I didn't grow up with tank controls but I found them really easy to get used to when I played Silent Hill 2 years ago and later Resident Evil. They're a little alien compared evey modern game's standardized control schemes but after 5 minutes of setting your mind to learning how they work it's a walk in the park. I never really understood the big fuss over them.
The big fuss is what you said, taking to learn them. And 5 minutes is generous, you can get used to them almost instantly. I guess people don't like to put any effort and would rather disorient themselves and wiggle the joystick in every single direction every time camera changes angles
I'm pretty sure when many first played Mario 64 when it was brand new, they had to get used to its revolutionary control scheme before diving in the main game. I have to say though, I love how both Mario 64 and Resident Evil start the player off in a safe environment before properly engaging with the gameplay. Makes getting used to the game feel after some practice easy and intuitive.
It is literally the same as controlling an RC anything, or a vehicle (left turn to the vehicle's left, right to the vehicle's right, reverse reverses, forward/accelerate/throttle does that thing). If one can't tank control, one can't RC.
I absolutely LOVE how at [ 15:50 ] Wesker, while threatening to shoot chris with the gun he just assumedly killed rebecca with, pleads in the absolutely most quiet, tiniest voice "chris?.... stop it..." to chris's laughter. I couldve sworn that Chris responded, "oh wesker, youve gone senile!" But maybe thats in the remake or a different version of the game, idrk.
I believe it’s a remark made if for some reason you don’t save Rebecca upon reaching the under ground lab. Then it’s just Chris and wesker dialoging in the tyrant chamber room.
Hands down the best part to the video was the clip of Jill eating a "Jill Sandwich". The rest of the video wasn't bad either, lol. Keep up the great vids Boulder Punch.
I had never played the original Resident Evil just the remake , until this past year when I got Deadly Silence for my 2ds I enjoyed it more than I thought I would I was worried it would feel like a slog but nope it was a fun time
Lol Same Story Here! Only experienced the *amazing* Remake for almost 2 decades but Last year played RE Deadly Silence fior The First time on my 3DS and it was actually kinda.... good!? 😅
My daughter played through Classic RE last year. She really enjoyed it but busted out laughing when she heard the DC basement tune. She asked me "who thought this was a good idea?" I told her the story about the guy who pretended to be deaf and that just confused her even more.
I'm 28 and that still confuses me as why they thought a man supposedly deaf would make great music and why they didn't hear a sample before deciding to put it in
@@SHADOMEGA7569 I would assume because of Beethoven being deaf and his success with composing symphonies like some sort of idiot savant 😂 maybe that was the angle they were going for, but this piece sounds like it was composed by a deaf man with a concussion 😆

Just wanted to point out that over here in the UK that ludicrous music change for the mansion basement isn't in the PAL version of RE Director's Cut. The music (thankfully) stays the same as in the original Resi. I was under the impression that that particularly infamous change of music was only featured in Resident Evil Dual Shock Edition, which wasn't released in Europe to my knowledge.
The Director's Cut version doesn't of Resdient Evil DOES NOT have the farty trumpet basement theme. You're thinking of the DUALSHOCK VERSION. It's a VERY common mistake I see people making, despite the fact that a quick google search will tell you this.
The Remake is my favourite game of all time!! I loved it so much as a kid I spent my pocket money on all the magazines that featured it and bought the Europe, American and Japanese version of the games. Never done that with any game before or since.
Hearing Chris laugh at The tyrant i always a highlight when i'm playing RE 1. There is just something about that chuckle thats so funny to me. And the way Wesker delivers the "Stop it" just makes the scene sound like 2 kids arguing and insulting each other in the play ground.
I went back and played it last year. The atmosphere in that damn mansion is still creepy af to this day. Was honestly still terrified in places when running low on ammo and health. That remake is how I hoped they were planning the re2 remake, but still happy enough with what they gave us

The game was renamed from it's original Japanese title "Biohazard" because it would be almost impossible to register the name in America. Capcom's Chris Kramer points out that both a "Crappy DOS-based game" and a New York-based Punk band were both named "Biohazard" in the US. This caused the team to have a company-wide contest to rename the game. The winner, "Resident Evil", was initially felt to be a cheesy title by most, but the name stuck because no one could think of a better title. Despite voicing the English dub, all the voice actors were not native English speakers. They were living in Japan at the time. Chris Redfield's story continues in Resident Evil 2 (via a message telling his sister about his whereabouts), Resident Evil Code Veronica, Resident Evil 5, & Resident Evil 6. Jill's story continues in Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil Revelations, & Resident Evil 5. Although the genre was not entirely new, this was the first game to use and coin the term "survival horror". Barry's story continues in Resident Evil 3 (he saves Jill in one of the endings) & in Resident Evil Revelations 2. Barry is playable in Resident Evil 5's minigame "The Mercenaries. " The canon ending can not be achieved in the game. The best ending for both scenarios have only three characters surviving (Jill, Chris, and Barry -or- Jill, Chris, and Rebecca). The characters Jill, Chris, and Barry have all appeared in at least one video game taking place after the events of the original game. Rebecca returned alongside Chris in the animated feature film Resident Evil Vendetta, which is part of the main canon. Originally supposed to be a 1st person shooter, but due to memory limitations of the PlayStation, and inspiration taken from Alone in the Dark (1992)'s fixed camera angles, the game was changed into a 3rd person game. The game's popularity caused this fixed-angle design to be carried over into the remake and sequels as well, until Resident Evil: Code: Veronica (2000). The only real difference between the original and the director's cut is the ability to choose what difficulty you want to play, and different camera angle and item places in the Advance game. The horror film Sweet Home (1989), its spin-off game Sweet Home (1989) and the game Alone in the Dark (1992) were credited by creator Shinji Mikami as the main inspirations for this first game in the Resident Evil series. Sweet Home and Alone in the Dark are both about a group of people entering a haunted mansion (albeit haunted by supernatural entities or occult monsters rather than genetically engineered abominations). Other influences that Mikami has acknowledged are Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978) and The Shining (1980).

nice review, I watch a lot of these RE1 reivews. I guess if you're not my age and didn't get this game in 1996 at age 13, you'll never have the true appreciation of it. Not having online walkthroughs, figuring out every bit by yourself. Falling in love with the characters and stories. Was actually disappointed when part 2 came out and had none of the surviving characters from this. As time and the internet(walkthroughs) went on, RE never hit that high for me again. Remake was GREAT but will never replace the original for me.
My first RE experience was RE2. I was at my uncle's house and it was in his playstation. I had a PlayStation for a few months (Christmas gift, 1997) and only had a Genesis before that, so I was blown away by RE2's graphics, sounds and gameplay. It was a good thing I had only gotten to the first locker in RE2, otherwise 2 would have completely ruined my RE1/director's cut experience. Still adore the original to this day!
Just did a review of this myself and a comparison to RE remake at the same time, and i found the game to be still a blast, 20+ years after release, and the voice acting tickles me pink. Its fantastic, and i will die on this hill. great vid, boss.
When I played Deadly Silence for the first time several years ago, it proved that no matter how great the remake it can never replace the original. Re1 is a unique experience and can't ever be replaced.
I was so addicted to this game. I had an old copy of PSN magazine where it had a full walkthrough of the game. I read it over and over and over and I was determined to make my dad buy me a PlayStation just so I could play this game. It was the first PlayStation game i ever owned and I played it to death, got so good at it i could finish it in 1 hour 20 mins..

I still have a CD on me. It is a pirated CD (like most were in Russia back then) and it has RE1 and RE2 (with like no cutscenes). I remember being amazed that the dogs will jump at you if you try to leave the mansion. So many movies and games where it never occurs to characters to try and leave, but Capcom thought about it. Though by the time I encountered Hunters I thought "why won't we go to the dogs now, they're nothing". Oh and I picked Chris for my first playthrough, so that was pain.
When the progenitor of survival horror says that saying tank controls is what makes something survival horror is embarrassing and asks people to stop tell him that…Avalanche Reviews needs to hear this lmao
0:36 Weird not mentioning Alone in the Dark, that game was the first survival horror and you can see the inspirations RE took from that game. I wouldn't be surprised if RE never existed if it wasn't for Alone in the Dark.
People didn't like to take 10 seconds to learn. Being able to navigate ever changing environments with a single button is a God-send. I don't want to wiggle a joystick in every direction every time the camera angle changes
Would love to see what you think of Them and Us! It released today on steam and I found it to be one of the best survival horror games I’ve played in a while. I played it during early access but it was essentially already finished
Hello. Nice video you've made. I jave a question to ask. Can you please make a video about resident evil survival? After all, it's the first game with first person view.
Strange i felt the original mansion was perfect and sold the guise that the mansion was just a cover up for the evils of the lab underneath. The remake actually felt like people lived there but it was too obvious. Also the dead npcs in the original i felt more sympathetic for when reading their files, i also liked the directors cut soundtrack more it felt more like sadness and dread build up where the other soundtrack was all payoff and no build up so i didnt feel the fear just confusion.
Correction, crt, plugged rf into n64s rf 😂 this way you can play resident evil then go shoot jaws in the legs with oddjob goldeneye 64 multiplayer and piss your brother off 😆
While I feel like your delivery can be a bit on the monotonous side, I really love the background info like actors and interviews with staff that you bring to the table makes these reviews so much more interesting that other channels!
Every time I've tried to do a no save run of RE1, some fucking hunter would one shot me: full health to headless in one attack. If I saved at any point, they would never do that one particular attack... but in _every single no save run_ a hunter, somewhere along the way, would take my fucking head. I've never been able to complete one. Sidenote: check out Phelan's Resident Hazard edits. They're hilarious. They're basically RE YTPs.
4:28 funny that Mikami says that but RE4 really does have tank controls, it just has a different camera system. RE5 has tank controls too. Honestly, it's pretty disappointing to hear Mikami say that about the original. Of course he views it differently from the fans but it's a brilliant game regardless.
I remember playing this on the game cube back in the day🤯 I still play this, even to this very day! A perfect yet faithful remake.... These days...well....😐🕯️
Purchased this game and a ps1 but couldn't afford a memory card but had a go anyway just to try it but then couldn't stop playing it, if you think having no ink ribbons adds to the suspense!
If they ever remake RE1 again, I hope they'll make a "cheesy/pulpy" mode unlockable after beating the game. Basically the same game, but let the voice actors have fun and make it feel like this original RE1's dialogue. Better yet, change up animations and cutscenes to make them feel like old pulpy horror action movies.
Considering how they remade RE2 (great game, bad remake) and RE3 (bad on both ends) I don't want them to touch RE1 or REmake ever again, aside from occasional ports
@@steelbear2063 funny i felt the opposite of what you said for 2 and 3 remakes 2 was bad on both ends, 3 was just a bad remake but a great game and i want them to add stuff to a remake 1 like a 3rd floor to the mansion and extra lab levels but thatd be it. Keep the rest of it the same.
I disagree ( respectfully of course) with Shinji, this control style has its perks. The fixed camera looks phenomenal and tank is just the most natural way to implement it. Forward is always forward, relative to the character
I'm a fan of the series but I've never played the original. I don't even have a problem with tank controls, but RE1's tank controls just feel terrible to me. Because I can't control the game properly, I want to play it with save states, emulated on DuckStation. The version you're playing here looks superior, but probably doesn't have save states. Is there any equivalent of save states that I could use on the version you're playing here?
OG 96 is my personal favorite, and I'm talking about the original NA release. No auto-aim, tougher enemies, less ink ribbons. IMO, that's the best way to play the original game. REmake clearly has infinitely better atmosphere but I think the tank controls in 96 are much better, even without the quick turn. Wish Capcom would make the original game available in a legit manner. It's a flawless game when it comes to gameplay, at least to me it is.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 All you have to do is run up on them each time you shoot them and then shoot them again once they stand up. The mechanics in RE 96 hold up just fine. I feel like auto aim breaks the game for RE1 & 2, almost no challenge.
@@jankmedia1985 Couldn’t agree more, the OG 96 release had the best feel to it as well as the best soundtrack imo. Also only one difficulty, survival! 😂 Wasn’t a fan of the auto aim or the music changes they made in the directors cut.
The lack of auto-aim means you have to spend a second turning around and then prepare your weapon. Why this extra hassle when i could instead aim at my target immediately who is getting close? It doesn't add any depth or challenge, it just makes the already basic combat slow and clunky. The hunters have invincibility frames when they start jumping, and they don't have any sort of telegraphing or consistent AI patterns to inform you how they're going to attack. The hunters would overall be very easy enemies to take down had it not been for the artificial invincibility. Dealing with one hunter after some practice is palatable, dealing with multiple quickly becomes a mess of missing shots and random cheapness.
Mikami is not the main director of RE1 (1996). It was Tokura Fujiwara, the producer. He wanted a remake of Sweet Home. Thus, Biohazard (Resident Evil) was born. At that time, the producer decided of "everything". Mikami said "Yes, yes, yes" to Fujiwara. Although the big problem with Shinji Mikami is his lies: he is not the creator of Resident Evil, but he was a good manager. The Mikami's Resident Evil is the remake 2002. Not 1996. Plus Resident Evil 4 (the worst scenario of the serie).
Let me tell you, you watch that clip of Mikami explaining how Resident Evil 4 now has better controls, my claims might be false, but he seems to avert his gaze a lot. These are classic 101 body language signs of someone who is either lying, or not telling the truth, or being dishonest. I looked at that clip, and nahh that does NOT look like someone who's speaking 100% truthfully.

I always found that kind of funny. They can't leave because there are dogs outside, but there's so much more dangerous stuff inside the mansion 😂
Love the Mike Patton insert lol
Just the intro of Rebecca and Chris earned you my LIKE 😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻
I still sometimes play the original on my Vita. It's a good game to have as a portable. Although, I wish I had the DS version.
When the progenitor of survival horror says that saying tank controls is what makes something survival horror is embarrassing and asks people to stop tell him that…Avalanche Reviews needs to hear this lmao
Wasn't he talking about the camera angles and not necessarily the controls ?
Art is up to many interpretations, it isn't completely limited to what the developer says.
5:30 The Director's Cut had the original soundtrack. The DualShock version had the crappy remixed soundtrack.
I’ve watched so many reviews on the RE games but yours is a step above ..
I wanted so badly to see Gelzer.
0:36 Weird not mentioning Alone in the Dark, that game was the first survival horror and you can see the inspirations RE took from that game. I wouldn't be surprised if RE never existed if it wasn't for Alone in the Dark.
I just want to say I enjoy your videos more than many others. lol them just shout and complain and fail to be funny. You have a pleasant manner
I will never stop loving the constant DSP burns.
I did nothing wrong!
@@BoulderPunch I didn't even die! The game was bugged! Uuuun-fuucking real duude!
I thought the altered soundtrack was only in the Dualshock version of the director’s cut
I’ve been playing the directors cut on ps3. So much fun looking back after playing all the more modern (4-8) titles and remakes.
Also no one loved tank controls.... They just didn't have any other option ever the shinji was embarrassed using them lol
People didn't like to take 10 seconds to learn. Being able to navigate ever changing environments with a single button is a God-send. I don't want to wiggle a joystick in every direction every time the camera angle changes
The original PS1 house is better than the Remake version. The game itself is not better, but the house and overall "quiet" atmosphere is.
Or you are just five years old.
Original resi 2 was better than remake, remake 2 was good but they were lazy with the story, veeeeeeeery lazy
amazing intro 😂 great video man keep em coming!
You talk about Resident Evil bro, you a get a like and subscribe no questions asked
You forgot the line “wHoA! this hall is dangerous!!” By Barry to jill
Would love to see what you think of Them and Us! It released today on steam and I found it to be one of the best survival horror games I’ve played in a while. I played it during early access but it was essentially already finished
I might just give the original a shot because of this video
I'll never understand what the walls are supposed to be in the underground section

Hello. Nice video you've made. I jave a question to ask. Can you please make a video about resident evil survival? After all, it's the first game with first person view.
phils* reaction to that room is so real
Strange i felt the original mansion was perfect and sold the guise that the mansion was just a cover up for the evils of the lab underneath. The remake actually felt like people lived there but it was too obvious. Also the dead npcs in the original i felt more sympathetic for when reading their files, i also liked the directors cut soundtrack more it felt more like sadness and dread build up where the other soundtrack was all payoff and no build up so i didnt feel the fear just confusion.
Hilarious how the hunter just opens and shuts the door like a proper human being
Thank you!
I love how Chris takes pepper spray to the face and is just fine 😄
Ps1 version on a crt via rf input is the only way to play
Correction, crt, plugged rf into n64s rf 😂 this way you can play resident evil then go shoot jaws in the legs with oddjob goldeneye 64 multiplayer and piss your brother off 😆
Does boulder punch have a rivalry with dsp or something? I watched another re video with boulder punch and he also mentioned dsp in that too!
There is definitely a charm to the original and it’s still worth playing. I beat it for the first time last year and had a great time
While I feel like your delivery can be a bit on the monotonous side, I really love the background info like actors and interviews with staff that you bring to the table makes these reviews so much more interesting that other channels!
Why were tank controls a part of the time? The N64 Port of RE2 has a modern movement option...it was clearly doable back then.
nice one BRUVAAA
I remember playing this on the game cube back in the day🤯
I still play this, even to this very day!
A perfect yet faithful remake....
These days...well....😐🕯️
Purchased this game and a ps1 but couldn't afford a memory card but had a go anyway just to try it but then couldn't stop playing it, if you think having no ink ribbons adds to the suspense!
Outstanding video absolutely awesome!😎👍
Personally i think the DS version is the best way to play RE1, aside from the PC sourcenext ver. With classic rebirth patched in
That version is obviously the absolute best way to play the first 3
I first beat the original on the DS this is where it all started what a game.
LOOK AT THOSE MOONNNSTERSSSSSS
- Basketball prodigy Rebecca Chambers, 1996
I occasionally revisit both re96 and remake, I found it odd that enjoy both almost equally
Jill eating a sandwich at the end was the best
Great video. I really enjoyed this. 👍
Love avalanche reviews!!great vid
"The series would eventually go to first person, over twenty years later with RE7-"
*cough* Survivor *cough*
I disagree ( respectfully of course) with Shinji, this control style has its perks. The fixed camera looks phenomenal and tank is just the most natural way to implement it. Forward is always forward, relative to the character
8:50, LMAO. I knew the gas was gonna come out on the second one. Game wasn't bugged, just didn't have the grate completely covered.
Yeah they’re called ink ribbons and you use them in type writers 😂
@@Xcalibur2679 The equivalent of save states is quicksaving, not ink ribbons.
@@naryanr yeah I know 🤦♂️ 😂
@@Xcalibur2679 I'm in my 30s. I just find the original RE1 kind of painful to play, but I still want to get at least some of the experience.
@@naryanr you have an snes mini classic? Or a ps1 classic?
OG 96 is my personal favorite, and I'm talking about the original NA release. No auto-aim, tougher enemies, less ink ribbons. IMO, that's the best way to play the original game. REmake clearly has infinitely better atmosphere but I think the tank controls in 96 are much better, even without the quick turn. Wish Capcom would make the original game available in a legit manner. It's a flawless game when it comes to gameplay, at least to me it is.
Yeahhhhhh....no thanks. No auto aim mixed with the cheap hunters is not fun. It's clunky and tedious.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 All you have to do is run up on them each time you shoot them and then shoot them again once they stand up. The mechanics in RE 96 hold up just fine. I feel like auto aim breaks the game for RE1 & 2, almost no challenge.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 auto run, auto Aim, auto beat the game button 😂 what exactly does your other hand do when you play video games 🤔
He's Japanese and also likely an introvert in front of the camera. It's difficult to tell.
2:32 You don't need to go that far, there's Survivor 😆
