a dedicated dodge button!) have had me playing Raid Mode for years! Great fun!
I look forward to your thoughts on that entry.
(Side note, I believe RE: Village started life as a Revelations title, but became worthy of the main series, with some reworking)
Did not know that....Village would've honestly been better as a Revelations game had it not been for Ethan Winters which made more sense to call it 8.
@@benyang2427 Yep, agreed. It has more Revelations about the RE series in it than most Revelations games! 😅 Also Ada was originally going to be in it, til quite late on apparently, I've seen concept art of her, she was going to help out with her bow gun.
I enjoyed this game while I was playing it, but unfortunately only the terrible skyscraper sequences and the final boss stuck with me. The only good moment I can remember is looking for that early boss while he's screaming for help in another room.
That's the problem with tedious sections in games. You don't want to play it, so you do it in smaller chunks, resulting in you actually spending more time to finish than the sections that youre having so much fun playing that you breeze through it in a day.
Some elements of the game seem a little goofy at times but i like how they designed the monster about (mostly) marine life.
About Raid mode i think it's my favourite thing of the side games in this series. Being able to perfectly execute a level can be very challenging solo and without the upgrades you can see people have on video on RUclips. You need to use precisely this or that weapon or bomb with certain enemies (that are weak to those), find the stun spot, being able to dodge, etc. The main problem is that here and there you need to grind to have that bit of ammo/damage to do it and at the end of the LONG journey you need to perfect some stages and hope to certain upgrades to drop. It's a HUGE problem solo and without those it's basically impossible to complete all the end levels perfectly. But compared to the Raid mode of the sequel is still a very nice challenge if you want to test your skill to the limit.
Where can i install resident evil survivor on pc? I had once a cd from my grandfather who buy it in china but i lost the cd and i want to have my childhood memories back.
And where can i install RE Operation racoon city with ALL the dlcs since i cant buy it from steam because of localization?
And where can i play all the other games that aren't on pc. I know from emulation, but from which sites should i take the emulation? And those emulation can run with mouse and keyboard?
The Pirate Bay games are cracked & put there with full m&k as well as controller support
I really enjoyed this one when my brother had his 3DS. I didn't really play much of the Raid mode though.
I'm really curious where you're from Mr. Punch, your accent sounds a lot like mine. Another banger of a video, by the way.
You can scan for weapon upgrades as well.
I actually just started replaying this game recently.
I like playing Revelation with Italian voices and English subtitles. Gives it a nice Italian/Euro Horror vibe. Same with RE6.
I got to try that
@@michaelrubino5897 it's pretty neat, especially if you're a fan of 1980s Italian/Euro Horror. I was actually playing RE6 with Italian voices and music from the band Goblin instead of the RE6 OST, goblin did a lot of soundtracks for Italian horror movies back then.
@@michaelrubino5897 ruclips.net/video/Afy9ty_QTQI/видео.html that's a clip from RE6, the music managed to time up perfectly with the over the top shark fight, it's pretty funny.
Makes sense since the game takes place around Italy
@@fojisan2398 good point, never made that connection before.
Really liked revelations, but revelations 2 I would argue is one of the most underrated re spins off. Fantastic game
It really is. I think it has the best co-op mechanics in the RE series and it's just a fun game overall. Coming off of RE6, Rev2 was the first RE game that I was expecting to suck. It really surprised me at how well designed it is. I love too what they did with Barry, such a good representation of his character.
@@jankmedia1985 loved Barry in that. His relationship with Moria too
Rev2 way better. Unlike Rev1 it actually focused on the characters we’re invested in and the new characters were interesting.
@@mtb5431. Nah, REV1 is way better.

It’s still a pretty damn fun game tbh especially if you play it on switch or other stronger systems. Plus it’s always nice to just finally get more of jill it always seems she doesn’t get much time in games it’s Leon or Chris. It’s also a great choice for a setting having it on an abandoned ship

I fondly remember this as my first “digital-only” purchase. Nowadays the only physical games I own are in storage.
This was honestly one of my favorite RE games and one of the most stunning games on the 3DS.
Had it on pc then got the switch version for the ghost ship chaos and blue weapons
9:05 Best Jill ever!!! 🥰🥰🥰
I really enjoyed Revvy1, as I’ve come to call it. The Queen Zenobia is the best Boat setting BY FAR in the series, and really felt like a return to form where the setting itself is a character in the tale. I dig the opportunity to play as so many other characters, all with their own load out and unique quirks. The overall plot was a bit convoluted but ultimately wasn’t too detrimental to the very strong gameplay. This is one of my all time favorite in the franchise and I’ve played every entry since the very first PS1 game.
Easily my favourite in the series. I like booting it up every once in awhile and replaying the story.
Enemies were very Shadows over Innsmouth, cool motif
The spinning window on the tugboat is the best part of the game imho. Also Raymond looks like Ronald Mcdonald on meth. Still.. Love this game.
This looked so good on 3DS I bet they could have ported RE 4 to the system! I wish they did.
Blud heard Jessica and locked in. 😂 12:33
I loved the RER1 theme, being stranded on an abandoned ship full of creatures, and a government agent being the protagonist.
I have always thought Jessica's voice actress sounded familiar. Now I can't see Liara the same way again.
I really love this game. And as a interquel, I also like it.
Can't believe you reduced Raymond to Conan O'Brian lol. He's the catalyst for the game's entire story.
I definitely liked REV2 more, but I'm glad this game brought back that classic RE itch
Loved playing this on 3DS with the Circle Pad Pro! Best graphics on the system! Jill Valentine is bae !
I'm playing this game right now.
one of the best portable games ever made
The graphics were great on the original 3DS, but when it was ported to consoles and PC, the graphics and layout/hud presentation was spectacular. Though my main gripe is there is a lack of violence and gore in this game.
In the handheld section you forgot to mention Resident Evil Deadly Silence, a re-release of the original Resident Evil One on DS with some tweaks like skippable doors, altered soundtrack, and use of the touch pad for some modes.
It's actually my preferred version for RE 1, not counting remake.
In the US it’s Deadly Silence.
@@Artersa Corrected! Don't know why I typed Deadly Sins lol
I'm a massive fan of this game. Bring back Parker! (And Sheva, while we're at it).

He *pries* her off like nothing. The density of this man know no limits.
Replaying this game years later, i realized the only segment worth the praise imo is jill’s segments simply for the fact it kept the most horror elements.
