Thank you for the video! Going to change the ps pump on my 2011 I gave my grandparents tomorrow. I feel more confident about it now. I'll be buying a new pulley along with the pump so hopefully I wont have the headache of getting the pulley off!
For some reason Ford changed the code to P7B in 2010. I only know because I was looking at the vin on mine and I couldn't figure out why it said P7B and not P71 until I looked it up.
Thanks for the video, I have a feeling I'm going to have to do this on my 06 Grand Marquis soon. Stiffness at low speeds, pressure switch seems to be working (bumps up RPM at idle), fluid is clean, just the slightest whine at low speed turning.. I'm going to take to my mechanic to diagnose to make sure it isn't the rack but I usually try to do the repairs myself.
I did have a bad power steering pump, nothing was flowing in/out, after replacement it was still not working well. Whoever did the Air spring to coil spring conversion on the Merc before I had it had unplugged the wiring harness to the air suspension control module not realizing it also controls the variable assist power steering. After plugging it back in it steered fine, very smooth. I did get a "check air suspension" alert on startup but after looking the wiring diagram for the air suspension/pwr steering control module if you cut the one for alert display (pin 11 dark green with light green stripe) it will get rid of the suspension message. I would check to see anything is unplugged from the control module first if I were you its located behind the glove compartment.
My friend's pump was making noise the other night and I used regular steering fluid to refill it. Still has an issue, as another friend refilled it for her again and noticed it leaking on the ground. He also used steering fluid, lol. At least the wrong fluid has all leaked out. Thanks for the video and information.
I really only need to replace the hose. I suspect it's leaking because of the Teflon bushing. What size is the nut connecting the line and what is the easiest way to disconnect it while the pump is mounted?
Few questions. Will this work on a 95 grand marquis? How much fluid in total do you use? Do you turn the steering wheel while draining the fluid to drain it all out? Any tips or tricks you might think would help? First Time doing this. I'm 17 and an aspiring mechanic, so the last few years I've been trying to pick up as much as possible! Thanks! Sorry, I just saw this. The 95 should be similar. I have a 2000 that has a steering box not a rack. The pump looks the same, but the fluid i think is different. Make sure you fallow what is recommended as far as fluid.
I got the pump off without taking the pulley off. found a way on accident. when it pissed me off . take all bolts out but the hard one. you know which it is then slightly twist your pump down enough to get an 18 on the hose nut. take it off the the 10 bolt comes out all the way
Brian you seem to know the engine drivetrain very well .Is that because you've learnt as you went or were you a technician. Which ever you were professional or hobbyist you produced another well made informative video, a pleasure to watch in fact As I said I don't own a Crown Vic but since the last video I watched of yours I've found an export /import company who specialize in American car importation So I still may be able to buy one If anyone else can offer me any advice on buying a Crown Vic I would greatly appreciate it Particularly parts that wear /break often so I can have them sent over with the car Thanks Daz UK
Sorry, I just saw this. It all depends on milage. I would look for low milage newer than 2006, if I could. (60k miles) At 100kish water pump. 120kish ignition coils. New plugs no matter what. 170 rebuilt trans if it was used hard. 130 brakes. 120 oil cooler lines if it is a p71. 170 power steering. 160 fuel pump. These milages are assumptions as worst case. Some go above 200k with no issue. There were several cars in the uk that used the 4.6 ford engine, MG ZT 260 and Rover 75 V8. So you might be able to get engine and transmission parts.

2003 is the year the switch to rack and pinion steering was made, not 2004 and the cars were available starting in Feb. 2002. Corresponds with the release of the Mercury Marauder.

Brad Johnson did you get yours diagnosed mine is the exact same as yours and doing the same.

My fluid loss was as a result of the power steering cooler, which due to fluid loss seized my pump.

Why didn't you just replace the whole unit(pump and pulley)? They cost another $30, and save you a whole ton of grief.
