    If you heat up the tip on the seam sealer applicator and flatten it out you can mimic the factory job pretty close. Good work man! Definitely a good skill to know.

  • @billhorterjr1982
    @billhorterjr1982 Месяц назад +33

    Zach, when you weld a long thin seam, weld 2 inches, use a wet rag and cool it down, space 5 inches then weld 2 inches, cool with rag then go back, weld the middle between the welds, cool with a rag and keep going, takes longer but less warping. On a long thicker quarter panel weld 6 inches, space 6 cool with wet rag and weld 6, space and repeat.

    • @BIGWIGGLE223
      @BIGWIGGLE223 Месяц назад +2

      Just what I was saying. I don't know if I'd go 2 inches on that razor thin steel though. Maybe not much more than a 1/4 inch, but with the wet rag technique you can move back and forth a whole lot faster.

    • @jamesjones4607
      @jamesjones4607 Месяц назад +1

      The best way on the tin foil modern cars are made is alot of little (sub 1/2 inch) welds, spaced 3 or 4 inches apart slowly filling the areas in only after the metal is cold to the touch

    • @BIGWIGGLE223
      @BIGWIGGLE223 Месяц назад

      You could ask 100 different welders the same question and get 100 different answers. What is it they say about opinions and assholes? Lol!

    • @BIGWIGGLE223
      @BIGWIGGLE223 Месяц назад +1

      @@jamesjones4607 I worked with an old timer that would heat the seam up with a torch like he was gonna weld aluminum, but that was on older cars that had armer plate for door skins. Haha! Just remembered thinking he was full of shit until I watched him do it on an old '47 Buick.

  • @jamesjones4607
    @jamesjones4607 Месяц назад +50

    Few things to note 1. Should have removed the 12v battery and the hybrid battery before welding
    2. per toyota (and every manufacturer) you cant reuse a folded seam panel which that quarter is (wheel arch is crimped over the inner structure)
    3. You arent allowed to splice or reuse the HSS inner structure
    4. He cut the stucture of the inner rocker, this is also HSS, and needed to be replaced
    If anyone is doing this to your car (looking at you geico, progressive, and farmers) dont let them touch your car, it is unsafe and illegal, car must be returned to pre accident condition which means used weld on panels are not allowed

    • @Shawn_Welsh
      @Shawn_Welsh 21 день назад

      These RUclips rebuilders are eventually going to get someone killed. This guy has no idea how dangerous this repair could be in a subsequent collision. His only concern is that the exterior panels line up.... I hope no one ever needs to rely on that LR seat belt. It was bad enough with guys like samcrac rebuilding cars for himself and theoretically only putting himself and his family in danger, but this guy is straight up saying he's rebuilding it to sell to someone for a profit and he's proud that he somehow got it with a clean title!!

    • @PinnacIeSaint
      @PinnacIeSaint 21 день назад +15

      I'm glad someone familiar in the field spoke up. I was going to recommend taking it to a Collision Specialist before reselling it if for nothing else than to reassure his work is up to par and not only OK. Because he's putting another families life at risk for the sake of making a few bucks. If this was his own car Fine and Dandy. But no not to sell.

    • @goku2057
      @goku2057 18 дней назад +5

      This. He lost me mid way when he said this is really hard so I'm not going to replace it. If you're selling a car with a not salvaged title it better be repaired properly.

    • @rrnonya5472

      Ah the "clean carfax" junk ... It was totaled before and is still... totaled .. a complete loss... If you want something cheap and unsafe to putz around in .. no worries... but this car is still a total loss because all the work is STRICTLY cosmetic not structural. Most folks think "clean carfax" means never been in an accident.. It only means no accidents have been reported or found out... big difference.

    Should be a warning to those of you who've purchased a car with a "clean" title and sometimes a "clean" car fax. To be honest the easiest way to see if any major repairs have been done is to take a car to CarMax - they usually can find just about every repair/repaint on a car... I know Zach would disclose but in some places they may only say that this had "minor damage"....

  • @1993Revhead

    It's funny, every time I have enquired about a used car with a rebuilt title, the seller had no documentation on the work done, and claimed that it only had 'minor' damage like a broken taillight or needed a new bumper.

    Just fyi any hybrid’s value is based on battery age. Unless the buyer is an idiot. I flipped an undamaged Prius after rebuilding the hybrid battery. Still only sold it for $5500 in Central Florida. Best of luck to you though. Your $11000 is an estimate without a damaged/totaled/salvage vehicle. Again you may get lucky with an idiot buyer, but most wouldn’t pay more than 50% KBB if the car has frame damage or salvage history.

    You can smash the end of the seam sealer. Make it flat. Then cut it off only leaving about 1 1/2 inches left. Then when you apply it. Constant pressure. Then pause every 1/8 inch. You can use a old raptor liner kit and buy rubber undercoating for 35 a gallon.

    Hey man. Might want to check your main battery now. If you didn't unplug the main hybrid battery before welding on the body you could have fried several electrical components. I've seen videos from channels like Electric Supercar who ruined BMS's from not disconnecting the big battery before arcing electricity to the frame. I didn't see a clip of you getting to the battery and disconnecting it so I was curious to see if anything got messed up. Sorry if it was! Hope it's not!!!!! Absolutely LOVE your videos.
    Also, boostedboys talked about disconnecting the battery from their "plaidessy" before welding the 2 frames together for that reason.

I started with nothing and spent the last 20yrs building my tool collection to do this kinda work so basically every job I do I keep a little profit for myself and the rest is reinvested into new tools to make it more efficient or easier. I started with a hammer grinder and anvil to make my own handmade repair panels from scratch, so if aomeone is determined it can be done.

    23:26 A backing seems like a good idea, but it is not. You are providing a place for water to get trapped and this will be the failure point in the future with rust. But welding the joint is all you need to do.

    I appreciate the accounting of parts and supplies. I'd also be interested in the time you have in the project. Finding the car, inspection, locating parts, pulling time, dissassembly, reassembly and repair, body work, painting/buffing/polishing, advertising and selling the car. That and what tools are needed. I know you have all, or most, the tools needed but someone considering trying this may not know. It seems to me like if anything would have to be outsourced it could quickly turn from profit to break even or even a loss.
