I have over 120hrs on this game and i was blown away how much content this game has for an indie game. I love darksouls games, but i would sometimes cheese my way through victory on those games but still having a level of skill completing the game but what Blasphemous does is that it gives you no advantage and puts you against a tough but fair boss where your only option is to understand your opponents moveset and beat it. like in some boss fights i spent over 10 mins parrying and punishing certain moves they did until finally killing it after many attempts and the amount of dopamine you get from killing that tough boss is so rewarding. probs the best indie game ive ever played. Plus finding the berserk reference in my blind playthrough made the game 10x better xD
Especially after they added dlc into the main game. I got the plat and still haven't done a full dlc run. Close to 100 hours and still have wounds of eventide. And yeah the combat is so underrated. It's just as good as souls. If not better. Boss fights are so we'll designed and balanced.

You’re going down the road I’m trying to 😂. Have always told myself I hate these “challenging backtracking” games. Well I’m old and trying new things. Playing Ender Lillies and Vigil Longest Night and loving both. (Mostly 😂)
Currently about 90% through Hollow Knight and I liked Blasphemous a lot more. YMMV based on what you happened to find and when, but I thought the pacing in Hollow Knight was really poor. I got stuck and needed walkthroughs for multiple pieces of the game (because I happened to miss key items/areas, especially in regions I had no map for, and because the game doesn't teach you about the pogo jumping ability unlike literally every other ability in the game). Even in the mid game map traversal takes way too long to the point where it feels like a chore. I ended up slogging through the arena in the mid game before many key upgrades came in because that was more appealing than going elsewhere and spending like 20 minutes backtracking to the arena later. The geo economy is busted too - currently have like 25k and nothing to spend it on. Haven't been farming either; just been playing normally and not dying twice. Hollow Knight feels like it's building up to a big plot reveal at the end, which isn't dissimilar from Blasphemous, but Blasphemous I felt curious and engaged in the plot from the beginning while Hollow Knight seems to be asking me to trust it to have told a good story by the end. Both games have great soundtracks and atmosphere but Blasphemous clicked with me more. Hollow Knight has that same melancholy that lots of Metroidvanias have, which I like, but Blasphemous has that *and* is metal af.
Blasphemous is one of those games that speaks to you on a different level. You never get tired looking at it, thing is beautiful in a macabre kind of way. Yes, the parrying is so satisfying. I did one run of it. It really challenged me, well I nearly threw the towel in on that final boss. He was a doozy. Haven't played the DLC for it yet must get round to that. Congrats on the platinum, tough going.
I bought SOTN on release for the PS1 back when I was 19. It has been my favorite in the 2D Metroidvania genre ever since. I very recently (last week) got back into Blasphemous after playing the second game. I had only played the Stir of Dawn DLC and wanted to play the Wounds of Eventide DLC. Over the weekend I came to the conclusion that Blasphemous is now my favorite Metroidvania game. I absolutely love it
You’ve definitely reminded me that I really ought to buy this game. I’ve only played the demo, but I totally agree with you on the combat. It’s better than any other combat in any other Metroidvania I’ve ever played. Closest combat to this I’ve seen experienced is Sundered, and even that’s not as tight as Blasphemous
hollow knight also has great combat btw castlevania has great combat and options. the problem is that it doesn't has bosses which challenge your knowledge of combat and test you how you use your abilities properly.
Just finished the game and yep, my favorite metroidvania ever and I've played pretty much of all them lol. Hollow Knight used to be my favorite, but Blasphemous took that spot now
I would do anything for Blasphemous. It’s my favorite game to come out in the last 5 years. I’m a little over halfway through 2 right now, and I’m trying to cherish it before it’s over. The approach they take to the second one I feel is equally opposite to the first one. The first games lore and world building are top notch. The second games lore is good so far, but the first half of the game felt more…reserved? They trade that for improvements to the already amazing combat by expanding your arsenal of weapons, abilities, and prayers. I miss having the mid-air attack-to-jump chain thing they did in 1, but you get a mid-air dash later to compensate. I’m hoping we get a third game, or maybe even a short series or something akin to the comic they made titled “The Kneeling”, which is a prequel/prologue to B1. The art style for the series is what really sells everything for me…and the approach to storytelling is smart AF. They don’t force you to understand what’s going on. Instead, they allow you to play the game as you like…while alluding to the deeper mysteries through the item descriptions and alternate endings…making you WANT to go back and figure out just what the heck is going on, but only after getting you addicted to the combat. I’m gonna shut up now, or I might go on forever. PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME IF YOU LIKE GOOD THINGS
I played the original version when it first came out and loved it - did both endings at the time but haven't touched the DLCs yet. @@Chrisjb1983 Plenty of people have good personality's. But they don't have the skills needed to create. You can't have sub par sound, editing, ideas, etc and get consistent views. Just sit in front of your cell phone talking about games with no thumbnails, no editing, no personal touches like adding your own music that you created, and see how far you get. This is my 4th RUclips channel. I've tried alot of different things. It's about working the RUclips algorithm and checking all the necessary boxes. Quality videos being one of them.
it's good and addictive but let's not exaggerate. the world design/layout is one of the major things holding this back from being even a top 10 metroidvania, as well as some other issues. it doesn't remotely hold a candle to symphony of the night. even for recent games, i'd put it well below bloodstained. the pixel art in the game and cutscenes is beautiful though.
I agree that the world design and layout isnt up to par with other MVs. But it's combat mechanics are top tier. Same with the art direction and Ost. Symphony of the night is a hard game to top though so I feel you.
Hollow knight is a amazing game but flawed and I feel like it gets at times too much praise even if I think it deserves it aka my problem with it is how it at times spams obnoxious enemy’s at you and some frustrating boss fights that are a bit bs even if the boss quality itself is great the pure vessel and three of the mantis lords being so of my favorite bosses does this game have that issue
Typically, I love Metroidvanias. But when I played Blasphemous, to keep this short, I found it just... okay overall. Liked the style and concepts more than the gameplay, and after my first blind run where I got everything that couldn't be permanently missed by accident, (boo to that sort of design in any game but ESPECIALLY Metroidvanias which usually can be trusted not to to do that,) I didn't care to go back for absolute completion. However, that was two years ago, back before the updates. So, in light of those, would it make sense for someone like me to go back to it? Did the updates do anything to change the experience overall, or just add more of what I was personally pretty meh about in the first place?
I think the updates really added alot to the experience. But the core game is still what it was. If you didn't love the combat there's not much of a difference. The new boss fights are pretty interesting. There's new story elements and lore. And yea it's not exactly like old school Metroidvanias. It has alot of the souls borne DNA. So multiple playthroughs will be required. Getting 100% takes quite a bit of effort and research. I used reddit for info. Instead of using a full blown guide. Ill say this this. I wasn't really feeling the game on my first run. When I went back for the 100% I started to notice all the nuance and detail. Maybe run it again with a guide. Explore all the content available.
@@adamsunderland0823 Ah, I see. No tweaks to the overall experience, enemy behavior, new early game content or anything like that? Dang, sometimes updates do change things across the board, I was hoping this was one of those times. Well, thanks for the thorough and prompt answer in any case. I guess it's possible that a second playthrough of Blasphemous could set a new lifetime record for how long I had to play a game before it fully clicked. By a huge margin. I'll keep it in the "get to eventually" list. Still, it's weird that a combination of two series/genres I so consistently enjoy ended up being two great tastes that didn't taste so good together. I think the issue is that I have different combat expectations for 2d and 3d games. I'm fine with careful, technical Dark Souls combat in 3D, but years of 2D Castlevanias (And Bloodstained) makes me want lots of big flashy attacks and a more... breezy combat system when it's 2d.
Have you ever played Valfaris or Slain? Going to finally jump into Blasphemous now but I really enjoyed Valfaris and interested in your take on it, since you're a metroidvania fan. Wasn't too big on Slain however.
I haven't. Valfaris looks insane though. Definitely something I'm going to check out. That art style is wild. Slain looks a little generic. Still on my list though. And good luck with the blasphemous run.
Just got back on it yesterday. Going to get the plat then do a video comparing it to Blasphemous and other similar games. I am definitely liking it so far. Beautiful art direction and atmosphere.
i love it but im not good at it and get stressed out and stop playing for months. i like salt and sanctuary / sacrifice the best of those types of games.
I absolutely love b1, but feels like devs took kinda wrong direction on wounds of eventide dlc and b2. Notice how cutscenes from base game differ from the secret ending of wounds of eventide - this type of graphics we got in b2, and it.. Well it kinda sucks - grim dark 16 bit style gone, but we got some simplistic anime
You usually end up back tracking, even though you don't technically have too. Most people won't even know that on the fist few runs. You'll be all over the map looking for secrets an items. It's got so many Metroidvania quality's outside this one technicality.
I just started with Blasphemous on Switch using the pro controller but I’m finding that often when I approach an enemy and stop, my character turns around the opposite direction so when I start swinging my sword, he’s attacking the wrong direction and the enemy gets a free hit on me. This happen to anyone else?
It's because of the dead zone on the controller. It's too tight. I had this problem with metal gear master collection. Run up to someone, let off the stick and it looks the opposite way. There's nothing that be done about it. For example PS2 controllers and games had much larger dead zones. If the stick moved a little in a direction the character wouldn't move. It bounces back on the stick when you let off. I used the d pad for blasphemous.
I wish the gameplay was more fun. The slash slash slash dodge slash slash gets boring. You can only use one magic attack at a time. Besides that, it's awesome.
this game has less handholding than any game I've ever played. The map is riddled with icons with no legend telling you what they are. The areas are not scaled to difficulty and it doesn't tell you which area to start journeying down. The bosses are dark soul difficult. One piece of advice and don't feel like a wuss for taking it: Play this game through from start to finish with a walk-through guide, like the one Fextralife offers. it won't make the game easier, and it will ensure you don't retrace your steps 100 times fighting all those ultra hard enemies you previously beat while attempting to find out where you are supposed to go next.
@@adamsunderland0823 Go right ahead and tell me how it will ruin the experience. i'm honestly listening. but you'll need to explain how someone would know to take the unhatched egg from Grievance all the way across the map back to the Mountains, plant that egg at a tree, leave the screen, then return to retrieve the egg which has now hatched, then take that hatched egg back to Alberto and offer it to the golden mask lady. Dude, just no. I get your purism, I do, but no not for this game.
Has anyone played the latest DLC Wounds of eventide?? Im confused by how it works? Do I need to start the game from the beg again or does the DLC start where the game ends?!
I personally found this game to be super buggy when it comes to the platforming, and I would have liked it to be a bit more difficult. Most bosses were down in one or two tries. If hollow knight gets a 10/10 from me and I consider 5/10 to be average, I would give this game around 6/10 because I did really like certain aspects of it. But randomly dying about 5 times from weird screen scroll bugs really brings it down for me.
There's hardly any bugs in this game. Show me a video of buggy platforming. Or the screen rolling glitch causing anyone to die. Maybe on pc because if you're pc. But the console versions ran really well.
Game is amazing. You did keep saying the movement was great which I disagree with. There’s not much progression of execution with your movement or upgrades you get. You just kind of jump, slide, and hold forward Think I was a missed opportunity.
(i am a bit late to the party) i didnt like Blasphemous. It is a beautiful game for sure, the art direction is incredible, spanish inquisition was rarely seen before. The combat is ok. But the exploration and level-design were a let down. As a Metroidvania, it was boring. It didnt live up to its name, Blasphemous, as in my opinion, it kept following the steps of its predecessors instead of symbollically killing them Not trying to belittle your work and love for this game, of course !
No no. I prefer to hear opposing opinions. Alot of people are saying it isn't even a Metroidvania. The exploration being one of the main reasons. Taking all this feed back into consideration for my Hollow Knight video.
@@adamsunderland0823 heresy! Unlocking specific skills to reach new areas is what Metroidvania is about (perhaps not as much as others games, but still). People these days... You should do game reviews, very well made
Thanks. Going to try and make one for dying light 2 and elden Ring. Get better at making vids overall.
Blasphemous is awesome along with Bloodstained ritual of the night
you should check out infernax and Death's Gambit Afterlife
Deaths gambit did catch my eye
Top 5 game of all time, definitely. What's crazier is that it's not even The Game Kitchen's best game
What is their best game?
@@adamsunderland0823 personally, I'd say The Last Door. It's the only other game they've made, which is crazy. I highly, HIGHLY recommend it if you're a fan of Lovecraft or psychological horrors
Dead cells is fun too but it's way harder and you have to run through the game all at once and has 5 different levels of difficulty that changes the enemies and weapons.
here is my recomendation to u Dark Devotion a metroidvania noth meni pepol know and Hellpoint , Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption greyt vid good luck weth your chanel
I will check them out. And thanks.
This game is in my top three
God of War
Blood Borne
Blasphemous
Decent game but just doesn't come close to hollow night, just a absolute masterpiece.
I haven't played hollow knight. But what I can say is a prefer the art design in Blasphemous. We'll have to see about the gameplay.
@@adamsunderland0823 Also an easy +1 for Blasphemous imo.
Very good game, and its underrated like salt and sanctuary.
Nice review, thx.
No. Thank you for watching.
Check out Death's gambit. It's super slept on.
Bet
I observed you snuck in the castlevania ost
Second best metroidvania after Hollow Knight for me. A great game.
Try Aeterna Noctis perhaps. Both games are some of the best in the genre.
Great video :o
Thank you sir
Dope video.
Appreciate that. I worked and cared about this video alot.
Great game. I must replay to see the DLC
Dlc is fantastic. I still haven't even played all the content.
This video is actually quality af bro
Thanks Son
I think I know you
@@jaiddanmoffett3660 hmmm??

Nice review. I do like me some metroidvania games. Might have to hit up that psn store.

3 hours recording and mixing the voice over.
Used my cheap stage mic and added eq compression and a noise gate.
Take years learning how to be an audio engineer.

Getting footage that went with the voice over. Finding music that fit.
Takes months to learn how to use a video editor.

100 views isn't too shabby. That's more views than subscribers you have right now. You got it man.
@@Chrisjb1983 Plenty of people have good personality's. But they don't have the skills needed to create. You can't have sub par sound, editing, ideas, etc and get consistent views.
Just sit in front of your cell phone talking about games with no thumbnails, no editing, no personal touches like adding your own music that you created, and see how far you get.

.... DEFINITELY worth it!
on sale right now too!
Have you played Hollow Knight?
it's good and addictive but let's not exaggerate. the world design/layout is one of the major things holding this back from being even a top 10 metroidvania, as well as some other issues. it doesn't remotely hold a candle to symphony of the night. even for recent games, i'd put it well below bloodstained.
the pixel art in the game and cutscenes is beautiful though.
I agree that the world design and layout isnt up to par with other MVs. But it's combat mechanics are top tier. Same with the art direction and Ost. Symphony of the night is a hard game to top though so I feel you.
Please play hollow knight it is by far the best metroidvania of all time. Blasphemous is very fuckin good too tho
3:12 how the hell did you survive that ?, when i fought the snake that attack always oneshot me
Just stack anti-electricity rosaries
not the electric attack the biting@@dudeimtellingthetruth
What do you think of symponthy of the nights
Symphony is one of my all-time favorite games. I love the Ost and gameplay. Learning that map as a kid is an experience I'll never forget.
I need to play though it soon. I've heard it was hard. I only made like halfway through the game.
@@adamsunderland0823 ok just wondering and I’m excited to play it looks like the combat is very fluid so I’ll love that
Hollow Knight is perfect and flawless.
Cool Music!
😏
I didnt hear you list Hollow Knight. Ender Lilies is a great metroidvania too.
Working on another video. Addressing hollow knight.
I'm curious if you've played hollow knight and how you'd rank the two against each other. I didn't hear you list it in your played MVias
I've been slowly running through it. I plan on making a video. Thanks for watching!!!!!
You should definetely try hollow knight! I think you'll love it
Just got back on it yesterday. Going to get the plat then do a video comparing it to Blasphemous and other similar games. I am definitely liking it so far. Beautiful art direction and atmosphere.
@@adamsunderland0823 I'm especially hyped these days since they gave a new trailer for the sequel! can't wait for it to come out
Watch the Trailer, see the light. GRIME. The other Underrated Metroidvania no one is talking about.
For me is YES, best metroidvania of all the time, why?? It's epic story, music, pixel art, gameplay, original universe, exploration, collectibles.
i love it but im not good at it and get stressed out and stop playing for months.
i like salt and sanctuary / sacrifice the best of those types of games.
Lol. I was getting killed a lot in salt. Blasphemous wasn't so bad though. Definitely got to play sacrifice soon.
It's in par with Castlevania : SoTN
SOTN > Blasphemous but it is really good :D
I absolutely love b1, but feels like devs took kinda wrong direction on wounds of eventide dlc and b2.
Notice how cutscenes from base game differ from the secret ending of wounds of eventide - this type of graphics we got in b2, and it.. Well it kinda sucks - grim dark 16 bit style gone, but we got some simplistic anime
Stun locking is the bane of this game and it's sequel existence
Would say Blaster Master Zero is the greatest Metroid Vania of all time. But yeah Blasphemous is very good as well.
Commenting for algorithm
Man I love this video
I appreciate that. I was hyped on the game when I made it.
At this point blasphemous isn't even a real metroidvania
Since the backtracking is almost completely optional
@@adamsunderland0823 thank you I’ll start trying that. Maybe I’ll use the stick for general movement but the D pad for combat
Bro a year later I find this and it was fun to watch. "Go play Spiderman" lol
Thanks. I think it might be the one actual good video I've made.
@adamsunderland0823 part 2 is pretty good buy I wish they stuck to the mea culpa.
I wish the gameplay was more fun. The slash slash slash dodge slash slash gets boring. You can only use one magic attack at a time. Besides that, it's awesome.
The parry though
Hollow knight comparison video needed
Hollow knight is better in my opinion it's just more loveable
You...you didn't love the puppy? :(
Have you played Hollow Knight?! Nothing beats it imo.
I'm playing through it rn. Going to make a video about it.
It's good but what about HollowKnight?
I'm working on the hollow knight play rn. We ll see. It's good for sure.
A lot of spoilers!!
You're right!!!
this game has less handholding than any game I've ever played.
Using a guide will 100% percent ruin the experience. But I agree that this game is brutal.
Using a guide will kinda mess up the experience, just search up a specific thing if you get stuck, do NOT look up a guide from the beginning
Has anyone played the latest DLC Wounds of eventide?? Im confused by how it works? Do I need to start the game from the beg again or does the DLC start where the game ends?!
They just add the dlc to the base game. So if you have the latest update. All the dlc content is in your game world.
@@adamsunderland0823 I'm confused.. Does the DLC start where the base game ended?? Isn't there additional story content
How can i know the mission that i need to do ? I always forget whatever the npc tell me to do @@
I would argue that hollow Knight as a contender for best metroidvania.
I lost the bigest discount of it...wait for next
I think this game has AAA value. So if you get during a sale, that's a steal for sure.
@@adamsunderland0823 i bought the Record of lodoss war....its a very goodbone as well. Im having fun with and playing Valfaris and Slain as well
I personally found this game to be super buggy when it comes to the platforming, and I would have liked it to be a bit more difficult.
From what I got here u didn't play Hollow Knight right ?
I've played it. Just not the platinum on PS4. Hollow Knight is very good too. Rn I would still have Blasphemous number 1.
Game is amazing. You did keep saying the movement was great which I disagree with. There’s not much progression of execution with your movement or upgrades you get. You just kind of jump, slide, and hold forward
Think I was a missed opportunity.
The sequel is coming out soon. Maybe there will be some more movement upgrades.
(i am a bit late to the party) i didnt like Blasphemous. It is a beautiful game for sure, the art direction is incredible, spanish inquisition was rarely seen before. The combat is ok. But the exploration and level-design were a let down. As a Metroidvania, it was boring. It didnt live up to its name, Blasphemous, as in my opinion, it kept following the steps of its predecessors instead of symbollically killing them
Not trying to belittle your work and love for this game, of course !
On the other hand, i loved Hollow Knight, despite its crushing difficulty in optional endgame contents, but i'll give this one a fresh new go
Have fun !
