After my time with Umbrella Chronicles, I was left pretty.....meh on the idea of Resident Evil's first step into the on rails shooter genre. Can another crack at it, be exactly what this series needs? I'm willing to pick my wiimote back up, and find out! Игры
This is the RE game where Steve actually didn't piss me off as much.
If anything, that deserves credit right there.
I agree. Preferred his voice actor, even if he doesn't sound like a 17-year-old.
@@AvalancheReviews Okay, I honestly don't get why people say he is annoying. I didn't think he was that bad, just a cocky teenager at his very worst, but a sympathetic at his best. I actually felt bad for him, and was actually sad to see him die. I know I am in the minority, but I don't really see him as that bad.
@@winters_revolt It is the voice acting that kills it.
@@cookeris In my opinion, it's the fact, that he *WASTES SO MUCH AMMO!*
3:04 - Dat booty.
Darkside Chronicles had a HUUUUUUUUUUGE budget. You can tell the improvements right away
Big enough to pack the screen with booty polygons.
I only realise this now that Capcom put jiggle physics on the zombies.
[Insert necrophilia joke here]
Ya know, I was wondering if anyone else would take not of that. I had no idea, till I sped that clip down.
👌
You know, the one thing I most certainly appreciate from a story-telling standpoint with Darkside Chronicles, is that they actually made Steve Burnside likable, which I thought was impossible.
He did seem way more personable, but I guess any change would have been an improvement really.
True. The way he came off in Code Veronica was just... unbearable. He was whiny, perverted, gungho. That's the worst combination to have in a RE title.
Also, I caught that Lab music near the beginning of the review. Nicely placed.
lol i don't know how the original Steve is perverted, and i don't think i'm missing anything... original Steve was never shown as a pervert, and always seemed to view Claire in more of a romantic way, but this DC Steve in the other hand... he's the real pervert.
@@dandantsm6560 Go back to the scene in Code Veronica after Claire and Steve crash into the antarctic base and you'll see Steve stare at and try to sneak a kiss from Claire while she was unconscious.
That is downright creepy.
@@dragonkyn20 yes, i know that scene, but i think what really happend there was not him being objectively a pervert, but a really stupid way to show that he had romantic feelings towards Claire, man even when he's looking at her he's just looking at her face and all. Now DsC Steve? just a straight up perv, he was just looking directly at her ass the whole time :T i'm not saying that what Steve was about to do on the plane was ok, i'm just saying those actions come from a different place.
In case no one said it yet: The non-japanese Darkside Chronicles PS3 version has all the gore the Wii version has, but still retains the slight delay when using the PS Move controllers.
No, the US version isn't censored.
Yes, this is correct. Unfortunately, no physical release for the States.
Was pretty much what i was about to say. You can always get the game on the PSN, they often get on sales for VERY VERY cheap. You will get all the gore and stuff. Too bad there is no physical version but oh well...
I can confirm this. Amazing game on the ps3
city lights that was in the 90s.
Aside from the camera wobble, this game was gorgeous, fun, and engaging. It even had some sort of bump mapping to the surfaces
It sure did. I can't think of too many Wii games that were bump mapping surfaces and using per pixel lighting.
"Without Alyson Court, there can be no Claire Redfield."
That foreshadowing for the eventual Revelations 2 video lol
She is a loyal Capcom employee so not having her is not only insulting to the actress, but insulting to us hardcore fans that LOVE her as Claire. She became the ONLY RE VA to retain their character for over a decade, everyone else had been replaced once or more. Alyson Court is the one I love, and Claire is my favorite character for that reason. Not having her statue in the Collectors Edition of RE2 REimagining is the reason I'm not buying it.
PJ Lincoln I can understand being disappointed with not having one of your favorite VAs in a game. But outright refusing to buy a game because said VA isn't in the game seems like an overreaction. I can't imagine being that attached to a VA to the point of disregarding any and all other aspects if the game.
I'm personally more than excited for the remake. It looks amazing both visually and gamplay wise.
I don’t know how much I will care for the new Claire voice. All I know is it won’t be the same, but at least she looks right. Well under the right lighting I guess.
“And believe me, it’s not unusual for me to get a cramp when playing with my Wii.” There, hows that for a masturbation joke?
Perfect
Personally I love Umbrella Chronicles, I've beat every story in that game at least 10 times. I can't say the same for Darkside, which is strange because Claire and Leon are my most favorite RE characters so you would think I would play it more. I can't really tell you what I didn't like about it other than the shakey cam. I used to be able to get headshot after headshot in UC but not DC. It's sad how one little mechanic can make or break a game for people.
Well everyone has that one thing that just works for them. I like plenty of games that most people can't stand, so I'm real familiar with not being able to really know why I like a game.
I agree. Im a big rail shooter fan and I loved Umbrella Chronicles but was not a fan of DC. It just felt kind of janky to me and some of the bosses just were not fun. Like the Alexandria bpss at the end of the code veronica section.
Exactly. I just made a long comment about this and just scrolled down to see your comment almost exactly the same as mine. The camera completely broke this game which could have been pretty great otherwise. Such a bad design decision.
This game got a special place in my heart because as you said it was the closest thing to a remake of "Resident Evil 2", also it was the reason that encouraged me to play "RE: Code Veronica X". The dialogues inside the game are very natural and you can feel the intensity of the character (Leon vs "Trenchy", Steve vs Zombies aka Antonio or Chris about the Spencer Mansion "Deja Vu") instead of the ones from Umbrella Chronicles where the VA were just reading emotionless lines from a script. For me the "shaky camera" wasn't a big deal because was used to create immersion with the characters, but I gotta agree that something can be in a pain in the ass to aim in a specific weak point (the tentacles during Alexa Type-B fight).
This game is totally recommended for "Resident Evil" fans, especially if you like to revive the classics but with a different perspective, also the "Krauser Episodes" were very interesting to hear his inner thoughts about Leon and understand why he became a monster in "RE4". A solid 8/10 and a MUST play game.
I'll be waiting for Outbreak, Operation Racoon City and Revelations reviews respectively.
Looks like we agree completely
agreed
You forgot the best part, killer tofu mode
I did indeed
lol @ the jiggle physics @ 11:38 - 11:40
Now the question is: will the RE2 remake have jiggle physics on the female zombies????
Alyson Court was my first love because of her portrayal of Claire
Yup. Felt the same way at the time.
You're not alone there
Darkside is indeed a much better game than UC, and there's a huge assortment of much-needed upgrades to the formula. I also appreciate that it's closer to the source material, and gives us an entirely new story, despite the number of stories going down by 1. I agree, the camera wobble is a huge downside. Camera wobble and on-rails first person shooters are a very bad combo, and I have a feeling this is just another example of executive meddling in what otherwise would've been a near-perfect rail shooter game. I can deal with the wobble, but we all wish it wasn't there. I'm gonna go play Darkside now and work on maxing out that pistol.
Ha! Glad I inspired you! You're right though. I can handle the wobble, but the game would have been nearly perfect without it.
Closer to the source material? Did you play Code - Veronica?
The only thing I didn't like about this one was having Alexia murder Alfred, which is really out of character considering their implied relationship in the game. Also I miss Alfred's original actor Peter Oldring, who played it really campy, but Richard Cansino still does a good job. Fun fact: Richard Cansino is Rita Hayworth's nephew.
Really? Well it's a small damn world! HA
Yeah in Code Veronica she loved Alfred in a twisted incestuous way to the point that when Steve killed him she destroyed the snow plow Claire and him were using to escape, kidnapped them, experimented on Steve, turning him into a monster then had him nearly kill Claire. But in Darkside she strangles Alfred for not waking her up. I explain it as Claire overexaggerating how evil Alexia was when she told Leon what happened on Rockfort Island and in Antarctica because she hated Alexia for killing Steve.
I love that you could unlock the linear launcher, costumes, and full models for the enemies and characters
I don't know why but i still prefer umbrella chronicles mostly because of that shaky camera
I can understand that.
DC is pretty enjoyable, tbh. Oh, and Steve knows what's up at 3 minutes in. DATA.MP4
He sure as hell does
Yeah i really enjoy DC too, my favorite is Superman :P XD
OnyArt Direct Current?
When I borrowed this game from my friend back it the day, I didn't give it back for almost three months because I couldn't get enough of it. I earned the energy gun as a permanent weapon and used it to help me get all of the remain hidden goodies. The pistol was incredibly overpowered in this game once you fully upgraded it.
Try Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Dead Space: Extraction and The House of the Dead: Overkill to find out if rail shooters are really not for you. Those are about as good as the genre got.
I really didn´t care for how this game handled the Ashcroft, as they went from creepy and weirdly well fleshed to one dimensional clowns who are just evil. Seeing the RE4 version of Leon in 2´s scenario never bothered me btw, yet at least reddit hates that part of the game.
I wonder if the cliffhanger here and in Revelations 2 will ever be followed up on. Wesker´s secret army now have DiCaprio´s highly infested corpse (among other viruses). Them and sleeper agent Alexis would make for good villains if they team up.
that would be a really cool idea to follow up on, but now that 7 has changed the course of the series, I doubt we'll ever see that conclusion.
0:42 Was that intentional? the image, and game text fits quite perfect. :P
I'm going to totally act like it was......
Haha xD
My dude you need more subscribers. I appreciate you keeping up with the quality content. Thanks for the video!
I'll tell you, the way the subscribers have been rolling in, has blown me away. In my opinion, there should not be almost 18,000 people who give a damn about my opinions on video games. HA! Thanks for the love man!!
I always wondered why if one scenario is Leon telling Krauser about RE2's events is he saying things that didn't happen like Claire meeting Ada and him meeting Irons.
It's a pleasant surprise to see someone like Darkside Chronicles and going in depth as to why, a lot of folks give it a hard time imo. Glad you had fun with it.
That being said damn that camera to hell though.
Yeah, it's a pain in the ass most of the time. Thankfully it doesn't make me sick, like it does to other people.
I really do hate the fact Alyson Court won't be in the Resident Evil 2 remake, but then again, she is in a union, which contributed to Capcom changing their minds when they originally asked her.
Yeah, that will happen. It seems like most of the time, unions like that, do more harm than good.
She was still union when she did Resident Evil 2.What changed in the past two decades?
Capcom fell out with the unions, because of how much they control wages.
I remember her responding via RUclips video to Capcom pulling their offer as "petty and disrespectful"
Coming from someone that wanted to enter the acting industry and took classes to learn about the business, the idea behind joining the union was for job security. Otherwise, the companies that do hire you pay you extra dirt cheap which is the entertainment industry equivalent of minimum wage.
I remember I had both of those games on the PS3 those were Good times, and watching your awesome retrospective it gave me back awesome memories. Thanks for that jared, and both games need to come to the Switch & PS4
My pleasure man!
I grew up on Re4 and remember being so giddy to find out a new game with Leon was coming out. Loved the game on my wii
Capcom did reuse some areas from Outbreak and Code Veronica. Particularly the RPD. Most of Code Veronica was ripped and cleaned up verbatim
Really? Well they did a good job at making sure I couldn't tell.
Avalanche Reviews cool to see a reply. You do good work. Love the videos
I still remember how mad fans were when Capcom announced this game, they remade Raccoon City just for a rail shooter, but not for a proper remake...
Anyway, this is a great game, and it puts Umbrella Chronicles in shame...it actually makes it look like that was just a rushed product they released as a quick cash grab.
"without Alyson Court there is no Claire" :'(
I'm seriously enjoying these retrospective videos.
Good to hear!
I loved this game so much! me and my friend would play co op through the RE2 timeline every weekend for hours.
Thank you for making this retrospective on the resident evil games. Before watching you videos, the only ones i played and actually finished were resident evil 4, 5,6 and 7, 4 is on my top 10 favorite games ever.
I have resident evil remake on the gamecube, and in the 13 years i've owned the game i never played more than 1 or 2 hours, but after watching you videos i decided to actually start over, and man, this time i got hooked and actually finished the game for the first time and loved all the time i spent with it. What a great game. So thank you for making me want to play it.
That is awesome to hear! It puts a smile on my face when these videos inspire people to go out and play these games. Cheers man! Glad to be of service.
Always a pleasure seeing a new retrospective episode! Keep up the good work my man, looking forward to your opinion on RE7
Thanks man! It's going to be a good one
4:17 "as we all know, without Alyson Court, there can't be no Claire Redfield." You got my like and subscribe right there!
One of the best games visually on the Wii and one hell of a fun experience that did justice to RE2 and Code Veronica justice; two of my top 5 RE games. Wouldn't mind revisiting it again.
I liked this more than Umbrella Chronicles. I liked seeing a visually updated RE2 and CV, along with operation Javier and Hunks/Adas escape
A good, even very good rail shooter for the Wii and one of my rare good experience with the Nintendo console.
I had just bought it for the campaign of RE2 which is certainly one of the best, all with a good zapper (I had the one in the form of a shotgun a kind of SPAS 12).
That sounds cool as hell!
It was this one but all in black.
gamerfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/buck-shot.jpg
Again, I enjoy blasting through the series in a quick way when not having time for the originals, and you do get use to the camera wobble while trying to aim... Felt like a pro after mastering that.
And as for the new story with Krauser, it made his character much better than he was in RE4.
I absolutely loved playing the Umbrella Chronicles with my sister, I’m really sad I didn’t even hear about Darkside until now, it would have been great to know it fixed our problems with it.
The soundtracks of this game are so great that I still listen to them to this day.
I really like the RE 2 sections of this game, especially the cut-scenes, it was like the closest thing to a remake before the actual remake. Also found it interesting to see what happened to Leon after Raccoon City, and his work with Krauser. Oh, and Ada surviving, and escaping the city too :)
Ah, Paul Mercier's last hurrah as Leon.
Everything a sequel should be. Taking the original idea and improving the hell out of it. It’s easy to see how much more work went into Darkside Chronicles. Another video well done!
Thanks man! Yeah this is definitely the quintessential RE rail shooter. Ha!
Finally! Been waiting for the video since you announced it on Twitter...and I wasn't disappointed!!!
Good to hear!
Yknow, I think the only way for camera swaying to work in on rail shooters is for it to be one of those arcade cabinets you can sit in. Like that walking dead arcade shooter or the Jurassic park one. Or this one horror game at Dave and busters.
On a console game, it’s just irritating. At least I would imagine.
Once again a wonderful review, listened to this on my lunch break. Awesome job, looking forward to the next one and since your running down the RE game list prety fast, when are you doing the movies, haha. Next paycheck I intend to become a paytron keep it up man.
Thanks man! I appreciate the hell out of the support. Ya know, I've been thinking about covering the movies, but I don't know how much I can get away with, until the copyright strikes come. I've been hit for just including trailers of movies, but damn I would love to scream insults at those movies for a while. HA
Do outbreak next
NO....................but I will do after after the next video.
Avalanche Reviews nice bro 👍🏻 👍🏻
Great review, the game looks really good for its time and a lot of fun.
great video
can’t wait to hear your take on re7
We had the exact same experiences with Umbrell and Darkside Chronicles it seems. Umbrella is almost a low-budget shovelware game, while Darkside is a genuinely good light gun shooter.
Yep, Darkside is definitely the most well made game out of the two. I only wish the shaky cam wasn't so bad. A lot of people can't even play it because it makes them want to puke.
if I remember dc also allowed unlocking mutiple costumes in the game so you can play chapters with outfits like re4 leon or cowgirl claire and theyd show up on the cameras theres also tofu mode where the zombies are a bunch of tofu
Yep. I wanted to unlock that leon re4 costume this time, but didn't get a chance
Avalanche Reviews I think I unlocked it without trying for it just for completing scenarios still I kind of liked rpd outfit more always hoped theyd continued doing these cause theyd be diving into the next titles like survivour, dead aim,re4,re5,re6 or the frst revelations as chronicles
actuly a chronicles version of re4 sounds awesome if u think about it youd have more time with luiz as a player 2 then trade for ada when they kill him off
Hey man, thanks for being so consistent with the uploads. :)
I'm trying to keep it to every other Monday, but sometimes I can't just sit on a good video. The plan is to stay consistent with this 2 week schedule, but let's see how things go, now that school is starting back up.
Don't stress it too badly! You're doing really well, especially given the quality of your content. :) Good luck with classes!
I know a million people have said it, but you definitely can be the voice of Toonami. Toonami! Maybe the grey sequel to The Umbrella Chronicles and I appreciate your entire retrospective and everything you do for the Resident Evils fans thank you! Can't wait for the next video and I'm so excited because it is a huge series to me and obviously historical genre to video games and the medium as a whole thank you!
Thanks for all the love! And ever since this week, 2 people have said I should voice Toonami. HA!
Great videos, nice to see all the entry's in the series leading to Res evil 2 remake
Thanks!
Can't wait for your take on RE7. :D Always a pleasure.
It's going to be awesome! So far, it's a 21 minute video. That game gave me a whole lot to talk about.
I actually enjoyed this. I played it through with a friend and it was a blast. I wish more cooperative games existed.
most RE and survival horror games in general are usually games you play alone and get intensely immersed into the story, characters and suspense, like reading a book. I feel like you have to look at the Chronicles rail-shooter series that RE fans can play with our friends and briefly revisit the games we've loved and played over the past decade. I think if you try to measure it up as an installment into the series, you won't appreciate or understand it.
Very surprised you didn't mention the fantastic scores in this game. Takeshi Miura really hit the ball out of the park with the boss themes.
The moment has finally arrived!
Solid vid. I wanna see kendos gun shop do a video of krausers knife
Thanks for the great videos and content matey f'ing brilliant and always retìrn all the best from the north east of England
2:14 I swear I was taken aback over how much better I liked Steve's voice here as oppose to the OG CVX.
You and me both
The nostalgic areas alone are enough to check this out! :D
also it is a shame capcom never mentioned Manuela in future games. like in RE6 had all the bios and stuff. wasted opportunity.
Awesome! Thank U! Great job on both Umbrella games! Cant wait for more RE reviews from u!
Glad you like em!
I cant find a way to support ur work🤔 any link or?
I have a Patreon here www.patreon.com/AvalancheReviews but don't feel like you have to support my stuff financially. Sharing my videos and commenting, does a whole lot too.
Really love this game....definitely in my top Resi games just because it's so fun
Good luck with the Resi7 review
Amazing video! I am so glad you enjoyed this one. My only problems with this game were the shaky cam and how they changed Alexia, but I got used to those lol. This game was really an improvement and you're right, Umbrella Chronicles looks really bad compared to Darkside Chronicles, even the music remixes they used on this sequel were a lot cooler.
I wish they had actually re-created RE3 in UC like they did here with 2 and Code Veronica :(
Yeah, I can understand that. I've always loved CV, but seeing more of Raccoon City's streets, would have been really cool.
Dead spacecextraction its a really good game too
I love darkside it was a big improvement. the only thing I wonder is what happens when you play coop. I always wonder about that since you can sometimes see player two once in a while show up on your screen. I really did like that thought. it gave me a feel that your not alone in a zombie infested environment.
I wondered that same exact thing!! Hey, great minds think alike.
You just see the second character on screen during interludes if I remember correctly. Sometimes it’s P1 and other times it’s P2.
I had a lot of fun playing Umbrella Chronicles so I'll definitely give this one a buy sometime soon.
You definitely should. I had a blast with it.
Anybody else instantly noticed that the suv at Kendo’s gun shop wasn’t correct?
my brother and I played this game a bunch back when it came pit... Really enjoyed it!
0:43
That's got to be on purpose right? Perfect timing! XD
I agree with you completely. This game was amazing. Id love to see it back
I love Rail Shooters and DC is one of the best, also a good zapper accesory with wii motion include controller and all shooters play really smoothly
I never tried it with any of the accessories, but I imagine that would be cool as hell.
My favourite Wii game and still have it
Definitely one of the best on-rail shooters i've ever played. Combat was oddly satisfying
Honestly when Darkside Chronicles came out I loved it! It was an Re2 Remake and a Code Veronica Remake rolled into one (plus an original story), and it was an Re2/CV remake I could play splitscreen with my dad and brother. They're not the best RE Games, but I have so many good memories of playing the Chronicles games
For sure. I liked Darkside a lot.
Just imagine if we got this game on the Switch!
I never had a problem on the Wii controls on either of the Chronicles games or Resident Evil 4, but to each their own.
its so weird I remember playing this, but I dont remember any of the code veronica scenario lol im wondering if I just skipped it because of my love of RE2
One day we need a revival of the Chronicle games with a retelling of RE4. Heck, maybe Ashley is the second character helping Leon fight.
Will you do retrospectives on the revelations RE games? Really enjoy this series being a RE fan myself. Thanks!
Glad you're liking it. In definitely going to be covering the Rev games.
Avalanche Reviews sweet! I'll be looking forward too them :) thanks again!
In some ways, the Resident Evil 2 segment in DC was the remake I was hoping we'd get.
I just so happened to get a PS Move for free recently. Gonna check out Darkside Chronicles today. I played the Wii version several years ago.
Great video
another stellar review and enrty as always jared
Thank you! I appreciate you always watching an commenting.
@@AvalancheReviews been a long time fan, your reviews are both funny and knowledgeable
One thing that is kindda sad is that... Darkside Chronicles, a railshooter is more accurate to the source material than the actual remake of Resident Evil 2.
That fight against Alexia made my hair fall out. Must've tried that more times i'd like to admit.
Definitely would be fun in a Arcane Machine setup.
Great video again dude :)
Thanks!!!
Been waiting for this review. I never played it myself but I was interested in it
Hope these games come out on pc.
Now that would be a really good idea!
This was a fantastic game to the point that I finished it together with my daughter believe or not 😁
I remember getting this game as a kid thinking it was going to play like RE4 and was disappointed that you couldnt even control the characters movement, but I ended up kind of liking the game at the time.
Love playing this on the wii!
I don't even like wii games and this was very fun. It can be really hard, but it's fun.
Great Job!
Thanks!!
Darkside Chronicles was the closest we ever got to a REmake of RE2 and seeing those locations in the same graphical style was a wet dream. Now that a full blow remake of 2 is about to be released, it shows for how long we are waiting for it.
Absolutely!
Can’t wait for the resident evil 7 review, I just got my hands on it. It looks and plays good so far.
I'm trying to make sure it doesn't spoil anything, so you can give it a watch even if you haven't beaten it yet.
Sure, I’m already half way done. Haha
Resident Evil Rail Shooters are like a contestant on American Idol who makes a fool of themselves season after season, then gets vocal lessons and makes it to top 24.
Ha! That's fairly accurate.
I need this
Also, the CERO ratings board in Japan has had a huge negative impact in gaming, and it's kinda ruined games in general coming out of Japan. I miss the days of blood and nudity in Japanese games.
I completely agree. Japan used to be the world's haven for gory games.
