Impressive performance with the Silvertip. Just discovered a good tip when recasting the gel. I melt mine in the oven at 265 deg. After about 4 hours in there, the center of the gel was still not as melted as the outside areas. The small bubbles would not rise out. I took some copper wires about 12" long and layed about 6 of them diagonally in the pan to conduct the heat to the center and an hour later, the center was fully "fluid" and ALL the bubbles had risen out. I'm sure if I used the copper wires from the beginning, the entire process can be reduced greatly and the block will stay clearer from the reduced time of being heated.
Great tip! I hate melting it down and molding but it is necessary as the stuff isn't cheap. I try to cut away any powder and fragments since it clouds the gel so bad. It still clouds up after a couple of remelts but I use the cloudy stuff for my off camera testing. My thing with it is that it consumes time that I could be spending reloading or creating videos.
@@buffalosoutdoors My last recast I chopped out any dirty stuff but only cut the block into thirds and stuffed it into the mold, rather that chop it into small pieces. Melting it down in the oven isn't smelly IF you are careful to keep the stuff from dripping over the sides of the mold. People have no idea how expensive the gel is and how much work it is to recast.
"Hotter than a Stihl chainsaw in a pawn shop...." Now, that is funny! I'm a retired woodworker. I work a few hours a week at the local hardware. We are an authorized Stihl tool distributor. We always have customers asking about used or reconditioned Stihl tools.... HAH! Most of the time when folks buy a Stihl, they don't ever sell it. They truly are lifetime investments. New to your channel...lovin' it!
I like that manufacturers are taking more interest in the most utilitarian cartridge of all time. The Velocitor was built for penetration, more energy and weight for better terminal performance on larger vermin. The Stinger was made for explosive performance on small and medium size vermin. They are both excellent and is why they find their way into self defense conversations concerning the 22LR. Honestly, they are probably still the best for that purpose, but the manufacturers are definitely trying, and that’s a great thing. Thanks for the video on the great 22 LR.
Those Silvertips are kicking some ass. I haven’t seen a bad review yet. For .22lr, that’s impressive for sure! For so long cci has just dominated and in selection they still do. Nice to see Winchester keepin em all honest. I’ll be buying some
Aguila is really right there with CCI. Even in terms of selection. They make a TON of different .22LR loads. Everything from "primer only" 20 grainers with almost no noise to giant 60 grain subsonic projectiles. I think they have 5 different tiers of more traditional ammo. Standard velocity A "medium"velocity (most of their bulk packs are this stuff) A high velocity called Interceptors that rival Velcoitors. Hyper velocity called Super Maximum that rivals Stingers. Pretty much all of these come in solid & hollow point varieties.
OUTSTANDING BUFFALO! The CCI Velocitor is my preference for everything I have taken several Feral Hogs & Coyotes with it putting them down out to 50 yards on Hogs & 100 yards on Coyotes. But I enjoyed your test . The CCI Velocitor has proven itself on live animals and is a great round with clean one-shot kills.I use this round in my Job as a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator where I specialize in the eradication of Feral Hogs & Coyotes . I have dispatched Hogs, Coyotes, Racoons, Opossums, Armadillos, Fox caught in traps killing them with one well-placed shot to the head .
One of the best 22lr reviews. You covered exactly what viewers wanted. Different barrel lengths, performance and velocity. No fluff or winded talks just right to the point with results. Solid. I have a SR22 and have been trying to find a round that will give good penetration and descent wound cavity as a defensive round.
It would be interesting to see how that Silvertip bullet would behave if it struck 4 layers of denim first, simulating clothing. Would it immediately fall apart?
I really didn't think a segmented hollowpoint is a good idea if we are shedding needed mass to penetrate deep, but this one looks like a winner. The Velocitor is the best penetrating load I am aware of and this comes close + added damage. The Silvertip looks like a winner!
Yeah 16 of those rounds flying at you at 1,100fps exploding like mini grenades on impact would be vicious! My TX22 is such a fun gun but never thought about it for self defense.🤔
Velocitor is my go-to when I conceal carry my Glock .44. Some days I just don't want to carry my much heavier 43X. When targeting my grouping is much better with CCI for whatever reason, it doesn't FTF or FTE, and packs a good punch. I have had tons of issues with anything and everything Winchester makes. Velocitor can definitely get the job done with a couple well-placed rounds.
I love these tests. Someday I still want enough land to try and set up my own shooting range and do whatever I want. Right now I have too many close neighbors, but I love my house currently

Wow, that Silvertip segmented beautifully! I need to hunt some of these down. OldFatDad and 22plinkster are some of my other favorites. I sleep very well with my S&W 617 loaded with Federal Premium punch on my nightstand. My next acquisition will probably be a 22lr rifle. My wife already has a 10/22, I need to check out that Walther Tac R1, I've already been stalking S&W MP Sports in 22lr. 😎
I think this is the best demonstration of the Winchester Silver tips on the tube. This round is specifically made for pistols with a faster burning powder charge. No over penetration and great fragmentation. The exact definition of a personal defense round. Love the clear gel you used, best ever visibility. I think, like others have mentioned that the chronograph needs the rounds to be fired more in the center of the field in order to be measured. Thanks for the video. I was able to find 2 boxes on line to carry in my keltec P17.
Your test pretty much confirmed what I expected from the Winchester. I have a suspicion these are their 37 grain Varmint HE bullets. I've always bought Velocitors for my wife's SR22 because of the numerous test I've watched and read about they don't expand from a hand gun and gives more penetration. The Stingers typically penetrate less because they do expand. I picked up some Silvertips just to check them out. They work well from her 10/22. I'll keep the Velocitors in her carry gun.
OldFatDad wanted me to tell you thanks for inviting me to his channel..He does it all different and it is well worth watching.I have been playing catch-up with all his old ones..you guys keep them coming..you should try the Tipman arms 22 ..I got one about two months ago ..got around 1200 rounds through it..very well made....check it out..
Thanks! I really do enjoy his videos as he seems very laid back and has his own style of doing things. I want to try one of those Tipmans as I have heard a lot of good about them. I will look into it!

Another excellent one from da Buf' ! Thanks. I will go out and buy some of the Silvertip 37 grains tomorrow. Keep up the good work, Mr. Buf' Man ! Pennsylvania loves your videos. ☺
Good job Buffalo! I have been a Velocitor fan for years as a defense round and have little use for the punch or the stinger, but I do very much admire the Silvertip after watching your demo. It seems very odd that the ammo companies make 40 grain bullets for squirrels but reduce the weight of the bullets for bad men????
This is the stuff I love to see. Just bought both these (among others) online and was very interested to see their relative performance. No real surprise there…just a sobering thought of really not wanting to get shot with a 22LR. Sure, in a self defense scenario you might hit some evil doer with a Velocitor that does a “through and through” but given my 25 round magazine (or I could use my 50) I could write my name across the perp’s center mass. Hey…it’s an ART project! Calligraphy!
Higher velocities equal more expansion, but less penetration. The Silvertip, by far, ( imo ) offers more terminal results than a single wound channel. I bought a box of these silvertips yesterday at Wal-Mart...9.60+tax...watching your test I think either brand would do okay if loaded...right now we load velocitors, but the segmenting nature of the Winchester is something to consider, especially when the core of the bullet still went in a foot...I try to imagine the expanding pain the segments would cause and I know I don't want to be on the business end...we all know .22lr isn't the ideal, but for some folks having a couple of decent ammo options can't hurt...good work...!

I’d still take the velocitor. Heavier bullet traveling faster means more energy. Also the velocitor penetrated deeper. Gotta get to those vitals. Not concerned about expansion.
Fantastic video ! If i wasn't retired on a fixed income , i can promise you i would be one of your best patreon supporters. 🙂 you deserve it for all the great video's!
Awesome! Thank you for reading my mind and shooting them out of a long barrel! FWIW, my experience with a 4.7" barrel and Velocitors, mirrors your results with the rifle. Cheers!
I'll stay with my Velocitor .22's. We use them in an 18" Winchester Wildcat rifle and my wife likes it for self defense over a pistol/revolver. My CCI's are 99% effective as far as misfires in this rifle. We don't want super deep penetration because our neighbors in the adjoining condo probably wouldn't care for a 9mm inadvertently paying them a visit. So the .22 is just fine.😆
Very impressive results and excellent job putting this together. I watch and support lots of channels but yours usually keeps my attention all the way to the end. Happy Independence Day. 🇺🇸
More fun shooting 22s; I believe it would be a bad day for any criminal no matter what one you used. CCI made Segmented 22s back around 2016 or a little later. They use a 32 grain segmented hollow point bullet at an advertised velocity of 1640fps. The case length is longer than the Velocitor case by quite a bit. The Velocitors I have don’t state the velocity just claim 30% more energy; I got mine long ago when the first came out. I believe they use a 36 or 40 grain hollow point bullet. I tried both in a revolver and autos; they shoot accurately out of pistols. It might be okay to use the longer case ones in pistol or standard chambered rifles. But, not a good idea to use them in a target grade chamber. The segmented ones shoot fine at fifty; but start losing accuracy past 75 yards in rifles. They pretty much act like Stingers do; except the bullets fragment. The way things are now; the best cartridge for self-defense is the one you have bullets for. The problem with your chronograph is if the bullet pass over the sensors to low they fail to see the bullet. I have seen chronographs explode; it is funny to see if isn’t yours. I was worried for you. I saw a 378 Weatherby magnum do an amazing feat of destruction to one once.🐃🥇😉
I like the format, very informative. Nice job, thank you. Thinking of getting into hunting & would like to know practicle diff betwern 22lr, magnum & hornet

Great now you just made me loose more time and sleep to try to find the Winchester silver tip. 😂 Great video sir!
LOL! I'm just glad you enjoyed the video! THanks!
Very interesting!!!
Great video Buffalo! Thanks for the video! 🇦🇺
Great analysis. Thanks for posting. Those Winchesters looked pretty effective. Always love CCI too.
Fantastic video !
If i wasn't retired on a fixed income , i can promise you i would be one of your best patreon supporters. 🙂 you deserve it for all the great video's!
Thank you! I appreciate you saying that.
Awesome! Thank you for reading my mind and shooting them out of a long barrel! FWIW, my experience with a 4.7" barrel and Velocitors, mirrors your results with the rifle. Cheers!
Thanks for the great comment! I appreciate it.
Another great ballistic video Buffalo. Keep up the great job.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy them!
You deserve that 100k go Buffalo!!!
Sounds like a great video from the comments. I came back after a 54 minute ad and the video had played. Oh well.
Excellent as always!
How do the silver tip bullets perform after passing through clothing, I wonder if they might fragment before penetrating into the body of the target?
By looking at how far it entered the gel before segmenting that sould have to be some serious clothing
No it won't , you can put 4 layers of denim on gel at 100 yards and it won't fragment until after it's in the gel
Buffalo you sure read my mind about the rifle thank you another great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment too!
Good deal.
I do like how that silver tip works.
It impressed me too, Thanks for watching.
@@buffalosoutdoors 👍

Jim
Great gel test my friend... you are too good a shot.....the first two 22s were almost in the same track.....that was a fun watch....
Almost got them TOO close together! LOL Thanks BB
Pretty impressive 22 round.
Thanks Paul!
This has been my favorite 22 ammo since they came out , drops coyotes , hogs anything you can think of , Just picked up 50 boxes from academy
That Winchester silvertip is awesome
It sure looks like it lives up to the advertising! Thanks for watching!
Great review this and the .32 s&w short review with the h&r top break is why I subscribed. Keep being you brother and stay on the path you choose
Very impressive results and excellent job putting this together. I watch and support lots of channels but yours usually keeps my attention all the way to the end. Happy Independence Day. 🇺🇸
Thanks for the kind words and Happy Independence Day Rick!
@@buffalosoutdoors You're welcome brother.
I finally found some 22 mag at really good pricing in a local store. Now I'll be on the hunt for these Silvertip's. Great job as usual Buffalo. 👍🏼
I love .22 mag. Glad to hear it's been spotted in your area!
"The way things are now; the best cartridge for self-defense is the one you have bullets for." RIGHT ON!
I'm glad that your LCRx is a good one. Mine couldn't hit water if I dropped it out of a boat.
🤣😂🤣
I like the format, very informative. Nice job, thank you. Thinking of getting into hunting & would like to know practicle diff betwern 22lr, magnum & hornet
