FordTechMakuloco my 06 mustang gt just started slipping 3rd to 4th gear. No engine light and no problems with reverse. Took ot to aamco and they said i need a rebuild. Any suggestions??
Do you have a video on replacing the rack and pinion?
FordTechMakuloco just in case ER um someone installed the pulley backwards how would one remove it? Yes I know probably going to have to install a new pulley after but how does my friend remove such an embarrassing mess up.
Hey Ford tech I have a question for you
I have a 5.4 Triton 2004 Ford F150 I replace the power steering pump and now I'm leaking motor oil somewhere around the power steering pump I did not have all the bolts to put the new power steering pump back on so I did not know if all could be coming out of one of the boat holes or where could it be coming from thank you
He explained the entire procedure very well.
Just broke my install tool and I’m broke so stressed right now, really appreciate you going out your way to inform us
I broke two of those loaner tools from the parts store. It busted inside the pump with the separately purchased pulley partially installed. All three items rendered useless. Yesterday, I bought my own cheap version of the tool, but after seeing this, I bought the OTC tool he recommended. I'll wait on the OTC tool to arrive and just eat the cost on the cheap tool, because I don't want to buy another pump and pulley. Those cheap tool sets seem to be almost a one-time use. If you can find one with the pulley installed, they are $243.00. This is such an easy job, but it's filled with needless hurdles.
Piece of wood and a hammer
Hey guys, I had to do this same job on a chevy blazer and It took like 5 attempts to take pully off or on. I ended using a propane torch to heat whole pully and I could get 4 or 4 wrench turns then reheat repeat. Make sure shaft and pully have no Burr or scrapes on it. Some cars we work on are too much bigger pain.
Thanks for this video. I had to replace the PS pump on my 2008 F150. I ordered one with a pulley but of course I got one without. Got the tools to do this job and it all worked out.
I think your explanation of the endplay just saved from pulling a decent pump. Thank you.
Interesting how much end play is acceptable. Nice demo with the tool Brian.
Good thing I watched your video. I had no idea I needed another tool to put the pulley back on. Thanks again for the save!
I just replaced my steering pump recently (03/23) and the video information is still quite valid and good. However a few things not mentioned is the plastic/teflon o-ring. It is not pliable, meaning if you stretch it too far it will not regain its original shape. Also meaning when tightening the high pressure side of the hose into the pump with the plastic/teflon ring may not get sealed correctly. I , luckily, was able to get a good seal even though the ring was loosely fitted. No leaks after 3 days.. But will keep an eye on it.
The other thing that should be mentioned is the tool for removing and pressing the pully should be high quality. While the "Harbor Freight" - made in china, did the job. I had improvise to get the job done. I ended up having to use a hose clamp rather than the provided sleeve due to the fact there was so much slop and play that it didnt allow the collars to stay in place when trying to take it off, which in turn made the tool fail in the end. And as he suggested @8:45 the installer bolt breaks quite easily, especially when taking the pully off. I broke the part 2 times, first time when taking the pully off and second time when I pressed the pully too far and had to pull the pully away form the pump body without the pully rubbing against the pump.
In essence, because of the low quality tool I used it took a 3 hour job and made into a 2 day job just because I wanted to save money on a tool I knew I probably wouldnt use again.
As usual nice video , I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas 🎁🎄 & happy new year 🎊
Thank you and all those involved in the content, efforts and production of this channel.

Great info! Thanks. Bought a similar kit and was stunned not to see the Puller" I had expected!
Just ordered the tool. Thanks for creating this video.
This couldn't have come at a better time. Ordered my new pump and hoses last night and picking them up today. This is my first time so here goes nothing!
Thank you!
Merry Christmas everyone!
Where did you order your new pump from? THANKS
Ronald Cach i got it from auto zone, it was only like $50, but with the core charge it was $63 and some change. I got it the next day as well.
Ronald Cach I also got the hoses and rebuild kit from them.
Thanks
Thanks
Thanks so much for posting this very informative video!
Happy Christmas and a great New Year.
He already mentioned don't heat the pulley. Plastic pulleys expand and contract VERY LITTLE with temperature changes, so you'd be wasting your time, and heat would likely damage the pulley. The small diameter of the pump shaft likely means that even leaving your pump in your deep freeze overnight won't shrink the shaft enough to make a noticeable difference either, but at least that won't hurt anything.
Didn't notice the end play until I was putting the belt back on. Thought for sure I was in trouble. Thanks for saying that it's normal
Amazing video ! Thanks for this !
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Once again another sweet video. Thanks !
Excellent video
Excellent demonstration! Thanks and happy holidays!
Thank you for posting this video
Great info. I just did this on my 6.4 powerstroke
What was the red case installer kit you used you have a Amazon link for that kit also
Last year I did my phasers and all and changed idlers, tensioner, have new alternator, new water pump, etc. Now there is an intermittent squeal like a tensioner from the power steering pump side of the bay. Pulled the belt and everything is smooth and thought the play meant this was the issue but now I'm not sure. Thoughts? Thanks for all your videos too the phaser one was super helpful!
Thanks Brian good info
Thanks for another great vid! Question: When removing the pump for replacement, is it necessary to also remove the pressure hose with it? I would like to leave the hose alone, if possible. Thanks!
I know that when putting on pressed wheel bearings there is a suggestion of putting them in the freezer to shrink them and make installation easier. Have you ever tried placing the pulley in an oven so it expands and would slip on much easier? Don't do enough to know myself but would be interesting to find out.
Also I've been told that putting grease or anti-seize on the threads of pullers will lengthen their useful life.
Thank you so much.I need all the help i can get.
2 weeks too late. But luckily I got a reman with the pulley installed and got the old one off without pulling the pulley.
HI, Is this the same pump I have on my 2006 ford ranger [2.3 liter ] ? THANKS FRIEND
With the interference fit so tight between the pump shaft and the pulley. Have you ever heated the pulley to install it to the pump shaft? Your thoughts on this procedure?
Great video thanks
I would like to see a video on replacing the pressure hose. It's a bear to replace if the nut is on the hose already.
I’m following your excellent four-part timing chain videos and the last thing I need to do is to remove the power steering unit before I can pull off the timing cover. (I already found an incredible amount of broken plastic chunks from the timing chain guides in my oil pan so I know I am on the right track. My pickup tube was so clogged with plastic debris that if it were one of my coronary arteries I’d be on a table at the ER with paddles on my chest and someone shouting “Clear”). I was able to get the lower bolt loose but I’m having a heck of a time getting the top front bolt to break free and I’m afraid that I will round off the bolt if I try any harder. Is it possible to just remove the pulley and leave the rest of the power steering unit in place to get access to remove the timing cover? It looks like there is only a single 13mm bolt behind the pulley. Thank you for your excellent videos.
Excelente video . Thank you .
Recently changed my pump on my 2010 5.4, where the pump bolts to the block there was only 3 bolts in out of 4. Which actually saved me some time. Cuz the hardest 1 to do was out already. (Someone changed it before). Now I gotta change my pump again after doing donuts in the snow. Wonder if it has to do with the missing housing bolt
Could you use this tool when you’re doing a 5.4 timing job ?
Love your videos, they help me out a lot!! I have a question if you get the chance to help me out? I have a 5.4 in an 08 F150, I have swapped out the High-pressure line on the power steering system twice but keep getting the same leak at the pump even with a new pump installed. Do I need to buy the line at the dealer? The ones I have used are from and auto parts store.
Hi Brian will that puller kit work on the c2 pump with reservoir??
Regards James
Thanks so much. Brian
Good video Brian, I always did the pulley removal on the car. I never could get at the bolts and hoses with the pulley on
See FTM's video, Ford Quick Tips 75, for his advice on removing these pumps!
Greate video man am going to have to replace my power steering pump here soon on my 2007 ford f150 4.6L 2 valve and was wounding if you could do a video on how to remove and replace it :)
A little heat will expand the pully a little and install is very easy. Pully only! Just do not heat it to much works great and an old school trick
Hi I have a question I can find your answer Can I change the speedbox currently available to new ones with a little more speed and if there are alternative burning plugs that do not break or cause problems such as original burners and this is for Ford Expedition 2005
Will this otc tool kit work on my 2005 ford excursion 6.8l v10 limited 4x4 power steering pump it looks like a c3 the threads in the shaft are 8mm
I put a new pump and pulley on my 99 f150 and the pulley installer from the parts store didn’t have the adapter. I used a socket and a 2.5 pound hammer to put it on. I didn’t beat it but tapped it until it was on. Was that bad for the pump or would it be ok?
04 F150 5.4 3v. 250k miles. Original everything. I run 2cycle oil in power steering.
Nice video thanks
I have a 2001 grand marquis, remote resivuar, bent pully, is this the setup I need?
Awesome video, very clear and this is the same power steering pump I've got on my 2003 Ford Crown-Victoria. Could you please also make a video on how to take out a broken end part of the installer bolt which unfortunately ended up being stuck in the pump axle? I think I probably had bought on amazon a good quality set, but I shouldn't have used the impact wrench for the install process 😢
that happened to me too
So you can use a 13/16 deep socket and brace the pulley so it wont turn and remove it right? It can be done on the car?
Awesome 😎
Will the CIII pump run hydroboost brakes, too, with no problem? Does it have enough power?
I have a 2000 Ford v6 mustang 3.8l . I have replaced the recon pinion the steering pump twice all the lines and still has a whining noise. Some one told me to add Lucas that's recommended for a steering pump. Will that help ?
I really appreciate the end play part. mine had some and i thought i had a bad pump
Will this be the same procedure on a 2005 ford focus ZX4 2.3 Liter ?
Thank you. Lol, love tap!
My puller has the same ground down split collar from those same pumps.
Of course, almost all the japanese cars have bolt-on pulleys, real easy to remove and install. But, also of course, you never have to do it because they never fail...(or almost).
I have a 5.4 Triton 2004 Ford F150 I replace the power steering pump and now I'm leaking oil somewhere around the power steering pump I didn't put all the bolts back in the power steering pump so I didn't know if it could be leaking from one in the bolt holes any suggestions
Hello from Russia! Thank you very much for the next cognitive video! if you could only imagine how I suffered in Russia was looking for a special puller for an American car. I have a Ford Crown Victoria 92.
Sweet! Smooth riding car. I had a '95 Mercury Grand Marquis. It is built like the Ford Crown Victoria. Loved that car!
Off topic but I have a Taurus brake question. Any idea why Ford has a different brake hose fitting for the rear passenger side caliper? There’s no banjo bolt and fitting just a straight hose threaded in the caliper. So the only way to get it off is to unscrew the whole caliper from the line. Total pain
How to solve the PS noise on Ford rangers??
My pump looks just like that mine is for a 2005 ford excursion 6.8l v10 limited 4x4
Great info as always. Would you ever recommend preheating the pulley to make the install easier?
no
Very cool video 👍🏻👍🏻 ... I use the Snap On tool for that. Seems to work better then any other tool so for..
Oh I know the tool you are talking about for removal right?
FordTechMakuloco Its 2 tools in 1.. Snap One is the only one I’ve seen that makes this kind of tool.. It removes it and install it.. I’ll find the part number for the tool
FordTechMakuloco CJ3PSA
I am trying to install a new pulley on my pump while in the car, the tool keeps coming unthreaded from the pulley shaft. I suppose it would be much easier on the bench? But I need to install while the pump is on the car.
Briancan you include a link for the brass drift ?
Hello Ford Tech. Ive watched alot of your videos and I currently replaced the PS pump and lines on a 2007 Focus. I can not seem to get the air out of the system. Ive left vacuum on overnight also attached vacuum pump while going lock to lock with engine off. Once I start it it foams instantly. Thanks for your help.
you have to get air out, duaneb. Sounds like a lemon car.
I have a 2002 Mustang GT. Just replaced my ENTIRE power steering system (rack; pump; all lines, except for the one coming off the reservoir with a Y, which isn't available any longer). There's currently zero fluid in my system. What would be the correct procedure(s), in order, to add fluid and bleed air from the pump and the entire system? Thank you. By the way, have watched MANY of your videos - they're ALWAYS excellent!
Need to make a video on replacing the t/y connector on the 2015 5.0 due to leaking coolant.
Why can’t we have shaft with threads, for pulleys, which tighten in the direction of the rotation.
I have the same pump in my 03 expedition Eddie Bauer edition. I got the cheapo kit like you have and the instructions are totally different. The show putting a button onto the end and then turn the center 1/2 in while holding the larger 13/16th nut in place. Needless to say it’s not working
For vids are very helpful, thank you. Im replacing the power steering pump on my 2001 ford excursion, 6.8L V10. I ordered the pump, but mistakenly ordered the one with the reservoir. Can i just remove the reservoir and still use it, or, do i need to send it back and re-order the one without the reservoir? And guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.
I believe the C2 pump( the one with reservoir) has the mounting holes in the front where the shaft is and the C3( no reservoir) has it on the side as shown in this video. Hope that helps!
thank you
I going from 6 rib to 8rib. I hope this can be done with the pump on the motor.
Replaced my pump with autozone model.worked for about 50 miles.hit a bump parked truck and now it has no idle pressure .fluid full ,no leaks .bled unit about 2 separate times with a minimum of 20 lock to locks .checked my universals in steering shaft they are fine .at throttle I have steering .no issues previously had to replace pump due to rotted thread on shaft after replacing timing chain and removing pulley for easier pump removal .any suggestions this is a 04 f 150 4.6 .thanks for the great vids .
autozone stuff is junk....
I have a 2005 Ford freestyle steering with easy then hard to turn then easy I already had a wreck here at the house that I had ordered and went ahead and put it on didn't fix it so then I put a power steering pump on didn't fix it only thing else I know possibly could be the intermediate shaft any response would be helpful I know it's hard to diagnose anything long-distance
Today for the first time I noticed a squealing sound when I turn the wheel to the right. But it ONLY happens when I turn to the right, and am moving. If I’m parked, there’s no noise. Also, if I turn the wheel ALL the way to the right until it can’t turn anymore, the squealing stops. Immediately I thought of the serp belt, but that doesn’t make sense to me because if it were the belt, I would think it would squeal whether I turn left OR right, and also when I’m parked and turn the wheel. Could it maybe be the power steering pump? But again, the left/right issue is throwing me off. The other thing is maybe it’s the steering column itself. But it sounds like squealing, not grinding.
I just got a dorman pulley and napa pump and it was 5 times harder then what I just watched. Think the last third I'm going have to use a Hydraulic press
Thanks man, my pulley is the old style pump and it has that little back and forth play that you said is normal and I was about to change the pump because I have a squealing belt that driving me crazy. I have a 2003 ford Taurus with the 3.0 over head valve and I'm having a difficult time finding the source of the squeal. I can spray the belt with water and the squeal goes away for a few seconds leading me to believe it's a pulley misalignment. I just can't find the source of the squeal.... any idea's on that particular engine???
Tensioner fault?
Do you have a recommendation on an additive to put in a 98 Ranger with a noisy PS pump? Lucas maybe?
Archoil ar 9100(amazon) or hotshot secret fr3 from oreillys
Will this OTC tool work on an 01 Mustang GT?
Do these rattle when they go bad? The stock pump on my 2000 is leaking from the high pressure thread and rattles at low rpms. For example when I turn the ac or headlights on.
No
How to replace.stering RAC pinon Ford f 150 2005 5.4 eng.tku.
Let's see you change out a water pump on one of those new Ford Tauruses 2010 and up.
I ordered a new crank and ps pulley, I didn't like how rusted they were, But My threads are just too far gone. Using hand tools it just rips the installer tool out Everytime.
are there bearings on this pulley or when it starts whining bad it's because of the pump only?
Bearings don't make noise on the pumps, it is the pulley system failing in the FEAD.
I used it in crown vict 2012 the small silver belt stick up with the longe bolt and the wheel not comes out also hi hi hi
Great video but my pulley is stuck on. Used the same kit and bent the attachment 😂. Oh well buy a new one with pulley and maybe high pressure return hose
Thanks.. at 1:50 why does power steering pumps have shaft end play?
Perfectly normal.
When using an impact to take off the pulley, an amount of grease (small dab) on the threads of the tool, is not a bad idea... actually never a bad idea, even with hand tools....
Thanks for ALL your videos, I have found them so useful!
Definitely I always make sure that forcing screw is lubricated there is allot of pressure on those threads.
Is this for ford escape 2008?????
show how u install a new Teflon ring on the high pressure side fittings. I hate those things!
I have a video on that too.
Put new bare pump into freezer couple of hours, then put pulley on very easy, then let pump warm up to good temp and all is well
You still need to press it on so you might as well just get it done and skip the wait.
What kind of grease?
Is shaft end play normal on a 2005 Ford f150 4.6 V8 engine?
yes
My 00' Mercury Mystique 2.0L (Ford Contour) has one of these CIII pumps.
I like driving my Mystique because it is already a rare car to see on the road. It takes a lot to keep mine going (150K). I just got done with a major overhaul: swapped out a bad VCT solenoid, new timing belt, water pump, rebuilt front suspension, new high pressure steering hose, etc. Dropping the sub-frame is really the best way to do a lot of stuff (don't forget alignment pins!). Runs great!
I want to buy a SVT Contour as a project car. Even tho the Contours have just about disappeared from the road, there remains a small but dedicated group of people that keep em running, especially the SVT. Check out the RUclips channel "ForgottenSVT".
P.S. I watch your channel a lot.
