Thank you Chris Fix. You saved me a couple of days without a car and $310 bucks, thinking it was a bad power steering pump. It was just low fluid. Decided to change out the fluid rather then add more. Thanks again.
I would definitely recommend to do the rear subframe reinforcement before that race. Those models had thin metal holding the subframe in. They make kits to weld in to stop it from cracking, tearing, ect.
I just want to thank you for being here on this Earth. You are Teaching me a lot of things and is giving me the potential to be a mechanic in the future and is pushing me not to give up. Thanks again, Keep the videos coming much love and God Bless You 🙏🏾.
You make working on cars look so much more fun than the experience I’ve had, probably cuz I’m always working with my dad. He’s worked on cars his entire life but he’s gotten sick of it so he gets pretty grumpy anytime he has to take something apart rather than a quick service. Perhaps it’s just his attitude that changes the experience.
It is. I don't have my own car but everytime i fix a car in cms i'm grumpy if i have been doing it for like the past 3 hours but when i boot the game up for the first time in a while i'm always excited
Even though he didn’t had to, he tries to take the wheel off without destroying it. That’s what that differs ChrisFix from any other “do it yourself guy” on RUclips. His attention to details would have made me comfortable working on my own car if I had one.

Dear Chris. I'm amazed at how well you can explain everything down to the last detail. You show everything razor sharp on video so that everyone can see it well and really learn something from it. Precisely because you explain so well without errors, your videos are nice to watch until the end. Thanks Chris keep it up.
Next time when you’re bleeding the power steering fluid raise the front wheels off the ground. It makes turning the wheel a lot easier and is better on the new pump
Or drive the car (carefully ofc) if you don't have a way to lift both wheels at the same time, it will also be a bit easier to steer and won't damage your driveway (if the car in on the ground) or risk moving the ramps.
best is with the wheels completely off the ground. Then if you can't do second best that being an empty lot so the car is moving when you torque on the steering wheel, you can use dish soap on the steel ramps.
One other thing, you should also allow the pump to get filled with some fluid before u start the car. Otherwise, if you can damage the new pump as it heats up, even with the turning if the wheels. For example, before tightening the high pressure line, allow gravity to pull fluid downwards. As soon as you see fluid dripping out of the high pressure fitting, then you can tighten to spec.. Cool video!!
Chris goes to great lengths to make his projects accessible, using the simplest tools and methods whenever possible. The fact that he does his projects on an imperfect, aged residential driveway, and not in a shop with smooth epoxy floor a lift and 50,000 watts of flourescent lighting, is an extension of that same spirit of accessibility and achievability. Chris is smart not to upgrade himself out of an audience.
@@chrisfix Yep,if you don't know you can learn, but sadly the biggest problem (for me at least) is that i have no where to repair my car,no garage,no lawn (i am not in my home country where i have so much space) in the Netherlands as far as i know its not legal to work on your car when on the street :(
I see that you used synthetic power steering fluid. BMW recommends using an automatic transmission oil. It even says so on top of the reservoir: "atf oil only". Is there any difference in those fluids?
I spoke to PEAK about this and they said that their fluid is the same as ATF but it has anti-foaming additives to prevent cavitation which is what probably caused this pump to fail. They also said their fluid meets/exceeds bmws specs. That’s why I used it. I always like to use the correct stuff so I decided to use my contacts to make a call! Great question!
@@chrisfix I know on older BMW's somewhere it states that "Use Castrol Oil Only". I do recommend using Castrol oil and the specs that they were ment to be only on BMW's. BMW's are little bit delicate when it comes to using upgraded oil specs. Was a big difference with the e46 316i when workshop swapped from BMW spec Castrol oil to unknown spec Motul Oil. Engine sounds more rough now. BTW Love the channel, everytime i need to do something on my car I check if you have a video about it, so I know what I am getting myself into :D
Imprint on the reservoir: Use ATF only. ChrisFix: nah, I’m gonna put some shady European full synthetic power steering fluid in. Also: when you bleed the pump, you actually don’t want to have your wheels on the ground. Makes turning easier and your steering components will thank you.
Actually in E46 all you need to do is step on the gas, and then the pump will prime itself and start to circulate. No need to wrestle it left to right like that.
This is awesome, I watched this video years ago but recently bought a $400 325ci 2003 that has no power steering, went to watch your video on how to do the pump and happened to be a fellow e46 so same parts/bolts, just minor differences.

Hey Chris, many thanks for this and a lot of great videos, saved me a lot $$$, stopped going to the mech, except for heavy stuff and lift, you really helped me get my 92 Crown Vic P71 Interceptor back in great shape. Retired DOD occasionally driven. The last video you saved me big was replacing the odometer gears, was told I could only get a whole odometer. You've encouraged me to keep it up and well maintained. Peace Bro, Good health and safety to your family and friends.
Oh you're not gonna believe this. I got a Jersey bred E-36 with a high pressure hose leak and I've been dillydallying about replacing that line, even thought I've had the part in the garage for over a year. What are da odds we're both working on virtually the same system.... Go figure. Excellent video, and get cracking on more factory videos like the NRS brake pad build. Beats me going to Canada, since my last factory visit was 1956 to the GM assembly plant in Linden, NJ (long gone now). NRS is on my list for all my replacement work now.
21:35 When I was young we didn't have power steering but the steering wheels are designed so you can turn the wheel easier than the modern versions like this one.
Something I've never had to do, and don't have to currently. But if I ever have to, I feel confident I could after watching. I imagine a lot of mechanic garages must feel like you're giving away all their secrets with your easy to follow diy videos. Makes a lot of work seem much less intimidating!
As always nice video, well made, and simply explained! The only thing you might want to consider are self tightening springy hose clamps (don't know if there's a actual name for those) as screwing type clamps don't account for temperature changes during engine operation and different times of the year ...

hi Chris :)
That instant smoothness of the steering after several hard times trying to pump the fluid, was satisfying enough!
This video got clicked faster than Arnold Schwarzenegger's torque wrench.

Next time when you’re bleeding the power steering fluid raise the front wheels off the ground. It makes turning the wheel a lot easier and is better on the new pump
Exactly.
Or drive the car (carefully ofc) if you don't have a way to lift both wheels at the same time, it will also be a bit easier to steer and won't damage your driveway (if the car in on the ground) or risk moving the ramps.
Totally could do that. Wasnt worth the time and effort to get the jack and jack stands out.
best is with the wheels completely off the ground.
Someone start a go fund me so chris can get his drive way paved

Chris goes to great lengths to make his projects accessible, using the simplest tools and methods whenever possible. The fact that he does his projects on an imperfect, aged residential driveway, and not in a shop with smooth epoxy floor a lift and 50,000 watts of flourescent lighting, is an extension of that same spirit of accessibility and achievability. Chris is smart not to upgrade himself out of an audience.

@@chrisfix Yep,if you don't know you can learn, but sadly the biggest problem (for me at least) is that i have no where to repair my car,no garage,no lawn (i am not in my home country where i have so much space) in the Netherlands as far as i know its not legal to work on your car when on the street :(
Lol! This! My favorite is the rusty bolts... 5 seconds in the video... 45 minutes and skinned knuckles in real life

Yay, another video on the lemon race

The only thing you might want to consider are self tightening springy hose clamps (don't know if there's a actual name for those) as screwing type clamps don't account for temperature changes during engine operation and different times of the year ...
