I recall one documented case in Montana where a woman used a .22 cal pistol to save her life during a grizzly bear attack. She and her husband were walking near the tree line when a huge grizzly bear came out of the trees and charged them. The woman reactively drew her small .22 semi auto and shot her husband in the legs dropping him in front of the bear and allowing her time to run away to safety.

This was impressive to watch. I survived being shot in the head twice with a .22LR. It hurt like Hell and almost killed me. At the hospital when they did a CAT scan, they said there were shockwave patterns still visible on the brain. Seeing it in the gel was neat to watch. Although it had me thinking back to that moment I heard the gunshot and a fraction of a second later felt the impact. Don't underestimate the .22LR!
1977fbird Pretty much any other round would've done you in if you were shot twice in the head with it. It's better than a pointy stick, but given that a Maverick 88 can be had for pretty much the same price as a 10/22 there's not really a good reason to buy a .22 for home defense.
I have hunted with a Marlin 39A since 1966 and I mean I hunted hard, mostly for squirrels. I tried most brands that I can think of, but CCI mini mag hollow points convinced me years ago that they are the best. I've never had one not fire and their lethality on game as large as coons, groundhogs and bobcats is incredible within 75 yards.
A ton of good information presented here. Very nice! Thank you for the professional format you always use, it's so consistent. A true asset to the shooting community.
While I am not a huge fan of .22 LR for personal defense, in a rifle like the 10/22 or similar, one of these to the chest would be a very bad day indeed.
I know its not cheap, or easy to set everything up for these tests to make videos for us viewers, so id really like to thank you. I really appreciate it and love watching your channel. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the test. Would be interesting to do the same test using a handgun at the same distances. Also maybe at longer distances that someone would be hunting. Happy SAFE New Year!
I like this format, using the clear block to show the outside rather than cutting into it. This surely adds to the sim-test videos where you can show the meaty parts in depth. Thanks for another great video.
Was literally just looking up your old CCI .22lr Mini-Mag HP ballistics test, and saw this video uploaded today. I always thought you had the best ballistics test, and this clear gel test was awesome! Keep it up!
Where are all the "A .22 will just piss me off" tough guys on this video :p I have always been an advocate of SHOT PLACEMENT and anyone who thinks these results arent satisfactory for self defense I would like to see you volunteer your chest cavity for some of these rounds :)
The94GTC I don't use a pistol. I use a highly modified Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 with a slide fire stock and 50 round drum mags :) Feeling just fine about my chances considering I can peg a lightbulb at 100 yards.
In self-defense, you need people to be in pain and close to death on the first shot. People have been shot with .38 long colt over and over, before going down. For self-defense, you start at .380 ACP and go up, backup guns start at .25 ACP and go up from there.
One of the most overlooked factors is that a .22 will allow you to stay on target with more rounds in a quick burst. Since most agree that shot placement trumps caliber, this factor should be considered heavily. If someone kicks in your door, and you have a short amount of time to lob rounds at them, the low recoil of the .22 will allow you to get more shots on target because of less re-target time in between. You take a .44, or a .38, a 9mm, and you may get on target with your first shot, but very often the shooter misses with many of their next shots in a situation where you only have time to react and start firing. You don't have time to bring your hand and eye back in to position, look through your sites, and aim calmly. That being the case, many of your next shots may be off target because the first shot moved your aim off target. With a .22, you aim, and can then unload a magazine all more likely on target because your aim didn't move. Velocitor rounds in a 10/22 Charger with a 15 round magazine is a worthy home defense weapon, as an option of course. It's also a firearm that husband, wife, and daughter can grab and feel confident, if need be. I prefer a 12 gauge if I have the time to choose, but a .22 makes for a versatile weapon. You can also take it outside to take down a coyote attacking your dog, hunt hogs, kill varmints, etc. I think every home should have a .22, and if you want your wife to open up to protecting herself, have her fire a .22 so she's not scared off.
I've been following your videos for a while now and enjoy your humor and candid approach. We can always count on you for good reliable information, Cheers for that and love the clear ballistic medium
Super video! Thanks for making this, your effort is appreciated. I was quite impressed with the shape of the hollow points, they really expanded wonderfully. I'm a huge fan of the .22, I think it's sometimes really underrated. Too bad that the ammunition is so very hard to find sometimes. Thanks again for a very informative video.
IMO the .22 caliber in general (bb, cb, short, long, long rifle, magnum) is the most versatile caliber there is. You can use them to hunt anything in NA with enough shots, for target shooting, plinking, gallery shooting, blanks, ramming nails in concrete etc. I love .22 ammo tests! Keep up all the great work, Tom!
My favorite test yet! Very interesting. I use all of these rounds. I've had the best hunting results in my 10/22 and SR22 with the Velocitor. It's given the best if both worlds in expansion and penetration. I don't use a .22 as a CCW very often buy when I do it's the SR22 loaded with Velocitor.

Decades ago, I knew a rancher who harvested does routinely with a 40 gr. round in a .22 rifle whenever his freezer got low. Not even remotely legal, but he lived in the middle of nowhere, so he got away with it.
Stephen Britt More deer have been killed illegally with .22WMR than all other calibers combined. Yeah, it's stouter, but .22LR will do the job, too. @@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney I've seen this, too. In addition to head shots, if you use a round nose, and double lung them, let them run off. They'll typically go 50-75 yards, and lie down. Fundamentally .22 is great for practice and learning. It’s cheap and pretty consistent. When I was teaching my kids and wife to shoot I wasn’t going to put the AR 10 in their hands. Nice video. Short and to the point
thank you so much tn. i bought up 5 packs of the segmented HP's when i fist saw them and have been wanting to see if the truly do fragment into 3 pieces but havent been able to test them on any critters as of yet. they did not fail to impress, it clearly delivered a large amount of energy for a .22. as always great test, and keep up the good work.
This might be my favorite video. I like the clear media, and I like the new format. The way you dislplayed them at the end. Very nice. And great information too. Thanks.
Really love the segmented HP. I got a box of the 40gr subsonic variety when my LGS first started carrying them. Out of a Marlin bolt gun, it's a great squirrel round. Quiet but lethal.
Excellent video Tn, really like the clear gel......No body does these kind of videos like you do, you take your time and show in detail all segments of the test, and very well explained thru-out the video. Thanks for doing the .22 cal. its a really over looked caliber.....Thumbs-Up.

Awesome test with clear gel, black background and good lighting!! I like guns and photography so I can appreciate both. I bought 1600 rounds of 40 grain solids and it is good to know how they perform.
I installed an ER SHAW 18 " Tapered barrel on my Ruger 10/22 along with the BSA Sweet .22 3-9 X 40 scope and I zeroed at 50 yards with the CCI 32 grain Stinger Hollow Point bullet it's shooting sub moa groups well under 1 inch at 50 yards .the 36 grain copper plated Remington HP shoot well also .thank you for the you tube reviews I have learned from them.
I know this is old I don't know how I miss it...thanks for these great test and with a rifle...I've killed a lot of game with 22 lr cci mini mag and was interested to see how it looked it gel...thanks man
Gel tests are fun and give some insight into depth penetration and the bullet's ability to hold up...but I always find it interesting how differently many types of rounds react to gel compared to say a chunk of pork or a pig carcass, clay, or even water. It's always good to remember that, ultimately, it's a guide to the round's structural integrity rather than a truly accurate representation of what it will do.
Seeing the mini-mag sail though the block made me realize I miss hearing the 'glug-glug-glug' of gallon jugs draining from your early ammo tests. To the archives with me!
just bought my daughter a lil ruger sr22, which she loves, and this really made dad feel better about alot of things. Now I know which bullet to send her out into the world with. Thanks guys!
Don't get too excited.... A short, handgun barrel is not gonna be quite this devastating. Gonna lose about 300-400 fps. May not get hollow point expansion. But, they will still do the job... Tell her to empty her gun, into the bad guy. And run!
you clearly make very thought videos. this .22lr. test is one of them! now if i could only get some CCI's to shoot it would be nice. thanks for the comparison of these rounds.
No problem. As long as the ammo matches what is stamped on the rifle it will work safely. Just make sure that sub-sonic ammo clears the barrel if you ever fire it. Aguila "Colibri" (a sub-sonic round) is very under powered and may not make it out of the barrel of a rifle. Aguila "Super Colibri" should work well. By the way, CCI ammo is known to be a very good ammo and is sought after by many .22 shooters. Good luck and happy shooting.
I would never have guessed thered be so much variation not just among 22 ammo, but among only one brand! Your videos are absolutely fantastic TN, cleanly & clearly presented with just the right amount of information to educate and entertain... But I must confess im even more unsure what to get now! A guy on Armslist is selling CCI minimags RN & HP in bulk for cheap (
sergeantbigmac I've shot both. The Mini-Mags, and the Velocitors. The Mini-Mags are more accurate, and the Velocitors are really only averaging a little over 1300fps out of a 16" barrel. The velocity on the box is wayyy over advertised. Plus, there is a huge fluctuation of velocity, from one round to the next. Probably why the Mini-Mags are more accurate. The Velocitors are STILL more powerful tho........ So, both rounds are great!!!
Amazing video. It is very interesting to see what some quality .22 will do. My impression is that .22 LR would get you bye in a self defense situation just fine, if that's all you had on hand. Great little survival round as well. Thanks for the vid :)

I shot a rabbit in the chest with a subsonic segmented and the rabbit pretty much exploded
segmented for pest control
hollow point for hunting
solid for target
im about to go hunt some east texas squirrels and predators with my marlin 60 and minimag hollowpoints, cant wait!
In order for the meat to survive kill the rabbit without blowing it apart you need something no bigger than a 22 short with a maximum of a 22 long long rifle will just take half of it off a long rifle will kill a bobcat
@tnoutdoors9 thanks for all of your great vids! Ive never shot @ b-gels but I can now cay with confidence that the days I choose to carry my Walther P22 as my CCW it will get the job done. Again thanks so much for all of your hard work glad to be apart of your channel :)
lmao and people think the 22 is a shitty round haha what jokes the 22 will do its job and drop whoever is in its path
yeah, if you empty a whole magazine on them xD
don't need to get back up, because it has no knock down power XD it will hurt but wont stop anybody from shooting/stabbin yo ass in time.
hahaha ya ok thats why more people in the usa have died from 22 rounds then any other round hahaha keep thinking what you want guy and let me know how it goes getting shot with a 22 :)
Bigtwan61 and even more people died from car accidents, your facts do not add up to the fact that 22lr is a shit self defense round.
if 22lr was so effective then why do you think no military in the world uses them in combat
(-_-) yeah, it sux XD
Fundamentally .22 is great for practice and learning. It’s cheap and pretty consistent. When I was teaching my kids and wife to shoot I wasn’t going to put the AR 10 in their hands.
Nice video. Short and to the point
One of the best videos you have produced. Love the clear block.
thank you so much tn. i bought up 5 packs of the segmented HP's when i fist saw them and have been wanting to see if the truly do fragment into 3 pieces but havent been able to test them on any critters as of yet. they did not fail to impress, it clearly delivered a large amount of energy for a .22. as always great test, and keep up the good work.
Every ammo review you do has an engineer's touch. I like that. I hope in the future, that all ammo reviews you do, are clear ballistic gel.
After watching several of your videos. I must say u do very nice reviews! I look for a bullet review and there u are one again. Thanks!! 😁👍👍🇺🇸
The clear block worked great on this .22 test. Also, it was good to see comparisons in the same video/test. Thanks
i watched most of your ammo testings, but with clear gel wow its really something
This might be my favorite video. I like the clear media, and I like the new format. The way you dislplayed them at the end. Very nice. And great information too. Thanks.
As always, awesome vid. Love your .22 test, as Im a big fan of the round. And this clear gel is just another level of cool
Great vid, my friend. I would have never thought 22 would go that deep.
Really love the segmented HP. I got a box of the 40gr subsonic variety when my LGS first started carrying them. Out of a Marlin bolt gun, it's a great squirrel round. Quiet but lethal.
Great test. I was very surprised to see the wound channel on the solid 40 grain. i wasn't expecting that at all.
Absolutely amazing, the clear gel is very telling! I love and enjoy your channel, commentary and videos. Keep it up!
Excellent video Tn, really like the clear gel......No body does these kind of videos like you do, you take your time and show in detail all segments of the test, and very well explained thru-out the video. Thanks for doing the .22 cal. its a really over looked caliber.....Thumbs-Up.
I'm 44 seconds in and I am so excited to see this test. The mini mag hp has been my hunting round of choice for my 22's and now I'm going to see what it actually does.....YES!
Sound like you are getting over a cold. Thanks for the comparison. Another great video and a nice way to use the clear block. Probably saves dissection time.
I must agree, this was the best bal. test I have seen on youtube. Very professional! Too bad you did not use Stingers. Thanks dude.
I love the clear block! It just plain old looks cool even without shots into it.
Awesome test with clear gel, black background and good lighting!! I like guns and photography so I can appreciate both. I bought 1600 rounds of 40 grain solids and it is good to know how they perform.
Your tests just get better and better.
That clear gel block looks great. Guns and ammo art.
Feb, 2018 - That was an informative video and your an excellent narrator.
I know this is old I don't know how I miss it...thanks for these great test and with a rifle...I've killed a lot of game with 22 lr cci mini mag and was interested to see how it looked it gel...thanks man
Strangely I've never recovered a expanded 22 lr bullet as many things as I've taken with it non have espanded
Would like to see this with various Winchester offerings next. Thanks, great vid!
Squeaky Reed at least should have got her a 38 special or a 9
Don't get too excited.... A short, handgun barrel is not gonna be quite this devastating. Gonna lose about 300-400 fps. May not get hollow point expansion. But, they will still do the job... Tell her to empty her gun, into the bad guy. And run!
that segmented HP was absolute magic!
you clearly make very thought videos. this .22lr. test is one of them! now if i could only get some CCI's to shoot it would be nice. thanks for the comparison of these rounds.
I love the use of the clear gel! lets you see the track a lot better! Keep up the good work!
I want to thank you for your videos, and your time. I enjoy each and every one no matter the topic.
Wow, I was hoping for a quick look but I got an awesome review on those rounds ! Thank you sir
Am I the only one who automatically hits the "Like" button before the video even starts because you just know it's gonna' be good?
Very interesting. The permanent cavity produced by the solid really surprises me.
Very interesting video with the clear gel. Keep up the great videos with the clear gel you get much more out of it . Thanks.
I love your honest serious reply to that guy, your good people man. thanks for the work you do for this thing we love.
This clear gel is FANTASTIC!!
nice vid glade to see more bullet testing dont see many good 22 gel tests on youtube
Amazing video. It is very interesting to see what some quality .22 will do. My impression is that .22 LR would get you bye in a self defense situation just fine, if that's all you had on hand. Great little survival round as well. Thanks for the vid :)
Excellent video Sir. I run CCI ammo through my Keltec P17 exclusively. Great ammo.
Another top quality video from tnoutdoors9. The clear gel block is a great addition. I hope you use it in your future tests.
Great video and you tested 4 of my most liked cci and I really liked the results
Very well done! Thank you for taking the time to perform these test and sharing it with us.
Great editing and post production. Control over the gel and bullets may not cooperate, but your efforts and review value comes across in your audio and knowledge. Quality, quality
Good test. I really must try some of those segmented hollow point loads.
Excellent discovery of the 22lr round. The stinger should be interesting...
