  • Testing a 12 gauge 1 oz Foster rifled slug (hollow base) in a ballistic gel format at a distance of 20 feet. Using SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media that has been recalibrated to match the properties of 10% ordinance gelatin. Brief review pre-shot followed by evaluation of the tested media. Test gun is the Mossberg 590A1 Special Purpose shotgun, 20" barrel.
With a muzzle velocity of 1600 fps, this 1 ounce (437.5 grains) piece of lead is packing 2484 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. We could see a 50 lb block of gel go airborne!

You should change the colour of the gel. There were many parts throughout this video that I couldn’t tell if I was watching ballistic tests or a doctor inspecting some unfortunate souls anus.

It truly was an unfortunate soul's anus, but let's keep this revelation between only you and I.
There are sporadic Clear Ballistics gel videos from 2012-2016, then exclusively clear gel in 2019 and hopefully from this point forward.

This shows the beauty of this round. It doesn't over penetrate but rather dumps all of it's energy into the target while breaking apart and creating a huge wound channel. Nothing, neither man nor beast, could survive a hit from this.

I know this is an old video, but this is a great video that shows exactly why the 12ga is the ultimate in home defense weapons, if you load 5 to 9 slugs there's no gang of home invaders that wouldn't flee after the first one or two are dropped like a sack of potatoes, the 12ga slug is a serious man stopper, if you hit anywhere nearby center mass there's no way an invader could continue to threaten you or your loved ones. Only a 50cal. compares to the massive destruction of the 12ga slug.

I had a Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge with a rifled barrel. Shot a deer once as the sun was setting with a Coppersolid 3 inch magnum slug. I literally saw daylight through him. Before that, I though seein daylight through a man was just a western movie expression. After that, I had a newfound respect for the 12 gauge slug. It dropped that buck like it was pole axed, and the buck weighed in at 185 pounds, field dressed. That's what I like. A nice clean harvest.

I keep a full sized 18+1 round 9mm in my car. A Shotgun is ok for home defence but anything happening out in public is going to be more unpredictable. Could be close or far range, you could be sitting in your car or out of your car. I could be one or a group of assailants. You want to have something fast, small, low recoil, and that can be used at a wide range of distances. I chose 9mm because of the ammo capacity, the higher velocity, the more manageable recoil, and of course the cheap cost per round makes it easy to visit the range more frequently and become a great shot with you handgun. So I'd stick with a full sized 9 police and military around the world carry it for a reason.

I was not surprised with this slug remaining inside the gel block. I was at an autopsy of a guy that was shot from five feet with a 18" barrel length .12 gauge Winchester 2 3/4" lead Foster type slug. The deceased was in the middle of delivering a right handed punch when he was hit. The shot was 5" below left nipple and fired at about a 25 to 30 degree angle. The slug shredded the right side of the heart and came to rest in a almost "U" shape resting on the spinal column. The dead guy weighted about 250 LBS. and was tall and muscular. If that slug would have missed the spine I think it may have exited the body but with very little energy left. On the other hand it seems to me that if soft tissue is not struck the slug will penetrate multiple walls with no problem.

Really this is an awesome round for just about any scenario whether it be hunting, home defense, or self defense. I wouldn't think twice about loading these foster slugs in a 12 gauge. With a smoothbore and 1 oz slug he was putting shot after shot in a 2 foot circle. Most of them were even tighter than that. No scope, just the iron sites that come stock. Good shot placement didn't ruin any meat but absolutely dropped my deer. If you are hunting public land and a deer running off could end up on posted private land in almost any direction, it is really nice to know that a very accessible load like this will make for a fast and simple recovery. This was especially convenient since the area is heavily populated with coyotes and waiting to get permission to access private land could reduce the chances of harvesting any meat.

Best example of Force equals mass times acceleration I have seen in years. Dramatic energy dump into the block and dead center on the hit. I have used PBX slug plus pellets as a defensive load in a 12 gauge but had to admit a single slug energy dump was greater than I imagined.

Fantastic impact on that gel. I recently had a Deputy ask me to use my Coach gun and two military slugs to put down humanely a deer with a broken back and pelvis in a lot of pain. I put one in the skull and one in the heart/lung to end it as fast as possible at that point and its last breath was in seconds. A 40 shot twice in the head bounced around the bone at 9 feet and was not putting it out fast enough. I now carry a box of slugs just in case. He was almost out of slugs in his cruiser.

I have been a shotgun enthusiast since 15. When I went to Beirut, I took along an 870 Remmie and an entire backpack of 00 and slugs. I can attest to what happens when a slug meets the human body, wholly because I grabbed the wrong ammo pouch.
People who say these are not good for home defense aren't totally accurate. They're GREAT for stopping a bad guy. Problem is, with the energy (usually above 2200 ftlbs under 10 yards or more) the round carries, it's not stopping unless, like this one, it fragments (haven't seen that happen). Which means after it removes Mr. Bad Guy from the Problem Column and deposits him in the Clean Up Column, it's also going to ruin some walls, furniture, etc.
I've never wanted nor own an AR. A shotgun, of whichever manufacture you prefer, at ranges at which most engagements will happen, is far superior. What it hits is going down. At 100 yards, it's still carrying over 750 ftlbs of energy and weighs an ounce.
For fun, my buddy had a nearly dead Chevy Cavalier with a 2.4 LD-9 engine. We started it up, I positioned myself about 25 yards away with a rifled slug and let rip. Two rounds later; dead engine.
I now use a slightly modified ATI Bulldog and I can reach out and smack targets at 150 yards using a Red-Dot only (we Marines use iron sights at 500 yards) and can shoot 5-rd 5" groupings offhand, from a smooth-bore.
If I'm not slugging it out, I use 000 buck and that's effective at over 50 yards, but I use it under 40 and with a full choke it holds single shot patterns under 5" at 35 yards.
Like the BRCC guys say "Life is cyclic...and get a shotgun." :D
    Stay safe. Great demo'!!

That's the beautiful thing about it. If you have a pump you can easily cycle the blank out if he's a threat. You're right, either way a fight could break out. But with a blank it's far less likely to. You could also do what one of my friends does and run rubber buckshot first and then lethal rounds afterwards. If he's hit by the rubber buckshot he will think he's been shot and will almost always run.

These conventional Foster style rifled slugs have a reputation of being very soft and fragmenting in various ways when used on deer sized animals. They do however work well. They don't penetrate barriers or larger denser game animals as well as the harder alloy Brenneke slugs do. Just select the slug according to what you need to achieve.

The late Jimmy Cirillo, NYPD retired Stake Out Unit member stated that when a perp was struck in the chest with a 1 oz. Foster Rifled Slug the shock was so great that, “They forgot why they were there and all perps who were hit were instantly neutralized and killed except for one who was hit in the chest, escaped and was later was arrested at the hospital.” One of my first assignments at the Firearms Training Division at FLETC was to shoot different handgun rounds and a 12 ga. Rifled Slug into a water recovery tank. Each projectile was recovered after each test shot. The Foster 12 ga. Slug was very interesting. The nose was not deformed, but the skirt had simply caught up with the nose. The recovered projectile looked like a silver dollar.

I used to live in a shotgun only area. I have a 12 gauge single shot H&R made in the 30's that I silver soldered a scope rail on the barrel(Older barrels are thick enough to do this). With Federal slugs I get one ragged hole at 50 yards with 3 shots. I did shoot a deer at about 75 yards once, and it hit where I aimed, but am sure the group opens up some at that distance. I have killed quite a few deer with it. Even hits in soft areas(Lungs) really do a job.

Shortly after entering on duty at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center I was asked if I would undertake a ballistics test with a variety of different ammunition. The center had constructed a 10 - 12” diameter stainless steel tube a out of stainless steel that was about 12 feet long mounted vertically with a cat walk around the out side at about the 8 foot level for the shooter. A number of different handgun rounds were tested, but the most interesting by far was the 12 gauge rifled slug. When the rifled slug was recovered I was stunned. The little star on the nose was undamaged, but the skirt from the hollow base had continued forward upon impact with the water, causing the recovered shape to be like a silver dollar with the diameter greater than one inch!

  • @FireMario87
    @FireMario87 11 лет назад

No, you have that backwards. It is the hollow rear and weight forward
design of the foster slug that stabilizes it in flight, just like a shuttlecock. The rifling is there to allow the slug to go through tight
chokes and decrease friction in the gun barrel.

The rifling on the slug uses air resistance to make it spin once it leaves the barrel. It's the hollow base that allows the slug to give, and squeeze through chokes
