This is legitimately one of the best car videos I've ever watched. The diagnostic process was so clearly laid out, especially the part about diagnosing head gasket leaks (I LOVE IT when people are able to break down a complex problem into individual troubleshooting components)
Brilliant. What a joy to see someone who can speak clearly, hold a camera in position, focus, edit and just really plan and deliver a classy and informative product. A little poignant for me as I had a lovely E39 528i - a couple of years older than this one but maybe cleaner. Started overheating. Had a bit of work done in one garage which cured it for a while. Overheated again and I left it at another place but he could never seem to get to it. Took it back home and went through some of the steps in the video. No oil in water, no combustion gas in water. Between first garage and home the radiator, water pump, thermostat etc. were replaced. Ultimately to no avail. Suspect some (many?) head studs were pulling from the block even though no detectable intermixing of gas/fluids. Diagnosis based on fact that it would run OK until warmed up then all hell would break loose. Now, the big problem was that I had sold the house and was working in a different city. So, the dear old thing went away on the back of a truck to who knows what fate. I can still smell the leather interior and hear that straight six twin-cam growl in my mind. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have time, tools and space aplenty to keep her on the road.
I think the cooling system was not correctly bled in your car. Early E39 with M52 engines are quite difficult to bleed all the air out of the cooling system..
the level of professionality with which you operate and cut your videos together is beyond anything i have ever experienced before. never seen the channel before, instant sub.
I just found you a few months ago to help me start detailing headlights, thought I had missed out on the last 5 hears. Lo and behold… RETURN OF THE KING!
After watching many videos on restoring old cars to perfect condition, this is the first video that is very well done. You have a thorough understanding of the car's operating system and have learned how to test it with special tools. I would like to commend you for being a top-notch professional mechanic.
As a previous owner of a 525i (2001) I just loved this video. The greatest car I ever owned, but had to sell when I emigrated. Mine still had original battery, but perished hoses to the oil vapor recycling unit, crankcase oil seal was leaking and a pin hole leak in the radiator - not the metal part but the plastic-. Like seeing an old friend being revived.
i had a 98' 528i, those cars feel solid. even a small thing like the turning signal on felt very heavy and gave you a nice feeling of strong long lasting quality.
THIS IS THE BEST DIY CHANNEL I HAVE SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE….(and yes I am subscribed to M539) like I feel like shedding a tear as to how good this is! Doesn’t care about chasing clout or popularity! JUST THE BUSINESS OF FIXING CARS and EDUCATING US ABOUT HOW CARS WORK! I am an INSTANT FAN FOR EVER!
As I'm retired now " 86" I pass my days on my iPad looking at anything that catches my fancy . Your video on the BMW 5. Is without doubt the best I've ever seen . There is nothing left out as to how to repair the engine . It's too late for me to make use of the information but I will share it with my friends on u tube . It really is a missed opportunity for me . ( where were you when I needed you ) . I wish you all the very best with this venture . I'm Irish , born & bred & living in Dublin .
The very best, most concise and easy to listen to advice/ instructions of working on a BMW I have ever seen. The guy is so confident and tells us amateurs EXACTLY how to carry out each stage of the work. Please keep the videos coming You are a top,top mechanic. Watching this gives me confidence that I can do these jobs. Very well done sir.
Wow, I have never seen your channel before. I am so impressed with your skills, and no bs, everything clearly shown, video quality is top. I hope you never quit doing this, its the passion holding everything alive.
I have the same car but diesel, 525 tds. it falls to pieces. I bought it with great enthusiasm, here in Uruguay any piece costs a lot to get. The mechanics don't put much effort into it. I wish there was someone around these parts with such knowledge. So professional. With that natural talent. Totally surprised with your work. The best educational video. My God, how nice to see it. Greetings and best wishes.
This has got to be the best, most informative, most well explained automotive video I have ever seen. Been DIY-ing my cars for 25 years and I really learned a lot from this video. Thank you for posting this.
Wow. What a contrast to other car restorer RUclipsrs. No drama. No whining about the work that needs to be done. Excellent production values, and very economical video editing. Nice!
The misfire diagnostic and the way you found that it was a vacuum leak is mind blowing. I wish one day I develop knowledge like this and apply it to my cars. Awesome job.
As a bimmer enthusiast (as an owner at various times an E36, E46, E90, G20 sorry about the last one), I was attracted to your channel by the "$100k-$725" caption, simply to see what you found, for the next 30:40, I never blinked. I agree with my fellow viewers that this is simply the most informative, most technically-brilliant and well-presented car restoration channel I've come across, nevermind the bs they have on network channels which disguise/rip off car "beautification" with "restoration". I know you don't even need to advertise it, but I'll defo CLS your channel. Oh, only one tiny suggestion, if you add "E39 530i" to your caption, you might increase your viewing figures substantially. Hats off to you, bro.
I've watched a few handfuls of car restoration videos, but by far, you are the best. Not only did you diagnose step-by-step, but also shared the total price. Totally out of this realm. First time watching your video, but I'm going to watch all of your past videos waiting for the next one!
Dude, that's the best DIY video I've ever seen! I'm a huge fan of Streten, but your video has something special that I can't quite put into words. It's like you have a way of making the video so engaging that I don't want it to end. And your teaching style is so calming and easy to follow. Please keep making these videos!
I usually don't comment videos, but i have to now. I take my hat off to this guy, for being so knowledgeable but also willing to spend his time explaingin carefully his reasoning. It makes everything look so simple. Pure class. Congrats, sir!
This car is so easy to work on, you just need to disassemble the international space station every time you want to change something. It did make up for a good warch and we learned a lot from the video, so thanks a bunch.
Genuinely the most informative video I’ve seen on RUclips about fixing a car. Particularly liked the part where you were talking about the various levels required on your scan tool. No one does that, so thank you.
This the first video of yours that I've seen and wow. Just wow. The level of quality of the explanations, the patience and the ease in how you repaired that car blew me away. I didn't even hesitate to subscribe and i hope you keep these videos going.
This is the 1st video of yours that I've seen and let me say that you are a GREAT troubleshooter! An art that is fading away with "scanners" and people that are "parts changer". You got yourself another Subscriber.
This video was awesome. Very well edited, with tons of insights and tips like the smoke test, leak tests, calculating air flow, pulling the fuel pump fuse, etc. Really appreciated the extra mile of including the pulled engine to show the head gasket, and the editing to speed up certain portions while still keeping them to make sure you show every step is appreciated (removing & replacing all 6 ignition coils). Thanks for the great content!
When you start diagnosing the head gasket, you get the new subscriber. Dude, I wish you had opened a shop around me. This kind of mechanic is exactly what I would rely for my cars.
we always hear to stay away from the german brands due to expense of maintaining after warranty but you made it look so easy. The cost of water pump is practically nothing!
German brands can still be esoteric to mechanics, at least here in the US. Different yes, hence the reputation. Bad engineering, no. Too much plastic under the hood, yes, as is the case with every contemporary car.
@@ProjectFairmont The amount of plastic on that engine in a car with a 100k price tag is a crazy. I am afraid to look the amount they would charge to swap out the plastic for metal parts.
This is a really well made video : Great filming, lighting, editing and voiceover commentary. You covered so many issues typical of old BMWs. Excellent overall ! I have a 2002 525i e39 and had a misfiring problem. I did everything you did. Replaced so many parts only to eventually find that the cause of the misfire was clogged catalytic converters. Replaced them and it's running like new now ! Wish I had seen your video before.

holy mother of underrated mechanics... your diagnosis skills are beyond impressive good work man seriously. you make it seem like owning a bmw is nothing
I'm experiencing some major 2nd hand satisfaction watching you expertly diagnose and restore one of the prettiest BMW sedans. Your animations and editing are really great too. If I were trying to show someone the ropes in fixing cars, I'd show them this video first. You cover an immense amount of automotive theory without being boring or long-winded. That DIY smoke tester blew my mind. I'll add that vapes can also be used to do a ghetto smoke test, just don't bother unless you're already addicted to it it like I was.
It is wonderful to watch someone so systematically and intelligently approach restoring this beautiful car to original condition, I am guessing that this is not the first BMW you have worked on. I was amazed to see how easy BMW designers made removing and replacing parts. I guess a quality car is expected to be maintained and kept running for a long time.

Ja servus! Bavarian resident here. When I was still an Apprentice in the early 2000s, we worked daily on several E39. It was a very, very common model. We noted days when only one model came in and E39 had the most markings on the list, followed by E46 and E36. Both latter you still can spot daily on the streets. But E39 are very rare. I see maybe one a week and I commute to work six days a week 65 km each (around 41 miles). Thank you for saving this one ☺☺
Wow, it's the first video I've seen from your channel, and it is insane! The amount of small details you do, like using 2nd video to show that both mirrors are functioning, or that you completely break down diagnostics to smallest pieces and even show how to make a diy smoke machine - is showing how much u care about ur videos. A 2003 BMW is probably worth $1150 especially if it’s not working and running!
Hi french guy!
This is legitimately one of the best car videos I've ever watched. The diagnostic process was so clearly laid out, especially the part about diagnosing head gasket leaks (I LOVE IT when people are able to break down a complex problem into individual troubleshooting components)
Totally agree
@@kevinisawake I wholeheartedly agree...!!
smoke adicts stay away from the smoke test...
Where were you brother for so many years ? I hope all is good with you. Now keep making fantastic videos ❤
I love the way you explain things…
Not just how to, but precisely how the parts should work in a car.
5 years later and junky is still pumping out high quality videos! can't wait for the rest of the restoration series to drop 😎
the level of professionality with which you operate and cut your videos together is beyond anything i have ever experienced before. never seen the channel before, instant sub.
Like seeing an old friend being revived.
i had a 98' 528i, those cars feel solid. even a small thing like the turning signal on felt very heavy and gave you a nice feeling of strong long lasting quality.
overpriced plastic nice
The very best, most concise and easy to listen to advice/ instructions of
working on a BMW I have ever seen. The guy is so confident and tells us amateurs
EXACTLY how to carry out each stage of the work. Please keep the videos coming
You are a top,top mechanic. Watching this gives me confidence that I can do these
jobs. Very well done sir.
Professional production values. Clear and concise repair filming--and sped up to keep viewer interest. Great job--you earned a subscription.
But running it--or even cranking--with 3-year-old gas is questionable. But I assumed you smelled it first.
With love to Uruguay from the United States.
This has got to be the best, most informative, most well explained automotive video I have ever seen. Been DIY-ing my cars for 25 years and I really learned a lot from this video. Thank you for posting this.
Deal of the century! Well done. I have been working on BMWs for 30+ years as a DIYer and I learned things. Thank you.
Hats off to you, bro.
as an e39 owner, I cringed when he noted the blue coolant residue on the engine bay... then fills green coolant 😮
Excellent, no-nonsense information-centered video! No idiotic intro video. No annoying background music. No goofy commentary. Subscribed.
What a way to return to RUclips. If only every mechanic was as in depth and efficient as this legend
This probably has to be the most informative and well put together mechanical/car video I’ve ever seen. Extremely impressive, following the journey!
This channel is superb for a home mechanic in training ;) Thanks for your logical problem solving and great teaching!
I usually don't comment videos, but i have to now. I take my hat off to this guy, for being so knowledgeable but also willing to spend his time explaingin carefully his reasoning. It makes everything look so simple. Pure class. Congrats, sir!
Easily the BEST video I've ever seen on car recovery. So much knowledge in this video. I wish I had a dad like you when I was young!
This car is so easy to work on, you just need to disassemble the international space station every time you want to change something. It did make up for a good warch and we learned a lot from the video, so thanks a bunch.
International space station,, 🤣🤣🤣
Brother where is the rest of this journey .. you stopped uploading .. Really loved the diagnostic and wanted to see MORE ! keep doing great my man !
Very helpful video. I like the ease of showing the various repairs without overly complicated explanations and camera work. Well done.
The level of quality of this video regarding diagnosis, presentation, knowledge, troubleshooting, video editing, and extreme attention to detail is beyond impresive and absoultely amazing. As another commenter stated, this is automotive repair at a whole different level. Thank you for sharing!
He is just like M539 restorations
Finally, after more than four years you are back, Glad to see you again.
More than 4 less than 6. Some people call it 5.
lol
BROOO... YOU'RE BACK! it's been years! Welcome back. We've missed you!
You are back!!! I was wondering what happened to you you didn't show up in 5 years! I hope you are doing good. Top notch content!
He's back. Finally
This is one of the best car DIY videos that I've ever seen.
I agree, do you know of any more channels like this?

I absolutely loved this. I'm in the UK and watch a lot of UK based DIY guys. Your video really hit the spot. A good find, followed by the story of it's restoration. Just what is needed. No bull - just great work. Thank you.
That was some great diagnostic work. You deserve more subscribers.
Amazing video. keep up the good work!
Where have you been?????
Last few years was very hectic, This videos was shot in 2019 but due to work commitments and minor health issues, it got delayed and took me some time to get back on track.
Never seen your channel before, but you got a new subscriber now!
On point, explanatory, just superb.
Best diagnostics and repair video I have watched in decades! This is a masterpiece
12:02 that aux belt was routed incorrectly. That belt is going to snap or walk off the pulleys sooner or later!
$100k in 2003? Australian? It was around $41k in US.
Edit: $725 was an absolute bargain though 😊
Best car restoration and repair video ever!!!!! Use this video to sell this car at way higher than blue book price... When has anyone been able to see what has been done to a car to bring it up to an extremely excellent level of operation.... This is better than buying a certified car...
The steering wheel is on the wrong side that why it’s so cheap

Not one single BMW from the 1990s had a value of $100,000, none. What a way to get subscribers.
It's not even a 90s BMW, 100k does seem like too much but still
@@noahbrunell9507 This car platform e39 was released way before 1999, albeit it with a slightly smaller engine and called 528i. Not even the 400hp GOAT e39 M5 was 100k.
A half an hour ago I was nodding off. Now here I am sitting up straight, eyes wide open and eager to give credit where credit is due. You've got a great way of explaining things - and a brand new subscriber.
8:44 bro drive in Heaven
But how many hours of work did you put in? How do you account for tools, utility cost etc? 2000$ sounds nice, but it's not a lot if you want to make a living of it.
It's amazing how clear and simple he explains everything, as others have mentioned I learned so much more about mechanics in a 30 minute video compared to countless hours of watching car content on youtube.
Somebody will pay 12K for this?! WOW! Good for you!
not with over 190k miles, you are crazy if you think that, at best 4k he will get
No not a base package 525 maybe 2k
You either buy a BMW 725 or a $725 BMW
Videos like this give me so much motivation to move to the next step. I have around 2k in an envelope from selling / flipping junk over the last year that my wife said I'm free to use to flip my first car after we move later this year. The way you explained the block contamination helped me tremendously. I do have a 2005 car that I'm at least going to start with the code reader like you did here and try to understand the interrelations between the items; maybe I'll get lucky and have a simple repair with which to start.
wishing you all the best

Let this be a lesson boys. Never listen to the wife. If he had kept going at these videos for the last 5 years he'd have 5M subscribers and be able to quit his job and pay his mortgage f'in around in his driveway with old cars.
Keep going mate, we'll keep watching.
Loved the vacuum leak diagnosis and repair section. I found it very useful.
Wow. I've never seen a more competent mechanic at work. My respect for your craftsmanship

Came here not expecting much but really enjoyed this video. 30 mins felt long at first but I can appreciate all the work that came behind and after watching the full video I feel that I need more of this and I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Just watched this video. I barely know anything about cars, I'm not a mechanic or a DIY for cars myself.
But this is presented was very satisfying to watch.
holy mother of underrated mechanics... your diagnosis skills are beyond impressive good work man seriously. you make it seem like owning a bmw is nothing
Man, your knowledge, process, diagnosing, showing, and telling us what is happening are on another level.
I don't even have a car.... I still watched the hall thing. This was a perfect video. Just perfect. Man... I'm blown away! Keep doing what your doing bro. You got your self a subscriber! Can't wait to see more!

Best video so far about restoring an E39! New king on another continent! E39 was the last reliable BMW ever made. Good to see you're using quality parts that a BMW needs. Only one remark, BMW factory coolant is blue (G11). Waiting for more...
Hugely (and gratefully) impressed with fine camera work and top-notch lighting, editing on this tutorial. Detailed work and knowledge of topic kept this viewer attention. Best wrenching video seen yet. Aloha…
An excellent video that’s very informative and helpful to understand. 😊
Master class in filming, commentary, editing, keeping track of every part and it's cost and much, much more. Un-freaking believable. Thank you so much for this entertaining satisfying motivational video.
I'm definitely gonna watch all you other ones at least on this car, cause I love old BMWs. Just wanted to tell you thanks for such quality videos, it really is amazing.
