If dark souls taught me anything is you don't need end game gear to defeat a boss. I actually took out the charred visage boss first than any other (because back tracking is annoying), which was pretty difficult, but managing to do so made the other bosses a piece of cake.

Too late, the snowy mountains was my first area and I regret it so much. My top reason of death is poison. Because the stubborn and idiot me decided to grab every collectible locked behind a toxic gas that I could find just to *then* find a poison immunity relic. I facepalmed so hard.
If you see a hint of snow, DON'T KILL ANY OTHER BOSS THAN THE CHARRED VISAGE'S because the moment you enter the first snow room it triggers a side quest which would be broken by doing this. Unless you don't care or it was patched :D

In its first room there is a quest which the game considers started when you enter that room, not when you talk to the questgiver. After this it counts how many bosses you kill and makes the quest fail after killing two if you hadn't deliever an item to the NPC in that room. The item becomes acessible after killing Our Lady of the Charred Visage in the next location. Or you can just find an item which allows you to jump pits without dying and access the reward by doing it. The reward is, by the way, a prayer which gives lifesteal to sword attacks.
It doesn't need a patch, entering Where Olive Trees Wither starts a timer that is dependent on various things (i.e. other boss kills but also new parts of map discovered, it's still not clear how the timer works, but it's not dependent exclusively on bosses, nor on real/in-game time passing). If the timer advances too much, the Gemino sidequest won't be available anymore, but you can still use Linen of Golden Thread to access the tomb where you obtain Saeta Dolorosa anyway
If anyone is struggling with blasphemous take everything slowly and methodically. Always prioritize buying the mea culpa moveset upgrades, the dodge-thrust especially is super op. Also the mountain isn't too bad, just take it slow and use the charge attack and dodge thrust. I ran it early for the goodies and it was fine

Haha but fortunately I managed to kill the boss due to luck(the boss was positioning itself lower and easier to hit). I thought the same as you and there's also a tree guy that give quest so I thought it was the correct road. I was wrong xD. Going to the other area was a breeze after I bought the defense item that cost 5000
Yeah the dodge thrust is the one I got last. The description was so vague, that I wasn't sure what it would do, so I avoided it. But it's wayyy better than the others.
I'm currently around 85% complete in this masterpiece of a game, and I just wanted to come back to say a huge thank you for these couple of simple tips you posted here as they honestly helped me bigtime in what is a really goddam hard game especially upto around the 40%+ stage I reckon. Probably the one most important tip I constantly had in mind was the "take it slow and methodical" And the other thing I constantly found myself saying was "unforgiving" In my opinion that word pretty much sums up a lot of how I found Blasphemous... However it just sucked me back in time and time again and most of the time I would make it just a little further, and that is the reason I love this epic game so much. The one thing I now fear above all else... Its there life after Blasphemous? 🤪
3:23 this gotta be the biggest cap I've ever seen. Prayers are broken if used correctly, Debla of the lights with a good build 3 shots bosses. Tiento is just as broken with the invulnerability, also there's a rosary bead to counter your argument for not being worth using because of the cast time
Snowy Mountain? If the jump looks too far, that's because it is. Follow the wind. Wait till the wind is blowing towards the direction that you want to jump towards before you make the leap. The wind will push you further.
If you love those those moments in Metroid where you learn of a secret and think "well how the heck was I supposed to find that blind?" ... Blasphemous is the game for you!
Yea fair point, for some reason I didn't have too many problems finding the secret rooms in Blasphemous, maybe due to the fact I would mainly use the sliding lunge move and that tends to pop the walls open sweetly. 😝
it is pretty simple, if an area looks like a waste of space /too empty/ abrupt dead end /unnecessary geometrical shape- then thats the literal hint of an illusory wall and secret nearby. if anything blasphemous is one these games tgat actually handles the secrets really well and arent obtuse at all
Actually if you're going for 100% completion, you're supposed to go to Where Olive Trees Wither (the snowy area) first, as it is the fastest place where you can get a medicinal item before fighting a boss (preventing Tirso's associates to die), and also it's where you can fill the Golden Thimble so Gémino doesn't turn to wood (if you fight any boss before the Lady of the Charred Visage, he gets entombed). Doing those things early unlocks the Saeta Dolorosa prayer from Engracia's tomb, an achievement and -in the long run- the Mediterranean Diet item from Tirso
This is fantastic information...buuuut just like he states in the video, there would be no way to know this unless you read a guide, or hear it from someone. The mountain sounds really hard! For reference I just got this game on switch, so im about to start a first play through. Do I really want to suffer so much at the start? Especially since I havent played before.
@@jakeryan2805 100% agree with you here, but I very much read npc dialogues and try to peice together quests long before I do them. I find this helps with both 100% the game and progressing in the most comfortable linear fasion. First i checked Tirso, then the old pilgrim. This sort of journey I was taken on practically held my hard through this amazing game.
Im actually glad I went up the mountain on my blind playthrough. It taught me the hard way how to play the game and didn't hold my hand at all during the battle with the charred lady. It helped me later on when the bosses actually got difficult because I knew I could beat them if I just kept trying and learned their pattern

I had the exact same issue going to the snow location first and just assumed that was the difficulty level of the game....after 40 tries on the burn victim boss....I looked online and found out with one healing item....that shit was near impossible.
Wow this is probably gonna be a huge help I just started at the game and ended up in the mountain area and was honestly confused because up until this point the game wasn’t that hard and all the sudden I was getting smoked which lead me to this video thank you haha
I had a hard time in Jondo during my first playthrough, but when I saw the snowy area and the enemies I instantly knew this isn't the right place for now.
To me the only place that is prohibitive if you aren't well leveled is the new area Mourning and Havoc. The enemies there can one-hit you if you don't have full health
I did the exact same thing, I went to the snowy mountains first. After many attempts I left to look for power ups eventually came back to it. It was much easier
I had no idea what I was heading into with this game as my big bro lured me into it with its breathtaking visuals and aesthetic months ago. Aside from one other Metroidvania game that I barely even started, I jumped straight to playing it and needless to say, it's kicked my ass millions of times. There was no going back. But after almost 60 hours, I'm doing the boss rush mode and the Bloodstained DLC. (This is the first Metroidvania I've finished). Nice video, by the way! Me from months ago should have watched this first but there's excitement to playing blind and all.
as i first played blasphemous, i went to the mountain and got kicked in the ass many many times, but i ddn't give up and finished the whole area the rest of the game is still hard and surprising but i am now able to first-try every boss i come across :^)

Its pretty darn awesome. I love how its still getting alot of love still to this day. They seem to keep giving us DLC and upgrades. We gotta do more videos soon.
I ended up doing the Charred Visage first as well, not because Deogracias order, but because I simply missed the Mercy Dreams entrance and got stuck at Jondo. Good thing is that it forced me to explore almost all the open map before defeting my first boss, so I was quite powerful and the other 2 bosses were quite easy after that.
I also the noted that the npc mentioned the snow area first and when I went there I realized right away to try another route which worked out cause now I have 4 flasks and the dash attack which seems to be insanely good. I'm late to the party on this one and loving it so far. This game is giving me goat metriodvania vibes, its early tho I have a ways to go before I can really say that but so far it blowing my mind. Fun ass combat. Love that parry and finishing moves. Controls are perfect and when I die it always is fair and my fault even if it's a spike pit. If I take it slow I havent been dying much. Im a huge soullike and metroidvania fan and this one feels like the perfect combo so far. Good video thanks!

My first run I ended up using a prayer build with only the lighting and very first prayer you get and just putting on all the beads that buff the prayers. Absolutely melted bosses, you just have to know when to pop them and how to use the environment and spacing to your advantage. If you can get it to hit more than once you’re golden.
with the righ calculation, first prayer allowed me to kill one of the bosses ( 3 flying ladies??) almost instantly, i dealt absolute crazy amount of damage out of nowhere. so no, prayers are pretty useful sometimes
I find Jondo first by accidently opening that invisible door in albero. This was my first metroidvania/souls game and I still had the curiosity of if there were invisible walls in the game 😂
I’m kind of the opposite on most of your points. The vague descriptions of items, felt right at home with me being a dark souls fan. And I like that you can go to the snowy mountains first without being blocked. But I like games that do that. If you run into a wall, come back later and try after you go somewhere else. The only thing that did make me a bit sad was the prayers. I rarely used them. And like you, I used the attack speed one but that was rare. Definitely a missed opportunity for them to have done more with that feature. But I love the game.
I will admit that i've been a huge fan of Metroidvania games my whole life. Everything from old Metroid, SotN, hollow knight, Dread, even the newer and class Shantae games that are in that style, though more light hearted than the others. I must have played over 100 different games in this genre and as much as a lot of people might hate me... I kind of feel this game is the worst. By far the biggest problem is the lack of explination. I did like the lore and such, Dark Souls is one of my favorite games of all time and I've been way into Elden Ring as of late but those games did an amazing job teaching me what to do. Little game hints like the light showing me where to go or explaining general direction like with the bell, level ups and upgrades and such are made so much easier... Excluding maybe weapon upgrades in Dark Souls that is. This game just doesn't tell me a damn thing. Even my best friend who loves this game openly said that this game tells you nothing and he had to look stuff up to figure out what to do, not with the story or side quest, just basical funtions of the game. The combat also isn't very creative or fun most the time. I know as gamers we often mock the quick time event being one of the worst still living mechanics in games that should have died out with the lives system but nearly every battle with a minor enemy is attack, wait for them to count or role out of the way depending on enemy and preference, hit, done. Even the upgrades don't say much and sometimes reading them several times requires me to just say fuck it and go to a wiki or something to see what even changes when I equip something. It just feels to me like this game is more about style over substance. The game looks good, sounds good, and feels good when I play it but it just sort of throws you to the wolves with little more than basic combat being explained and nothing else. It has a very, throw you to the wolves, style like dark souls but just fails on so many levels to explain concepts, what is important, how to level up, or what to do. I still don't know how to upgrade some things, what some items do, why there are so many equip menus, where the key items are in my inventory, and even when I die I don't seem to lose any guilt or anything so what's the point of retrieving the spot where I died? Metroidvania are by far some of my favorite games but I really have to say that Blasphemous might be the worst one in a very, very long line of games in this genre I have played. Plus IDK if this adds insult to injury or not but the game was almost pathetically easy. Every boss and enemy was so weak and easy I did runs, first time for some bosses, no damage whatsoever. The enviornment is more of a threat than everything else in this game by a lot.
In my experience with all the open world games i've played, snowy areas hurt like a b*tch. The traps hurt like a b*tch The enemies hurt like a b*tch The SNOW hurts like a b*tch The bosses hurt like a b*tch EVERYTHING hurts like a b*tch. So yeah, avoid those areas until later on when you're fully prepared for them.
funny enough, I think the game is intentionally designed to trick you into going to the snowy area first. it's a teaching moment: you can keep struggling through the area, or turn back and do something else, therefore teaching you about how non-linear the game is. if you decide to come back to it after trying the area, you'll realize that the order of your actions matter, as killing a boss or two and then coming back will trigger flags/changes to certain NPCs and events. it's a good game design moment imo! although metroidvanias/soulslike are notoriously brutal so I guess it's not gonna work for certain players with expectations lol
I don't recall the guy telling you specifically to go to the mountain peak first. Just there were three humiliations you need to undertake before entering the place at the far right. Also you didn't you didn't expect to do platforming in a 2d sidescroller?

And btw there is always multiple options in where to go in metroidvanias so you not thinking hey I shouldn't be here this early after dying 5 or so times is entirely on you. Thanks for the advise I was indeed in the snowy area, I was having such a difficult time that I decided to investigate, now I’m going back to other region and come back later.
The last one seems to be the only one that's like an actual or significant point. Cause I'm still super early but I was anticipating having to climb higher and such first.
I think along as you have the lunge attack ability the snowy Church area is not so bad. That move makes short work out of most things. And the poison resist buff
I followed the Fextralife walk-through guide from start to finish. it was very helpful, and minimized revisiting areas only as needed. funny though -- that guide has you go into the snowy area very early in the walk-through. and I agree it was hard.
Most of the things you mentioned are why I decided to give Blasphemous a go, and regarding your final piece of advice, following that advice will (temporarily) lock you out of an area due to "failing" a side quest. To me, you taking on that mountain and overcoming the boss sounds like quite the accomplishment - pretty sure you felt like royalty after that. I'll also say that those effing spikes suck. Miriam's questline has taught me to sincerely hate them.

The snow area was the last one I checked in search for the 3 bosses and it was still a menace even with all the hours of gameplay I already had at that point. I had tried getting to it earlier in the game and quickly noticed that it was too difficult, so I turned back and went a different way
Ideally for the first three areas you want to go through Mercy Dreams and Ten Piedad first, then through the cistern and to the bell area, and then the mountain. I did Mercy Dreams, Mountain, Bell
The prayers are so over powered in a lot of situations. Especially with that bead that makes them stronger. A couple of the spells completely trivialized, what would have other wise been very tough enemies and bosses.
I should have watched this video first. Just got the game last week, and I also went to the snow level first. It was BRUTAL, and of course now it's a cake walk compared to that hike straight up difficulty curve mountain. I also just looked up to see how to upgrade my health potions since I had three of them sitting in my inventory with no clue how to fill them.
I went directly to where olive trees wither first and then kept going... I cleaned the area... I defeated the boss and I seriously busted my ass... I'm so dumb that I didn't even think I was taking the wrong route and thought the game was just that hard.
I actually found the Boss at the Snowy Mountains to be rather easy. The regulars enemies there were hard though. I did the Three Faiths Boss (the one with the acsending platform) first. Didn't have any health or fervor upgrades. Took me over an hour but when I beat it it felt awesome. I was ready for the next hard boss. Then the next 2 bosses were pretty light.

Every time I watch a guide on a boss or a level, I notice the player in the guide is way more powerful than me. I'm over ten hours in and still lost, and it's getting harder the farther in the game I get.
God damn it, I did the SAME thing with snowy location, beat it and was like: "Wow okay, that was hard", and than internet tells me that this is one of the most fucked up locations and you need some upgrades to it... Brilliant game.
I’m playing through this now. Loving it so far. Finally just beat the bro/sis duo on the bridge and progressed the story. Just got a lot harder. I did the charred visage first. It was a bit of a challenge but I think it got me ready for the rest of the map before moving passed the bridge.

As much as I loved this game, am I the only one that thought the explanation to unlock the real ending was very convoluted? With how hard the game is,I was rushing forward as much as possible and in the end I found myself finishing the game without unlocking half the stuff and when I read what I had to do to finish the game properly I thought "no way".

DON'T JUMP ONTO THEM.
DON'T DROP OFF A LEDGE INTO THEM.

I did the where olive tress, I gave him the filled Golden Thimble, after I came back he turn into wood. I get all the items in the tomb tho

I had the exact same issue going to the snow location first and just assumed that was the difficulty level of the game....after 40 tries on the burn victim boss....I looked online and found out with one healing item....that shit was near impossible.

Wow this is probably gonna be a huge help I just started at the game and ended up in the mountain area and was honestly confused because up until this point the game wasn’t that hard and all the sudden I was getting smoked which lead me to this video thank you haha
I had a hard time in Jondo during my first playthrough, but when I saw the snowy area and the enemies I instantly knew this isn't the right place for now.

To me the only place that is prohibitive if you aren't well leveled is the new area Mourning and Havoc. The enemies there can one-hit you if you don't have full health

I did the exact same thing, I went to the snowy mountains first. After many attempts I left to look for power ups eventually came back to it. It was much easier

I had no idea what I was heading into with this game as my big bro lured me into it with its breathtaking visuals and aesthetic months ago. Aside from one other Metroidvania game that I barely even started, I jumped straight to playing it and needless to say, it's kicked my ass millions of times. There was no going back. But after almost 60 hours, I'm doing the boss rush mode and the Bloodstained DLC. (This is the first Metroidvania I've finished). Nice video, by the way! Me from months ago should have watched this first but there's excitement to playing blind and all.
Prayers make Boss fights sooo much easier! You got to figure out which one to use! This game is perfect mix of DS and Metroid!
as i first played blasphemous, i went to the mountain and got kicked in the ass many many times, but i ddn't give up and finished the whole area
the rest of the game is still hard and surprising but i am now able to first-try every boss i come across :^)
This by far the best metroidvania game I've ever played.

I ended up doing the Charred Visage first as well, not because Deogracias order, but because I simply missed the Mercy Dreams entrance and got stuck at Jondo. Good thing is that it forced me to explore almost all the open map before defeting my first boss, so I was quite powerful and the other 2 bosses were quite easy after that.
All you had to do was use the upgrade system
I also the noted that the npc mentioned the snow area first and when I went there I realized right away to try another route which worked out cause now I have 4 flasks and the dash attack which seems to be insanely good. I'm late to the party on this one and loving it so far. This game is giving me goat metriodvania vibes, its early tho I have a ways to go before I can really say that but so far it blowing my mind. Fun ass combat. Love that parry and finishing moves. Controls are perfect and when I die it always is fair and my fault even if it's a spike pit. If I take it slow I havent been dying much. Im a huge soullike and metroidvania fan and this one feels like the perfect combo so far. Good video thanks!

Dark souls and Mario's love child
My first run I ended up using a prayer build with only the lighting and very first prayer you get and just putting on all the beads that buff the prayers. Absolutely melted bosses, you just have to know when to pop them and how to use the environment and spacing to your advantage. If you can get it to hit more than once you’re golden.
with the righ calculation, first prayer allowed me to kill one of the bosses ( 3 flying ladies??) almost instantly, i dealt absolute crazy amount of damage out of nowhere. so no, prayers are pretty useful sometimes
I find Jondo first by accidently opening that invisible door in albero. This was my first metroidvania/souls game and I still had the curiosity of if there were invisible walls in the game 😂

I’m kind of the opposite on most of your points. The vague descriptions of items, felt right at home with me being a dark souls fan. And I like that you can go to the snowy mountains first without being blocked. But I like games that do that. If you run into a wall, come back later and try after you go somewhere else. The only thing that did make me a bit sad was the prayers. I rarely used them. And like you, I used the attack speed one but that was rare. Definitely a missed opportunity for them to have done more with that feature. But I love the game.
I will admit that i've been a huge fan of Metroidvania games my whole life. Everything from old Metroid, SotN, hollow knight, Dread, even the newer and class Shantae games that are in that style, though more light hearted than the others. I must have played over 100 different games in this genre and as much as a lot of people might hate me... I kind of feel this game is the worst.
By far the biggest problem is the lack of explination. I did like the lore and such, Dark Souls is one of my favorite games of all time and I've been way into Elden Ring as of late but those games did an amazing job teaching me what to do. Little game hints like the light showing me where to go or explaining general direction like with the bell, level ups and upgrades and such are made so much easier... Excluding maybe weapon upgrades in Dark Souls that is. This game just doesn't tell me a damn thing. Even my best friend who loves this game openly said that this game tells you nothing and he had to look stuff up to figure out what to do, not with the story or side quest, just basical funtions of the game.
The combat also isn't very creative or fun most the time. I know as gamers we often mock the quick time event being one of the worst still living mechanics in games that should have died out with the lives system but nearly every battle with a minor enemy is attack, wait for them to count or role out of the way depending on enemy and preference, hit, done. Even the upgrades don't say much and sometimes reading them several times requires me to just say fuck it and go to a wiki or something to see what even changes when I equip something.
It just feels to me like this game is more about style over substance. The game looks good, sounds good, and feels good when I play it but it just sort of throws you to the wolves with little more than basic combat being explained and nothing else. It has a very, throw you to the wolves, style like dark souls but just fails on so many levels to explain concepts, what is important, how to level up, or what to do. I still don't know how to upgrade some things, what some items do, why there are so many equip menus, where the key items are in my inventory, and even when I die I don't seem to lose any guilt or anything so what's the point of retrieving the spot where I died?
Metroidvania are by far some of my favorite games but I really have to say that Blasphemous might be the worst one in a very, very long line of games in this genre I have played. Plus IDK if this adds insult to injury or not but the game was almost pathetically easy. Every boss and enemy was so weak and easy I did runs, first time for some bosses, no damage whatsoever. The enviornment is more of a threat than everything else in this game by a lot.
In my experience with all the open world games i've played, snowy areas hurt like a b*tch.
The traps hurt like a b*tch
The enemies hurt like a b*tch
The SNOW hurts like a b*tch
The bosses hurt like a b*tch
EVERYTHING hurts like a b*tch.
So yeah, avoid those areas until later on when you're fully prepared for them.
funny enough, I think the game is intentionally designed to trick you into going to the snowy area first. it's a teaching moment: you can keep struggling through the area, or turn back and do something else, therefore teaching you about how non-linear the game is. if you decide to come back to it after trying the area, you'll realize that the order of your actions matter, as killing a boss or two and then coming back will trigger flags/changes to certain NPCs and events. it's a good game design moment imo! although metroidvanias/soulslike are notoriously brutal so I guess it's not gonna work for certain players with expectations lol

I don't recall the guy telling you specifically to go to the mountain peak first. Just there were three humiliations you need to undertake before entering the place at the far right. Also you didn't you didn't expect to do platforming in a 2d sidescroller?

And btw there is always multiple options in where to go in metroidvanias so you not thinking hey I shouldn't be here this early after dying 5 or so times is entirely on you. I think along as you have the lunge attack ability the snowy Church area is not so bad. That move makes short work out of most things. And the poison resist buff

I followed the Fextralife walk-through guide from start to finish. it was very helpful, and minimized revisiting areas only as needed. funny though -- that guide has you go into the snowy area very early in the walk-through. and I agree it was hard.
Most of the things you mentioned are why I decided to give Blasphemous a go, and regarding your final piece of advice, following that advice will (temporarily) lock you out of an area due to "failing" a side quest. To me, you taking on that mountain and overcoming the boss sounds like quite the accomplishment - pretty sure you felt like royalty after that. I'll also say that those effing spikes suck. Miriam's questline has taught me to sincerely hate them.

The snow area was the last one I checked in search for the 3 bosses and it was still a menace even with all the hours of gameplay I already had at that point. I had tried getting to it earlier in the game and quickly noticed that it was too difficult, so I turned back and went a different way

Ideally for the first three areas you want to go through Mercy Dreams and Ten Piedad first, then through the cistern and to the bell area, and then the mountain. I did Mercy Dreams, Mountain, Bell
Exactly what I did. I think this is the best route. It sets you up for easy backtracking.
The prayers are so over powered in a lot of situations. Especially with that bead that makes them stronger. A couple of the spells completely trivialized, what would have other wise been very tough enemies and bosses.
I should have watched this video first. Just got the game last week, and I also went to the snow level first. It was BRUTAL, and of course now it's a cake walk compared to that hike straight up difficulty curve mountain. I also just looked up to see how to upgrade my health potions since I had three of them sitting in my inventory with no clue how to fill them.
I went directly to where olive trees wither first and then kept going... I cleaned the area... I defeated the boss and I seriously busted my ass... I'm so dumb that I didn't even think I was taking the wrong route and thought the game was just that hard.
I actually found the Boss at the Snowy Mountains to be rather easy. The regulars enemies there were hard though. I did the Three Faiths Boss (the one with the acsending platform) first. Didn't have any health or fervor upgrades. Took me over an hour but when I beat it it felt awesome. I was ready for the next hard boss. Then the next 2 bosses were pretty light.
Rly good presentation told me all I need to know before giving the devs my money (It didn’t matter what u said I was gonna get it still appreciate the video)

Every time I watch a guide on a boss or a level, I notice the player in the guide is way more powerful than me. I'm over ten hours in and still lost, and it's getting harder the farther in the game I get.
Don’t have any regrets going to snowy area first because how much it pushed me wanting to be good at the game but damn it really was really hard
I just got good when I went into the snow area 😂 it was satisfying to get that area after the struggle
God damn it, I did the SAME thing with snowy location, beat it and was like: "Wow okay, that was hard", and than internet tells me that this is one of the most fucked up locations and you need some upgrades to it...

I’m playing through this now. Loving it so far. Finally just beat the bro/sis duo on the bridge and progressed the story. Just got a lot harder. I did the charred visage first. It was a bit of a challenge but I think it got me ready for the rest of the map before moving passed the bridge.

As much as I loved this game, am I the only one that thought the explanation to unlock the real ending was very convoluted? With how hard the game is,I was rushing forward as much as possible and in the end I found myself finishing the game without unlocking half the stuff and when I read what I had to do to finish the game properly I thought "no way".
