Part of what made the characters feel so consistent prior to RE7 is that like their looks (for the most part), their voices were done in a way that smoothed nicely together. When I first watched Damnation, I couldn't tell that Paul Mercier and Sally Cahill had been replaced by Matt Mercer and Courtenay Taylor respectively. Even when it's fairly obvious like when Roger came on board, he still had that same vocal quality that Chris had in CV, the REmake, and Umbrella Chronicles. Now fast-forward to what they've done with the RE4 remake where you'd have no idea who Leon and Ada were by voice alone.

Honestly with how Ada seems to be more attached and snarky and Leon seems less attached and more business-oriented/serious it seems like their personalities were swapped and the same goes for Claire who was more independent and hard and Jill who was more gentle and cautious. It feels like they were swapped too. Idk how these decisions were made and I'm alright with their changes in some ways but I do miss how they were originally.

Even though Claire was very independent and hard she was also always one of the most gentle and empathetic RE characters to ever exist.
She was just such a nice, heart warming person, and they used to make that VERY clear about her, she was a very cool person even under pressure and had something very warm about her personality and the way she talked to people, she really cares about the people around her, and even against alexia, in her dream she had that became the game "Resident Evil Survivor 2 code veronica", she still took pity on her and didn't let Steve shoot her while she had not attacked yet, saying Alexia was still a human being.

I mean, the Leon/Ada thing I think is a bit more understandable. I mean think about it. On their first meeting, she told him she was an FBI agent looking to expose Umbrella. Was quite cagey until they got to the facility, and then he finds out from an Umbrella researcher that she’s a spy working for the highest bidder. She confirms it when she pulls a gun on him. Yes she hesitates, and yes she tells him to look after himself, but she still did all that before. Not to mention the trauma of the night in general on top of that.
She again proves duplicitous during the Las Plagas incident where she helps him out, still flirts with him and then steals a sample. We know it never makes it to Wesker, but he doesn’t know that. All he knows is that sample will end up on the black market. I know games are meant to be escapism, but I had to admit, when I thought about it, I kind of facepalmed at Leon’s attachment to someone who switches sides on a whim.

Funny thing about original Jill is that she absolutely could kick your ass, which is why I assumed she was so kind, in a world like resident evil you had to able to afford to be kind. She’d rather diffuse the situation before it blew up. She had a good head on her shoulders and had the tactical skills to help her if she was backed into a corner.

All the female chars in the resident evil used to have more of a warm vibe to them, they kept it with Claire mostly in RE2 remake, Jill and Ada had it. Re6 was Peak Ada and I'm worried they'll erase all of her female James Bond persona in any DLC or future campaign missions. Jill is just a mystery but it also makes me wonder what they will do with Sherry Birkin as well.

    • @Polomance862
      @Polomance862 Год назад +32

In some ways, the warm vibe gives away that they are made by Japanese developers. It's known they give their female characters similar aspects. Whether in support or to the detriment of the characters.
Ada having warm eyes is a nice distraction to her real nature of this callous spy with unknown business connections. Hers is a ruse and to shed that in RE4 Remake makes sense to no longer be this warm person. Leon already knows her game, but has leftover unrequited feelings for her.
Jill originally was intended to be half Japanese before she was elected to be fully western. Her backstory was one of intense merit and work, being the first woman to overcome various military groups that got her into STARS. Once she actually engages the horrors of Umbrella and been betrayed; it's easy to see that she adopts a very callous personality and untrusting stance to people that isn't well known to her. I would prefer if she cared about others more, and didn't cuss like a sailor. But I do appreciate her hardened development.
Claire is the only character who I really want to retain the motherly / caretaker image. She went above and beyond to save a child from Raccoon City, and in many of the other appearances usually has her protecting someone else. She's a natural at it, and she ought to retain this higher empathy for other people. While also gaining confidence to overcome obstacles and get to the truth.

Good to see someone made a video on this. Leon honestly changed a lot too but it’s a lot more subtle because they stuck to his core flaw stronger, that being a naive rookie cop. What changed though is the character beats he goes through in his storyline and the development that comes therein. Original Leon insisted on helping cooperating with and protecting Ada, which broke through her steely spy nature and caused her to second guess her motives. This isn’t just enforced through dialogue but also actions and even gameplay like when you can examine Ada’s gun in the A scenario and find it has no bullets left - so she was bluffing when she tried to take the G sample from Leon. This informs us that Leon’s good nature won out on her in the end, and the only way she was going to get that sample was if Leon was a weaker man than she knew him to be.
By contrast remake Leon is a lot less noble. He means well and wants to do his best but he’s a lot more narrow minded and manipulated. He does help Ada but it’s a lot less impactful on the both of them, and his dedication to her is one driven by authority and vengeance because he buys into Ada’s lie about her being FBI wanting to crack down on Umbrella. As a result Leon in the remakes is just a much less noble minded and idealistic guy. He and his original self sort of represent two ways that someone with naive idealistic perspectives of justice can go: they either do their best to live up to the ideals despite the problems of reality, or they become disillusioned by them.

This is a strange analogy, but I consider the remakes of RE2-4 like the remakes of Disney movies: the original is the "canon characterizion" that will always be referenced and marketed at the end of the day. When you go to the Disney theme parks to meet the characters, you expect to see the original cartoon version, not the live action remake one. The Jill (double timeline) situation is akin to effectively overwriting the original characterization and in a way alienating those who fell in love with that character. It's a weird situation when it comes to remakes and adapted media. It would be like if Nintendo started using the Mario movie Peach in their games instead of the same Peach they've been using for the past 20 years.

I haven't played the new games. But from what I've seen. New Jill is VERY westernized. Loud, mean, foul-mouthed, masculine, toxic, crude, no compassion or empathy, just an overall insufferable character.

I don't know maybe I'm crazy but lately it feels like female characters specifically, are not allowed to be anything other than this stoic, "badass", inoffensive avatar instead of actual characters with depth and emotions. It feels particularly prevalent in western media but other regions are definitely not without fault. I applaud the attempts to give women, which are often less popular unfortunately, more prominence but the way many creatives are going about it feels regressive and not progressive. It feels like every company's solution to this problem is to almost erase any sort of trait that could be seen as "soft" or "offensive to male sensibilities" and to replace it with "strong" traits which ultimately results in this cycle of characters from completely separate franchises feeling interchangeable and homogenous.

You really hit the nail on the head with these issues. The characterizations are all over the place because of the original timeline and this remake timeline that’s not it’s own timeline but has such stark differences with the characters personalities it may as well be? So you have characters continuing from the other CGI movies that predate all the remakes, and new characters that are appearing in the movies after the remakes, so it’s this weird cobbled together ensemble of RE characters.
It’s also not stupid to be annoyed about Jill’s hair. These are important life altering things that have happened to Jill, and they’re being ignored because Capcom has recency bias and doesn’t trust the audience to be educated on these characters stories. Watch there be a throw away line of Jill saying she died her hair back to brown or something. Ugh.

one of the main things that sold R.E. was how the charecters were and how they acted. if everyone and everything happened the way a normal person woud then it would just be stale, boring, and lack anything other than basic setting, and basic setting is basically nothing but the skin of an apple keeping all slices together (I.E. held together by almost nothing and holding almost nothing inside to chew on). The biggest problem with mordern capcom is that they throw away anything unique and intresting about a charecter to build more of a basic nobody who is beyond overly dramatic to the point where it looks a stupid parody than anything else or feed the rampent depression simulator craze that modern games/medic are trying to mass produce for some stupid reason. Impressed to see the amount of enthusiasm and effort put into this vid, as a '96 RE vet I salute you.
Regarding Jill's characterization, I know your vid is at least a tad tongue-in-cheek, but I think something to consider is that taking in the entirety of the franchise, Capcom's actual storytelling has never been much better than mediocre, and I am pretty firmly convinced that they don't care all that much about their actual characters beyond their marketability(I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they're confused by the amount of investment players have in their portrayals). The modern remakes are largely celebrated, and for good reason, but the writing in all of them reeks of pretensions of writers that are very convinced of how adept they are, profanity and such is thrown in willy nilly to tell everyone this is for ADULTS, dammit, we are GROWNUPS making this SERIOUS video game. If it was contributing to the stories being told in some way I wouldn't even notice it, but it stands out because of how amateurish it comes off to me.
Main point being that for better and worse these games have never had solid story and characters at their core, no matter how fond we are of them or their adventures. I don't expect the legacy characters to get consistent quality treatment unless Capcom lays another egg like RE6 and forces them to really rethink what they're doing with the series.

Yeah, you're right about Capcom just not caring (and understandably so), and about the remakes having a more grating 'edgy' tone compared to the cheesiness of the originals. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever be able to capture the tone of the older games because the cultural zeitgeist - the audience and creators - have both moved on.

Honestly feel the same players are able to tell the difference between two timelines for the characters at least long term players. There always going to be a divide between those who like only the remakes and those who hold the originals as better and then those who can appreciate both. Other games had pulled off having different variants of characters no problem for having different timelines. Even the animated films give whiplash on tone and character when watch them by suppose timelines whether then release. All this to say I miss the goofy/camp, nothing wrong with the more serious tone but where's the goofy.

Agree, remake characters are not original characters, and that's why all is going to sh*t. If Resident Evil was being launched today as if the Remakes where the only ones, it would not make the success it did.
Leon, Chris, Jill, Claire and Ada were unique, full of personality, and charismatic. These new ones are nothing but generic people of the 21st century, in the worst way possible.
What Jill, Claire, and Ada all had it was taken for them is their femininity. This is the most forbidden characteristic for a woman in the 2020s.
I grew up playing Resident Evil, almost literally the game was first launched in 1996, I was born in 1999, and what was so captivating about it was the story and its characters. These five protagonists were the personification of heros. Chris and Leon were masculine; they were protectors and it didn't matter what it took, they would save everyone within their reach and beyond. Jill, Claire, and Ada were feminine, kind, nurturing, and saved everyone within their reach and beyond. The men in their masculine way and the women in their feminine way, they complemented each other.
It was wonderful to grow up with great examples of femininity. The remakes killed this. They completely and utterly destroyed these wonderful characters just to please this pathetic generation that can't do anything without being offended.
This "new Jill" that curses and screams; this "new Claire" that curses and screams; this "new Ada" with no life behind her eyes; any of this "new" women are written as women, they are 'wanna be men', the absolute worst thing any women can be. The original ones were full of life and unique personalities and showed all their power and femininity.
Jill's melee attacks in RE 5 were the coolest things, kicking big monsters around was amazing. It suited Jill character perfectly. Claire was always a civilian that could kick ass when necessary thanks to her brother's teaching, what made her wonderful and lovely. Ada, Ada was the queen of feminine fighting, using a red dress and high heels just made her more awesome (don't come bother me with all the "realistic attire" nonsense, we killing zombies here, it has to be done in a red dress and heels, it just has - look it's a video game, not real life, the dress was perfect and should have remained that way).
Leon was castrated in RE2REMAKE just to make Ada and Claire "eMPoWerEd WoMuHn". And he continued to be castrated in RE4REMAKE for the same purpose, only this time is Ashley instead of Claire.
The Remakes are not good, and is a shame that Jill seems to be her Remake version in this movie.

My issue with Jill in RE3 Remake, and in Deaths Island, is that the way they now portray her, she's essentially just a Female version of Chris Redfield. She comes off as not exactly a "badass" but another word that starts with a B. They way she carries herself in RE3R is not exactly how Jill carried herself in RE1, RE3 Nemesis, and RE Revelations. Like you said, she emanated this caring and softer side that would occasionally shine through and in RE3R she just comes off a cold, bitchy, and stuck-up and she also came off that way in Death Island.

Coming to this video after seeing it in my recommendations for a while and viewing some clips from death island. As a RE fan and while i havent played all of the games Jill is in, i have played re 1, 5, and revalations. So when i saw her in the clips i was like "what happened?" Especially in the gun range thing where Chris is talking to her about being numb and what she dod was reckless and just in general opening up to her. She has to go like "fuck you, im going to prove your point by totally ignoring you and totally not acting like we care about each other despite our chemistry throughout the whole series." Like seriously, Chris, your damn parter. The guy who literally obsessed about you and mourned for you in RE5 opens up to you about what happened in 6 and you just brush it off because you are so busy wanting to continue being a badass. God i love modern writing. Arent they actually married? I could have sworn i read somewhere that after the events of 5 they got together and Jill to a back seat to front line fighting in the BSAA. I am so glad I am not the only one who thinks Resident Evil 3 remake Jill is not the same. I first found out who Jill Valentine was by playing Resident Evil Revelations, and I loved her she was kind strong fair and her bond with Chris was so sweet. I next saw Jill in resident Evil 5 and the original model for Jill it sucked that she was not in the main story for Resident Evil 5 as a playable character I was hoping to see more of Chris and Jill together in a game she only got a tiny part in Resident evil 5 game. But her bond with Chris was strong, and you could see just how much they really cared for each other. And Jill was so sweet and her normal nice self.I was so excited to see her in her next game to be made. Then Resident Evil 3 Remake came out and Death Island, And it left me angry how they could change her so much and use a different model. Her bond with Chris was way off and off in Death Island, and her reckless behaviour, not Jill. Her constant swearing, not Jill and her bad ass attitude was way over the top and her look no was nothing like Jill. How can they just make a completely new Jill and change her personality. The original Jill will be replaced now with the new one.The only thing they got right about the new Jill was she always smells bad smells in the game. They should of given a choice to play as the original model, Jill, or replaced Jill.

I don't see remake claire that way at all. They gave her a much more motherly quality to strengthen the bond between her and sherry because it's essential to her playthrough, but she's fresh faced and sweeter because it's the very beginning of her story, same as leon. She still has some EXTREMELY badass moments in re2 remake and I can absolutely see her growing into the person that she is in code veronica. I don't think people give claire nearly enough credit for being a normal college student with no military or scientific background, who absolutely fucks up a mutated william birkin and does everything in her power to save a little girl she just met. She is badass, being sweet doesn't take away from that. If we can afford re2 Leon that perspective why does the same not go for her?

If Capcom wants to reboot the franchise. Then they need to start with the first game, using the new look, voice and personality of Jill. But I highly doubt that's going to happen. I guess fans are just going to have to accept the confusing state of the franchise. In other words, Jill must've had some facial reconstructive surgery, dyed her hair, and got a haircut, after the events of re6. In defense of Jill's outfit in film. Her, Jill and Claire are supposed to be sort of undercover as tourists at Alcatraz. So it makes sense for her to be in plain clothes. However they've could've gone with something different other than a tank top.

Capcom does this so much, it’s tiring as a fan of the series. Leon from og RE4 to Degeneration felt like he had matured. But then he became a jokester in Damnation, a mature guy again for RE6 and, finally, a murderer of civilians in Vendetta. Jill is especially frustrating because she had such a great setup coming out of RE5 but they butchered it and in a crappy, fan-service film, of all things. Feels like like we can’t get behind these characters because they won’t even be the same character by the next entry in the franchise.

Remake 2, 3, and 4 also fit into this reboot time-line. That'd be my favored explanation for these inconsistencies. And I'm OK with Capcom taking these liberties, tbh. The RE series has been around for a long time and it needs a new coat of paint to continue being relevant.

But Jill is smart and dedicated to justice. In the situation where she had Nicholai dead to rights and he was willing to make a deal to give evidence against Umbrella the Jill Valentine I grew up with would have brought him into the Helicopter handcuffed him and bring him in.
She would know Nicholai was scum but getting him to flip and testify could mean getting the big wigs in umbrella arrested, people who empower people like Nicholai by the dozens daily
……that’s not what we get in R3make though we get a smug vindictive character who would rather watch Nicholai die then use him to go after the real culprits of raccoon city

I think Leon is basically the same as originally re4 original was his outlier since in re2 it makes sense for him to be baby face and kiddy and then re4 is just super campy and then re6 he is a grizzled hero kind of vibe and it seems they are keeping that as his vibe overall which i enjoy as it still allows for quips and makes more sense to go from re4r to re6 rather than re4 to re6. I also think Chris is thankfully also given the same treatment as re8 seems to have kept him similar to the chris we know keeping him prepared and a boy scout rather than making him new jill which is just kind of a angry quipy barking kind of girl. Claire also seems to be a perfectly fine twist as she seems to still be relatively similar and it could be assumed she has changed a lot from re2 to modern claire as this is like 20 years or so now plus i think they knew they could get away with making her more original as remake version wasn't all that loved to the point where we all wanted it back and then yeah i agree they are messing up best girl jill a lot more. I really liked her modernization and i think making her basically dressed like original while also still keeping that same attitude from remake then i think it would be a good blend rather than just making her literally just more or less re3r jill with no changes not even in fucking clothes.

Watching Chris call Jill - literally - reckless and lecturing her was one of the most insulting things Capcom has ever done. Jill was supposed to have more emotional intelligence than all of the STARS since she was a bomb disposal, being calm and emotionally intelligent were pre-requisites of her job. Especially compared to Chris who used to be a insubordinate badboy in his youth. It was a major role reversal that make no sense at all.
Jill's trauma wasn't about not saving enough people, she always did it to the extent possible. But rather not having control over her own actions and hurting innocent people. Her behavior in the movie is just unjustified and an insulting attempt of capcom to welcome newcomer RE3 remake fans. Absolutely nothing more than that.
I go beyond that. Capcom seems to use the same ready-made tamplate for all female characters from REV2 onwards. Same one-sided tough woman thing. Just change the name and sometimes the outfit, just like the less talented western hollywood writers do. For these and other reasons, I always thought Japanese writers were more talented with women. But clearly something has changed in capcom's office.
Tha sadly part is to see fans desperate to defend the company new code of conduct just to ensure the next product's existence, even if it means their complete lack of conection with the previous one or dignity.

@Raydhen And to add to what you say there Raydhen, when Ripley does finally say "you bitch" it's impactful because Ripley hasn't been dropping f bombs and other curses left and right. If she was saying that kind of stuff all the time, then when she does say that line, one would think "well that's just Ripley cursing out an enemy like she always does." But instead you can hear the intensity and the fact that she is fed up in dealing with the aliens as well as the fact that she won't tolerate the queen getting near Newt. When you do finally hear Ripley speak like that it stands out and makes you go "Whoa, she means business now". There need to be moments that are picked for those instances to have a bigger impact. Not just throw foul language all over the place, because then it becomes diluted and annoying.

I could not agree more about some of the characters in these remakes. Jill especially. It's like the difference between Ripley from Aliens and Sarah Conner from Terminator. Both James Cameron action movies, both total badasses, but they are very different. Ripley is warm and kind to those she loves and hella distrustful to most other people, and for good reason. Sarah Conner, on the other hand, is all about the mission. She's a terrible mother and a total warrior, and after all her experiences, who can blame her? Both very well done characters, but totally different. That's how Jill is to me.
As far as RE4R, I agree as well, with the exception being Ashley. I don't mind changing a character if it's an overall net improvement, and she absolutely is. While Luis is technically in the same boat, it comes at a cost, that being Ada. Luis's presence being beefed up is great, until you realize he is just vampiring so much of her screen time and even a key scene or two. I would rather have Ada than Luis, personally, as I adored flirty Ada. New Ada is so dry that her attempts to flirt come off as genuine insults. Also doesn't help that she's been literally reduced to a non-entity in this version, but hopefully her campaign will fix that.
But Ada, Saddler, and Krauser have been done so damn dirty it makes me want to scream, and I absolutely do not understand the choices with them, it's outright baffling.
Also... I just miss Julia Voth. This new face for Jill is cute, but Julia Voth IS Jill. She has been since 2002, 20 freaking years. That's like replacing Luke Skywalkers face, and not to open THAT can of worms, but at least Disney tries to keep Luke's face consistent with Mark Hamil. Capcom has been so hit or miss lately, and the new fanboys just go crazy when you point out the chips in their perfect veneer. Or rant for way too long, like me.

I was genuinely shocked when I saw the trailer for the new movie. The fact that it looks like they just ripped her model from RE3make and made absolutely no effort to make her look like she's aged, or reflect any of the changes she went through in the 20ish years since RE3 is honestly kind of ridiculous. I wish they had given her some scarring on her chest, where the device Wesker used to mind control her was, and maybe show her using hair dye to cover up her blonde hair. Maybe even make her clothing choices directly attempting to cover up her scar, just ANY visual reflection of the psychological trauma they are saying she's going though. Also personally, I am just not a fan of the direction or the portrayal of Jill in RE3make, it just feels like they took her and made her a generic independent character type. I'm sure the Voice Actress is fine, it really is just the script and the direction I had a problem with, she just seems so mean and pissed off for most of the game.

There's a bit too much "overhaul" in their redesigns to modernize and invent something new but without actually improving it, in most cases. Claire's outfit also being an example. It's like they're thinking "what would every day people be wearing in a zombie apocalypse?" while forgetting these characters are not supposed to be every day people...
I definitely swapped to the OG dress for my 2nd Separate Ways play through! lol

Yeah I'm always going to be a proponent of RE1 Remaster Jill. It's almost as if they swapped some character traits around between Jill and Claire, but also added additional elements, new-Jill being a bit more "bitchy", and new-Claire being a bit more naive and empathetic.

Ill weigh in on this too. older Jill appearances were more or less cut from the same cloth, you knew what you were getting and knew what to expect. it wasnt until the stunning and brave latest design where the trouble started for her. Re 5 space ninja Jill was different but when she regained herself she was that same Jill we knew and was basically her Revelations version before the blond hair dye. The flux for the new Jill is because shes all over the place. In 3 remake she was up down up down like someone who had a drug problem going through withdraw. now from previews of the film shes mellow. As a leading lady of the series she really should have been handled better. If you want a loud bemoaning b*tch in boots casting, just make someone new for the plot.

Now RE3 Remakes Jill never liked her . Felt too forced with the trash talk and the badass female trope. And with Death Island I wasn’t thrilled to see again the same RE3Remake Jill. Was looking forward to seeing atleast her revelations version.

My biggest gripe is Capcom's refusal to age their women protagonists. At least with remake Claire they have room to grow, but in general, Jill, Claire, and Rebecca don't look any older than their original appearances despite this movie taking place 20ish years later. They should all be in their 40s. Just let them age darnit. And don't give me that "their aging got affected when they were infected" bologna. At least Chris and Leon have slightly aged with time.

Is it so much to ask that the character design evolve to show the age and experience of the character? I think Village Chris is the best example of that kind of aging and character growth. Whether you're a fan of the design or not, it at least shows some kind of change.

Lol that's the first thing that I noticed while watching Dead Island. Unlike the RE remakes, this movie is set in 2015, but all the women still look identical (age-wise) to how they looked in 1998 lol. Capcom are probably afraid some of the younger/immature fans would kick up a fuss about their "waifus" having a few wrinkles.
Other than that, I honestly don't have a problem with the updated versions of the characters, if Capcom want to replace old versions of characters with their updated counterparts in all RE media from now on, that's fine by me. But at least make it consistent. The decision to mix old Leon (Matt Mercer) with new Jill (Nicole Tompkins), makes absolutely no sense, other than 100% fan service. And even more baffling thing is that they used the new Leon (Nick Apostolides) in the last RE animation, Infinite Darkness. Why not bring him back, to have some consistency?

Completely agree! Different doesn't necessarily mean 'bad' but when you make huge changes to core characters in remakes and then try and establish ALL of the games as cannon, you will run into big problems.
Changing Ada and Jill is no problem if they're just limited to one remake... It can actually work better as a matter of fact! (Take Ashley in the RE4 remake for example) but it's obvious these new characters are now being treated as the default (probably for marketing) and it's damaging to how the originals were intended to be written.

My fear is that they're completely gonna scrach the original games and their plot and character development and replace them with the remake and make it the new "canon". Also they explained that Jill still looks young because the experiments Wesker did made her age very slow apparently, but to me that doesn't explain why she looks completely like in RE3 Remake and even got the old haird and clothes back. 😂
