This was such a perfect tutorial. My removal tools were slightly different but the techniques worked perfectly. The idea of using the vise to hold a wrench and the idea of using the impact tool to remove it work like a charm. I really appreciate this video thank you so much.
THANK YOU ! THANK YOU! .. I was fighting with this for over an hour. I basically couldn't even get it started.. Putting the wrench in a vise did the trick.. It still took a big of umph, especially since my vise isn't mounted to anything solid, but I was able to get the pulley on evenly and fully seated.. I didn't have good leverage angle since vise was on floor and my knee was holding it in place but again.. the important thing - IT's a GREAT Trick! thanks again.
I used to have one of these puller Kit's like this. I Let somebody borrow it one time and they never returned it this is a big reason why I don't loan tools to anyone even if they use them in my garage and I'm watching them use it
My father taught me two things about tools at a young age which I have kept with me ever since. 1. buy good tools, take care of them, and you will have them forever, and 2. No one will care for your tools the way you would. For these reason I avoid tool lending whenever possible. I clean things before I put them away, carefully wind up cords, a try to use things properly to keep them in operable condition. I have been burned too many times lending tools out. My dad is into wood working and not cars, but he still has all the tools he purchased when he was 20-years-old starting out. Same chop saw, drill press, table saw... even has the same damn hammer! Most of his tools are older than I am and out preform the new stuff I have.
Thanks for this video... simple and clear... the instructions with my puller set actually shows the wrenching arrow going the wrong way for my pulley installation... I do mine on the car because I have no work vice... One thing I noticed is you can't let the pulley spin as you wrench... I noticed you had to hold yours from spinning too... I get mine on like halfway, where its easier to hold on to... than I put the belt back on to help hold it for the final half...
I got my puller / installer at harbor freight on sale for $10.00. Also I like to use the boxed end for better grip on the nut and bolt. You and Eric are doing great jobs with your videos love watching them keep it up.
Yep, boxed end is a good call. I didnt have any 6 point 1/2 box wrenches around when trying to make this video. the 12 points tend to slip on those worn out puller. thanks for watching!
Did you mean "deinstall" or "Uninstall"? Hahaha just messing with ya. Very good and very helpful video. Thanks for making it. Answered everything I wanted to know.
@@DEInTheGarage Gotter dun did! Had an issue of getting the high pressure line off from the start. 5/8" box wrench great fit but no go. Long story short, bought a line wrench set and new deep well sockets from Harbor Freight . Bingo! got it off. New pump and pulley. Pulley was actually easy to grunt on with wrenches. Up and running and beat the rain too. Got a little belt squeak but was expected.
Thanks for the video. It looks like the bolt holes for the pump are located behind the pulley, how do you install the power steering pump if you have already put the pulley on it?
About to try this? Thank you... Thank you......I know it's probably a silly one but one quick question? Can you use an impact to install? Thank you thank you!!!! Have a great day or nite!!!! Many blessings, love and light!!! 💜🤍
Good advice on setup but I used Inferno LT idea: Instead of clamping your ratcheting wrench in a vice (ouch!!!), just clamp the end of the stud in the vice? No harm, no foul. Works like a charm.
Another thing that works if the pump is on the truck, and it’s cold out. Warm up the pulley in a bowl of hot water so the center ring expands just a touch, so that the cold shaft, which shrank, should go on with out issues so long as you deb it with grease. After that pulley cools it will be on there for good lol
If someone was to use the screw in place of the button to remove the pulley and now it is stuck in the power steering pump is there any easy way to remove the screw?
BELT SQUEAK TIP !!! Thanks for that one, BUT the low pressure tank output is on the back of many of these and they're very weak so don't even think of prying or pushing hard to get the hose off or even to push it back on, if you hear a crack or pop from the tank, it is ruined . There's plastic epoxy you can use with fiberglass screen to make it stronger or cobble it but it has to be clean of fluid to stick, ( might void warranty but you can goop it up first to make it stronger in the first place ? ) SO before a install carefully push the rubber hose back on the tank and then place the pump with pulley loosely on the mount. Working around that rubber hose at all do not pull pry or crack that or it is a bad day. The fix for this defective engineering is to go to a external metal reservoir and that means removing the air box to mount it with hoses long enough to reach the pump. phew. A metal or thicker OEM or aftermarket tank solution is probably out there somewhere... a metal pulley would also be nice since a slight ding with a ratchet is all that's needed to chip the lip of those fiber composite pulleys yikes !!!
If your vehicle has room, isn't it easier doing this when the pump is still bolted down for added leverage? I hate fighting moving parts other than torqueing the tool down.
Mine's more of a question than a everytime I put the pulley on and make it so that the peace with the pulley goes on two movies back and forth in and out in and out in and out which makes it squeal how do I avoid doing that???
Yeah that's a nice concept but most all of the power steering pumps I have worked on, the pulley usually doesn't go back on until you mount the pump back on the motor first.
Dodge and Chrysler Minivans (Caravan and Town and Country) are impossible to install and remove as they are right next to the subframe. Im in the middle of replacing pump and the pulley has to be attached to the pump before the whole unit is installed as one.
Must be nice to have those holes in the pulley so you can intall out of the vehicle.. protip. If you use a ratchet or ratcheting wrench on the vise end rather than just a wrench, you can reciprocate your wrench using the function of the ratchet and the spin of the pulley
You should be getting a free rental from at least AZ and I believe O-really's too.. They charge you the fee, then when you bring it back they should give you your money back. If not they are messing up. It's AZ policy for sure to provide free rentals.
Never seen the wrench in the vice technique. Pretty sure my grandpa that taught me to work on semis/anything with a motor, would yell at me saying what the fuck is the wrench in the vice for. Going to make the wrench bend a little and you can't use a damn breaker bar or anything else to get more leverage. I'd definitely be getting dumb fucked by my family if they seen me do that move. But whatever works. I just have old people over my shoulder that do things their way
I don't understand why you show the pulley installation before you show the removal? Plus, you make a big mistake in suggesting to seat the pulley, "as fast as it will go". BIG MISTAKE - DON'T DO THAT!
If someone was to use the screw in place of the button to remove the pulley and now it is stuck in the power steering pump is there any easy way to remove the screw?

Great video, no useless intro chit chat. Clear and thorough. ✌
Perfect! Clear, concise with no BS. Thank you for this video!
One of the best videos I've seen in a long time. Simplified instructions with some important tips. Thanks to you mate.
Finally, someone did it with proper instructions and showed me the missing link.
Thank you for being so thorough.

The vise trick is genius. Thank you for the video sir!
Use an impact!! Genius, never tried that. You learn something new everyday. Good video!
Mine blew up when I did
Finally found a video that's easy to follow. Great job, thank you.
Howzit my Braddah! Very informative.... step by step, you took it to the next level without any guesswork. Much Mahalo!
Thanks for the video. I usually just "wing" it with pullers but your video made it easy!

excellent help ! Wasn't exactly sure how to use this same kit I rented at Advance Auto. You took all the questions out of doing it ! Thanks much !!
Thank you very much for the quick video. It's perfect and to the point. Now I'm off to do this same job, but ready thanks to your video.
Good video. You know what works better than the vice? Install it after the pump is on the truck.
Young Man u r the best instructor, great video, god bless.
Genius Tip! Never thought of doing that. Thank You for making and sharing this valuable tip video.

Lmfao! Same here.
Who u telln. Ion play bout my tools. Mainly 8mm 10mm 13mm 14mm 15mm. U get it 😂 😂
Thank you bro you explained and showed the perfect way to do it👍👍👍
Thanks for making this video and that help me see how to use these tools!!!
Thanks, because I have been struggling putting pulley on
The vice idea helped me out a bunch, appreciate it, cheers 🍻

Thank you we save alot of money by seeing thise
Thanks for this tip. Gotta replace the pump as the barrings took a no warning fail. ZJ sounds like a diesel !
Good luck! Let us know how you make oiut

Thks for video, I have a 92 GMC van, do you have a video on taking pulley removal and put it on
Nice job Doug.
That's great but what do you do when the shaft and pulley start to spin and back out the center screw?
Thanks for the video. It looks like the bolt holes for the pump are located behind the pulley, how do you install the power steering pump if you have already put the pulley on it?
His pulley has holes in it for intallation of the pump. Most applications you have to install the pulley after the pump is intalled.
I was gonna do this but I found another pump and pully cheaper than a new pully. 🤷♂️ lol.. great video!
Yea, I try to avoid these things whenever possible, but sometimes it is all you can do
@@DEInTheGarage yep.. I have a feeling I'll be doing this sooner than later. Lol
Most of the time the new pump doesn't come with a pulley because the same pump will fit on multiple vehicles that have different size pulleys
Yay for replacing leaky shaft seals
About to try this? Thank you... Thank you......I know it's probably a silly one but one quick question? Can you use an impact to install? Thank you thank you!!!! Have a great day or nite!!!!

you can remove without the button insert? i noticed it was not used, or is it not necessary?
The best instructions. Thank you.
Awesome instructional video!

I needed that advice as well !!!
Damn good video. Straight to the point. Quick. Very informative! Thanks man!!
Thanks for the tips. Did a good job
This is a great perfect video man thanks
I just ordered a pulley. F.....n thing would not come off. It was on there for 25 years. Thanks for the awesome vid. Helped me alot!
I have been there! not fun
Make sure you put grease on the puller it will last longer
Dude. Vise tip. Excellent!
If your vehicle has room, isn't it easier doing this when the pump is still bolted down for added leverage? I hate fighting moving parts other than torqueing the tool down.
Where to buy this tools and how much? Is this can be done on a dodge grand caravan 1997,3.3L 6cyl?
It worked thank you. Didn't have to use an impact.
Glad to hear it!
Will it work if the pulley exploded and the metal sleeve is left on the pump?
Can you impact it on?
Only works if you have the access cutouts on the pulley,I have the solid wheel, I will be replacing mine with the access windows
A lot of the people who rent those pullers use adjustable wrenches that is why they are rounded.
Mine's more of a question than a everytime I put the pulley on and make it so that the peace with the pulley goes on two movies back and forth in and out in and out in and out which makes it squeal how do I avoid doing that???

Very good thanks
Does the 4.7 use a 6 rib belt?? My 5.2 should use a 7 rib but it uses 6 rib and im trying to get the right pulley
Very helpful video, thanks
How 2 adjust the pully from making that cricket sound on a econoline!?
I know this is older but maybe someone will answer this question. Can I do this with pump still in vehicle?
Is there a way to do it without the pulley pulling kit?
Must be nice to have those holes in the pulley so you can intall out of the vehicle.. protip. If you use a ratchet or ratcheting wrench on the vise end rather than just a wrench, you can reciprocate your wrench using the function of the ratchet and the spin of the pulley
what happens when you have the pump replaced only to find out a couple months later that the pully or shaft is bad and the pully falls off
SIMPLE GOOD VIDEO
Great video thank you for the info
What if the tool won’t allow the pulley to go on far enough? it needs to go past the shaft to line up but the tool stops once you hit shaft
thnx life saver video
Thanks 😊
Thanks five stars
“Bunch of Uncle Jerrys”😂😂
That wheel was about halfway to where it needed to be. Not going to align with the belt!
I bought one of those kits. Just did this like a month ago!
Thanks
I wouldn't use chrome sockets with an impact

Buy the kit from Harbor freight for 22.00
Alot easier said then done, most vehicles u can't out the pulley on first, so that fancy vise trick won't work
I had to cut a piece of heavy wall pipe because that crappy ring expanded out. That pulley was really on there lol

Nice
Expect the plastic pulley to crack and have a new one on hand.
I’m pretty sure deinstall is removing
Instead of clamping your ratcheting wrench in a vice (ouch!!!), just clamp the end of the stud in the vice? No harm, no foul.
