How SpaceX Landed A Rocket... Without Landing Legs. Catching a Giant Rocket With Giant Chopsticks

  • This morning SpaceX performed the 5th flight of their Starship/SuperHeavy launch system and once again made a clear step forward as they demonstrated precision touchdown with both the booster and the Starship. The booster touchdown demonstrated a radical new recovery method with the rocket carefully maneuvering next to a tower to be caught by a pair of arms, eliminating complicated articulating legs and shock absorbers.
The Starship stage flew to the Indian ocean and guided itself to a precision touchdown next to a buoy with a camera, delivering video of the landing and showing the accuracy of the guidance. Even more impressive when it became clear how much damage the control surfaces sustained during entry.

  • @phil4986

The repeatability aspect is the key. The touchdown was beautifully gentle. This is by design, as the transition from dropping to stopping cannot reach an unsustainable stress point. The booster could land successfully, and if it landed too fast and hard, everything under the main top ring, where the arms are, could just tear off under the ring. They will have to do x ray exams of those landing 'wings' to see if there are any cracks at the inside or throughout the wing structure. Rockets like this love to go up and down but not to stop especially suddenly and they despise sideways shifts across their structures. That's what makes moving rockets, once built, a very carefully done thing. It does not take much to completely ruin a rocket cylinder. I am constantly amazed at how great the people at Space X get this done. Bravo to all of them for maintaining a 100% level of work performance. It cannot be easy to do.
