RE0 was the first RE game I ever played as a child and was instrumental in developing my love for the series. I think that the story is as cheesy as any of the other stories, but not any worse, and the graphical overhaul made the suspension of disbelief a little harder for the player. I love the game to this day and even replayed it at the beginning of this year along with RE1 and found myself enjoying it far more than the latter game when played back to back from each other. The bosses leave a lot to be desired but the atmosphere is so much more tense in my eyes because of the two character gameplay. There are times when you feel safe and secure because you have both characters together and a full armament, just to have one of them start tanking hits and become close to death, then you have to carefully navigate to either a saved healing item, or hope to find a new one somewhere else. Or, when you get to a point where the characters have to separate, you immediately feel disadvantaged by being alone with no backup suddenly. I'm not saying it's a perfect game, but I feel like it is severely underrated by the majority of the fanbase because it didn't have series favorites in it, and the leeches were a one off enemy. I think the game gets delegated to spin-off status instead of mainline entry by a lot of people because of this and because of it's mostly self contained storyline, which makes sense but also tends to make most people forget about it when talking about the series as a whole. I don't want to write a huge review of the game in this comment section so I'll stop with this final sentiment: I don't think that it tried to "fix" nonexistent issues, I think it attempted to shake up gameplay without completely revolutionizing the series like RE4 eventually did and failed because it sat in limbo between being fresh and new, and being the same old RE game with better graphics which could appeal to different sections of the fanbase in different ways.
Also at 10:28 you mention that Rebecca is the only one that can make use of the hookshot... This is not the case. I believe the weight limit that it is said to have in the manual when you pick it up is why you may have thought that, but that's the lore reason as to why it can't carry both of them at the same time, but it can be used by Billy as well. This adds a bit of player agency and can make some points (I'm mostly thinking about the church/lab area) a little more or less tedious based on that decision.

The writing in RE0 really is what kills this game, hookshot not withstanding. You've got a villain who is basically what Spencer was going for with his ubermensch genetic chicanery. Marcus ended up an immortal super being transformed by the virus, but they chalked his motivation up to wanting the world to burn "in an inferno of hate", only to then have him inexplicably transform in to a giant leech boss because we needed a big bad boss fight for the ending.

Also as far as his impact on grander story : marcus deserves the title of overarching series villain more than spencer, wesker and esp miranda;cause of tht guy,all of umbrellas viral research exists today plaguing the world, and hes the only villain who actually accomplished his goal which is revenge on umbrella, and world bein in constant turmoil and almost ending a few times, and to top it all off,if it werent for marcus, project W and project veronica woulda never come to fruition, since without him creating the 1st successful T virus base, none of this woulda happened

I honestly HOPE they remake this. RE0 is one of the weaker games in the series. I loved it at first, but now that I look back at it, I realize that it was indeed very flawed. I want to see the ENTIRE Bravo Team play a big role in a RE0 Remake, not just Rebecca, and Billy Coen (A character who appeared once, and then just disappeared for the rest of the series). And Wesker being the main antagonist makes a lot more sense. James Marcus was certainly an interesting character, but I do think he was just a little too fantastical for the series. I mean, control leeches with OPERA SINGING???? That is stretching it a little bit. I also think that the enemy roster was seriously lacking, with most of the bosses just being a giant version of a normal creature. Resident Evil 0 could've been so much more, and I really hope they do a remake that does much better justice to the series.

Regarding how James Marcus fits into the darker tone or lack thereof, along with RE0’s lack of connections to RE1/RE2/RE3, I actually thought of how Marcus could have been retooled to partially address this. I am copying and pasting my idea below, if you would like to read it…
After I thought about this for a while, my biggest issue with his backstory/abilities was how his Queen Leech inexplicably absorbed his memories and duplicated his personality. Through RE3: Nemesis and RE1 Remake (regarding Lisa Trevor), the classic Resident Evil games already introduced the Nemesis Alpha parasite, a monster whose special ability was to act as a secondary/replacement brain for Umbrella’s T-Virus monsters. So I thought it was a mistake for RE0 to not just have James Marcus use one of those parasites to preserve his own consciousness, rather than inventing an entirely different monster randomly possessing that same ability, for seemingly no reason.
What I propose is that James Marcus’ backstory should involve him experimenting on himself with the NE-Alpha parasite, right before Spencer orders his assassination. After the assassination attempt, Umbrella’s higher-ups intend to use his corpse as another test subject for the T-Virus, not knowing that the parasite has duplicated his mind and will preserve it throughout the whole process of zombification. Retaining his human intelligence/memories and possessing the added abilities of the parasite, the zombie James Marcus outwits his captors, breaks out of confinement, and then leaks the T-Virus to get revenge on Umbrella. This can be the specific incident, which later inspires Umbrella to try merging the parasites with a Tyrant to create RE3’s Nemesis.
Regarding the Mimicry Marcus leeches, I actually enjoyed those enemies a lot, even if I did not particularly like the Queen Leech. Therefore, I think the leeches could still be in the game, albeit as another one of Marcus’ beloved “pets” which he indirectly controls. The final boss battle could have Marcus behaving like a hybrid of the Pale Head zombies in new RE2/RE3, Lisa Trevor, Alex Wesker’s malformed state in RE Revelations 2, and Nemesis’ final form in original RE3, with some leeches helping him out too. Regarding the use of opera music, James Marcus could just play some opera songs on a turntable and/or broadcast it on the facility’s speakers for his own amusement.

I think that after the train section, the game just isn’t as fun as it could be, it becomes this tangle of having to remember where you put items + uninspired bosses + trying to make it without getting killed. I should try it again and have some fun with it, but then remembering al the things I have to go through with this game just makes me less excited about that idea. Great video btw!!

The Gamecube had some absolutely amazing load times, considering the amount of data being streamed. From what I remember back when it was still "Dolphin", apparently Miyamoto himself said he wouldn't be satisfied switching to a disc system unless the load times could be seamless in his upcoming games. Part of how they managed this also ended up one of the weaknesses of the system. Those funny half sized discs that don't have near the capacity of an XBox or PS2 DVD? That's part of the secret. Their small physical size meant the laser had less distance to travel to reach any particular track. The other trick involved dev kits that included many tools for optimizing where data was physically placed on the disc to better allow developers to make sure similar data was stored in physically close areas. Of course, that last bit does require developers to keep that in mind, so Capcom still did an amazing job here.

"Uninspired" is right. I was fine with the RE0 enemy types, the dropping items, and even Billy... but the plot is stupid even for an RE game (I do not believe that this happened before RE, that Rebecca fled to the mansion and just sat there HELPLESSLY after a huge adventure), and the whole thing felt superfluous. I wouldn't rank it below RE6 though.

This is an assessment error. Rebecca is not a fighter. She never has been - just look at the animated film Vendetta. Who fights in the game's cinematics? Billy. You have to separate the cinematics (canon) and the gameplay: how you play (non-canon).
When you look at it that way, it makes sense.

An excellent review of this game, thank you for putting in the time to provide us with it. I have seen quite a few already, but most usually agree on the same points, such as the flawed system concerning the ability to drop items. I can only agree - this title was my first Resident Evil game, and it was such a chore to try and take everything with you. Indeed, the main hall served as my storage location as well, and on subsequent sessions I would always dread that moment of having to turn both characters into pack mules in order to carry every bloody item from there to the lab - and then from there to the underground facility. Must I mention that on the GameCube it was necessary to change the disk whenever going to the lab? As you mentioned, that hook shot is such a pain - just a (mostly) useless burden you need to keep around, as well as the only item in the whole game (ignoring weapons) that needs to travel that much. And once you are finally able to discard the damn thing, it does not even feel that relieving because you still need to carry that arsenal and such around, made worse by the section where Rebecca ends up on her own again after Billy falls. Honestly, I really love this game, mainly because I grew up with it; however, that inventory management has got to be one of the worst executions of an idea in the history of ever. I would come back to Resident Evil Zero far more often if it was not for all this nonsense.
Anyway, like I initially said, a lovely review - have a good day ♥

Honestly what bothers me the most about RE Zero is that it although it was good it had the potential to be GREAT, my original thought was that the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team was going to play a bigger role in the story which was one of my primary reasons for me buying this game, i was hoping to see the game chronicle their battles/struggles throughout the night of July 23rd after the helicopter crash up until their arrival at The Spencer Mansion/Compound on July 24th, and i was sorely disappointed on that end, however i was happy to FINALLY learn what actually caused the T-Virus outbreak at the Spencer Estate, what actually happened to S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team Pilot Edward Dewey and i loved the Wesker/Birkin cameos as well, also i wished that this game was better connected to RE1 Remake, it would've been nice to see some of RE Zero 's lore in that game such as Rebecca telling Chris about Edward's fate, Dr.Marcus, the Umbrella Management Training Facility etc.

It was a roller coaster for me with this game. My first playthrough was on hard difficulty. It started very nice and almost smooth with the train section, but I knew it was just an introduction before the main event will start. When I came to mansion I still thought everything is good until I met my first Leech Marcus. It was quiet a downhill from there as I've constantly tried to survive with almost no ammo or healing items. I've stuck on Centipede as I barely had ammo to deal with it, knifing it to death. After that thigs started to pick up a little until monkeys entered the scene. Barely surviving them I came to the Bat boss. It was another hard boss for me as I had very little ammo to deal with it as well. Somehow I've managed to kill it. From this point things started to click for me. It became easier to manage both characters and items, dealing with Leeches and other bosses. With Tyrant I misread achievement section and thought I need to knife it to death, so I conserved ammo both times only to learn that there is no achievement here. Really it was a smooth experience as I've conserver an excessive amount of ammo and healing items the even the final boss wasn't much of a challenge.
Mechanics with dropping items anywhere was the best feature for me to the point that it's kinda hard for me to play other classic RE titles without it. Storage boxes are nice, but it takes time to get to them just to drop one item, so you can go back and pick one item that you might need to drop in the box as well (I recalling my first playthrough of original Resident Evil). Maybe being able to have both drop mechanics and separate boxes could add some value, but I honestly can't see it. It's not hard to look at the map to see where and what items you dropped. Things like hookshot wasn't much trouble for me either as in general you don't need run very far to get all your dropped stuff, especially if you take time to move everything from main hall to lab. Two space items was a trouble, but manageable.
In terms of inconsistencies with Rebecca, I blame REmake team not taking into account what was already started on N64. It's actually even more jarring as REmake didn't really tried to fix the original's plot. It annoys me that by choosing Jill, Rebecca simply doesn't exist in here scenario. And the worst thing is playing as Chris is just as dull as in original since Rebecca didn't do much in his scenario. I remember watching some video on RE0 development history that it was already considered even before RE1 was released. They had a lot of scrapped ideas, so I thought that they didn't have much time to do everything they want. Maybe with REmake they didn't want to spoil RE0 stuff with Rebecca, so they decided to not change anything and roll with it.
For Billy character I can say only one thing: if the character doesn't annoy me, I have no problems. Yeah, we don't know much about the guy and he's kinda there for the most part... just like Rebecca really. I actually think this is a Billy game with Rebecca parts attached to it. I may be wrong about this, but that's how I see it.
In conclusion my initial thought was it's going to be like Code Veronica because of opera stuff and slow-mo in early cut-scenes, so I was already ranked it below any classic RE games on my list, making it on par with CV. Through mid game it was at the bottom of my list on par with RE6, it was just bad. Past the middle when it's all started to click with me and I've learned to deal with the game it came on top of my list quiet fast. Doesn't really matter really as I think it's a good game with flaws.

I was really excited when pictures and commercials started popping up for RE0. It wasn't until 2009 that I got to play it, and REmake, because I had a Wii. I played REmake and feel in love with it, then put RE0 into the console, full of excitement.... And lost interest when the characters first got split up. It was such a different feel then what RE had always been.
It wasn't until 2010 that I picked up the controller to give it another go, and I was shocked to find that I actually really liked the game. Once I figured out the co-op single player deal, I found it really cool. No item boxes required real strategy to be used, and was very realistic. No magical item boxes if this happened in real life!
Billy isn't my favorite part, and perhaps the game could have been better if it was Rebecca and, say, Rodrigo. The opera singing Marcus felt weird, and I could have done without it, and I think that hurt it the most; gave me Code Veronica flashbacks.
The biggest issue I have, and it was pointed out, was the lack of Rebecca's character continuity from Zero to REmake. She should have been a badass in REmake so it helped to tie Zero in better. Even without weapons, she could have been doing something to avoid/injure the hunter, allowing Chris the time to kill it, rather then curl up in a ball ready to die. After Chris dispatched the Hunter he could have asked, "are you hurt?", and Rebecca could have given her signature thumbs up and replied, "that was nothing, you should have been around last night!" Perfect foreshadowing for Zero's future release. An opportunity not taken that really does hurt the franchise.

I love this game back when it came out, but I was a teenager who was fresh into really discovering my love and addiction to the franchise
I replayed this game some years back on the GameCube though and found it to be painfully average.
The character swapping for puzzles became more annoying than innovative
The level design was fine, but not very inspired or unique past the train
The enemies were all pretty bland (so many giant bugs and animals)
And the lack of item boxes/dropping items is aggravating.
For the promise of answering questions in the series too, it really just raised more. It tiptoes a bit into silly anime territory with the leeches under command of a song
BUT.... Despite all that it isn't bad. It's just.... Fine... Ok... Average
I think for a while it still managed to be one of the better titles in the series. But since its release so many more much higher quality entries are now available to play or replay.
I'll always keep my original copy. But I can't see myself really ever wanting to replay it.
Maybe someday I'll start with it on a marathon of playing the 3 remakes, if only because it's so close to the first remake in gameplay.
The best thing this game manages to hold up with is the visuals though. It was and still is gorgeous.

I always imagined the cause of the outbreak being the cause of corporate intrigue, conspiracy and ruthless psychopaths in business suits. This was when I was fifteen. I certainly didn’t expect an opera singing leach man.
Yeah you got a bit of what I mentioned with Wesker and Birkin betraying said leach man, but what this game did was the worst thing a prequel can do; make the world feel smaller.

I wish we got the RE0 original game and RE1.5 maybe. Just out of curiousity.
And I do dig the RE0 we have now, but it did need some slight alterations with some things that bother me slightly. I feel that RE0 is kinda anime if you know what I mean. But in all cases, its still a pretty solid game with a flawed story.

Great video. These are the pros and cons of re0 that I found:
    Cons:
-Environments are too much like re1 rmk.
-No storage wasn't a good idea.
-Story didn't expand on anything in the RE universe.
    Pros:
    -Billy is awesome.
    -Great ambiance music.
-Some of the environments they featured that differ from re1 rmk were really nice.

Even back in 2002 when I was 14, zero was lackluster and I knew it. Never bothered finishing it. It was a chore to play and the formula was played out by that time. Less than a year prior we got the re 1 remake and it was amazing. Zero was a let down

How in the hell isn’t Rebecca infected with the t-virus since she got bit and scratched by two different eliminators that drew blood in cutscenes? Guess ouroboros wouldn’t have infected her.

Because the writers actually cared about ludonarrative resonance. The immunity of the protagonists to the T-Virus is showcased in gameplay by the lack of an infection mechanic.

Most of the issues with RE0 I can forgive as quirks and experimenting. I am okay with the character gimmicks.
The lack of item boxes drives me absolutely insane. Honestly if they just added item boxes I'd actually have it as a cult favorite.
    Wesker mode is amazing though.

It’s interesting how polarising a topic can be. Personally, it’s my favourite Resident Evil Game, all the ‘frustrating’ gameplay is in my opinion very fun. It checks every box I’d could think of and it’s interesting to see how many dislike the game more than people like it.

18:03, to be fair to them for the teasing, the plan was initially to remake both re2 and re3 in the style of REmake as well. Thus this was possibly less a tease, and was instead a little sneak preview of what REmake 2 would be.
Sadly this never happened, and the REmake 2 we got years later was in a very different style to the original and REmake (though REmake 2 being so fantastic softens that disappointment a lot) but at the time it was never meant to be a tease.

  • @RetroGeek94

I'm in the minority that really liked this game. It's not as good as RE1 remake, but I did like Billy as a character a lot, I even liked the enemy variety, train and training facility section. The only thing that put me off is the fact 0 has no item box. Dropping all your items on the floor felt like a slog having to constantly backtrack to pick everything up where you left it. Besides that, the game is still pretty good, just not a masterpiece.

    • @Inblader
      @Inblader 3 месяца назад +1

Same. Halfway through the game I was like "I'll definitely won't do another run" but after finishing it I might, it's far from being perfect but I enjoyed Billy and Rebecca (eventhough it's not consistent with her character from RE1 ).
The items management system isn't as bad as I thought and actually makes the experience much more enjoyable, considering you control 2 characters and can drop items whenever you want but sadly the game abuses its own mechanic by making you backtrack, because it knows too well you left that hookshot at the start of the map!
I'll miss the dropping items mechanic but that's about it when it comes to RE0, I also feel the last part is too long. Good classic RE with flaws.

    • @RetroGeek94
      @RetroGeek94 3 месяца назад

@Inblader I agree, I hated the item drop mechanic at first, but as I got further into the game, I came to appreciate it for what it is, despite it being a little tedious at times. Another thing I think RE 0 did very well was they have some of the best puzzles in the series, which I liked. I like the bug type creature variety in the game. Thought it was cool getting to fight a giant scorpion and the centipede. The save room music is really good too. So yeah, despite the game having its flaws with the item drop idea, it does have a lot of pros as well as cons. Anyone who says RE 0 is the worst in the series obviously has never played Umberella corps or operation racoon city lol. Which didn't feel like survival horror at all.

To be fair to Chris, I’m reasonably sure that the ability to read and play piano sheet music wasn’t on the list of requirements to be considered for S.T.A.R.S. recruitment.
That being said, given how messed up the Raccoon City Police Department’s leadership was in retrospect, what with Chief Irons being a complete psychopath and Wesker secretly being an Umbrella Corporation operative, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they didn’t include something as esoteric as this on the entrance exams purely for the heck of it.

I always thought what this game should have done, was have Billy and Rebecca never be together. Here's my pitch. Billy is able to hail Rebecca on her radio using one he stole from the MPs, and from there the two can communicate back and forth. They're in entirely different areas and need to help each other progress, but they'll never visit each other's areas. For example, the power is out in Billy's area but the breaker panel is in Rebecca's area. Or a computer terminal in Rebecca's area needs a password which can be found in a note found in Billy's area. And then there's some way to transfer small items to one another, like in this game the storage box is an array of those vacuum tubes they used to use to transfer canisters with notes in them so the characters can exchange items or dip into each other's storage space. Then finally have it where doing things as one character could have consequences for the other. Perhaps Billy can drain the water in a room he's in to reach a cache of ammo but this will flood a room in Rebecca's area and block her from reaching some ammo, or Rebecca can close some shutters to keep enemies out which then end up going to Billy's area instead. Then, finally, you can switch between who you control whenever you want, and they don't actually meet each other until the very final battle where one has to keep the boss busy while the other runs around opening the roof to let sunlight in. Think like Resident Evil 2's A and B scenario, but you're playing them both at the same time.

I found with zero that the further i got into the game the more it started to downgrade in quality including the stunning pre-rendered backgrounds were starting to look un-finished and not to the standard of the start of the game. Its almost like they were running out of time during production and kinda got pushed to rush it. This game was just not needed. Billy's tattoo says "Mother Love" its a reference to a Queen song as is the reference on Claire's jacket in RE2 says "Made in Heaven" and her jacket in Code Veronica says " Let Me Live" some random RE trivia some fans may or may not know.
