    It's crazy how Mikami and his team were responsible for both the greatest third person shooter of all time (OG RE4), and the greatest survival horror game and remake of all time (RE1 remake). Two games with very different design philosophies and yet they both nail everything they set out to do. Capcom Production Studio 4 should have been kept together no matter the costs and every single piece of DNA from those individuals preserved and saved as mankind patrimony. Even the guy that cleaned toilets there must have been some kind of genius.

    RE1 Remake really is the best example of keeping the vision and soul of the original while adding new things in the best and most unintrusive way possible. I just wish more of the casual younger gamers were willing to give it a chance.

    • @desfefe
      @desfefe 20 дней назад +9

      A lot of them did tbf, which is why Capcom went on to see if there was a point to remake 2. With the remakes though, you can tell what they did was make a game that would sell the most. TBF I miss that era of adventure games (be it survival horror or not) with the fixed camera angles. We might see it again in a few indie projects, but man, wish a big studio did a project like this for once.

    • @CommanderRedEXE
      @CommanderRedEXE 20 дней назад +15

      @@desfefe And most of them are crying for a remake of RE1 utilizing OTS not Fixed camera.
      Just goes to show they "tried" it, somehow couldn't grasp tank controls and Fixed camera, and thought it sucked. Sadly a sentiment most younger RE fans seems to mindlessly parrot despite indie games having proven it can be done in modern times easily.

    • @desfefe
      @desfefe 20 дней назад +1

      @@CommanderRedEXE
      I mean it wasnt necessarily from those who enjoyed remake enough for remake 2 to come. But of course making a game for mainstream means a few new fans will be made.
      I dont necessarily hate them for it, I mean in the end their own opinions. But if reremake comes out I will refuse to acknowledge or play it because remake was perfect the way it was. And I do not see a point for it. A new RE game with a similar setting than re 1? Sure why not. Clearly capcom have no ideas left at this point and they are hoping to live off the nostalgia bandwagon.

    • @CommanderRedEXE
      @CommanderRedEXE 20 дней назад +8

      @desfefe What's worse is many of the new fans thinks RE1R was just a remaster because remake isn't in the name anywhere, which is mainly Capcom's fault.
      But even then, most arguments I do see for why it needs a new remake basically just boil down to "it needs to be OTS, fixed camera is unplayable".
      Most of the time they fully admit they won't even try RE1R because they automatically deem the controls and camera to be unplayable.
      I don't hate the fans, rather the poor arguments they tend to give. Hopefully this clears things up a bit.

      It's such an easy win for graphics. When the background is just an image (or an animation) with some shadows overlaid ontop, you free up processing power for higher framerate (performance) and higher fidelity character models! RE Remake (and RE Zero) were punching way above their weight in terms of character rendering, to the point that you had character models with 7th-gen (and beyond) quality on a 6th-gen machine. Just compare another beautiful 6th-gen game like MGS3 with those two Residen Evil games - it's actually difficult to believe both of those were from the same generation of machines!

    Both games have some very serious flaws in them that could use a second try to smooth them over. Remaking the good ones doesn't do anything for me. That'd be a waste of time.
      The plot, premise, setting, mechanics and characters of those games (specially CV) are absolutely forgettable. There's no point trying to "fix/polish" every mediocre game just cuz they could be better now. A remake should be reserved for games brimming with potential and not just anything that could be improved. You would need to change so much to make them as interesting as the great RE games that you might as well just make a brand new games with a few of the ideas those had.

    • @CommanderRedEXE
      @CommanderRedEXE 20 дней назад +2

      @FrMZTsarmiral You're being far too harsh. Steve had a decent arc but terrible voice acting. Same for the Ashfords. We know this because Darkside Chronciles did both justice.
      Billy Coen likewise, was given better writing in Umbrella Chronicles that fixed most of the issues most had.
      A remake of those two are the best possible choices as 1 already got a remake, 5 and 6 don't really need one, though 5 I could argue either way. Revelations 1 and 2 could use them but that's even less likely than an RE1 Re-Remake.

    Thanks for this wonderful video. I only played Dino Crisis, Fatal Frame 2 and Kuon back then for "classic survival horror games." I have played other RE games (OG RE4 being my first), but it was only this year when I got into the classic fixed-camera Resident Evil games. This game was my first pick. I struggled a lot despite playing as Jill on Very Easy due to the inventory management. I managed to clear it, but it wasn't until this October 2024 when I finally got into the proper mindset, and I saw myself clearing this game FIVE more times in TWO weeks, working my way from Very Easy, Easy, then Normal for Jill and Chris.
    In those two weeks I also managed to clear the OG RE1 for both Jill and Chris, which was pretty easy considering I already have a knowledge of the routing thanks to the remake. But as you said, OG RE1 has its own charm.
    With that said, I'm happy and proud to say that RE1 HD Remaster is what properly got me into the classic style of Resident Evil games. I've come to love this game so much that a part of the Dino Crisis fanboy in me wishes that a Dino Crisis remake would be more like RE1 Remake instead of the more popular over-the-shoulder camera. And yes, Julia Voth is my favorite Jill Valentine. Regina from Dino Crisis however, is still my main squeeze.
    Again, thanks for making such a wonderful video!

    The art direction if re1 remake is what sold me the game, i could stand still and admire the environment for hours. It's also one of the funnest game to speedrun or challenge run (knife only, no save). And for me, dodging zombies is more fun than trying to kill everything, it takes more skill to run past enemies with classic control than attacking. Dodging requires just the right amount of skill that isn't too hard or too easy like staggering zombies in re2make which broke the game. Hope one day, Capcom will make a new horror game with fix camera.

    Even though I've heard and agreed with this same argument before the sad reality is that most of the younger gamers as well as the casual gamers aren't into the old survival horror mechanics. The majority of people I've asked about this subject who don't have nostalgia for these games hate tank controllers & fix camera angles. They have told me it's what kept them away from the originals despite the availability of many of these old survival horror games. The sad reality is the RE2 remake is the closest thing to a compromise we can hope for when it comes to AAA games given their large budgets. Indie games really do hold the future for survival horror but I'm honestly surprised we haven't gotten good AA survival horror games yet. The only one I can think of are the Daymare games and I'm not entirely sure those are AA nor do I know if they sold well.

      They're also usually hippocrites though. Tormented Souls proved without a doubt their main argument for both, "outdated" is a moot argument that holds no weight.
      And since that's the only argument most make, we can simply use that game, which is infinitely scarier than RE4R or SH2R, as proof they can't handle real horror.
      Can you tell I'm tired of bad faith arguments against fixed camera and tank controls?

    • @dangtiendung4766
      @dangtiendung4766 20 дней назад +1

      @@CommanderRedEXE idk, as a diehard classic RE expert (I have beaten real survivor mode with knife only, no save with classic control), Tormented Souls wasn't that good in terms of level design and gameplay. That game nailed the visuals for sure, but it doesn't have the re1make secret sauce. I don't remember anything about the game other than the first wheelchair jump scare, the shitty final boss, and 0 memorable characters, music, puzzles, enemies etc. Signalis has the great story, but gameplay and level design are meh. It could just be my expectation being too high; it could just be that Re1make is the best game ever and no one else could ever top it. Most of the indie survival horror games feels amateurish at best, which is not their fault with limited budget and lack of experience.

    • @CommanderRedEXE
      @CommanderRedEXE 20 дней назад +1

      @dangtiendung4766 Definitely a case of holding RE1R on a pedestal. While I agree it's the peak of survival horror, Tormented Souls is still the closest we've ever gotten to it again.
      Signalis is in it's own category as there's simply nothing truly comparable to it, but that's not a bad thing either.
      I agree that the indie games are amateurish. I can only imagine what it would have been like had Tormented had a AAA budget. But we'll likely never truly know as no AAA would dare touch fixed camera angles unfortunately.

    To this day, I curse the Nintendo deal Capcom had with this and RE0 at the time. Yes, it made these games look visually superior than they would have had they been on PS2. However, due to the weak sales of these titles at the time, we never got RE2 and RE3 done in the same fashion. It wasn't until early 2015 that RE1R was remastered on multiple platforms that more people were able to play it and I'm sure the sales far exceeded the GameCube version. The remakes we ended up getting for RE2 and RE3 are great games but terrible remakes. I personally don't think RE1R will ever be dethroned as the best RE remake unless by some miracle they bring back Mikami.

      Agreed. The Uncharted-style OTS view has become generic and boring. It's also veeery restrictive when it comes to the game-design and especially in-game cinematography.
      With the classic, cinematic camera-angles, the devs can guide the players and conceal data from them as they please. They can build amazing atmosphere by changing the perspective, doing things like making it seem like something's preying you outside the playable area, or by taking the camera far back to portray the scale of your surroundings...and your puny existence within it.

    It was in late 2001, when I picked up the latest issue of the Computer and Videogames magazine. On the cover, a goofy yet grotesque picture of a zombie man. Headlines gushing about this brand new, upcoming Resident Evil game. Six pages of preview for the REmake. Every picture seemed way too real to be from a video game. Double so from a Nintendo title, seeing how they'd been sort of an underdog for a while now. The jump in quality was INSANE, and the game still holds up extremely well. Not that the OG RE1-3 would be in any way bad to this day, but I know the visuals alone filter some more... superficial folks. To this day, REmake 1 remains as THE blueprint of how to rebuild a classic "retro" game in a loving, masterful way; it was truly a love letter, and a new challenge, from the Mikami's OG team, to the OG RE-fans. It did not REPLACE the OG RE1, but rather used it as a springboard. If you skip the original game, or rather the OG trilogy, you will miss some delicious mind games the devs play on you, and the obvious "WHOA!" effect.

Sadly, the sales figures back then (not helped with the Gamecube exclusivity) were showing that classic RE was long overdue for a clean slate, but we all know what happened after 2005. Good on Capcom for taking it out of Nintendo's umbrella and exposing more people to its greatness, which im sure evolved into the remake-mania we are so used to see nowadays.

    my only 2 issues with this game 1. I wish they went and added a way to get the canon ending. It could be something as simple as unlocking an electronic lock which allows the character like Barry or REbecca, whoever isn't in the campaign you're playing to get through and then when you make it to the helepad you find them unconcious but alive. No extra dialogue needed. And 2 I wish there was more color as this came out in the age of gray and brown. Otherwise the game is fantastic. Shame the modern remake scouldn't learn to keep more from their originals' counterparts like this one did. And yeah I know this was released at a different time. But my statement is still true.

The way that it that it makes you unsettled through out the whole game, the still air and silence of the mansion, where only your footsteps could be heard has you on edge for what’s to come, making every sound not coming from you even more disturbing and fearful of the shuffling walks and moans of the undead just outside of the camera angle your character is sitting in. This game is a masterpiece and I can go on but I think this is a long enough excerpt.
