standing over engine bay with only my hand tools, pully in hand, a head full of sweat, wrist hurting, 4 Smashed fingers. power tools definitely recommended, not necessary
Hi Folks, I have a power steering pump that does NOT have a threaded center. The method he is using made me crazy for hours until I read on a corvette post that some pumps only have a keyway and a nut holding on the pulley. No threaded female parts!! So, there is no need to pull it or press it on. This video is excellent, btw, for all press-on types of steering pumps. I hope this helps someone and they don't get crazy as I did. MK
Best idea so far, using your hand to stop the pulley from turning. I'll try it and report back. So far I haven't been able to stop the shaft/pulley from turning which just unscrews the installer tool. EDIT, UPDATE 1/10/2020: Your method worked. I used a long handled ratchet, and braced it as shown to give one hand free. Was still a bit difficult to hold the pulley though so I added a rubber washer between the installer bearing and pulley and that did the trick. Got it up and running now, thanks OP.
Major props to you man. Every other idiot RUclipsr has you using the threaded bolt to remove the pulley. I wrestled with it for two weeks trying to get it off, breaking the bolt in it. I came across your video last night and was able to pull it off in one minute with hand tools. Thank you so much. Anyone reading this, this is how you do it!. Rock on man!!!!
In the middle of replacing the power steering pump in my slant 6 1980 Dodge aspen. Opened this rental kit from O'Reilley and I was like WTF? Thanks for the video, the kit works like a charm.
You put the washer on the wrong side of the thrust bearing which is why you had to hold the pulley with your hand. The washer must go against the inner race of the thrust bearing. This is the side with a tiny gap around the outer edge - inside the outer "cup". Also, for this pump, use the shortest threaded shaft to install the pulley.
Excellent concise ..... well it could have been a little better! Man you saved my ass, like you I hadn't looked at this contraption in years and was bedazzled! You made me a pro with it!!! Thanks brudda!
A thread chaser! I never thought of that! I feel so stupid! I'm working on mine right now, in fact. Like yours, the interior threads on mine are very rusty. I was able to only get 2 threads of the bolt into it. Amazingly, I was able to get the pulley about 1/2 way on, before those 2 threads gave way. I felt helpless. How do I get the bolt in, so I can finish this job?! A HAH!! A LOT of lubricant and a thread chaser will clean out those threads! YES!! That's what I'll try tomorrow. Thank you so much!
thank you very much for your video, i just installed my power steering pump and is good the only thing i pinched my radiator but your video helped me a lot thanks a lot
Thanks a lot, I have a Holden Commodore VZ Ute with a bad belt and tensioner, for some reason GM's engineers decided to place one of the belt tensioner bolts right on the lip of the power steering pump pulley, so to change the belt tensioner either the pulley or the PS pump have to come off, taking the pulley off will be easier.
Thanks for posting this!! Just replaced my power steering pump, and the new one came with the pulley disassembled. I have the HF kit, pulled the old pulley, but had no idea how to reinstall! It's on, but I crushed the spinner that held ball bearings. But the job is done, thanks to your video!!
Oh yea same here after I good the whole motor and everything connected to it out of the car ...... I appreciate the video but it's useless to me with the space restrictions I have. With it being in my damn car
yes this should make my first try of changing power steering pump on 2004 pontiac Aztec i seen other people trying to do it without removing pully first ?
Well that was pretty fucking slick! Right tool for the right job saves you from a shit show and something inevitably being broken during a man tantrum!!!
Thanks for sharing bro. I’m guessing I’m going to need this tool to tighten it also? Mine is not sitting flush in the shaft and is wobbling about 1/8 inch. Hopefully I can tighten it down the shaft.
awesome ,thank you very much,,i have a kit but puting back on was confusing,,cause instructions say counter clock wise,,,instead clockwise like i thought
Same thing happened to me. Those instructions are not clear and I believe are not correct. Turned the 7/8 " nut clockwise and it went back on . Doing what instructions say will passiblly screw up the threads which may have happened to me. But it's done and I recommend not to mess with it any more.
Very informative. Thank you. I can't believe it is a press fit. Why, for the love of GM can't they just bolt/key it on. Another special tool needed. SMH
I'm about to wade into replacing my pull. I removed itself an took the serpentine belt with it on my drive home the other day. It did not however, remove the center part of the pully. The pulley broke apart and away from that center sleeve with the lip. Doesn't look like it will matter since the tool applies force against/between the lip and the center pin. I'll find out shortly.
@@TestDontguess Didn't need to -- This one was awesome! In your videos you don't try to tell us how you felt when your 3rd grade girlfriend broke up with you...You just show the job being done. That's what I want!!! Action!!!
Any major Auto Parts store will loan you that pulley removal kit for around $45. Save your receipt though because when you return it you get your money back in full, Why buy a tool you'll use once and never use again.. Rent one for a day. or longer, There's no time limit.
Great video. I'm trying to install my pulley now on my new pump ls engine. When using the pulley installer I started tighten and It got tight and started to go crooked so I took it out and used a tap to re tap the threads . Gunna try it again any advice would help thanks!

Hey I’ve got my self in to a bit of a problem I rented one of theses sets and turns out it came with a striped center screw I got a bit pissed off and I started to bang the pulley in with a hammer I didn’t do that to much because I then got worried I may destroy my power steering pump I was wanting to see if you can give me your best advice in this situation do you think I damaged it

That LS looks soooo good in there.
Can't wait to see and hear it fire up!
This is way better than the AutoZone video. You actually explain things
Very informative on how to use these tools. Thank you for taking the time to show us!

You’re why I read the comments. Nice tip. Thanks👍
It don’t matter which way the washer goes it will still spin either way
Thank you! Had the tool forever and never needed it until today. Got me going!!!
Best pulley r&r I've seen . Great lighting i casee everything that needs to be seen. Thanks I'll keep watching.

Appreciate the video, used it to remove my ls pulley!
Awesome! Exactly what I needed! Thank you!
Good vid! I rented a pulley puller and sat without a clue looking at it.
Tip, use a 1/2 in socket and 2 ft wrench to hold the install bolt.
slicker than snot! cool. I looked at my chevy one time and went hmmm now how the heck does that pulley come off. Now I know! Thanks!
Im in the same boat rn this pully blocks the damn manifold
I used this tool yesterday to pull the steering pump pulley. No space for the impact so hand tools only. It does take a minute. Good video
Ya lo voy a preparar gracias por la receta y Ya también hice el bocadillo de guayaba, y me quedo muy bueno mil gracias

3/8-16 tap for my 90s Chevy
I bought the kit also. Installation: This I did not know. Thanks
Let's not exaggerate too hard, it took 18 seconds with the impact to get it off. 😂

My power steering pump has two low pressure ports, did you have to cap one off or did your pump only have high and low?
yes this should make my first try of changing power steering pump on 2004 pontiac Aztec i seen other people trying to do it without removing pully first ?

Thanks!

I know right, having the proper tool makes all the difference
Good video, just the info I needed. I have a cj7 with an AMC 401 in it from a 1974 Cherokee, couldn't figure out how to get the pulley off.

what size Tap did you use Because mine is also a 91 chevy and is so gunked up that I cant determine the thread
I just bought this puller at Pincess Auto, great vid.
Does that tool kit fit 305ci 5.0L v8 Chevy pwr steer pump pulley
What size do you tap the main shaft with? 3/8 Fine or 3/8 Coarse?
What size is the tap that you use and where did you get it from
Very informative. Thank you. I can't believe it is a press fit. Why, for the love of GM can't they just bolt/key it on. Another special tool needed. SMH
Nice LS what is that? An old k15?
What size tap did you use to clean out the internal threads on the power steering pump shaft? thanks
Did you have to remove the bolt to put the pulled in cause my truck has a bolt that won’t come loose in the pulley
Thx Great Vid !
How do you Align the pullys?
Would I be able to put the pully on the pump then install the pump or is it not possible! Thanks
Awesome just Awesome 👌 👏 👍
I hadda change my pump on a 7.3, i used the same puller to do it, but i didnt take the frunt cap off to do it.

Mine is pressed though, does that make a difference?
Similar Kit at Harbor Freight for similar price if your in a hurry chat. Thanks for the video BSK
I replaced mine on a 98 ranger now truck is running rough any idea?
Jerry where do you come across all these tool kits.
Like the tools you were using to bend the brake line, a few videos ago.
I collect them over the years when they are on sale, from amazon, and princess auto which is like harbour freight in the USA

Did u figure it out
I like to put anti-seize on the pulley and shaft. It helps it go on and Insure is it will never seize.
You got very lucky I have removed these several times they suck
Is there a tio for keeping your pulley from turning? I'm trying to hold the pulley with my right hand while cranking the wrench with my left. Dont have enough strength to make it work.
If the pully is turning then most likely the threads are bad which he mentions you may need to retap the threads
yeah just trying to get ahold of demons row and insane throttle
Gracias 👍 👍
U don’t have ratcheting wrench?
You're lucky that works so well. Bent the pulley on my 77 f150 and apparently nobody makes a new one.
most likley not for something that old
Easy when the engines out. How can you get a impact wrench on the pulley puller in a front wheel drive?
Jack it
You don't do it by hand not too bad just some time and patience.
Ahhhhhh welcome to being a mechanic sux101.....
What size tap did you use to clean pulley threads?
They are not all the same size so you will need to figure that out on your own
kind of reminds me of the cool sax playing owl from sesame street.
I’m rolling over here! 😂
.... You're RIGHT HE DOES 😁
Lol
LMFAO
😂😂

yeah your pulley is most likely damaged and bent
Wish you had said what size wrenches you were using. Otherwise good video.
